I'm pretty surprised that I didn't see this above
@JoelHarmon your welcome to post it here, but that's more sort of a Reading Room/The Restaurant at the End of the Universe thing to share maybe?
And even then, I've been sharing with smaller groups so the discussion doesn't spill over to those who haven't seen it yet.
I posted it here because I'm (barely) a regular-ish participant here, and I know there are some other fans of his around. I also posted it without commentary, for reasons that should be clear to anyone who viewed it.
@JoelHarmon that's all good with me

Q: Is there a difference between Slowed 1 and Stunned 1?

IfusasoSlowed 1 and Stunned 1 both reduce a Creature's Actions by 1 on their next turn; what's more, they don't even stack per the line in Stunned saying that it overwrites Slow. What difference, besides some creatures possibly being immune to one but not the other (which is less common than in Pathfind...

CrimReiIs it legal to cast Cure Wounds with an action, and then use the sorcerer's Quickened Spell Metamagic option to cast Eldritch Blast as a bonus action? @BESW I will let you know when I have a draft, maybe you’d like to read it and see whether it helps your brain work!
(The drama, incidentally, is less intense than I made it out to be. The mahjong club president is one of my best friends, and she’s just fed up with giving the same explanations every week to the same people. Still, it forms part of the social politics of my grade and I track that stuff cause I don’t get it otherwise)
@BardicWizard I'd love to see it just because, when it's ready, helpful to me or not!
I don't always understand the things you make but I enjoy seeing them anyway.
@BESW thanks, glad to know somebody likes to see them

@BESW the gist is covered in the first ~2 minutes, but I get that click-baity titles are off-putting
Fwiw, I watch his regular videos and ended up reading the comments before deciding it was worth watching
09:27
Yeah, I find those fake-apology-joke videos rather tasteless at the best of times, and using it to make an important announcement seems like a poor choice.
If he thinks it's a good idea to reference that genre of video in the title, he's risking any trust I'm willing to give that he's gonna get to the point or that the point will be worth my while. And then if I do click through, it's over 16 minutes long?

@GroodytheHobgoblin Take it easy in the tag edits
The whole front page is glyph of warding questions.
When undertaking retagging projects, we prefer to do it in small batches (<=5) to not flood the front page.
@GroodytheHobgoblin pinging one more time…
Hi Tomas - got it. Will refrain for now then, and do it here and there over time. Sorry for the inconvenience.
It’s a good candidate spell for having its own tag due to the question volume (similar to wish and simulacrum) but now the entire front page is questions about glyph, and will be for most of the day.
@ThomasMarkov There is no direct messaging on the platform it seems, other than putting a comment that evenutally shows in your inbox?
Mods can “super ping”, but there is no direct message for regular users.
Yes, I see what you mean. Apologies, I should have realized it would have that effect.
11:29
@GroodytheHobgoblin There are 67 more questions mentioning the spell that haven’t been tagged yet, but not all of them will need it. Do five a day for the next week and a half and it should cover all of them.
@Tho
@ThomasMarkov sounds good, thank you
It’s a good candidate for its own tag not just because it has a high question volume, but because it presents unique and complex mechanics. Scorching ray is mentioned in 100 questions,
but not because it has weird mechanics, but because it’s a popular choice for damage dealing Wizards and sorcerers. It would not be a good candidate for its own tag because it doesn’t present interesting problems itself, it’s just a use case for other features that do present interesting problems
Is it worth a meta to discuss the tag need?
This feels similar to tiny hut
@NautArch it probably was, but we’re a little ahead of the curve there at this point.
@NautArch My bet would be that the favored take was “it’s probably fine, just do it in small batches”.
@GroodytheHobgoblin Naut has a good point though, it’s never a bad idea to coordinate projects like this on meta first
I'd suggest a post now to see if it's necessary or if we should roll back.not too late to undo.
11:41
@NautArch mods can burninate the tag without bumping the questions I think
@NautArch if you ask the question I’ll write a response later
@ThomasMarkov exactly. Let's make sure we need to do this, because I'm not sure we do.
9
Q: Should we be tagging individual spells?

nitsua60I came across a question today tagged with the (partial) name of the specific spell the question contemplates. Now I like a tiny-hut as much as the next sheep, and I do believe in emergent folksonomy. But is this a point where we, as a community, say "hmm... maybe not?" To be a little cleare...

