Quite an influx of new questions this Friday...

@SentryRaven That's true. You really had a busy morning ;)
anyone know why the 2 close votes on aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/11764/… ?
@CGCampbell I didn't vote but it doesn't appear to be clear what OP is asking.
15:31
@CGCampbell It looks to me like that question is "how can I get internet access on a plane without paying for it?", which seems more like a travel.SE question
@CGCampbell its not about aviation. its about getting two-way comms while happening to be on an airplane
the only answer we could provide is "this is illegal in many jurisdictions (including the USA)"
due to the transmitting part of the question, not the bypassing commercial products part
and perhaps pointing out that you are essentially in a faraday cage and you need your antenna to be on the outside of the airplane to get a good signal
@casey There is one 'genuine' scenario: United 93. Could the pax there have contacted the ground directly in some way? Of course, in that scenario I don't think anyone would hesitate to pull out their credit card...
@Pondlife I thought they did that.
@fooot Maybe they did, I actually have no idea (despite having seen the movie). I was just thinking it's one extreme case where asking how pax can contact the ground directly is legitimate in an aviation sense, not just a travel one.
@Farhan Indeed, I managed to sneak a few answers in. :)
15:39
Of course, the simplest answer is to make sure you're a platinum/diamond/unobtanium flyer with that airline and they'll let you use the internet for free :-)
@Pondlife Well in extreme cases, they could try a cell phone. Illegal or not. I'm not sure there's much of a case for a phone "in case the plane gets hijacked by terrorists or the pilot". What are people on the ground going to do about it even if someone does call?
@Pondlife close to the ground cell phones will work
but transport category airplanes do not spend much time in that regime
@fooot exactly, unless you are going to call ATC, the FBI or someone who can actually do something useful with the information, what good is the phone really.
just buy the internet and tweet it at that point
15:57
@fooot Sure, I'm not saying that it's necessarily helpful or even practical, just that in the case of this specific question there's a theoretical reason for asking it that goes beyond "I don't want to pay for internet access". I still think it belongs on travel.SE, though
> OMG I got hijacked #FML
16:32
Thanks @voretaq7 !
@ratchetfreak Don't forget to include a selfie with the hijacker.
Because this is the 21st century :-)

Jeb and Jack get together at the Sebring 2015 Fly-In with UCAP pals, Tim, Turbo, and Don. Reviewing the first two days of the fly-in. Talking about some products we liked. And James pays us a better-late-than-never visit to talk about his afternoon demo ride. All this and more on the Uncontrolled Airspace General Aviation Podcast. Recorded January 15, 2015. Alt titles: "Socked In and Sucky"

Com'on people, just because I answered my own question, doesn't mean no one else should answer it.
This happened in the past too.
But your answer is good :)
Yeah, what more do you want?
Don't forget the drink and newspaper. Even a corpse can travel in style on British Airways - after all, they paid for that seat! :) — voretaq7 ♦ 28 secs ago
^ ? :)
I want 6 greens and 0 oranges.
You do realize those numbers were entirely made up arbitrarily years ago, right?
19:39
@BretCopeland No
Really???
So there is no use to underestimate... ?
. . .I was gonna upload an image of 6 green bananas, but there are none. CURSE YOU GOOGLE!
They were made up when it was assumed that there wouldn't be nearly as many sites as there are now, and that all of them would be like Server Fault and Super User. So they made up some basic criteria that said this is where we think you should be after 90 days, and that's how we'll define "success"
(all the bunches in the first page of image results were 5 or 8 bananas)
But the community team doesn't really go by that, and no one cares about updating Area 51
@Farhan Yeah the numbers are largely meaningless
I mean if they were ALL orange I'd say we had a problem, but Questions/Day and Answers/Question being low doesn't bother me too much
19:42
(I'd like to see 10 Questions/day, but aviation is a relatively niche field)
@fooot Quit making me look like a slacker! :P
The greens we have are very green.
@voretaq7 It took some work, I had to tell Google I wanted six, and then sort through all the pictures of entire bunches.
74 hours is a mushy brown puddle and some fruit flies :)
19:44
I can confirm that.
But the metaphor for our site stats is getting less appealing.
@voretaq7 What is this magic called which happens between 72nd and 73rd hours?
we have surprisingly few questions that I would describe as mushy brown puddles and fruit flies :)
@Farhan It has something to do with having an apple within 10 miles of the bananas. Idunno - that's biology, I just store the things in a vacuum chamber.
(actually I just don't buy bananas, I never eat them all before they go brown and nasty. I eat them when I go to my parents' house, and the dog follows me around begging demanding for pieces)
not to scale ... ^
Interesting desk.
20:39
@Farhan hah, that cup is awesome :)
20:52
@falstro Yup. While drinking coffee/tea from it, make sure you won't let your imagination wander. ;)
