12:01 AM
3 hours ago, by Yuuki
@Ben It's all a red herring and The Rise of Starwalker is the story of Kylo Ren opening a bakery.

Ben
Well, you know, the entire series has been about "good and evil", Light and dark". Rei is new. She's in a morally ambiguous situation where she's received guidance from both sides, she's experienced the power of both sides, and has come out as "the good guy" only because she did a really cool thing to save the actual good guys, and is friends with Chewie. But she doesn't dislike KR either - she just doesn't wanna run an empire... too much work.

It's a double-entendre about his meteoric rise as a small business owner and yeast.
That's how rom-com titles work. It's like a law of the universe.

Ben
@Yuuki Sorry... not run an empire... run a business. Her experience on Jakku with trading has left a sour taste in her mouth

@Ben And we're not talking about the quarter rations.

user15026
@Yuuki wonders about possible cupcake flavours

12:06 AM
@Ash Strawberry Familial Betrayal. Sorry, he's still a little sore about the past.

@Ash One for each themed terrarium planet; jungle, lava, sand, sea, more sand, and casino

Q: Should I discuss the type of campaign with my players?

Jorge CórdobaThe campaign I’m preparing is designed to give the illusion of choice via side quests and an open world (not really open), but with a main story line that will be pushed into them sooner or later. The campaign is structured in acts and areas, with each area acting as a sandbox space you can’t rea...

@MikeQ Don't forget "ice-but-actually-it's-just-a-nifty-reference-to-Hoth-salt".

Mmmm... salt-flavored cupcakes

user15026
You could maybe do something with a salted caramel or something there

12:11 AM
@Ash Perhaps, but not if I want to subvert the audience's expectations

@Ben Have to disagree that this series is about "good and evil" it's about Skywalker family drama and it always has been. Could have called it "keeping up with the skywalkers" without changing a thing.

Ben
Well, yeah. Underlying themes. :P

The pitch for star wars could be: "Let's make a dysfunction family drama. there's heaps of those already Ok we'll make it different, give them laser swords, magic powers and set it in space. ummm.... Oh! And the fate of the entire universe rests on their shoulders..."

Welp, now it's the final season of Steven Universe.

@Ash the Dark side is just really dark chocolate

12:27 AM
@trogdor The dark side do have cookies afterall

Maybe chocolate chips in there
It's always better with chocolate chips
@linksassin everyone has cookies they were inside us all along (eewww I don't want those cookies)

Ben
@trogdor Those are actually macadamia nuts. Surprise.

@Ben no that's the Snoke flavor, because Surprise
I don't want to make anymore flavors because they just start getting depressing
Like the I killed my dad flavor
Or the I'm still a whiney child flavor

Ben
@trogdor There's a theory he didn't

Or the no one loves me Flavor
Because Kylo is actually kinda depressing if he isn't hilarious

Ben
12:33 AM
I think most of those fall under the "salt-flavoured" category
There does need to be a "wall-eyed-nipples" one in there somewhere

What do you put in your "poe and finn are a couple" flavour?

Ben
@linksassin Love

@linksassin chocolate and vanilla?
And strawberries I guess
That one actually sounds good right now
Maybe put an actual strawberry in cut into a heart shape

Ben
@trogdor Are we talking anatomically correct... or?

Or put it on top I guess
@Ben no that's silly, that's for the I killed my dad one
And it got depressing again because you made me make that pun

12:46 AM
I feel like you could replace "I killed my dad" with a more generic "daddy issues over an immense drop" to be more inclusive

I don't think you should include anything to do with that if any of your goals is inclusivity
XD

I meant more inclusive of different generations of fans. That scene exists in all 3 trilogies

Ben
"My dad never existed"
"My dad doesn't want me to follow my own path"
"My dad is the reason why I'm not the main character of this series"

Obi-wan: Watches his father figure get killed, nearly falls down really big shaft
Luke: I am your father, falls down really big shaft
Ben: I have to kill my father, Han falls down really big shaft

@linksassin ooooh
Yeah that's true
But in the context of Kylo Ren opening the shop I didn't see what you meant

12:55 AM
"Light speed through a star destroyer" is my favorite dish.

