@NautArch my interpretation is that there is only one part, and everything else in the body hangs off of that
Hehe I flagged it
the fact remains, we're a better suited stack for answering, and it's more useful to our users than history's users
how we justify that with policy/interpretation is important, but doesn't seem to capture the reason behind the policy
@AncientSwordRage I agree with that. ALthough the question of are answers for the user or the community does come up.
@AncientSwordRage Aye, the snobbery of that reply is a tidy encapsulation of why I noped out of english chat in less than a week, many years ago.
@BESW I've not even braved their chat
15:03
@BESW that's when my downvote showed up.
I was told I should know better as a long time user of that stack how to ask word suggestions posts... I'm barely ever on that site
@AncientSwordRage Every conversation was a debate.
@BESW I think some people like that
FWIW, I got a good answer here
Yeah, but I've met people who will back down if you point out that's what they're doing and it's not appropriate for a casual conversation.
This comment really hits the nail on the head: "English seems to be a Very Serious Site. They probably don't like to acknowledge that there are words for non-existent creatures."
15:07
@ThomasMarkov they're not gonna like beowulf
@AncientSwordRage I have a 1959 book of cryptids by popular science-explainer Willy Ley, Exotic Zoology, which gives alicorn as the term for the horn of a unicorn or unicorn substitute, and doesn't mention any other use of the term.
(Ley doesn't mention pegasuses, though.)
Do they mention any other winged versions of barnyard animals?
Does the cockatrice count?
@Someone_Evil Now we're getting to a good conversation!
@BESW We had a player in a game pick up a cockatrice and use it as a weapon
DM allowed it and it was awesome
ooh that's a much worse idea if you're dealing with the historical cockatrice.
15:10
@BESW only if it lets you play magic the gathering
I once reanimated a large cockatrice as a zombie
Hm... seeing as a winged horse is horse+wings, would a winged chicken have a total of 4 wings? For a powerful amount of flapping
@RevenantBacon have you ever tried that in a role-playing game though?
@Someone_Evil The unicorn, my favorite barnyard animal XD
2
There's some evidence that they were a conflation of the awful stink from a well tapping into a sulphur-infused aquifer, and the fossils that were sometimes found in the same rock when people investigated.
Their original form tended to involve lethally bad smells.
15:12
@AncientSwordRage Nope, whenever I play a necromancer, we only ever fight boring weak critters. Being a necromancer has become "One of the things RevenantBacon is not allowed to do in RPG's"
Because it has the side effect of making the game kinda boring
@RevenantBacon ah so you've only done that in real life :p
Ya
@AncientSwordRage I mean, hasn't everyone once or twice?
@BESW makes sense
Anyways, if we fight powerful critters, I reanimate them as (less, but not much) powerful minions, and if we fight weak critters, it's kinda boring as we mow through them like a scythe through wheat
(The basilisk and cockatrice were distinct creatures until a 14th-century translation conflated the two.)
15:21
Good morning!
@BardicWizard That it is.
It is! Feeling good, Todd!
@ThomasMarkov yeah, it’s all foggy here! I like fog a lot
Also I can sleep in!
It’s really pretty outside this morning! And I’m using all the exclamation points!
@BardicWizard !!!!!111!!!1!
I went to bed at 8pm and got up at 530.
15:26
@NautArch no!!!! Give them back!!!!!!!! They’re mine!!!!!!!!!!
I managed to exercise self control and turn off the Mandalorian before I binged the whole thing.
@ThomasMarkov dooo itttt
I'll make sure to tell folks no spoilers next game session
Gonna finish tonight probably.
@BESW Kinda like it's the end of my vacation <wry smile>
But we've got a backyard ice rink getting going, some good sledding tracks developed, and a quiet few weeks ahead of us, so it should be good.
@nitsua60 on our way!
15:30
@ThomasMarkov that’s pretty good! I went to bed after 11pm and only got up about half an hour ago, around 7am!
@nitsua60 I don’t think anything that involves kids on break is going to be quiet.......
@BardicWizard That why I slept 9.5 hours last night, my wife and children are at the grandparents for christmas.
@ThomasMarkov i don’t think I’ve slept 9.5 hours at a stretch since I started 7th grade
@BardicWizard same (the liking fog bit, not the it's foggy here bit)
The only reason I've ever wanted to live in London is because of how foggy it is there, like all the time
15:47
@RevenantBacon I can’t stand it all the time, but the SJV fog is pretty present on winter mornings
So either you learn to love it most of the time or you spend the winter somewhere else
If it could be gloomy and foggy 24/7, that would be my dream.
Overcast, with a light drizzle
not even a hint of the sun coming through
@RevenantBacon move to san francisco!
(borrowed an exclamation point from BW)
@NautArch No, that's smog. Not quite the same :p
@RevenantBacon The OG fog.
@NautArch the San Francisco fog is pretty cool too but that’s because it’s by the bay! I live where the fog comes from the rivers and that’s fun too cause it’s gone by lunch and then it’s sunny and cold the rest of the day (except when it’s raining)
15:52
Ya know what? Screw it, let's go. I never liked my lungs anyways
@RevenantBacon hey! It’s not that smoggy!!!!!!!!
Listen here buster, keep it up, and I'm gonna confiscate some of those exclamation marks
@NautArch !!11!!!1one!!!
