6:00 PM
It's going to be a full (supplementary) set for that universe

A lot of people seem upset about it

6:30 PM
From what I've read the some people in the WH40K fanbase seem to think that the MTG fanbase is too toxic and will ruin it ::shrug::

I like MTG, but haven't had the opportunity to get new cards for a while (or play against anyone but my sister) so my deck is probably woefully underpowered

@bobble This is why I don't like the idea of MtG. Your ability shouldn't be decided by how much money you spend.

I can beat my sister though :D Current deck is perfectly optimized against hers

@NautArch The pay-to-win model is exactly why WotC does like the idea of MtG.

@AncientSwordRage Pot vs Kettle IMO
@MikeQ Pay-to-win doesn't actually benefit WotC that much though, it's strictly only beneficial to after-market/secondary sellers. Wizards doesn't sell singles, only packs, and singles are where the money is made. WotC only profits by volume

6:44 PM
Isnt it pay-to-keep-playing? If I buy a bunch of new cards today, wont those cards be illegal in like a year?

Yeah in the short term, tournament play forces competitive players to regularly buy new packs from new sets. In the long term, even in non-tournament play, the power drift makes most old cards obsolete anyway.

@ThomasMarkov Not exactly. There are several different formats. Standard (the most common format) involves the last 1-2 years worth of sets. Modern involves every set released from 8th edition to present, Legacy allows all cards with certain bans for power-level reasons, Vintage is like Legacy, but with way less bans, Commander (formerly the fan-made format EDH) allows everything but with special deck-building restrictions and format specific bans.
Pioneer is a newer format that, like Modern, involves cards from Return to Ravnica (2012) to present
For reference, 8th edition was released in 2003

Hm, interesting. I haven't played in years... Didn't realize it was that nuanced.

7:06 PM
Well, Standard, Legacy, and Vintage have been around forever, with Legacy and Vintage involving the most broken cards from all of MtG history, and only getting worse as new cards are put out. Modern was introduced around 2016ish, kind of as an alternative to the massive power levels of Vintage and Legacy so that there was an official format that players could actually use their old cards in, and Pioneer was introduced only a few years ago, to serve much the same purpose as Modern once served.
EDH has similarly been around forever, but it became the official Commander format around 2014 with the release of the very first Commander decks (with a bevy of unique cards for the format, such as Command Tower) to boot
I think Commander is actually the most popular format as well
like, technically the most popular
I believe it's the most popular casual/home format, but standard is the most "popular" at local events
and I use the quotes because its popularity is mostly a side-effect of it just being the most commonly used format by the stores for FNM
And it also has the side benefit of being the easies to adjudicate rules disputes because there are less likely to be crazy interactions

7:43 PM
@doppelgreener That's well said, I wear my PPE whenver I design ...
@AncientSwordRage sorry, I just threw up a little bit in my mouth, but from a corporate perspective we have seen this coming since Plane Shift Zendikar ...

@KorvinStarmast To be fair, WotC has been pretty clear with their intentions. Something along the lines of "We're testing the waters with these MtG IP's being released as useable in D&D because it's easier and cheaper and if it goes belly up, no huge losses, and if it goes over well, we'll consider releasing a D&D set for MtG"
I'm paraphrasing of course

@RevenantBacon I am going to estimate that your assessment is in the high 90 percentiles of how that went down. 😎
I don't do MtG, and I thank the heavens that I never did. I have a bad enough Hearthstone habit as it is ...

gasp you're a nerd?
4

Gentlemen, you can't talk about nerd stuff in here, this is the D&D room!
2

@MikeQ Mike, I mentioned to V2 about the "hey, I give him inspiration" during combat and how I don't prefer to do that. I"ll need to make clear why to Amanda, and the rest of the group, before next time. Your thoughts?
@bobble I am a grandpa. That is my superpower, and I have a coffee cup to prove it!

7:58 PM
you could be a nerd grandpa

@KorvinStarmast Pics or it didn't happen

@KorvinStarmast Probably best to discuss on a medium that the entire player group has access to, not just here

@KorvinStarmast Yes, the MtG to D&D crossover went very well in the D&D community as far as I could tell
Sweet mug

7:59 PM
@MikeQ actually, if you could drop your initial thoughts in the back room, that would be fine since I am still mulling over it ... and I value your judgment
I'll follow up later on the forum
@RevenantBacon Really? I thought the plane shift zendikar was ... poor. That's the polite way to say it. But maybe that's me being a grumpy gus
And the only thing from Ravnica that I care for is the Order Domain, Cleric.
@ThomasMarkov As a follow on to this, one of these days I am going to make a Pirate / Highwayman rogue (Swashbuckler) vHuman with the crossbow expert feat at level 1.
"I first produced my pistol, and then produced my rapier, crying 'Stand and Deliver!' - or the Devil he may take you..."