Ooh that one has dragon fruit in it
XD
Chewbacca flavor has extremely chewy caramel in it

"It's a trap" lemon tarts that are super sour. You were warned.

Lol

user15026
1:11 AM
@trogdor Agreed.

user15026
Now I want cupcakes.

Same
I want too many
Probably not a healthy amount anyway

user15026
Saaame but if we went halfsies then we'd have maybe a healthier amount of cupcakes?

@BESW What's Your Excuse? When you Succeed with Style on a Will defense against someone's attempt to Create an Advantage on you, you can apply it to them with two free invokes, if it would be appropriate.

1:19 AM
@Ash that's a very good idea XD

user15026
I have those sometimes, especially when it means maximizing cake enjoyment

Ben
My problem is carbs.
Such savoury goodness

@Glazius Nice.

RL is the enemy of D&D campaigns. One of the three campaigns I am in have gone dormant. A second is slowing down.

Agh! Life! The bane of fun!
(Also the quote of the Lich Association)

1:27 AM
@Ben did you want more input on those three items?
Diablo/Corruption

Ben
At this point I'm back at the drawing board. The Madness/Corruption "pyramids", based on the "resist/embrace influence" system that @BESW suggested.
I was thinking I wanted to try and stick with 3 variations of each, but I'm having issues breaking up the "madness" subtypes

My idea for items is end game, when the stone goes into one forehead.
No need to make them an NPC.

@Ben My suggestion: stop thinking of it as madness.

Ben
At this point I'm not really seeing a game past that point?
@BESW I'm very much open to suggestions lol

Madness is an outdated, inaccurate, and cruel way to frame the mental consequences of horror as typically depicted in media.

1:32 AM
With these items, you leave that open to "it can have a follow up" or "and this is the end, beautiful friend ...."
Just like Blizzard did ... leave it hanging for a while.

Ben
@Korvin are you on Discord by any chance? Also @BESW?

I can send you a text file with the rough outline. Yes, I am, what channel?

Instead be specific: Your story is about facing an irresistible and uncaring power bent on exploiting and destroying hope and happiness. So think about possible responses to that.

user15026
@BESW emphatic nodding

Ben
@MikeQ do you mind if we use your Discord Channel? Currently sittong OOC

1:35 AM
@Ben I am in mike's channel ...

Off the top of my head, three options based on the assumption that, in this kind of story, a healthy balance is impossible and extremes are the only option: you can become resigned and apathetic, deluded and in denial, or radical and defiant.
@Ben Hmm what for?

Ben
I am seeing where you are going with this, but I am also incredibly overtired so my mind is not really working past intake of information lol.
@BESW Might be an option for discussion/file transfer, etc?

I can drop the file if you like ... chew on it when brain is ready for such things

Ben
@KorvinStarmast "Mike's Awful Room?"
OK :)

@Ben yes

1:37 AM
@Ben My server. Identify yourself in the general chat, please.

Ben
@BESW Ahhh yes that is very good

Ben, are you woulfman1024?

Ben
@KorvinStarmast I am

I'll drop the file in a message then in discord

Ben
Sounds good!

1:45 AM
Oh look another PC vs monster buildout-based question: rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/145237/…

@BESW Is that an open invite?, I don't want to assume but being able to ping people in a non-public forum would be nice.

Nite all. :)

Ben
@KorvinStarmast [wave]

And worth every penny you paid for it. :)

@linksassin You may. Please know that I expect people to hold themselves to at least the same standard of respect that this chat room aspires to.

Ben
1:49 AM
And on that note; I too, will also take my leave. Commute beckons

Should I tell BESW that I have a working spell of summon troll? </oops>

@BESW Understood, I wouldn't have it any other way.

2:24 AM
@Joshua as long as you don't cast it in front of my most senior Druid ;)

@Shalvenay: I wouldn't worry about that. It summons a troll into a chatroom.