@GroodytheHobgoblin ^
@NautArch fair enough, I’ll take the L
The real question: should we burninate the ones we already have?
On another note, I still think we should dupe all of the “can wish do blank” questions to that one I answered.
12:03
@GroodytheHobgoblin Editors are also pingable in a posts comments, which should notify immediately
I was gonna start out with saying we don't need the tag, but I do see how it is similar enough enough to wishes and simulacra. Is there a better generic term? The fact that I'm not immediately thinking of it suggests no..
But do we need to be making new tags for spells?
@NautArch I would still say generally no, but I explained my reasoning above when comparing to scorching ray.
12:19
@Someone_Evil Are you suggesting we should add the tag? If so, a new answer to that meta would be good.
@NautArch I do think generally no. It's hypothetically not about the spell, but the specific concept that 5e (and others) implement as a spell. But I don't know a better term than that spell name
Gotta love tag ideas... Before Echo-Knight would have been considered a bad tag, and now we just have it XD
And are we too focused on d&d in creating this tag?
@NautArch Add the tag? The tag now exists, no? So the question would be whether to remove it. Unless I've gotten too confused
I may be mistaken...when was the tag created?
I thought it was just made, but maybe just applied a lot today?
12:22
@NautArch Well, we do have Battle-Master and Echo-Knight which are exclusively 5e
Yes, ok. I think we are on the same page just slightly different words
I wonder if there's a way to find "tags that only exist on questions also tagged [dnd-5e]"
It looks like it was just added to all of those questions, but was it there before?
That seems easy to burninate
12:28
@Exempt-Medic yes. Do some math: “[dnd-5e][tag]” - “-[dnd-5e][tag]”
The age of the tag doesn't really affect our ability to remove tags. If it comes to it, syn.ing into spells is the usual remedy
Or SEDE probably can find all of them without having to check individual tags.
But I'm not sure, I see the arguments both ways
@Someone_Evil that was more of a gut check of was this in use before? If not, then the meta guidance seems to apply.
I think much of what (admittedly I) argued over the simulacra tag applies here aswell. Perhaps less strongly, but it isn't clear cut no to that tag for me
12:39
Then we definitely need a new answer to that meta
And I'm not sure tag intent was for concepts rather than th spell itself. Hard to tell tho.
And all of the tagged questions are D&D
Which leads to spell>concept
That mostly says the concept is only used, or at least asked about, within D&D/PF
Is that true?
I'm also not sure intent is the best lens. It's useful for the general address (don't generally make tags for individual spells), but it doesn't answer whether the tag actually works on its own
@NautArch Uhm, what aspect of it?
@Someone_Evil That it's only been asked about in D&D/PF?
But again, if we need new guidance, then let's update the question. If this needs it's own meta for discussion like simulacra (which isn't a spell, but a concept as you said.), then we should do that, too.
But a single day's effort of creating a new tag that appears to apply only to spells within the D&D system just doesn't sit right with me.
@NautArch If it isn't, that would be useful examples to work with
12:51
Mmmmm I’ve an idea
Instead of a tag for glyph, how bout a tag for all spells that have caster-defined triggers. Call it [conditional-spells]
That is a concept.
@ThomasMarkov This feels...wrong...for tag creation. I dunno, we're trying to force a reason and that seems to be different than the tag system.
But I also really don't understand the tags...so /shrug.
My main point is we seem to have guidance here. We can apply it, or we need a separate discussion and/or new guidance.
Similar to TM's thought, 5e's symbol falls squarely into the same concept as glyph, right?
And I'm not sure the intersection isn't best caught by [spells][traps] (+ evt. name)
@Someone_Evil Yeah, and contingency.
@Someone_Evil Do we need this tag? Or are we trying to make a tag for X reasons?
But yes, I agree with your second bit.
Tags confuddle me.
@NautArch I feel like it's probably true of most tags. [grin]
13:00
Hmm... agreement is breaking down a bit. The actual trigger bit isn't (that often) the cause of questions. I mean we have a couple, but a lot of the question (as far I can tell quickly) aren't about that but other uses of the spell
Concerns around the trigger would overlap with contingency but I'm not sure how much else is
13:13
I'm gonna write a meta about wish.
13:43
@GroodytheHobgoblin We've all done it. Once =D
@ThomasMarkov In fact, I'd say that any time one is undertaking something that could be described as "a project," it's incumbent to seek some agreement/validation/guidance.
s/agreement/consensus
@nitsua60 Excuse you, I'll have you know I did it at least twice before I got the memo.
@nitsua60 Yeah, I'm down with that.
@ThomasMarkov lolfigsl
The *wish* point (that I think @GroodytheHobgoblin made in their meta A?) is an interesting one, though. If I want to browse around the *spell* wish, its ubiquity as a plain-English term makes that a little tough.
Or does it? How does the search "wish [spells]" compare to what one would want from the search "[wish]"?
Is that ^^ to much search-fu to be expecting of the browser?
We have 28 questions tagged wish but not spells, but I don't see any of those being harmed by synning wish into spells (should it come to that)
@nitsua60 I think we should dupe all the "can wish do blank" questions to the one with my answer and then syn to spells.
cuz theres a decent chunk of them that all have the same formula.
But Im gonna ask a meta about that today.
Which will be "If we dont want to dupe these questions, why shouldnt I post my answer to all of them?"
Why shouldnt I farm necromancer badges?
14:08
speaking of dupes @ThomasMarkov
Then should we make a question for every spell and cantrip combination? something to the effect of a few thousand questions?
I really don't get why this cure+eldritch blast question isn't a dupe.
@goodguy5 Absolutely we should /S
I'm not trying to die on this hill, I'm just trying to figure it out
And for the record, I upvoted it and the answers. I think it's valuable. I think it's just also a dupe
In this case, the nuance of "technically it doesnt work, but it does if you rearrange it" is specific to this question and isnt captured by the dupe target. A reader who is redirected to the question with the big table may just stop when they find the proposed combination, and never figure out that switching the order makes it legal.
Circling back to Glyph-of-warding...should we burninate/meta/something else?
@NautArch We should burninate meta. All of it.
2
14:14
@ThomasMarkov hrm........
@goodguy5 Going off our three dupe criteria, you're right, it meets the first two, but the failure of the target to capture that nuance is to me a compelling reason to let it stand.
I think that I just disagree with that, but I'm willing to chalk that up to "creative differences".

