@MikeQ There’s some stuff about the question in dragons already if a mod or someone wants to move this stuff there
Oh wow I'm suddenly even more tired
@Someone_Evil should probably move those last 10 or so as well
Erring on the side of all the convo being moved (so it's at least intact). Sorry for the interleaving that ends up being in Dragons
Oh, I meant from 56398730 56398818
Cuz that was still part of it
Yep, those. Thanks
I got it. The moving tools, while not too cumbersome, leave a little to be desired
Sans hat
00:15
@AncientSwordRage a cat indeed. Your cat?
@Someone_Evil clearly someone needs to start reciting the cat in the hat
@Someone_Evil so... cute..
I need to figure out how to send photos on here
I have cat as well
There should be an upload button next to "send"
Or I guess not in the mobile version
How am I supposed to get a photo on my computer though
Transfer it from some species of camera device?
...an iPad? lol
00:25
@BardicWizard yup!
Too much work tbh
Even though my cat is adorable
@AncientSwordRage it is very cute. I have no pets, alas
I have younger siblings. It’s pretty darn close to a pet
2
@BardicWizard hey! I happen to be a youngest
except those siblings are actually much nicer and less cuddly than pets
@TheDragonOfFlame I’m the oldest child. Unfortunately (i.e. I get all the expectations and such)
Though older siblings are the same
My cat is a jerk tbh
The worst part about being a youngest is now I’m an only child
(No my brother didn’t die. He is 18 and going to Rice University, though)
00:57
I'm middle child (of 4)
@BardicWizard he's VERY fluffy
Sometimes annoyingly so 😒
Lol
Cats are cute and fluffy and great but they can also definitely be annoying
01:44
@AncientSwordRage fluffy! Floofy! Fluffle-floof!
@BardicWizard these are all rejected names of his
We also call him Mr Fluffy-Pants.
02:21
Lol
02:44
Man, winter in NorCal is weird. It’s 55 degrees F (so freezing for those of us used to summer and fall), pitch black before 7pm, and people putting up holiday lights, but then there’s piles of leaves on the ground and it’s warm enough in the daytime to go outside with barely a sweater.

Q: What do I do about a prescriptive GM/player who argues that gender and sexuality aren’t personality traits?

Bardic WizardI play RPGs (usually D&D but other stuff too) every week with a group of friends who I’ve known since middle school. The group is me; Ecru, my best friend; Khaki, our usual GM; Desert, another friend; and Lemon, our resident problem. (Names changed to protect identities). All of us except for Lem...

@Adeptus no...? I didn't realise that character had a cat
04:06
@AncientSwordRage oh yeah XD I remember

Q: Why am I banned from posting?

VakkooI answered the questions and suggestions, but I am apparently not allowed to post now. Please explain. I apologise if I overstepped somewhere. I'm new to this exchange.

Q: Samurai use of two-handed weapon

user67335I found a homebrew Samurai class on dandwiki.com; which can be found at this link: https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Samurai_(5e_Class)#Fighting_Stance At the time of asking this, Earth Stance allows you to use a two-handed weapons with one hand: While you are in this stance, you have advantage on S...

05:07
@trogdor That is also my experience. Also, kittens are da bomb. But they do have one problem. They turn into cats.
Lol
I mean some cats are more manageable than kittens are
I remember as an example two cats I was taking care of, one was a kitten still and caused me all sorts of trouble
The full grown cat was completely chill and liked getting pets but didn't agitate for it

1 hour later…
06:17
(The kitten liked to try to chew on wires and also on me, and was very energetic)
06:36
@trogdor sounds like one of my siblings at age 2, except your kitten chewed wire and was energetic while my sister chewed me and my stuffed animals, and was grumpy all the time. So perhaps not so much like your kitten at all, except that both of them chewed on humans
Lol
She wasn't mine, I have taken care of a lot of cats that belonged to other people XD
Basically I have pet sat a lot
More often for cats but a fair number of times for dogs too
06:52
@trogdor lucky, I can’t even pet sit for others cause everyone in my family has some kind of allergy to fur or feathers or something so we can’t get a pet or even be too close to one for too long without sneezing
When I grow up I want to have either a llama or a sheep or some silkworms or another fiber-producing animal though
XD
I don't even know how I ended up in the position but I used to only house sit for a couple of different families that knew my parents and lived pretty close to each other
At some point I started getting asked by a lot of different people and I even had to turn some down a couple times because of conflicting times and areas
I enjoyed it a bit but I'm actually also glad I have an excuse not to do it now
Being the person everyone wants to have pet sitting was starting to get tiring

5 hours later…
11:30
@trogdor sounds rough
11:42
I've only pet sit once, but it was for a Cat named Leeloo (named after the character in 5th element) and a rabbit called Aeris (Final Fantasy)

Q: Does an arrow in an invisible creature allow you to see creature for Magic Missle attack?

