12:00 AM
At least the Cherokee is old - I've got the barn-door vents rather than the stupid ankle vents

haha

12:39 AM
I just watched a video about the Icon A5 and now I feel the need to research install costs for AoA indicators.

!!help

the install & calibration is most of the cost (time) :)
I wish I could replace the Cherokee LD/stall warning with one.

it looks like calibration is inflight
ok, two of three steps
my gut says probably 10 hours shop time or something

sounds about right, plus the flight check which you can do

yeah, i don't count my time when it comes to costs ;)
even if it's for owner assists
which are fun, if you haven't done an owner assist annual before

12:54 AM
I'm generally competent to take the aircraft to bits
after that I take 10 giant steps back and put my hands in my pockets :-P

I wonder if I get my friend who flies CL60 to do the cloudahoy

2 hours later…
2:49 AM
@DannyBeckett: are you using the wrong account, or just testing? stackoverflow.com/review/suggested-edits/3723559

need 20 rep
setting up the bot for this room

just putting through some suggested edits to get the rep needed
good spot ;)
I saw you rejected one of them :p
ahahahahaha
I just approved it
sockpuppets ftw

2:53 AM
Yep
5 more edits to go

don't worry, I'm watching

keep going to edit things and people beating me to it

Api key separate for every user? how to get token number for flickr by code ? i have refer photostream and Flicker free code . but ...

should be easy pickings

3:00 AM
20 seconds ago :P
that sucks
just edit the old questions, they're easier

stupid me. :(

19... why do they even let people get 1000 rep doing this

last one
yeah exactly
ok... now to get it working
odd, it's logged me in to chat
but doesn't let me post a message... still complains of lack of rep
also, it has the default avatar
:S

sorry, didn't think anyone else was around @BretCopeland
been trying to setup this bot for the last hour or so
just got it working... was testing it
to be fair, I was trying to convert the cost of learning to fly from GBP to USD
then I noticed there was no bot

@BretCopeland @DannyBeckett Perhaps we can teach the bot to be useful and retrieve weather data

sure we could
do you have a JSON feed?
i.e. a URL to pump a GET request to?

bwahahahaha aviation weather in a modern format? You MUST be new here! :-P

ah
what is there?

3:28 AM
last time I wrote anything that ate METARs you had to FTP them from the national weather service
I think there might be a HTTP interface to that now

is this the kind of data you want to see?
PABL 040316Z AUTO 11014G21KT 9SM OVC016 M06/M08 A3003 RMK AO1

@DannyBeckett I think that would be adequate. When someone sees "FZFG FU VA" they can ask the "How do I read this crappy ass weather format" question :)

I think I should be able to make it fairly easily
there's also this available:
Conditions at: PABL (BUCKLAND , AK, US) observed 0316 UTC 04 January 2014
Temperature: -6.0°C (21°F)
Dewpoint: -8.0°C (18°F) [RH = 86%]
Pressure (altimeter): 30.03 inches Hg (1017.0 mb)
Winds: from the ESE (110 degrees) at 16 MPH (14 knots; 7.3 m/s)
gusting to 24 MPH (21 knots; 10.9 m/s)
Visibility: 9 miles (14 km)
Ceiling: 1600 feet AGL
Clouds: overcast cloud deck at 1600 feet AGL
Weather: automated observation with no human augmentation;
there may or may not be significant weather present at this time

@DannyBeckett I was going to say you can probably use the aviationweather.gov HTML form
that should give you TAFs too if you check the right magic boxes

yeah it does
I'm on to it ;)
will @ping you soon... need a smoke first

3:32 AM
@DannyBeckett Writing Javascript makes you want nicotine? I usually want alcohol...

yup! haha
to be fair, not just nicotine
;)

@voretaq7 why the HTML form? They have an API aviationweather.gov/adds/dataserver
cc @DannyBeckett
The csv format is probably easiest to decode.

@BretCopeland I just Googled METARS and that's what came up
the API's obviously better - thanks!
(not a pilot, hadn't heard of METARS/TAF before)

ah, no problem.

XML's probably even better
it can be loaded directly into JS
gonna take a stab at it now

3:43 AM
@BretCopeland no particular reason - like I said the last time I dealt with any of this data in raw formats you had to FTP it off a server where it was stored as Airport/YYYY/MM/DD/HHMM.txt :P
in fact I bet good (tax) money that still exists in some back corner of a government datacenter
probably running on a genuine VAX.

the bot is js?

