He explored the theory of how celestial bodies interact using the force of gravity? Does that count?
@voretaq7 I remembered what you said about a helicopter flying into its own downwash. I actually purposely flew my helicopter into its own downwash. It was really cool to watch although all the helicopter did was shake a little bit.

Re: the question about the Daily Mail Article I want so badly to link to the Amanda Palmer video in the comments but it's totally NSFW
. . . also only Amanda Palmer has "Official Bootlegs" of her concerts :P
@Ethan I see nothing wrong with that toy.

One of my favorite bands wrote a great song with one terrible line: "Like a beacon of blue, [can't remember these words] lights the runway ahead" Great illustration really.
Only problem is; THE RUNWAY LIGHTS ARE WHITE. That is a taxiway dude!! You're going to land on someone's head!
They should have done a little more research
@NoviceInDisguise Either they are accounting for Doppler shift, or it's just a little artistic license to make the lyrics work.
Unless it's They Might Be Giants, I think I know which.
It's not
@fooot Lol, probably more artistic license than science

@fooot with that blue shift, I don't think you'll ever see the runway lights. You'll leave a big crater where the runway used to be though. Or where the earth used to be, my apocalypse physics are a bit rusty. Something for what-if.xkcd.com perhaps. :)
not sure if it still the case, but viagra was banned for pilot use because it causes blue-shift in vision
19:22
the Daily Mail question made me want a "it's the Daily Mail, what do you expect" meme
they did one a couple of years ago about an airprox between two airlines that were "less than fifty feet apart"
neglecting to mention that it was 50 ft laterally, and they were also 2000 ft apart vertically
19:43
oh it'll be fine!
(Besides the stupid white runway lights blend in with the street lights, I can usually only find airports because of the blue taxiway lights!)
True, that is a big issue in more built up areas
My nearest airport is in the middle of nowhere.
@voretaq7 Isn't that what the beacon is for?
Bingo
Shouldn't be many of those in town
@NoviceInDisguise in bigger towns beacons are everywhere
well, big cities anyway
every time I'm at the in-laws driving through houston it seems as if half the buildings have a green/yellow/white beacon on the roof
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA oh wait you were serious?
The "beacon" at republic is on one of the lowest structures on the field, and the "green" lens is so badly faded the beacon is "White.... slightly-different-shade-of-white, I guess maybe green? Oh yeah I see REILs and blue taxiway lights, I guess that's an airport..."
19:54
hah, yea my identification of green in a lot of beacons is "which one is whiter? ok, it must be the other white"
They replaced the beacon at KHWV and when you see what green is supposed to look like it makes the other beacons around here really depressing.
@voretaq7 Yikes
Ours is on the tallest structure in the near vicinity, a vertical 50 foot + steel tower
It's just a regional airport
@NoviceInDisguise Ours is on the "old tower" - I can't find a real picture of it but here's one from X-Plane scenery
That little brick structure behind the big hangar? The beacon is on top of it.
That is hardly taller than the hangar
yikes
Is it controlled airspace?
it's actually shorter than the hangar (or maybe equal height)
Class D
The word is that one day they might move it to be on top of the (active, FAA) tower on the other side of the airport, but apparently there's some bureaucratic crap that has to happen between the FAA and NYS DOT in order to do that
20:04
Great
Ah here we go:
it might be a hair taller than the hangar :)
Barely though o.O
Our airport is a lot smaller, Charlie airspace and 5,000 foot runway. There is a 4,000 foot one at an angle as well
20:46
@NoviceInDisguise KISP has a much lower traffic volume, and is Class C (because Southwest.)