@Joshua hmm. I know of a place you can test such things at ;P
(trust me, they have blue, Jhon, and Hamilton. anything you could summon pales in comparison, troll-wise)

Magnatar sigil sequence #1: つ て し ん す

@Joshua got a Jsig to go with that? :)

No meaningful expansions of Jsig found :(

2:34 AM
@Joshua ah, sorry -- I'm referring to the J-signature (coordinates, if you will) of the magnetar in question

J1834.9-0846

@Joshua gusty XD

It's a great place to hold a disco party.

LOL

I had this brilliant idea to cast a stack of illusions on the surface to make it look like a dance floor. Wanna have a party. House rules: cast etherealness before coming. I don't care if you wear shoes or not. I won't have to clean anything.

2:53 AM
Hey. I'm still technically good aligned. What are afraid of?

I think you accidentally a noun.

What are you afraid of?

3:25 AM
Used my favorite "need to create a one-off D&D session in 10 minutes" technique to run a session tonight. So, room, what's your technique in that situation?

I write them based on the street signs I drive past on the way to the session

Ugh. Potions accident because somebody tried to store a spell requiring a secondary target in a potion.

NPCs Mcguffins whatever I need. Names and inspiration comes from whereever I am. I don't worry too much about it making sense if I'm running on that short notice

@linksassin That's cool. I should look at street signs more!

@BESW Nice--I printed that to add to my GM-pack.

You can, of course, use it for your own designs rather than in the group.
@nitsua60 For a long time my default D&D session was "the Vermin Lord has once again gathered enough divine power to invest a humanoid priest."

user15026
@BESW I don't know what it says about me that my first thought was "Hamster Princess?"

Throw a bunch of level-appropriate vermin at the party (rats, giant scorpions, snake-form naga), have them track the swarms of vermin to the priest where he's doing something verminy like sabotaging the local grain industry or gnawing on the heart of a dead god, and stamp out the Vermin Lord's influence.
@Ash That would... not be D&D.

user15026
@BESW This is true!

Yeah

3:35 AM
And now I'm wondering if Golden Sky Stories would be a good baseline system to hack for Hamster Princess stories.

It could be GSS though
@BESW oh you beat me to that one

user15026
I like this :D

user15026
(also I somehow missed book 6 coming out.)

I'm currently reading stuff from that author @BESW linked a couple days ago
Or Maybe it was even just yesterday
Nope about two days ago

user15026
3:42 AM
Which author?

user15026
Right now I am reading Crip Theory and also Queerly Loving Vol. 2.

Ro Anna Sylver?

user15026
@trogdor Oh, I loooooove their books!

user15026
I really liked their Parole books.

I bought two books that were part of a series and then bought another that isn't part of it because so far I like the first one a lot
@Ash that's where I started

user15026
3:45 AM
Excellent!

It's really good
Not quite the kind of story I'm used to but I'm liking it a lot

user15026
That was my reaction as well! It was a new style of thing for me, but once I was done it I was like "is there moooooore"

Are there more than two in that series?
If not I think I'll still like their other books but
If there is I probably want those
XD

user15026
There's two full length and then a collection of short stories.

Ah ok
I assume the full length ones are what I've got atm
But I think I'll take the collection too

user15026
3:49 AM
Chameleon Moon and The Lifeline Signal?

user15026
Those are the full length ones, yeah

user15026
Life Within Parole is the short story collection.

Yep those two
I have those

user15026
(There is a second short story collection coming eventually.)

I guess when I get home I'll grab Life
@Ash Oooh
I really like having a series to read
I burn through them kinda fast though

user15026
3:51 AM
Oh wait, Life Wthin Parole vol. 2 happened at some point and I missed it!

user15026
so there are two short story collections.

user15026
They have an unrelated to Parole stuff short story called "Moon Bright Tides" that I quite liked as well.

