@NautArch What about that rewording: "change the implementation of game..."

@DavidCoffron or "Allowing this to act like an improvised weapon opens up more mechanics than the spell accounts for and a DM will need to consider how that may impact the other aspects of the game."

@NautArch I like that better

Q: Handling a player (unintentionally) stealing the spotlight

user3399Quite recently, I replaced a friend as DM for a D&D game. During that game, I came across something I did not expect: One of the players was just too good. When I am saying "too good" I am not talking about his character being overpowered, but the player himself having the time of his life rolep...

@DavidCoffron yay teamwork!

6:24 PM
@NautArch drive.google.com/file/d/1he593Jp3H-5ffEKUGilVZI5f8gyKV-m2/view I found a more up to date version of soul binder it removes soul points and gives you uses equal to your proficiency modifier among other things sorry to bother you but do you mind checking too see if it fixed any of your complaints?

@MageintheBarrel Dood. I'm gonna have to decline. I really don't think you should be pursuing homebrew.

worth a shot

@MageintheBarrel Dude, it's 34 pages. None of the standard classes are anywhere close to that level of complexity.

that's cause theres like 10 subclasses
11 if i counted right

If you're a new player with a new DM, that's an unreasonable amount of stuff to expect them to consider

6:33 PM
Even at 25 pages (class, subclasses and spell list) that's a lot.

they'd only consider 1 subclass tho which would mean they'd only have to consider 8 pages actually

8 pages is still more than the entire wizard class, I'm pretty sure.

That's still longer than any of the other classes

that's including magic items

Right, because other classes don't have their own lists of magic items. They do have spells, and I suppose you have to consider the spell list part of the class

6:37 PM
@MageintheBarrel What do you think? Do you think it's balanced? Why/why not? If you can't answer that question it's unlikely your DM will, either.

On the other hand, there's a good chance the DM has already read the spells for the standard classes

In short the "vanilla" classes has none or very few specific magic items, because 5e isn't designed around players choosing magic items

@MarkWells except that the DM is a new DM. THey've played, but it's unclear how much or how comfortable they are in their knowledge.

since I don't really care about the magic items and the subclass I want is 1 page the first page is basic class stuff like profiencies and tables making the rest of the class features take up 3 and half of 1 of those is basic spellcasting info like ability score, the spell list is 1 page the new spells are 1 page that's be 5.5 pages

Right, my point is that if they've had the PHB for a while, they might at least have looked at the paladin spells, but there's zero chance they've ever seen any of this before. Handing them 34 pages of reading homework and saying "I can use all of this, right?" is unfair to them.

6:43 PM
again it's not 34 pages because 28.5 of that is irrelevant
to what i'm trying to accomplish
the last 5 pages are changelog credits design notes and the gm binder logo
if it wasn't for the large amounts of fluff it would be notably shorter as well

@MageintheBarrel I can tell just from the first few pages that this homebrew is trying to give too many features too quickly. First thing I'd do when suggesting revisions is nix the spellcasting, OR nix the Hidden Form and Soul Linked Casting features—or at least push them back until later in the class progression.
The thing with Half Spellcasters is that they usually gain additional features as they level—more than Wizards, as an example—to compensate for the spellcasting they're not receiving.
But this is too far.

i'm fine with nixing spellcasting
and having my summon be the main source of damage

And it's occurring at the same levels that they're gaining spellcasting features as well. Like, at level 5, you're gaining one-of-two features affecting your Attack, AND 2nd level spells, AND Soul Linked Casting.
It's not even necessarily a balancing issue; I don't think these things make the class OP, it just makes it too kludgy.

@MageintheBarrel If you're going to ask the community for help, you really should listen to feedback. Pushing back again and again doesn't help your cause, but it does make me wonder if you've gotten acceptance at your table by using the same strategy. I know you really want to make your idea work, but this isn't the best way to do it.

See also gaining a companion at level 1, AND gaining the ability to merge Magic Items with it. Again: not OP, just too complex.