Like I said, I don't want to push the issue, but I really don't see why I'm not right on it, so to say it.
And if we get more questions where the nuance of which one gets quickened comes up, we can dupe them to this one.
deal
@goodguy5 It isnt a big deal to me either way, that's just my perspective on why I voted to leave open.
My take isnt any more valid than anyone else's.
14:18
Sure, I get that
You can ask on meta, I'll write an answer and we can see how the community votes it.
yea, see, I don't care that much lol.
I'm about 3 forks short of caring that much
14:37
@NautArch I think a meta is in order.

@GroodytheHobgoblin It would be great if you want to continue your tagging if you could post a meta question about why you are doing itt, what the goal is, and whether or not it should be done. I think we have to determine if this needs to burninated or if we need a plan for rolling out the tag.
@Trish Yes, will do. Thomas already educated me that 5/day is the way to go with such things
@NautArch: there is a meta question discussing this already, here
@GroodytheHobgoblin That's the general discussion - yours is specific. Unless you're saying you are going to follow that and not continue tagging?
The reason I was doing it is I thought that is how things are being done, based on oberving such tags for wish and simulacrum, to other high question density spells. GoW is in the same kind of spells. Lots of questions, over 100. Many different things going on from triggers, to what can it detect, to what can you put in to what can it target etc pp
Its a complex spell, in that it affords some kind of permanency and encourages people trying to find ways to exploit/break it (as I am sure you know)
Sure, but large projects like this shouldn't be undertaken without a discussion first- especially when the general guidance is don't do it at all.
I can continue or stop. I think if we stop, we should strip all the tags I made, else I would continue, but at a modest pace that will finalize the tagging in the next 2 weeks
18:12
I agree, if you don't want to continue, we should burninate the tag (not strip from questions.)
Still learning the ropes :)
If you want to continue, then I'd suggest posting a meta about it
That way the community can help guide
I personally would continue, but I'm happy to go with what you als mods/old hands think is the way to go
@GroodytheHobgoblin so many ropes!
@GroodytheHobgoblin The general concensus is: NO tags for specific spells.
18:13
OK will do
@GroodytheHobgoblin If you think it's a good idea - then post the meta.
Don't just make the call yourself.
But if you're decision is to not, then we can just ask the mods to burninate.
@GroodytheHobgoblin I look forward to you trying to make your case that the tag serves a good purpose.
18:29
gimme a genre
i'll describe in 10 words or less
@Catofdoom2 neo-ancient Wuxia
example please lol @Trish
@Catofdoom2 Quing Dynasty Wuxia novels.
i meant video games but okay
ancient martial arts often in china and magic stuff @Trish
that right?
and all wrong there :P
18:38
@Trish damn. close for not knowing what it is? lol
"traveling warriors that adher to a codeof honor that differs from the law"
@Trish that seems more like a type of plot
Magic? not in it. ancient? I am talking about novels written in quing dynasty. China? Didn't exist for hundreds of years then. Martial arts - that's the only word that is correct.
Wuxia is nothing but a type of plot and story type.
nice
so not a genre?
it's both
it's getnerally "We are warriors of sorts that adher to the rules of the fighter society, which is a shadow society..."
yes, the genre is OLD

