last time I wrote anything that ate METARs you had to FTP them from the national weather service

I think there might be a HTTP interface to that now

@BretCopeland no particular reason - like I said the last time I dealt with any of this data in raw formats you had to FTP it off a server where it was stored as Airport/YYYY/MM/DD/HHMM.txt :P

you can also implement your own javascript-based plugin commands with arbitrary functionality and full access to the underlying bot API by adding new files in the ~/dev/SO-ChatBot/source/plugins directory, and running ~/dev/reloadpjs.sh

you only have to re-run the patch command if you run git pull

so don't worry about that for local modifications

ahhhhh, there's the commands!

the modifications in the patch are to source/IO.js and source/bot.js, so as long as you aren't making major changes to those two files, the shim hacks should continue to work uninterrupted, and their changes will get rolled into each and every reload via the amalgam build.js

think some of them might need deleting for Aviation

yeah, I recommend forking my repository or Zirak's repository on github to keep track of your changes

it's not required but I suggest it

if you don't like my changes, you can either revert individual patches, or just stop using my repository entirely and clone Zirak's -- the patch I cooked up for PhantomJS 1.9 should work on his repo as well as it does on mine

but I use SVN for all my dev work

git is a DVCS so it has one added logical step on top of SVN

you can have commits that are local to a repository

which are not in the centralized repository

so SVN's workflow goes: hack hack hack -> commit, and "commit" automatically sends your commit to the SVN repo

git's workflow goes: hack hack hack -> commit to the local repo -> push to the remote repo -- a push is little more than "sending" commits already prepared locally over the wire