TonyDnd 5e Magic Missle requires you to be able to see the target. PHB, pg 257 "Each dart hits a creature of your choice that you can see within range." Therefore you can't target an invisible creature with magic missile even if you know the spot they occupy, since you can't actually see them. But wh...

13:40
@trogdor I have a single instance of a cat that was really affectionate, almost like a dog. Belonged to my sister in law (back in the 80's / early 90's). This cat would sit on your lap and then sort of stand up, its paws on each of your shoulders and its chest pressed against yours, almost like it was hugging you. It would then usually lick one of your ears. A unique cat, to be sure. Very warm, very friendly.
@KorvinStarmast sounds like a lovely cat
@AncientSwordRage Oh, yeah, a remarkable, and memorable, creature. Made it to about 14 before my mother in law backed over him with the car. Whoops. 😮
ok, that story took a turn
sorry to hear that happened
13:58
@AncientSwordRage Oh, yeah, but living to 14 is pretty good for a cat. On the other hand, my mother in law has a gift for backing over pets. Two schanuzers and at least two cats that I know of met their end under her rear wheels ...
wow
I mean normally an animal would move out the way, so to get that many animals
We had two cats growing up, at one point, and one (named Lucky, ironically) lived to about 11 before being run over...the other to at least ~18 before being put down because of cancer
14:34
@KorvinStarmast Is it just me, or is it a common (and also kinda weird) thing for "like a dog" to be used as a description for why a cat is good?
@JohnP We haven't had any significant contact in the last year so you're probably thinking of someone else.
I just woke up and discovered the elf on the shelf had made a castle out of a mixture of dice and legos on top of my player’s handbook, sat in it, and left a note saying “Santa says be nice or you’ll be rolling 3d6 straight down for your next character”
If that doesn’t show my family’s geekiness I don’t know what does
hee.
My family, on the other hand, is the kind of geeky that means my mother always takes a moment to remember I don't mean IMB Report Program Generator.
Like, isn't the whole point of having a cat vs a dog because they behave differently?
14:54
@BardicWizard Not the worst thing :P
Even if thge campaign where we did that is currently on hiatus.
15:06
@BESW is your mom a programmer? That seems like a programmer thing to do
Not professionally, but she worked with computers in the late 70s and early 80s.
@NautArch fair. It’s in my dad’s handwriting though so I think I know who did it (although I’ve known my parents were all the mythical creatures of the night since I did chromatography tests on the notes the tooth fairy left me) and why (he warned me against it several times as “severely restricting options” in any system with ability requirements)
Any work with the university's room-sized computer meant you knew at least a little programming.
@BESW ooo i know the myth that's based on
@BardicWizard Santa took a dark turn
15:10
@BESW cool!
My parents are really good with that sitcom parent thing where they misname everything they don't understand. They call RPGs "ropecons" (after the TRPg event, no idea where they heard of that)
(She majored in math and reading education, and is a composition professor specializing in using Indigenous-grounded techniques with Asia/Pacific students for whom English is not their first language.)
Ropecon (Finnish pronunciation: [ropekon]) is a role-playing convention held annually in Finland. The convention is one of the largest non-commercial annual events of its kind, having reached a record of "over 4900" attendees in 2019. The current venue is the Messukeskus Helsinki convention centre in Helsinki, the capital city of Finland. Ropecon hosts a wide variety of different types of games, including role-playing games, live action role-playing games, collectible card games, miniature wargames and strategy games. The event also has a range of lectures, panel discussions and other presentations...
@BardicWizard It definitely changes the feel of the game, though. Have to be more careful in encounter design.
@BardicWizard Some of the answers t oyour question...woof.
@NautArch I’m avoiding mainsite till I can deal with the world — anything I should beware of?
15:20
@BardicWizard No, nothing that bad.
Just some not good.
and not unexpected
Cishet people lecturing you about good representation, mostly.
@BESW And others telling you what is(n't) fun at your table
The upvotes those answers get too makes me sad
I’m not interested in repeating the same comments about how our common experiences give us something to go on so we use certain gender- and sexuality-related terms that we actually can all use as a shorthand for certain experiences.
I may disengage for longer than I was planning to
@BardicWizard I tried pointing them back to your original question, but I'd probably recommend disengaging.
I think you've got some good answers that you may have already seen.
And leave it at that.
The Stack is not designed to cultivate an attitude of listening.
15:25
@TheDragonOfFlame Yeah, I know the event, I just wonder where they got the idea to use that as the name for the activity :D
I probably should have thought about this beforehand since lgbtq stuff is kinda a sensitive (that’s not the right word but I can’t come up with one) topic that’s bound to get comments that are just ugh.
@NautArch yeah. I have, and I think I’m gonna avoid the rest for at least a few hours
@BardicWizard Probably nothing you've not heard before. Just ignore the chaff and focus on the wheat.
@BESW you can say that again.
@BardicWizard and I shall change the subject!
We surprised the kids last night with Betta fish for Chanukkah and let them go to the store to pick which one they wanted.