Okay but what if I do this‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽
Also, did you know that the SF fog is named Karl? It’s so ever present that it has a name
@RevenantBacon no!!! They’re all mine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
15:55
@BardicWizard when was it named? I don't remember that when I was a kid.
@BardicWizard I didnt believe you. But the sanfranciso fog has an instagram. And their name is Karl.
Apparently its more recent than you being kid.
@ThomasMarkov just slightly
@BardicWizard That's it, these are getting put away. [!!!!!!!!!!]ノ(ಠ_ಠノ)
You can have them back when you calm down
@BardicWizard Also, that's amazing
@RevenantBacon no!!!!!!!
I think @BardicWizard's power is an unlimited supply of exclamation points
16:04
@AncientSwordRage I had caffeine this morning! Caffeine makes me excited and I use lots of exclamation points!!!
@BardicWizard A friend was in a GURPS game once, and their character's power was being caffeine fuelled...
What??? Unlimited? Then what am I doing with all of these?
(╯°□°)╯︵[¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡]
@AncientSwordRage Was the Sapient Psychic Blueberry Muffin in the game too by any chance?
@AncientSwordRage 2real4me
16:28
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica no I don't think so
@RevenantBacon indeed
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica I think it was more likely a futurama reference
16:51
Extended rant incoming
@BardicWizard SJV fog is fun until you have to drive in it, and then it's murderous. As a kid I thought it was perfectly normal to have (1) long stretches of highway where Dad drives at 20 mph because nobody can see, (2) road signs for measuring your visibility distance, and (3) TV news reports about 30-car pileups.
Why can't people do their jobs? So I work for a distribution company. We sell all kinds of stuff, OTC medication, beauty products, cooking utensils, etc.
We also sell seasonal merchandise. Our seasonal stuff comes in the form of a display unit with product already loaded in, which we get prepackaged directly from the manufacturer in bulk quantities, then ship it to stores.
For seasonal items, the process goes like this: we order some something, like maybe an assortment of winter-themed puzzles. The manufacturer sends us the displays cost information, UPC code, size, etc, plus al of that sam
What is, even, this SJV fog
On a brighter note, I finally got the Tower of Hats hat!
@kviiri San Joaquin Valley presumably, cf. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tule_fog
16:55
Oh, neato
Thanks to everyone for eyes on that DitV answer yesterday btw
@kviiri trying to do whatever I can to help other RPG questions
It kinda bugs me always when questions about indie systems get obvious playing-by-the-ear answers instead of expert answers, granted this time (and probably most of the times in general?) it's just a well-meaning newcomer who doesn't really spot the tag (or understand its meaning)
@NautArch Cases like this make me respect your quality standards more and more :)
@kviiri aw shucks
17:10
A bit of vigilance is good, especially for less-played systems, eg. in yesterday's case most visitors to our site probably wouldn't know DitV, or that escalation is a specific mechanic in the game, so a question concerning it could get answers that seem good to most of our users while still being very well-detached from the game. Fixing that is a lot of responsibility for those who actually know the systems in question
A lot of games actually have these... "trap terms" that sound like they're something far more general than they actually are within the particular game
So uhhh I just created a mispelled version of the dnd-5e tag
my memory says there's garbage collection that will periodically remove unused tags
DitV has "escalation", 7th Sea 2e has "story", DnD 5e has "attack" :-)
A mechanism that could help with non-experts butting in (not that such a mechanism would ever be implemented) is making system tags ignored by default, and having people opt in to tags for systems with which they have experience. (As someone who ignores some popular tags, I can say with certainty you will still see the questions in your ignored tags, and there's clear visual signalling that it's not your place.)
@ThomasMarkov just remove it from the tagged post again; tags that are not assigned to any question are deleted routinely
(I think around once per day but I'm not sure about the period)
17:14
@ACuriousMind (and that arent synonyms I assume)
@MarkWells I know a couple people who aren’t getting their driver’s permit at 15.5 and their license at 16 cause the permit’s only valid for 6 months and that time for them is during fog season. They’re planning to get their permits in the spring before the wildfire season starts
yeah, sure, being a synonym counts as "used"
@kviiri San Joaquin valley fog. It’s painful suffering some days but it’s really pretty and cold
@Powerdork I think more clear visual indications for system tags would be great... but even at the risk of bad answers, I think the visibility for indie systems is something we shouldn't compromise
Does one do anything if a rude/abusive flag hasn't been handled in a week?
17:23
Is it still live?
@NautArch Get a mod's attention (as you just have) :P
@Someone_Evil what does aged away mean?
@NautArch They grow up so fast
That it aged away (wasn't marked helpful/declined). Taking a look at that post now
Or, just one more delete and the problem goes away on this answer.
17:28
I have noticed a sharp uptick in tech gadget advertisements since I uploaded my birthday gift cards to the site...