@voretaq7 seems very likely.

interesting

@DannyBeckett I guess I've just gotten spoiled with JSON REST APIs. I've developed this hatred of xml... even when I have an adequate parser available.

3:48 AM
@BretCopeland A healthy hatred of XML is a good thing.

^ true

i have been lucky and my only exposure to xml is debugging the occasional text pattern or wordpress RSS issue

good for JS though

And I say that as a former member of the church of the holy WSDL.

json is fun to work with, until you have to use an api that abuses it :)

3:49 AM
@voretaq7 oh god, WSDL.

Jobvite's status feed contains everything
like, how much a position is budgeted for, etc
we had to proxy it so we could just extract the basics :(

@egid "Bandwidth is cheap."

basically yeah
their server is insanely slow, too
a request for 200 results takes 5 seconds just to respond

@egid "Just keep repeating the request until the server answers!"

Ever interacted with Salesforce? Slow API takes on a different meaning.

3:52 AM
(a rather famous software company uses that algorithm to update anti-virus definitions.)

actually we have a team that was created just to build an internal salesforce replacement

!!listcommands

@egid I think every company has that team.

!!weather test

3:53 AM
hello world

well, they have since ripped it out completely

@egid How many priests did THAT exorcism requier?

and we now have a fully custom CRM that is tied into the customer facing bits
the team has a dev lead, two PMs, a front end dev, and until recently i think 7 engineers

@egid what type of company is this?

3:54 AM
!!weather test

@DannyBeckett Could not process input. Error: Cannot read property 'error' of null

the product that replaced salesforce is kind of a driving force behind our service not sucking
so it justified a huge team

!!weather test

@DannyBeckett That didn't make much sense. Maybe you meant: weather

So 7 priests, a necromancer, two witches, and.... what's a dev lead equate to? :)

3:55 AM
haha

traffic cop? :D

@egid desk sergeant?

hah
anyway yeah we're a meatspace company that happens to have a pretty large engineering / r&d wing
6 years ago we were the opposite
kinda cool

!!weather test

4:00 AM
so, what else should the bot do that's aviation related?
aircraft reg lookups? :)
skyvector integration?

!!weather PHTO

!!weather KPAE
:[

It says "command calling" on my end
think it's because its asynchronous

skyvector integration would be cool something like !!Skyvector KALB KABQ to have it lay out the flight plan...

nearly done I think ;)

4:04 AM
yeah that's sorta what i was thinking
shouldn't be too hard, skyvector lets you chain identifiers in a url string i think
the syntax is a bit odd though

!!weather PHTO
> XMLHttpRequest cannot load aviationweather.gov/adds/dataserver_current/…. No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource. Origin 'http://chat.stackexchange.com' is therefore not allowed access.
nice, I fucking love/hate CORS

@egid The K part I think identifies the chart/sectional, A seems to indicate airports (V for VORs, etc.) - I'm looking to see if it's documented anywhere
hmm.... do you think I remember my DUAT(S) passwords? Foreflight has spoiled me....
hot diggity daffodil I guessed it right on the first try :P
bleh, still can't generate maps.

So my issue is that because I'm running the bot from Chrome, it's not allowing a cross-domain request. I'm gonna get the bot permanently setup on the server now, then the !!weather command should work
got to install phantomJS, Java and a few other things to get it running headless

5:21 AM
we're getting there... everything's installed, just configuring now

@DannyBeckett you know when I went down the road of setting up a bot I wound up starting a patch cycle instead :P

lmao @voretaq7
you can see the whole discussion at:

 Root Access

For all you Super Users out there. You have backups, right?
there's a fair bit to do to get it running headless/on a server

Cool, thanks for doing the work Danny!
I'm off to bed, have a good night guys.

no problem, night man!

5:42 AM
@voretaq7 Yeah, the K part is what's weird; I don't know what to manipulate to make it change. The rest seems about right.

!!tell 12984264 no

it seems a little slow

plenty of resources available on the server though
and a fast conx

@DannyBeckett there was a recent patch on Zirak's repository to add a random delay to replies because people were complaining that it was too fast

6:46 AM
you must be kidding?