The Stack is not designed to cultivate an attitude of listening.
15:27
My 7 year old daughter spent a lot of time and found one that interacted with her. She's like a freaking disney princess.
My son, on the other hand, just randomly picked one and is bummed that it mostly just hides.
We'll see if it opens up more.
@NautArch There are other options for fish, but this is a Betta choice.
@BESW hey-o!
Some rando told me to buy frozen bloodworms for their food instead of the pellets, but I think using those is above their pay grade.
I should have ignored the guy with his mask below his nose.
From a conversation earlier today, I sketched out a system for a particular kind of action movie (or basically any AAA video game): Lasers & Feelings mechanics, but your stats are Shootin' & Cussin'. When you roll exactly your number, something blows up.
@BESW that was a bad pun.
@BESW I’d play that
We also wrote a much more, ah, provocative, take on the same genres, but I'm not gonna publish it here.
15:38
@RevenantBacon not just you ... 😎
@NautArch thats not a mask, at best that's a mouth decoration
It's a chin-strap
"Exploring the struggles of Oceania with UOG's 19th issue of 'Storyboard.'" Newspaper announcement of this year's edition of a literary magazine I do the layout and design for.
@RevenantBacon one that's slipped over the mouth some how
Ursula Vernon's latest art piece (twitter link) is a character I want to write a game for. Maybe a solo game? Maybe a GMless game with a single shared character?
16:02
What’s the word for a group of Nutcrackers? Is it an army of nutcrackers?
I assume you mean the toy soldier, not the bird.
(Amusingly, a group of nutcracker birds can be called a suite.)
(Relatively obscure joke: the collective noun for nutcrackers is a Mike Henry of nutcrackers.)
@BardicWizard In all seriousness I think army is an excellent collective noun for nutcracker soldiers and I don't think there's an 'official' one and if there is who died and left somebody Collective Noun King?
@BESW yes. Or the ballet, but I think the collective noun for that is either a repertoire, a company, or a “Balanchine’s fault”
Is the collective noun for a group of ravens an Edgar Allen Poe?
Apparently its called an unkindness or a conspiracy.
@BESW thank you for that. Going to go back to arguing with my not-blood-sister and my actual sister about systems for running a nutcracker-inspired rpg game now
16:16
@ThomasMarkov I want to say I've read somewhere that many of these 'group' names aren't actually legit but are more literary?
But I also may have pulled that out of an orifice.
I just googled it and read the top infobox.
I put in exactly zero legitimate research effort, but ravens are always looking shifty, so conspiracy makes sense.
Already flagged it.
Unilaterally circumventing community review of moderation actions is not cool.
@NautArch Yeah; I was about to change my decision on that
But then realized I already bounty'd
Was coming here to ask the mods about it
@DavidCoffron Instead, I shall punish you by whipping with a wet noodle!
Take that!
but seriously, they should be able to undo the bounty.
:D
I'm not saying you were wrong to reopen it @DavidCoffron
@ThomasMarkov I get you; I didn't realize it couldn't be clsoed with a bounty
On relooking at it, it could be seen as a duplicate; mostly I wanted to put the bounty so that people could discuss if its a duplicate, and reclose after that. I should've raised a meta instead
16:40
@DavidCoffron And OP has been back and didn't raise a comment about wanting it reopened.
not that that is definitive
@NautArch Well, I was going to ask the question myself before I found the other
After reviewing, it looks like a dupe to me, but bountying the dupe target is a good idea.
@NautArch That is an interaction I was unaware of.
I think it's a dupe, and like the bounty as well.
@NautArch Agreed at this astage; I reopened to hastily
16:41
I also agre with it being a dupe
I just think the answer is not sufficient on the dupe target
you can probably flag it and ask the mods to remove the bounty
@DavidCoffron 100% agree
I think that the dupe target is sufficient for an answer. "If you get a reroll, you only reroll 1 die"
@NautArch Done. Sorry guys!
@DavidCoffron thwack goes the noodle
16:47
@RevenantBacon But the language of the PHB says "[if something] lets you reroll the d20. you can reroll only one of the dice." Some features don't use that language like the Lucky trait of halflings does ("When you roll a 1 on the d20 for an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you can reroll the die"). Some features use different language such as "reroll the saving throw"
And what die do saving throws use?
@RevenantBacon well if you have advantage it isn't 1 d20
the feature is letting you reroll the whole sequence.
The die used is a d20
Maybe
Idk; that's why I bountied
I don't think that it lets you rereoll both dice. The intent is pretty clear
16:49
@RevenantBacon I dispute that the intent is clear
But the RAW might be in agreement with you
I see it as largely ambiguous and would like to see further arguments one way or the other
I think the answer that is there is the right ruling, but the reasoning could be better.
Thanks @Someone_Evil ! Sorry again
Might throw one on there sometime if no one answers with my argument.
@DavidCoffron No worries :)
I just didn't want it to look like I was doing some kind of hard override