Thank you @Someone_Evil
Now just need to figure out what to do with this answer to BW's question
but if we have that discussion (IF!), let's have it in Dragons.
@ThomasMarkov Thoughts on the dupe status of this question?
@NautArch Give me time. I need just over 1k more to be able to vote to delete.
I have a meta discussion rel that which I think we need to have, but I need to draft it up (and get some eyes on it before posting), so it'll be some time and until then I think the whole Q&A is best left as is (and yup, anything further should be in Dragons, though much has been said already)
@JohnP Isn't deleting answers 20k?
17:45
@Medix2 Eh, I'd probably err on the side of letting a specific question stay up when the answer on the target is something like "it depends on the feature", which it seems is what we have here.
And ive probably made judgments before that contradict what I just said.
@ThomasMarkov Well, that answer is "it depends on the feature's flavor and GM call" but... yeah
Though I also like your answer @ThomasMarkov especially for booming blade XD
if you like my answer why is it at +0/-1 :P
@Someone_Evil Oh, you're right. I was thinking of questions.
Ok, so a little longer wait.
@ThomasMarkov Wow, I actually clicked the wrong one... find something to edit like adding a link or something XD
facepalm
Makes me wonder of this has happened before.
How many mistaken downvotes do I have from you? :P:P:P
17:51
@ThomasMarkov Probably not, since usually I would notice the reputation go from +10X to +10X-1
Im pretty generous with downvotes so my rep for the day is almost never a multiple of 10.
@NautArch Wow... that's pretty direct.
I mean, "don't care" is, like many bad answers, correct in principle and yet hopelessly poor in practice
That bit was bad, but there was worse in there.
Yeah
18:31
I ignored all the D&D tags. Barely any questions left :-D
To be fair, D&D is like, the most popular RPG
I realize. I'm mostly just uninterested in questions about it.
Despite the fact that I play it weekly
@RevenantBacon Fair to whom?
@Powerdork statistics?
sales?
I have friends who don't feel sales for pen and paper games are fair.
18:40
why do they feel that?
I think @RevenantBacon is making the observation that the popularity of D&D intuitively correlates with question volume on the site.
And...what's the alternative to pen and paper games?
Is this just a misunderstanding of the phrase "to be fair"?
that differentiates themselves enough to not include pen and paper in RPG sales figures?
@NautArch Chisel and tablet games.
18:41
@ThomasMarkov I'm a fan of the stylus and clay tablet
@Powerdork Fair to whom? :p
@ThomasMarkov Good old CTRPGS
Tiresome.
and playing in linear A
I'm more a fan of Chalk and Slate RPGs
18:42
@NautArch Stone character tablets make character death that much more significant. Ripping paper and smudging clay isnt near as rewarding as destroying stone.
2
@ThomasMarkov you raise a good point
@ThomasMarkov This is a reason I prefer the etched glass character sheet
ooooooh
Stat bump? Smash it and make a new one. Lose HP? Smash it and make a new one. Gain HP? Smash it and make a new one.
It gets a little expensive... to be fair.
DnD is the most popular RPG but it's also unusually fertile ground for questions of the kind our site does
18:46
@kviiri Good point. I suppose D&D has enough crunch that it fits the SE model quite well
@RyanKinal iTs aLL cRuNCh
Hurts my teeth
But yeah, more rules-light games are by definition more subjective. And more suited to something like reddit than SE
@RyanKinal experience supported answers are still available here
Good to know
So, I've had a mild obsession with the 5E Ranger and whether it should even be a class.
My current opinion is that if you want to be a Ranger, you should go Fighter/Rogue and take the Outlander background.
@RyanKinal Rules-light is somewhat subjective, but I'd say a crucial part is that a lot of more indie RPGs are more explicit about the experience they're after, which leaves room for questions
18:52
@RyanKinal D&D rangers are weird.
But they're still fun.
Really and truly, the reason 5e has the most questions because it's the most main-stream RPG, and was marketed as being incredibly newbie friendly.
@kviiri Being more explicit leaves room for questions? Or was that a typo?
@NautArch Yeah, particularly with the Tasha's optional features
@RevenantBacon "marketed as"....lies!!!
@RyanKinal ah yeah uh, I mixed it up
@RyanKinal I dunno about all that.
18:53
I mean leaves less room for questions
@kviiri I thought so. And it's a good point.
@NautArch Favored Enemy and Natural Explorer are just sooooo specific. They're all-or-nothing. Tasha's fixes that.
@RyanKinal Yeah, i think the happy medium is between ranger and revised ranger.
I think, overall, I'd prefer a non-caster Ranger. Which is why I think a Fighter/Rogue multiclass is the best way to go.
The difference between the number of new players that got started in 5e vs most other editions is staggering
@RevenantBacon getting some popular celebs really helped
18:58
And of course the popularity of Critical Role (and their decision to switch from Pathfinder)
Especially some that don't have the stereotypical look/feel of what the mainstream think we look like.
Well, what really helped was less that there were celebs playing it, and more that the image of D&D was pushed away from "something that only nerds do"
@NautArch A few months ago I got into a D&D5e campaign despite being mostly a Storyteller/GURPS/other kind of player/GM, and I do think it's more approachable than the editions I've seen before.