well most are if you look back

@cat Is the 8th Level Necromancy the hardest D&D Spell to cast?
@DeadLegend001 what!?
i thought you didn't know about DND
@DeadLegend001 hardest how?
because difficultly on dice roll no. difficultly from time investment possibly
@cat If it isnt hard does one consider the Tarrasque hard to kill?
@DeadLegend001 its supposed to be impossible so yes
@cat Okay
The most impossible monsters to kill are the ones we create for ourselves.
20:58
The real monsters are the friends we make along the way.
level 8 necromancy isn't easy mind you just not the most difficult spell @DeadLegend001
@cat okay that makes more sense
someone correct me if i'm wrong but believe their are spells that require divne magic i.e. you have to be a god
@Catofdoom2 in 5e? not really.
You're outside the realm of what 5e defines, though I believe older editions did to some extent
21:02
@Someone_Evil i mix up 3e and 5e alot
I don't think that's too uncommon, but makes it doubly important that we clarify what we're asking about
@DeadLegend001 should i explain the editions and stuff?

@Catofdoom2 The: 6 A Dire Wolf tho
lol
@DeadLegend001 explain please
I personally thnk we should be able to tame them...They're cool
have you played??
@cat yes we had this conversation already i played when i yas younger
@DeadLegend001 what edition?
21:10
@cat I believe 3e
3.5 or 3?
the older one
so 3
@DeadLegend001 i have somthing to tell you
don't @ all thats not cool
The "@all" syntax doesn't do anything in site chats.
I mean @all doesn't do anything
it's not like discord
21:12
@goodguy5 he didn't know that
its the point of it
maybe he did idk.
I was just saying
Very few people only played 3 (without playing 3.5).
3 had a bunch of goofy balance issues that were too numerous to errata, so they rereleased it.
@Catofdoom2 you don't need to act as a "chaperone" for a new chat member. Guidance as necessary is fine, but constant pinging and giving instructions without being asked to is a bit over the top.
@goodguy5 people were being mean to dead so i'm trying to explain the problem to him without taking sides
who's being mean to whom?
@goodguy5 uuuum. i can't tell you that
21:17
@Catofdoom2 because you are unable to point to any mean actions, or you feel that it's not allowed?
@goodguy5 because it'll make people angry that i told on them
@goodguy5 i really just want us to all be friends and happy
This isn't elementary school, there's no tattling. And no need to make everyone be friends. There are a handful of people on the stack I don't like, and I'm sure a few people that don't like me, as well.
You move on and act like an adult.
@goodguy5 are we friends...?
At any rate, my point was that I had not witnessed any mean-spirited actions towards our new associate, DeadLegend, and was hoping for clarity on the matter
In any case, new users are welcome here. Just keep in mind that it is a public text chat, and it's generally the first chat room that folks would enter from the main Q&A site.
21:21
@Catofdoom2 No, we're internet acquaintances.
@goodguy5 good engough for me
lol
we can be internet frenemies
@doppelgreener some of us are.
@doppelgreener @goodguy5 we can't be internet friends?
is that not a thing?
nice
it is a thing!
21:25
@Catofdoom2 Unless I'm missing something or you're referring to someone elsewhere, but I'm not seeing whatever you're referring to. I saw a couple of points where information (/pointers to) was provide when it was fairly clear that information was sought and needed. If any of that was perceived as hostile I'm sure it was unintended and we could easily dispel the notion. But it's probably better to let Dead chime in on their own
@Catofdoom2 we could be, theoretically, but you and I don't have that much rapport. I don't know you well. We've interacted maybe 10 or 15 times? and it's generally superficial.
Friends is a nebulous term... Somewhat cheapened/diluted by Facebook
@doppelgreener Do we still get to hate-cuddle?
Wait whats a hate-cuddle
21:26
@DeadLegend001 very angry cuddles
@Someone_Evil I guess but I won't enjoy it
Umm...................
@goodguy5 I get on with GG5 and I've known them for a while in chat but I'd still say they're more of an acquaintance than a friend
@AncientSwordRage eh, I never had an issue with that in particular the compound word "Facebook Friend" covered the distinction from actual friends for me.
imma step out while this happens
@goodguy5 same, but then people online I know IRL start using/confusing the two...
@Someone_Evil (some strong language I suppose)
tbh, I would put almost everyone in here in the acquaintance bucket, with fewer exceptions than I would need one hand to count.