1 hour later…
18:25
Took a little break. now I back
@goodguy5 nice job reaching out to Kobold Press
thanks ^_^
You wanna reach out to Crawford about fighters taking Weapon Master?
nah, I'm good.
@ThomasMarkov Is there a question around that somewhere?
I found it
@ThomasMarkov Ooh! was there an answer with primary source that I need to see?
18:32
@DavidCoffron I was referring to goodguy's answer here
@goodguy5 It's my second highest scoring question lol
Aside from how useless Weapon Master is, I'd probably be inclined to either not limit it to simple/martial weapons or to expand it to all simple martial weapons.
@ThomasMarkov Yeah; such a ridiculous oversight which makes me sad.
18:48
@Someone_Evil
One day I'll figure out my audio settings so I don't jump out of my seat at unexpected pings
What's up?
Was it that ^? :)
End of year career review submitted
finally
I always forget that Naut can do that.
18:51
@AncientSwordRage yay for you!
@BardicWizard thanks!
@Someone_Evil I accidentally reposted a deleted comment on this answer, but I'm a bit confused about the situation. Was the comment deleted by the answer author? (I'm not sure if high rep users can delete comments on their answers.) Is it possible for me to tell if an author deleted my comment, and therefore considered my comment and decided not to implement it, or a moderator did?
Only you and moderators can delete your comments.
this year was stressful (but not like it wasn't for anyone else) but I wanted to at least make my progress look not-awful🙃
@Vaelus I deleted it following a NLN flag from the author. No worries, it's just we sometimes get slightly over-persistent commenters and we're getting enough flags on that Q&A already :p
@ThomasMarkov Comments can also be deleted via flags. Down to one flag depending on certain, secret heuristics
18:55
Right.
@Someone_Evil sorry! Might not have been the best q to put on mainsite
@BardicWizard Definitely not your fault
@BardicWizard It's a great question.
@Someone_Evil Okay, then I that case it seems like the answer is violating the "No name calling or personal attacks" part of the CoC. Am I misinterpreting the CoC? If I'm interpreting the CoC correctly, would it be appropriate for me to flag an answer that decides not to remove personal attacks like this one, or should I take no action?
@Vaelus I flagged it.
That said, if you feel that an answer is "rude or abusive", you should always feel free to flag it so.
19:40
Worst case scenario, someone reviews the flag, and determines that it's not a problem.
And then you bug the mods like "why was my flag declined???"
Which btw, shout out to @Rubiksmoose, one time I flagged something and they reached out to ask me about the flag before declining it.
20:07
@ThomasMarkov It's riddiculous how active you are on here
@RevenantBacon what metric are you going by? :P
A couple
First, we've been active for roughly the same time frame (about 9 months) and you have just over 6x my rep score, second, you're top .03% for the year, third, you respond to most 5e questions within about a half-hour of them coming up (that last one may be an exaggeration).
It's probably not an exaggeration.
I've got about 25% of all of the enlightened badges that have been handed out since June.
Also, if you look at your rep line on your activity page, it's almost perfectly straight lol
20:19
@RevenantBacon If it werent for the rep cap my rep would be over 50k
@ThomasMarkov Oof
boo, can't seem to find a digital photo frame that will connect to lighroom catalogs
20:36
Close votes on this one are misguided. There are sufficient contextual clues to identify edition.
