he removed the Rs?
maybe derhotacization
I can’t exactly remember but he added a couple of letters to the Rs. Many people translate it as just that, as if Denisov had rhotacism. I think he was actually trying to depict a French glottal R.
was just about to say that
French accent
That’s what I think. At the time in Russia it was in vogue to know French. One guy even goes by Pierre instead of Pyotr. It’s a pretentious high-brow thing, not a speech impediment.
Maybe somebody on lit.se will know if Tolstoy ever talked about his intent there.
worth asking; re Pierre: makes sense from what I read, a nice window back in time
You haven’t, by chance, read Finnegans Wake have you?

nope
I finally conquered that one in 2019. That was a nut-buster of a read.
Wikipedia says as much :D
I started and stopped it in disgust three times before I could make it through. I read it along with a friend and we helped each other through. He was thoroughly exhilarated by it.
re-read Catch-22 recently-ish; a favorite of mine
Read that one back in college. It was a fun read.

I'm curious now about the "metar" at the time, since the wind blew my theory away
If you count my conversation with Shelvenay I’ve been to planes, trains and ships.