Q: How much information is conveyed when a spell is identified?

KirtXanathar's Guide to Everything "expands on the spellcasting rules presented in the Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide, providing...new options", including the ability to identify spells. Identifying A Spell Sometimes a character wants to identify a spell that someone else is casting or...

Q: Can a True Polymorphed character gain classes?

bowlowlSay, my human Wizard permanently True Polymorphs themself into a halfling. That halfling won't have a class, so can it, say, gain Fighter levels? What about creatures that aren't playable races, like a Beholder, or a Cat?

Morning all
Christmas is still on as planned, no delays expected
@Ben are you sure about that? We still have a few days
It’s only like the 22nd of December
23:08
@ThomasMarkov jinx
I owe Carcer a Coke.
Ooh, two answers within 17 seconds of each other. Well done!

@BardicWizard i come from the future. Just keeping an eye on things and reporting back.
Im part of an observation crew that was put together after 2012 became a serious concern, it was put into action shortly after Y2K
For safety reasons we are only allowed to observe, and only ~12hrs ahead
Just to avoid any serious paradoxes
@Ben prove it.
@Ben What day of the week will tomorrow be?
What will happen tomorrow morning, and will telling us this change anything?
Ben
Ben
The 23rd of December will fall on a Wednesday.
That checks out. Clearly he's telling the truth.
23:42
@Ben in which year? And that proves nothing
Ben
Ben
Tomorrow morning the sun will rise, it will be cold for everyone in the Northern hemisphere, and warm for everyone in the Southern hemisphere.
It also has not yet reached 2021, so it will still be 2020
I want one specific event that is measurable, such as the exact moment an earthquake will happen.
Ben
Ben
Sadly
No earthquakes to report
Nothing significant anyway
The earthquake will happen shortly before someone says "Look out! It's an earthquake!"
Ben
Ben
Something in the north pacific region, deep underwater. Minor tremor. Just normal tectonic activity.
23:45
@Ben okay, what exact moment will I wake up tomorrow morning? That would prove it
Ben
Ben
Dunno. Wasnt watching
We only keep an eye out fro significant events to give us a heads up on the apocalypse
@MikeQ in 2011 that was Tony.
Okay, in what moment will everybody in this chat agree on something totally and completely with no dissent? That’s a sign of the apocalypse
If Ben doesn't know, then it must not happen tomorrow
Ben
Ben
I mean, I am just one guy.
Im just reporting in
Then again, if you are only able to see tomorrow, then you shouldn't be able to foresee your tomorrow-self. Otherwise you would be able to see your tomorrow-self while they are seeing into 2 days from now, and so on.
Ben

Thats the system. We always observe the same point of the next day at the same time.
That way there's no overlap
If I mistime it then I have to make sure I match up that time with the next observation period. If there too much delay, then someone else has to step in.
They observe and report in my place, and so that way they don't run into themselves, since they are the temporal adjuster. Once thats fixed i then step in again to reset the cycle
At this point, I don't know if I have thought about this too much, or if my logic is just on point today lol