6:52 PM
@Xirema I do wonder why every attempt at a summoner class I've seen has spellcasting.

no i haven't done so at my table at all i've even offered compromises

@Yuuki I mean, summoning does seem like spellcasting.

The levels after 7 are a lot more reasonable by comparison, but I haven't looked at the archetype features yet.

i wasn't aware that i was pushing back excessivly besides it being to long

I'm really sad that 5e nerfed summoning spells so hard (by way of making them occur later)

I wanted this character build that was a wizard with 8 int that summoned things

6:54 PM
@goodguy5 Or that the DM technically gets to choose.

1. that's not that bad for that particular character type.

"My friends protec"

2. that's the dumbest darned ruling I've seen in 5e, I think.

@goodguy5 Completely!

I honestly think I'd quit a table where the DM ruled that way outside of AL, and maybe even then.

Let me cast the school spell. I want to conjure X. No, you don't get to choose. Why? I'm conjuring them!
@goodguy5 Although in some cases, I'd see why not. Some combos are kinda bonkers for the spell level.

anyways how would i balance this

6:56 PM
@MageintheBarrel We've all told you that we don't like it, I think you're going to have a hard time getting that question answered.

@MageintheBarrel With another homebrew class on the other side of the lever.
Has to be equal in page length unless you want to mess around with the position of the fulcrum.

GcL
@MageintheBarrel The "new_final" version. just wait for "new_final2"

@MageintheBarrel I have some concrete suggestions I'd start with, then work from there.

@GcL "final_final3"

@GcL new_final_final

6:58 PM
@goodguy5 new_final_final_nautarchedit

i'm fine with removing spell casting and that magic item absorption

btw, I do datestamps when I edit my resume.

goodresume520190624

@NautArch new_final_final_nautarchedit(2)

GcL
@MageintheBarrel Fundamentally, that homebrew is going to have problems because it breaks the action economy. It's very nearly controlling two characters in combat.

@goodguy5 Use version control for your resume so you have a commit history.

6:59 PM
I actually really don't like git......
which is funny, as a programmer.

so if i have to choose between ordering my summon with my own action or acting myself?

GcL
The 10th level reaction options are particularly breaking. It steps on a bunch of other classes and provides free attacks, but not as opportunity.

@goodguy5 git or version control in general?

@G.Moylan specifically git
I think it's because I cut my teeth on svn and subclipse and tortoise.

GcL
@MageintheBarrel Now you're a ranger. Which would probably be fine. Either you use your actions for you, or the actions for the summon, but never both. Then you only have to deal with the expanded reactions list... and trimming that down to balanced.

7:00 PM
@goodguy5 if you integrate it into something like Visual Studio it isn't so bad. Working in Git GUI or bash is torture, though

GcL
gotta run to a meeting. back later

@G.Moylan I'm flad someone else thinks so

@goodguy5 I dread when I have to go into bash and undo a commit or something. I always have to look it up. the syntax makes little sense. the commands have esoteric names. Not fun.
@G.Moylan I much prefer clicking "commit" in Visual Studio

I prefer right clicking and selecting "commit", but w/e

Git Extensions makes things easier.

7:02 PM
hows this for changes
remove spell casting
the only level 10 reaction is redirection
you cannot shrink your partner only store it
you or you summon acts not both

Although I still muck about in Git Bash for certain things like stashing.

@Yuuki bash has its place but it's still a special kind of hell

The first few times at my first "bigboy" job, I used "commit overwrite override".
I was always super careful that no one had checked anything in, but it was pretty stressful.

Then I managed to nonchalantly bring it up to someone and they explained that we shouldn't do that.
whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

I live in Bash 90% of the time.... or I did until we migrated platforms.
I've got a whole bashrc that I've been cultivating for years.

Honestly, I'm glad that my first proper job didn't have anything complicated version control-wise.