Variant Human with crossbow expert is probably the strongest 1st level build.

@ThomasMarkov HAM on a vHuman Paladin isn't bad either

I think this is a good candidate for an optimization question

Hmmm, the temptation to do that with an Arcane Trickster is nearly overwhelming ...
@ThomasMarkov ... as do I, but the odds that I get to be a player ever again is sinking ... brother has delayed his return to DMing, and our Saturday Night game just lost a player, and I am not going to make two of the next four sessions ... 😪
I am right back to where I was in AD&D: K's always the DM.

What should be the criteria?
Highest expected damage output for a five round combat fully rested?

8:11 PM
@ThomasMarkov for the question? If it's me, I am looking for the most flexible use of sneak attack (and if we use SCAG Swashbuckler the question changes versus the XGTE version) to be 'always on' for a rogue Pirate

It's first level so multiple five round combats in a single day will either level themp up or kill them

That too.
@ThomasMarkov Not to mention the standard expected duration of a fight, I kid you not, is three rounds
Learned that from a guy who was in the play test. But that was also built on a medium encounter for a four person party

@ThomasMarkov s/themp/them

I'm thinking 5 round combat fully rested, assume you won't die

Why five?

8:13 PM
You can die much faster than that at first level

True.
"Three sir." Right. Three questions.

@Someone_Evil You can live, and die, in LA. (Sorry, that's a movie title from the 80's, Willem Dafoe and William Peterson
I really liked the movie .. but I wonder if I'd like it as much now.
Thinking through the build: 10 Str, 15 +1 Dex. 13 +1 Con 10 Int 10 Wis 14 Cha
Hmm, is hand crossbow light? Checking.

It is
Im going to include some math help

OH, wow, short sword in one hand, hand xbow in the other!

Assume an AC 12 target with 12s across the stats

8:19 PM
I'd assume AC 13 or 14 ...

I'll include the math for calculating expected damage with and without advatnage

Want me to ask the question?

No Im gonna think about it some more

Hmm, at second level, if I take a bonus action to hide, attack with xbow with advantage, I get no second attack since I have already used the bonus action, right?
And as soon as I attack I am not hidden anymore, I think.

That's correct.

8:21 PM
@ThomasMarkov That new tasha's rule about "if you just stand still you get advantage" makes this spooky good ...
I think I'll name the Highwayman Sundance Maybe I'll roll that into pseudo Italian ... gimme a sec ...

@KorvinStarmast Well, as evidence against that, if it had gone over poorly, they probably would've scrapped the D&D MtG card set

Hmm, Soldanza, or Danzasol ... Dan Zasol
@RevenantBacon Were you referring to Ravnica, or the original plane shift stuff that came out shortly after 5e was released?
@RevenantBacon I didn't say it went over poorly, I thnk it was poorly done (bad balance, the theme) but hey, it's not my revenue stream, so who am I to say? Well, the Magic System (Five Colors) does not fit D&D's 8 schools, for one ...
But here's what I'd like to see for 6th edition ... scrap the 8 schools and use the five color magic system from MtG as the basis for the magic system ... and find a way to fold in DarkSun Defiler/Preserver themes ... 😁
And make the default world Dark Sun. Scrap FR.

@NautArch there's which formats that you can do well while spending little. At the extreme end, that's a format where only every card under 10¢ (?) Is legal. Also, I've seen at least one YouTube video showing how swapping in 'budget' cards can improve a deck.
@bobble we all are, at least a little
@KorvinStarmast I'd buy it

8:42 PM
@AncientSwordRage There's also the Pauper format, where you can only use cards of Common rarity.

@AncientSwordRage In my best Denis Leary voice somebody bring me the head of Ed Greenwood (said with humorous intention)

8:56 PM
@RevenantBacon yeah, but some of those decks cost ... Triple figures... 😱

Most of them don't though.

9:21 PM
@RevenantBacon true

10:12 PM
@KorvinStarmast I'm going to have to look that up. The schools don't seem relevant anymore.

10:43 PM
@ThomasMarkov FWIW we have the following question: "What is the most DPR possible at level 1?" and it also would be good to consider all the wacky edge cases like an Aarakocra falling onto an enemy to deal damage, magic items, party composition, all that jazz... Oh also all the optional rules like just training to get more feats

1 hour later…