And also @Xirema who is a math elemental.
@Someone_Evil this is marvelous
@Someone_Evil Thanks for the laugh out loud
21:30
LRR are really good
@goodguy5 according to your defintion i don't think i ave any friends lol
If you don't, that's okay.
I have 1ish friend from before college. maybe 2-3 more people who I would call friends, but don't talk to from that same time.

a handful of friends from college

1-2 friends from Missouri
a handful from when we moved to chicago
and a handful from when we moved back to philly.
Friends are few and far between. They're people that you trust and like and root for. They're people that you actually know and share things with.

And sometimes, they're a little bit more. Sometimes they're basically family. People you love and cherish and can rely on when the chips are down.
oh snap, it's the fuzz @V2Blast
@goodguy5 Haha, hi. :D
How's it going?
Humans are very odd creatures with a multitude of differences - some of which make you incompatible with certain other ones. I meet plenty of people who are perfectly likeable or better, that I do not care at all to be around. We don't mesh.

And there are a few people who I like very much who are not great people.

It's a very weird unnavigable maze of life trying to find your humans out there.
@goodguy5 maybe i'm to open then

So, you were looking to run a session zero for an upcoming game? Did you find the linked questions to be useful?
@DeadLegend001 I did enjoy that movie
Eh...kinda
I like it too i just watch it too mny times at home with siblings
@DeadLegend001 whats the campaign about?
21:49
I don't really know im not the one making it my friend is
@DeadLegend001 then why were you asking the questions
I need to know for when i make my own
Having a session zero would still be a good idea. It helps the GM and players sync up their expectations (assuming they plan to have a regular group of players), and that's kind of essential to any good tabletop campaign.
@MikeQ That is actually really helpful thx
What should I look for in finding people to make a D&D party
As in finding players?
21:53
There's a common myth that the GM is supposed to prepare the entire campaign world and story, in secret, by themselves, with no input from players. And that attitude is very counterproductive. It tends to cause burnout and clashing expectations, which can make the campaign fall apart.
@DeadLegend001 you should like them
Yes tier till called partys right?
mostly just people willing to work together and get along.

Sometimes you'll find someone who's just a clashing personality at the table, but usually decent people make decent gamers
@DeadLegend001 Yes and no, we often talk about a playgroup of players who play a party of characters. And distinguishing between the two can be very helpful
21:56
ugh, I used to play with this one guy who's a swell guy, but omg he always wants to play these anime knockoff characters that are just bulls in a china shop.

tbh, I think he's more just interested in being at D&D than playing D&D
Yep, tabletop RPGs (including D&D) are fundamentally social games, which means they are more fun when played in a group of people who are fun to interact with. Being smart and having system mastery are secondary priorities.
Yes, I know someone like that he just wants to be Anime characters all the time
And there's nothing inherently wrong with basing a character on another character, but it should somewhat work within the group.
Gelatinous Cube tho
Best monster in the game by far