TFS was what my first one used. But I think that runs git underneath

7:05 PM
Single branch, features were generally worked on by yourself, features merged back into master. Also single team so no team branches.

this job I had the freedom to setup what I want, so I setup git via bitbucket
and using VS now I just click buttons. I rarely have to use bash. when I do it's because something went wrong

Gerrit for code/feature review.
Basically, your code is always only one commit ahead of master, that commit being whatever feature or bugfix you're working on.

@Yuuki seems convenient. When I have a ticket blocked for too long it's always a pain to go back in and merge from develop and deal with 15 new commits
@Yuuki that does seem a bit risky. Having a separated Dev and Master is definitely something I can appreciate

Well, our product's a code library not an application.
So features are either finished and packaged into the next release or they're bugfixes that need to be released immediately.

ah that makes sense
I customize a 3rd-party application with feature requests or plugins.

7:13 PM
can I get some eyes on that regrowing body parts question?

I think it's a dupe.

@goodguy5 Just wait a few minutes and I'm sure some will show up.

@goodguy5 I'm still shocked by "I did this to my player without really considering the implications...bow do I fix it?"

is the artficer homebrew?

@MageintheBarrel The artificer is UA

7:17 PM
ua is a homebrew subreddit right?

@MageintheBarrel There is a 5e Artificer that is UA; playtest material. Which is close, but not quite homebrew.

@G.Moylan there are homebrew versions of it from before the UA, but "The Artificer" is WotC UA

so do you think that would be balanced enough for a novice

@MageintheBarrel there is a subreddit named that but actual "Unearthed Arcana" is playtest material that WotC publishes

The ARtificer specializes in fancy glasses that make you see things that aren't there.

7:18 PM
@Yuuki pint glasses, to be specific

@MageintheBarrel Speaking as someone currently running a novice through the first few levels of an Artificer, I can contend that the class is quite difficult to learn for a newer player.
There's a lot of moving parts that interact in unexpected ways.
For someone used to playing a spellcaster a lot of it is old hat; but there are certain design decisions you take for granted that creep up on newer players.

what about beastmaster ranger?
making the beast into humaniod creature instead
since that's mainly what i'm looking for
a companion class with a humaniod partner

@MageintheBarrel Far simpler, I recommend going Revised Ranger instead (or replacing the Beast Master archetype with the Beast Conclave archetype instead). Dunno about turning the beast humanoid, you'd have to take that up with your DM.

as long as it accomplishes that I'm cool with pretty much anything

Oof, the more I look at that Soulbinder class, the more Not Good™ it gets.
Like, the Design Kludge issues stand out right away, but brushing past that, it's just way too powerful.

7:32 PM
@MageintheBarrel that was my suggestion yesterday.

@MageintheBarrel How important is that the companion mechanically behaves like a humanoid (charm, divination, etc.)?

Note that there's a difference between mechanical behavior and narrative behavior.

I want it to be like that noble feature but they can actually fight

So the mechanical behavior is not important at all then. Because that's narrative not mechanics.

7:34 PM
the idea is that they can do servant things like cooking cleaning and other servant stuff
but can also fight like a companion

@MageintheBarrel That's all flavor and narrative and not mechanics.

then it should be fine
so then beast conclave ranger?
the question is if it dies how do I get it back

Yeah, I'd suggest talking to your DM about rolling a Ranger and just describing your companion as a humanoid but it would still be an animal for the under-the-skin mechanics.
For Revised Ranger,
> "If your animal companion is ever slain, the magical bond you share allows you to return it to life. With 8 hours of work and the expenditure of 25 gp worth of rare herbs and fine food, you call forth your companion’s spirit and use your magic to create a new body for it. You can return an animal companion to life in this manner even if you do not possess any part of its body.

If you use this ability to return a former animal companion to life while you have a current animal companion, your current companion leaves you and is replaced by the restored companion."

narrative is going to matter since or table is very rp focused

For PHB Ranger, I think it's Raise Dead.