Oh that's what I got
That's the third book I grabbed
But I haven't started it yet

user15026
I liked it, it was adorable in its way :)

That's what it looks like

warning: long message from me incoming
And so my Monday night campaign comes to an end after having fought and beaten the BBEG in hell.

Our human fighter Rodric died and went to heaven (seemingly), reliving the prime of his life; our fallen aasimar oathbreaker paladin/Hexblade warlock(?) Axel died and went to hell, his soul enslaved (but he gave it up to save a kid's life). My mastermind rogue/battlemaster fighter character Vicril went down at least 4 times in the fight and died very close to the end, but got resurrected afterwards by the celestial warlock/shadow sorcerer/fighter(?) character Vigil - who showed up right as the

5:41 AM
@V2Blast Congrats, sounds like a great end to an interesting campaign. May your character enjoy and well earned retirement.

@nitsua60 It's never come up, but I'd probably use the one my sister wrote.
Well, assuming the group hadn't played it already.

@nitsua60 Another option I use it to straight steal session ideas from podcasts I know my players don't watch. Recently ran 'All Crims Night' from Oxventure (OutsideXbox Adventure on youtube)

5:58 AM
@linksassin Hehe, thanks :)

Q: Items that scale with level

TurkatronI want to start DMing. I have a low level item I want to give, but it is not very useful starting out. I would also like to say I am not familiar with most of the magic items available. This is more of a homebrew question(s). I want to have an underwater section of my campaign after level 5; the...

MerudoCan I cast Passwall under an enemy to drop them into a 20-foot pit? If so, does said enemy get any saving throw to avoid the effect?

same user as my previous message basically seems to have made a new post to ask roughly the same thing instead of editing their original question to fix it:

Q: Homebrew items that scale

TurkatronMechanically versus subjectively this is difficult. It’s a homebrew idea after all. I want a low magic item campaign in terms of how many magic items players receive but because my players won’t be getting many magical items I want those few items to get stronger with the players. As the player...

12:55 PM
@V2Blast Is the new question better?
Nope.

git is so confusing

GcL
It's not the most intuitive tool, but it's been getting better.
I'm happy it's not svn

@nitsua60 For "need to make a one off in 10 minutes" I use songs to create the basic story structure. (Example, Lynyrd Skynyrd's Gimme Three Steps to set up a tavern confrontation, Ian Hunter's The Ootsider for a bounty hunter/ranger based story hook).
Steeleye Span's "Allison Gross" for an encounter with a witch or a hag.

GcL
1:11 PM
That's clever. Your players ever notice?

@GcL Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Depends on how familiar they are with the music that I tend to play. :) I sometimes have a party mix of D&D tunes playing in the background. Donovan's "Must be the season of the witch" is a bit of a giveaway. :)

GcL
I thought witches only got an hour. Must have a good lobby to have been upgraded to an entire season.

GcL
I don't question the song. Music is in the ear of the beholder.

@GcL Indeed. Each of us has certain songs that we connect with for a variety of reasons.
And I just checked my cover of xanathar's, I don't see any ears. Que?

GcL
1:16 PM
@KorvinStarmast Unless your Bjork. Then "everything is music"
Which is the wrong answer. "What is bread?" would have been correct.

@GcL As I am not, it isn't. ;) We had a GM for Traveller some years ago who played mostly Yes and Hawkwind. Bread was a band from the 70's who had the hit called "Baby I'm A Want You"

GcL
@KorvinStarmast Did any of them go on to become members of Toast?

@GcL No, sadly, as that would have been a hotter act.

GcL
Damn. SNL Trebek was wrong!

@kviiri :'(
also Good morning all!

1:25 PM
Hi Rubik
Oh, any news from the credit company / airline?

@kviiri Not directly, but I'm actually getting increasingly hopeful. My bank sucessfully reversed the charges but told me they might re-reverse them pending an investigation. But it has been a couple weeks and it's still there! So maybe we actually made it out relatively unimpacted.
(we lost one hotel reservation but that was small compared to the plane tickets)
:)

@Rubiksmoose Neat, let's hope it sticks

And that turns out to be even more fortuitous because we actually rapidly decided to buy a house instead of reupping on the house we are renting, found, submitted an offer and just got it accepted! So we're going to need that cash lol

Oh cool, congrats!
We just moved, too. Almost done with the unpacking. Although this is rental

@Rubiksmoose grats on the house! What will it be called: Moose Villa?

