FWIW, I think some of the comments directed at Hemang's questions are a bit harsh. As far as I can guess, he's Indian and they speak Indian English, not US or UK English. That explains some of the unusual phrasing: "in the sky" probably simply means "airborne", i.e. he wants to know about something while the plane is actually in flight. But it's still a question for travel.SE, though.

I have a question (which may be too dumb to ask for real...)... what did Maverick do in Top Gun to essentially slow down so much as to be passed by the 'enemy'? or was that entirely a movie fiction?
reduce thrust, deploy spoilers, pull up.
then stow spoilers, throttle up and pitch to follow the guy that just passed you
@CGCampbell To expand on what casey said: setting engine to idle by itself will decelerate pretty quickly at higher speeds. Pulling up helps slow down too. And the F-14 does have speed brakes (not sure if they are used in that scene).

He did say using the speed brakes in the dialog (I'm gonna hit the brakes, he'll fly right by!), I don't think they shoot the footage of F-14 deploying its speed brakes though.
@kevin By "hit the brakes" he could just mean cutting throttle and pulling up.

I always interpret it as the spoilers. There is no reason (at least not I can think of) not to use spoilers to enhance the effect.

Just checked. There are two instances of this move, one at 00:31:28, another at 01:38:48, in both cases, the F-14 pulled up to approximately 60 degrees pitch. I can't see the spoilers deploy, though in the second case it's hard to tell due to the shadows.
The upside-down move isn't real, it's composited. They mentioned this in the documentary.
(To prove that, invert the image. The letters below the canopy are flipped.)

oh yea worth mentioning, that F-14 move actually DID happen in actual combat!
It was somewhere like Israel or Iran, F-14 v.s. a fighter formation of 6. That guy in the F-14 rolled over, he was close enough to see the map on the lap of his enemy. The fighter formation scattered into bowling pins.
Saw it on some F-14 documentary on YouTube, forgot which one, but probably still there.

I saw a video of 172 doing an Split S. Although they say it is a barrel roll.