7:41 PM
yeah I saw that but I want to know how I can narratively explain how that would work for a humaniod

@MageintheBarrel special bs amulet that has been handed down between families for generations?
or some similarly bs "only I can bring only you back to life in this way"

so i have some sort of eternal servant that can be revived only through a weird ritual?

sure, that's basically the situation anyway, but with a beast

@goodguy5 "This weird servant resurrection ritual has been passed down the Armstrong family line for GENERATIONS!"

7:45 PM
@Yuuki [Sparkly flexing]

to bad there's no two handed option
i just love greatswords

But yeah, there's a lot of stuff in D&D that you can just re-skin instead of trying to find some homebrew.

yeah i think i'll go with reskin
what should I name her?
hows Ophelia sound?
very elegant and I'm rather fond of shakespears tragedies

@MageintheBarrel Ophelia? I 'ardly know ya!

does 5e have a wealth by level chart somewhere? or is it a wealth by tier chart?

7:52 PM
Client support : "We are getting complaints that the server response is slow"
Me : "It's server 2003, they are lucky it's still alive"

found it.

@MageintheBarrel The simple option is simply to agree it doesn't die.

so if it takes lethal damage it get's whisked away elsewhere

I was thinking more along the lines of your servant being seriously wounded and barely clinging to life, incapacitated and unconscious

@Rubiksmoose that's exactly where my mind went

8:00 PM
if it could only get ko'd then i could just heal it indefinetely
well have a party member do that

@MageintheBarrel I mean, you could use the equivalent rules for animal companions (who can likewise be recalled indefinitely)

@MageintheBarrel It would still follow the mechanical requirements of the class. You're just refluffing the narrative around it. But you wouldn't be able to 'heal' it with a goodberry and bring it back. You'd need to wait the time and spend the money.

We're talking about serious injuries you can't just Healing Word yourself out of! You need 8 hours of rest and 25 gp worth of medicine :-)

that would mean i'd have to carry the half dead body of my servant
unlike the animal companion
which gets a new body

Yes, that's a difference between the two. Does it matter much to you?

8:04 PM
@MageintheBarrel Then go with the original tragedarian, Sophocles.
Or Euripedes, or Aeschylus

@MageintheBarrel Or it returns to a pocket dimension where it heals when you spend the time/money.

how about if it takes lethal damage the original body disintegrates and I have to spend money and reagants to formulate a new one for it?

@NautArch WHY DID YOU GET DOWNVOTED?!

having it go to a pocket dimesion would imply I can stuff it in there any time

@goodguy5 Maybe because of my statement about the dm?

Q: Is it possible for Leomund's Tiny Hut to be lifted?

ConfusedDMI've been trying to come up with creative ways to get around Leomund's Tiny Hut and another idea recently came to me. When I first started, I had looked into burrowing creatures that would penetrate the hut from beneath. There is however this topic that really makes sense with the Hut having a ...

@NautArch I know of no sport where the players can criticize the refs.

@NautArch don't worry. I gotcha, boo

crap
rip boiz

But it uses github public available, so it'll be insane.

8:12 PM
@goodguy5 heh. I'm okay with downvotes ;)

something i noticed is it doesn't state the companions stat block

@MageintheBarrel Why would you think that? See this question
@MageintheBarrel This fluff is just as good. Whatever works for you that doesn't create new mechanical possibilities.
@MageintheBarrel It depends on the beast. So you'd choose the beast and then refluff it for a humanoidish creature.

i don't see anything about being able to store it in a pocket dimension in the class descrition

@MageintheBarrel I didn't say store. I said when it does it disappears and that's how you recall it.
It's just fluff, it really doesn't matter. It can be what you came up with just as easily.

so i usae the rangers companion rules?
in rhb

8:15 PM
Yes. No. Depends.

Revised Ranger should have companion rules, IIRC.

Animal Companion
At 3rd level, you learn to use your magic to
create a powerful bond with a creature of the
natural world.
With 8 hours of work and the expenditure of
50 gp worth of rare herbs and fine food, you call
forth an animal from the wilderness to serve as
your faithful companion. You normally select
you companion from among the following
animals: an ape, a black bear, a boar, a giant
badger, a giant weasel, a mule, a panther, or a
wolf. However, your DM might pick one of these
animals for you, based on the surrounding
doesn't state the stat block cr or size limitations

@MageintheBarrel You'd be using the Revised Ranger Beast Conclave.

yeah and i just copy pasted that from said pdf

8:18 PM
Keep this bookmarked, too.