1:31 PM
thanks! :D Nothing set in stone yet. Still got inspections to schedule and pass and accept, but things are looking good.

We call ours "Otter's nest", as usual :)

@kviiri oh boy that is a good feeling isn't it? When you are getting stuff unpacked and organized and getting to the end of it?

@Rubiksmoose yep
I also like our new flat a lot, although we are a bit worse on the soundproofing department than in our last flat. We can hear the neighbors fighting.
The other kind of "noisy marital life".
Or should I say... martial.

@KorvinStarmast hahaha we aren't quite to the naming stage yet :) But I have a feeling my wife would have Opinions on that name. XD

GcL
@Rubiksmoose Are you in the are that you can use that fiber internet service provider?

1:35 PM
@GcL Oooo. I'll have to check. ISPs were one of the things that I meant to check before giving an offer, but this house was far and away the leader of the pack already so I didn't bother.

GcL
@Rubiksmoose They might expand to the area you're in if they're not there already.
How old is the house?

Built in 1925
They say it has good bones.

GcL
Are the walls still plaster? or did someone swap out for drywall? Coved ceilings?

@GcL I miss svn T_T

GcL
@goodguy5 I miss it like I miss ThAC0

1:42 PM
part of the problem, is that my team doesn't use it right, so my "knowledge" of git is all janky.
so any time I try to do something the right way, it feels wrong

@GcL I believe it is still plaster. Some of the windows and sills are original too. It has been very well-kept.
I think it also has coved ceilings.

GcL
@Rubiksmoose Nice. Plaster is a bit of a pain to deal with, but It's really nice if you do keep it. Don't patch it with drywall products.
@goodguy5 I can understand not liking hammers if your team is hammering in screws all the time.
Have you considered finding a new team?

I have, but I have a newborn....

Also, that product is being retired anyway, so we'll just get to use something else the wrong way, I'm sure.

GcL
@goodguy5 Okay, first off... don't let your baby write code. You're going to end up with a mess of perl that way. You're retiring git? or git is part of a product?
Does anyone here use version control on their campaign materials or character sheets? Even google docs versioning?

@GcL I have my char sheets named with character level in a dropbox-folder. Does that count?

GcL
1:51 PM
@Someone_Evil Sure. Naming systems count. Have you had any issues doing it like that? Has it been useful for you?

:rolling_eyes:

but no. My team has two products, one of which is migrating to the other. The legacy product uses janky git versioning, and is going away.

The other product uses.... I honestly have no idea how it's versioned.

GcL
Does anyone on your team play table top games?

@GcL We'll almost certainly keep it whatever it is now/originally unless there is some super compelling reason not to. And we're going to have a lot to learn about home maintenance!

@GcL Being able to double check where my ability scores are coming from, and that yes I have always had that longbow for some reason has been nice, but it hasn't been vital. Although it's nice to still have the level 1 sheet around to see how far he's come...

@GcL I/we use drive and it works great. Though I'm not sure I use it as intended. I create a new file for each revision/level. I know at least one member just updates the same file and uses the versioning system

GcL
1:56 PM
@Rubiksmoose I found youtube helpful. Usually have to wade through a few videos on things I don't know about to really see what anyone is trying to explain.
@Someone_Evil That's cool.

@GcL I see myself leaning on this a lot in the future as well

GcL
I don't find the youtube videos for D&D topics nearly as useful.

@Rubiksmoose I hear rumors of a stack...

@Someone_Evil [gasp] there are other Stacks besides this One True Stack?!
;)

@GcL I don't THINK so.....

2:11 PM
DIY Stack is a pretty good one.

@Shalvenay Techdirt is good yes

We probably need to VtC Any tips to stop over-preparing to run a new game? for the time being until we get more info from OP. As-is the question is not viable in several respects.