@KorvinStarmast Theyre only misguided insofar as the policy is misguided.
@ThomasMarkov The policy is an ass.
And yet unambiguous in this situation.
21:00
Is it though? It's clearly identifiable as a 5e question, and per your meta post, our focus should really be on helping people, rather than pedantically requiring adding a system tag (which they may not even know how to do)
@RevenantBacon Nope, my meta post concerns questions where "5e" appears in the title or body.
But the sentiment that our focus should be on helping still holds true outside of that circumstance
As I noted in a comment there, Im generally in favor of the dont guess policy, I just find the "5e" situation to be a favorable compromise.
Well, as I'm sure you all know by now, I'm not exactly in favor of that policy as a whole
@RevenantBacon go review the suggested edit on that question lol
21:07
LMAO, I didn't even notice the [feats] tag
haha me neither
sort of interesting thing. I took a Meyers Briggs test and got INFP, then took one for my main campaign character and got ENFP. The weird thing is the only difference is my character is extraverted while I am intreverted. So basically my character is me, but not shy. Because when I am pretending to be someone it is way easier to not be shy
I guess
But my character still seems very different from me
21:23
@AncientSwordRage only because I'm bad at saying no to someone who needs help (especially if it also involves an animal who needs help too XD)
@TheDragonOfFlame no they're compete opposites
@AncientSwordRage oh?
@KorvinStarmast my cat is pretty affectionate honestly, so much so it's a little annoying sometimes (she will walk into the room I'm in and meow at me extremely loudly to get me to pay attention to her)
In infp the p is your internal sensing thingy
In enfp p is your external thingy, but j is the internal one
Its something like that which means being one letter off can through the whole type off
@TheDragonOfFlame I have actually found this to be the case as well
21:26
@AncientSwordRage wait what why
Although I also end up still playing quiet characters a lot too
Although it's possible that the test you took didn't know that, because mbti isn't great
@TheDragonOfFlame this is a good summary of MBTI
the big five and/or MTG color pie does a better job in my experience
@AncientSwordRage XD
all I know is it was spooky accurate about me
also for kicks I took it on 3 sites and got the same
@TheDragonOfFlame that definitely possible without actually saying anything
I do think MBTI can be vaguely accurate and descriptive, but a lot of its usefulness is obscured by the fact its aimed at selling tests to businesses
Its constructed in a very appealing way
The big five is more accurate but not as marketable
I used to be into it big time, but I ended up seeing the flaws eventually
21:44
My MB type is YMMV
4
22:15
@AncientSwordRage Big Five has the smell of research psychologists all over it. I like MB (and MTG color pie :) ) because it's unabashedly Jungian: it tells you what your symbol is.
22:25
@MarkWells I think it's too marred by how it was made marketable... And I'm pretty sure that's how Big Five is supposed to smell... 😝
Aight, I’m driving to Tennessee tonight. Probably won’t be around much this weekend. Stay cool, you beautiful people.
@ThomasMarkov good luck, and have fun!
23:02
Watch out for bears
@AncientSwordRage what is the big 5?
nevermnd
@TheDragonOfFlame did you Google it?
I did yes lol
@ThomasMarkov ciao for niao
23:20
I want a character named Finn McCool.