I suppose it would be a problem that you don't get access to the class feature until 3.

maybe it's something my parents gave me and I don't really understand how to use it until then
i would prefer it to be level 1
or I could just have her as a regular npc companion till level 3
and she doesn't gain any fighting prowes until then

@Yuuki A lot of big class features don't turn on until level 3. That's not uncommon.
@MageintheBarrel Or you're waiting for her to get there. And lo and behold, at level 3 she shows up!@

i'll ask my dm if I can gain her as a non-combat companion that's a retainer type until i get to level 3
like the people from the noble background

Honestly this sounds like it could be reskinned to be an Igor ala Discworld. (but I haven't been following closely)

8:25 PM
@MageintheBarrel Have you taken the Noble background? That would be a good use of it rather than giving you an extra background feature. If you get one, then other players should be able to pick an extra feature.

we've been bonding until level 3 and by then we become an inseparable pair
yeah i plan to

8:37 PM
I'm exhausted...

A: Is there a canonical choice for multiclassing with the aim of optimizing an Arcane Trickster for melee?

David CoffronThe best choice depends on the situation. Unfortunately there is no clear winner, so you'll have to weigh the pros and cons. I only included dips (when you pick up a few levels in a class, this is in contrast to builds that split more evenly) and only dual-class multiclassing. It is possible tha...

... canonical?

@Yuuki Idk. I tried to just provide a helpful answer

@DavidCoffron I just came here to tell you that that was an incredibly detailed answer.

@Rubiksmoose Thanks! I came here to get recognition (to be honest), so I guess it worked

8:41 PM
Oh, it's definitely a great answer, I'm just confused by the asker's word choice.

@DavidCoffron yer gonna kick yourself when they come back and say the campaign ends at level 8 :P

@NautArch ...

Canon either refers to the Bible (which if the Bible has 5e charop suggestions, I need to go back to Sunday school) or official works by the original author.

@NautArch My campaign ends at level 2.

"And lo on the third day, He proposed that you take Colorful Spray because that is seriously OP for a 1st-level spell."

8:46 PM
@Yuuki Well, it's got the Giant Slayer and Prophet prestige classes

@Yuuki Or "a large, heavy piece of artillery, typically mounted on wheels, formerly used in warfare."

@Yuuki Man! Why did I not take that!

@DavidCoffron If you add the extra "n", sure. :p

@Yuuki Not to mention you can just have your party close their eyes and it doesn't affect them (unlike what you can do with sleep)
And well... 1 round of blind is good, but I'm not sure it's that good. The enemies still can try to hit y'all, and you probably will only affect a few enemies

@DavidCoffron that makes me feel better - although closing their eyes for the round you cast it is effectively blinding them, too.
I did use sleep though, and it's won the first couple of encounters.
But we're level 3 now and it's waning in ability. Will find out tomorrow night if I have another opportunity as we have to get into an orc stronghold to rescue some folks. Good thing our bard tripped the alarm the previous night and it's now more heavily guarded.
And by tripped the alarm, I mean he cast dancing lights on the bridge to the stronghold and that freaked them out enough to call in for help.

8:52 PM
@JohnP Don't forget the incredible new spells it offers. advanced control water, cure anomaly, ... I thought their would be more, but I think this is it for magic effects the bible describes that can't be explained by 5e spells
@NautArch Sleep is definitely one I've traded in very quickly in many campaigns
(As a bard or sorcerer, as a wizard I just stop preparing it)

@DavidCoffron For right now, I can keep it. Next level and/or if I get any scrolls to add to my spellbook i'll reconsider.