@Rubiksmoose already did as too broad

Thanks!

1 hour later…
GcL
6:15 PM
@Rubiksmoose What's wrong with that question?

To what degree do you think you overprepare? That is, are you—in your head—micromanaging players' potential decisions and exploring all avenues of an adventure, no matter how remote? Or do you come up with an excessive amount of campaign material and end up with a host of details that never see play? Or both? Or something else? — Hey I Can Chan 2 hours ago
Their problem is undefined. Overpreparedness can take a lot of different shapes and have a lot of different effects and root causes. Thus, they also have different solutions.

GcL
wrong tab

hah! Well glad we cleared that up quick. Otherwise it would have been a very confusing conversation :)

GcL
I wonder if I have a copy of dragon #72
I wonder how Quadratic dug that up.

6:32 PM
Yeah that is darned impressive

GcL
Looks like a pirate copy was indexed by google at some point.

ah well that makes sense as well

GcL
Bless the pirates of old out of print things. I should see if I can find digital copies of the issues I'm missing.

Note to self: stop suggesting edits/improvements with semi-rhetorical questions. Just suggest the improvement.

GcL
@Rubiksmoose Who even likes getting rhetorical questions anyway?

6:45 PM
@GcL I find them effective most of the time when I receive them as suggestions. But that method of communication also comes from understanding the mechanisms of the site well and not everyone does or interprets it the same way.

@GcL haven't checked, but I think DMsGuild has most issues legally too. (having checked... they don't seem to have #72)

The case I think usually that indicates that it is ineffective is when I post a question to get OP to add something to their answer (eg "but what about X?"). For some people this is enough. On more than a few ocassions though another user ends up answering my comment with another comment mistaking (presumably) my question for an actual request for info. Which is highly reasonable.
I think an improvement for myself would be to write "I think it would be helpful if you added something to your answer to clarify if X?" instead of "But what about X?". Less room for confusion there I think.

GcL
but what about when that doesn't work?

@Rubiksmoose I feel like it might boil down to giving feedback that is more conversation-like (ie. natural) and feedback that is systematic, but consequently unambiguous

I think it's funny when two questions on different stacks appear related:
12
Q: Can I cast Passwall to drop an enemy into a 20-foot pit?

MerudoCan I cast Passwall under an enemy to drop them into a 20-foot pit? If so, does said enemy get any saving throw to avoid the effect?

Q: How would the world control an invulnerable immortal mass murderer?

malikc6This question came to me after re watching Jason movies and some Hulk movies. SCP-096 was a huge inspiration as well. @Rubiksmoose That edit to the title seems like a heck of a leap. rpg.stackexchange.com/posts/145300/revisions

@GcL how so?

GcL
I don't really know why they're asking for pre 1982, but when was it added to cannon doesn't seem to follow from that year
2nd edition was late 80's

@GcL Oh yeah I suppose that is a good point. I just wanted something more general in the title, but I think I can reword it to be more accurate.
Yeah I was making an assumption there.

Maybe "when did it first appear in D&D publications?

I just made it more specificly about 1982
that specific year seems important so I might as well leave it in the title
Not the pithiest of titles, but it works I think
Feel free to edit if you think you can improve it though

Yeah. The year does seem peculiarly specific, but hey, we don't know how they're going to use the answer.

yeah who knows.

We should probably leave it until the querent returns (assuming they do), having them provide their context and motivation should highlight why 1982 and whether it actually is the same thing the QuadraticW. knows about (although that seems likely)

@Someone_Evil I mean this is one of those judgement calls, but I personally feel fine with the edit and reopen. The question was written in very broken English but the question seemed crystal clear to me
We don't need the why to answer the question though it is always nice to know
(The biggest problem with the question IMO was that it made the fairly common error among new users of putting the question in the title but not in the body)

@Rubiksmoose My main point is that it would not surprise me if more than one thing in the history of D&D has been called something as generic as "Wonderstone"
