Ah yes, the old "Shirley the best kind of characters to put in a collaborative group setting are violent fanatical vigilantes" approach to game design.

Q: Using contingency to stay upright with false life

JackSo, in our current game, the PCs are getting pwned by a couple of bad guys. We ended last session in the middle of combat and will pick up next session. My wizard is already pretty seriously hurt and is really low on spell slots. I'm fairly likely to get dropped to 0 before my next turn. If I'm...

Q: Can every character apply untrained skills without limitation?

ruediWith 'trained only' skills it is obvious, but I am not sure whether everybody can use all other skills even without being an expert in it. Let us take as an example the 'Palming an object' action within the 'Thievery' Skill. Or let us take Arcana 'Recall Knowledge' action as a second one. I think...

Q: Does using the Artificer's Repulsion Shield happen before or after taking damage from a successful hit?

PatDoes using the Artificer's Repulsion Shield prevent the character from taking damage? Or does it happen after taking damage from a successful hit?

@HotRPGQuestions I have always considered "trained only" skills to be generally nonbeneficial; in almost every case --especially with pure knowledge-- it's more interesting and arguably more realistic to fiddle with difficulties and possible outcomes rather than to just deny the attempt entirely.

I have taken to advising players when their characters recognize something is out of their trained experience and sufficiently complicated that there could be real problems. E.g. characters without engineering training wanted to start and run a steam engine. Advised of the magnitude of the endeavor, the players went ahead.
Complications, ad-hoc solutions, and entertainment ensued.
Would have been a loss to say, "characters can't do it."

Q: What is the source of the "There are no hidden / secret rules" principle?

Groody the HobgoblinI repeatedly saw "There are no hidden rules" or "There are no secret rules" being given as a governing principle for interpreting rules in 5e, but was unable to find a question that documents the source for these statements in search - until recently. I found that this answer to the question "Wha...

Q: Can a PC be untrained in Perception?

indigochildHazards require a secret Perception check to notice them: For hazards with a minimum proficiency rank, roll only if someone is actively searching (using the Search activity while exploring or the Seek action in an encounter), and only if they have the listed proficiency rank or higher. (CRB, 520...

Q: How can I preserve books, but keep them accessible?

indigochildHow can I preserve my older, or more delicate, RPG books? My collection includes some older books (from the 1970s-1980s), some of which are in less than stellar condition. They may be paperbacks, have loose bindings, etc. I would like to preserve them for future enjoyment, but also keep them acce...

@BESW *WoD games tend to give a -1/-3 to untrained skills

@AncientSwordRage Aren't those CoD games?
17:52
@AncientSwordRage depends on edition and skill: it is "raise difficulty by 1 and lose a die" in some cases, and you can't roll on academics if you don't have it at all.

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica Call of Duty?
@TheOracle good luck on getting your t-shirt.

Q: Can a Hexblood cast Hex and Disguise Self on the same day?

vonBoomslangThere is some disagreement between myself and a friend as to the interpretation of the following feature: Hex Magic. You can cast the disguise self and hex spells with this trait. Once you cast either of these spells with this trait, you can't cast that spell with it again until you finish a lon...

Q: A thank-you to you all

SevenSidedDieI am retiring as a moderator this week. I made this decision with my heart a few months ago, made it with my head and let my fellow moderators know a few weeks ago, and now that the paperwork is sorted out, I'm letting the rest of the community know. The decision reaches back farther though, and...

Q: If I cast the Bestow Curse spell on myself, choosing the fourth curse, and then cast Life Transference, will I heal one creature for an extra 1d8?

KallenzThe fourth option of the Bestow Curse spell (PHB, p. 218; emphasis mine) states: [...] While the target is cursed, your attacks and spells deal an extra 1d8 necrotic damage to the target. The Life Transference spell (XGE, p. 160; emphasis mine) states: [...] You sacrifice some of your health t...

Can somebody remind me mathematically it matters if I fill a while moderator election ballot, or leave some candidate blank?
21:47
@AncientSwordRage depends on community size: if you vote, your vote is counted, if not, you didn't vote, which in a small community can result in your least favorite winning.
21:58
@Trish the only remaining candidates are my least favourite
@AncientSwordRage then you could counter candidate.
It's N positions and 2*N candidates, I've voted for N candidates already
@Trish I'm not high enough level for that spell
then don't add the extras - that's the better math
22:39
@Trish any why?
you have already voted for those you want, if those don't make it, your votes don't bolster those candidates you don't want.
@Trish if my candidates don't make it then I don't mind who wins

Q: Would wearing full plate armor cause slashing damage to be converted into bludgeoning damage?

NemoAmetPlate armor covers the whole body of the adventurer. A character in my game has resistance to bludgeoning damage but not slashing damage. He was arguing that since the armor covered his whole body, he would still receive damage due to the fact that the attack hit, but since it didn't slice throug...