@DavidCoffron raise self, speak through plants, flood material plan, cast down
and whatever you'd call it when the army tromped around and Jericho fell

@DavidCoffron I also rolled a 20 and 1 for my Portents :D

@JohnP Is it raise self or did God raise Jesus? flood material plane is a good one xD. Didn't think about the burning bush. That's a good one. Cast down?
@NautArch That is the best
disintegrate city

@DavidCoffron Couldn't believe it :) Got new dice for the wizard and they're the Runic dice from Q workshop ('cause divination and runes seemed appropriate.) Had been using them for the whole session and then we had a long rest. Rolled the 2d20 for the portent and that came up. BOOYA.

8:57 PM
@Yuuki Technically both of those definitions are too broad. "Canon" in its strict sense is officially sanctioned or approved entries in a multipart work.

But honestly, I'd almost rather have normal rolls. Now I need to stay near the paladin :D

HMM... conjure crystal sphere? (for Genesis)

@DavidCoffron Turn to Salt

For example, Doctor Who has no canon because the BBC has never made any official statements of official approval about any of the episodes, films, books, radio plays, comics, etc. It DOES have one webisode series that is non-canon, however, because the BBC made a proclamation about that.
Similarly there are many books which are Biblical but are not canonical because they were thrown out by various councils.

@BESW I mean the bible is canonized so that definition may just be a specific example.

9:00 PM
@DavidCoffron Technically that's what God did to Lucifer, the whole "Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven" thing.

@JohnP Yeah. That is definitely a new effect, as it (I suppose) would change his origin plane. (For the purposes of spells like banishment)

@DavidCoffron Is there a "prophecy" spell in 5e?

(Since Jesus banishes Satan to his domain which I assume didn't send him to heaven)

@DavidCoffron There's the lay definition of "stuff we think of as actually happening in a franchise," but without a sense of "officially sanctioned" rather than "created by the author(s)" or "accepted by the audience," we couldn't have Star Wars Legends.

@DavidCoffron Correct. Lucifer, the Daystar, whatever you want to call him started as one of the angels in (presumably) the celestial plane.
@DavidCoffron That might fit...
Ooh! summon horsemen
Of course, to do that, you'd need the artifact Gabriel's Horn

9:05 PM
@JohnP Maybe divination is closer (although less precise and more limited in time frame)
@JohnP Oh wait. Revelation has a lot of new spells in it

@DavidCoffron Revelations is the Unearthed Arcana of the Bible :p

@JohnP Truth
It is what might be (but probably in a different form)

@DavidCoffron It's one of my two books in the Bible.

@JohnP My favorite one to read is Exodus. My favorite one for its content is Songs. My favorite one to quote is Romans

@DavidCoffron It's been so long I don't remember many quotes.

9:11 PM
@JohnP Honestly I don't either. I just know almost all my old favorites were in Romans

Romans and Psalms are both good for quotes.
Heh, if you want to be really irreverent, you could have the spell testify, with the requirement that it must be shouted by the entire party in unison

@JohnP An evil campaign could actually benefit from a few spells. Summon plague

@DavidCoffron mark of the beast

Create famine

Wander lost

9:16 PM
seal of God (or seal of divinity for a nonspecific one)
preserve in whale xD

@DavidCoffron nice x)

Some extra options for ceremony all over the place

whups. Gotta head home and watch the kids. might be on later.

Cheers

Just read about this Kickstarter campaign: kickstarter.com/projects/bouncyrock/talespire
Looks like a souped up Roll20. Not sure how it will work - do players all login to Talespire on a server maintained by Bouncyrock?

Kickstarter: Quietus is a one-shot, no prep RPG of melancholy horror, inspired by tragic horror films like Oculus, The Strangers and Don't Look Now.

hey there @JohnP, how're things going?
hey as well @RobertF, welcome to the RPG.SE lair :)

Hey Shalvenay!

@BESW huh, interesting

[wave] Hey, Robert, what's new?
@trogdor I know, it's a not-Cthulhu horror game!
Are you interested?

11:59 PM
I mean it's possibly the only example I've seen? So yes