I pulled it into my repo during a recent sync
I'm not kidding

if you disagree, feel free to add a comment to the issue or suggest reopening

ahahahaha

they follow a fairly decent software development process over there -- we try to be as professional as possible in the Issues of the main repository, even if much of the code is amateurish

6:47 AM
yeah it's all good!

they will take you seriously if you weigh in a dissenting opinion

nah I see the logic
just explains why it's a little slower than Caprica
/how I remember Caprica
not been in the JS room for a week or 2

either that or Lemon hasn't pulled in the latest commits to Caprica

yeah makes sense
So now I can't add commands via the console
I guess I add them to master?
Same for deleting commands?

6:49 AM
what do you mean by "add commands"?

you can add learned commands using the !!learn command

bot.addCommand({
	name:			'weather',
	description:	'Retreives METAR data for a specified ICAO airport',
	fun:			func,
	permissions:	{
						use:	'ALL',
						del:	'NONE'
					}
});
var func = function(args){

	var xhr = window.XMLHttpRequest ? new XMLHttpRequest() : new ActiveXObject('Microsoft.XMLHTTP');

	xhr.open('GET', 'http://aviationweather.gov/adds/dataserver_current/httpparam?dataSource=metars&requestType=retrieve&format=xml&stationString=' + args.parse() + '&hoursBeforeNow=4', true);

	xhr.onreadystatechange = function (){
		if(xhr.readyState === 4 && xhr.status === 200)
		{
			var xml = xhr.responseXML;
			args.send(xml.getElementsByTagName('response')[0].getElementsByTagName('data')[0].getElementsByTagName('METAR')[0].getElementsByTagName('raw_text')[0].tex

you can also implement your own javascript-based plugin commands with arbitrary functionality and full access to the underlying bot API by adding new files in the ~/dev/SO-ChatBot/source/plugins directory, and running ~/dev/reloadpjs.sh

(not necessarily working code)

6:50 AM
you only have to re-run the patch command if you run git pull
so don't worry about that for local modifications

ok great
ahhhhh, there's the commands!

the modifications in the patch are to source/IO.js and source/bot.js, so as long as you aren't making major changes to those two files, the shim hacks should continue to work uninterrupted, and their changes will get rolled into each and every reload via the amalgam build.js

think some of them might need deleting for Aviation

yeah, I recommend forking my repository or Zirak's repository on github to keep track of your changes
it's not required but I suggest it
if you don't like my changes, you can either revert individual patches, or just stop using my repository entirely and clone Zirak's -- the patch I cooked up for PhantomJS 1.9 should work on his repo as well as it does on mine

this is probably a good time to start using Git

6:52 AM
oh yes, most certainly

I do have a GitHub account, and Git installed on my PC
but I use SVN for all my dev work

git is a DVCS so it has one added logical step on top of SVN
you can have commits that are local to a repository
which are not in the centralized repository

ah ok!

so SVN's workflow goes: hack hack hack -> commit, and "commit" automatically sends your commit to the SVN repo

remind me again, briefly, what changes did you make?
right, exactly
and Git?

6:55 AM
git's workflow goes: hack hack hack -> commit to the local repo -> push to the remote repo -- a push is little more than "sending" commits already prepared locally over the wire

ok sounds good! :)

think of a push as similar to the cp command for commits, between git repositories
and a pull goes in the opposite direction

ok that makes sense

so svn update and git pull are very similar
svn checkout and git clone are very similar

so I'm forking Zirak's repo now

6:56 AM
but there is no actual analogy to git commit in svn land, because git commit doesn't talk to the remote repository

@DannyBeckett oh. you mean the changes in my repository

well, briefly, let me see if I can find the relevant effective commits... there are a lot of commits, but some of them have been obsoleted by merges with master

ok thanks

6:58 AM
there are nearly a dozen commits, starting chronologically with this one, which define the !!export and !!import commands

and does my fork automatically receive Zirak's changes?

the intermediary commits are just development work on the same thing
@DannyBeckett No -- when Zirak pushes commits to his repository, you will need to manually merge them to your repository, by running git pull https://github.com/Zirak/SO-ChatBot on a cloned tree of your repository on your server or your desktop, then perform any merge steps if necessary, then git commit --all, then git push
git automatically attempts to resolve merge conflicts, and if it can do so logically and safely, it does so. but if there are conflicts it can't resolve, you have to manually merge
