I think we have a question about it, somewhere. Does upcasting a spell make it a higher level spell?

@goodguy5 Yes, I'm pretty sure

@goodguy5 I was looking at the exact same thing
I have an answer about it for sure about a raksasha (sp?)

"When a spell caster casts a spell using a slot that is of a higher level than the spell, the spell assumes the higher level for that casting. For instance, if Umara casts magic missile using one of her 2nd-level slots, that magic missile is 2nd level."
PHB 201 according to this citation

Globe of invulnerability blocks a spell that has a level lower than the globe's level, even if the other spell is cast with a higher level slot. For example, if the globe is 7th-level, it blocks spells of 6th level or lower, even a 6th-level spell cast with a 7th-level slot. #DnD https://twitter.com/DerynDraconis/status/966428486591287300
Is there any way this JC tweet does not contradict the text here?

@Rubiksmoose That seems.... wrong....
JC's Tweet directly contradicts that text.

3:10 PM
Agreed

Yeah tht is.... pretty blatant

25
A: Does upcasting bypass Limited Magic Immunity?

RubiksmooseUpcasting does indeed bypass limited magic immunity When a spellcaster casts a spell using a slot that is of a higher level than the spell, the spell assumes the higher level for that casting. (PHB p.201) The general rule is that a spell cast using a higher level spell slot is actually that...

He even contradicts himself (shocking)

I guess thats a unique... property... of Globe of Invuln.?

There is a very mild bs argument to be made that "spell of x level" is different than "x level spell", but that's a level of semantic finger waggling even I am not willing to take on.

@goodguy5 The Globe specifically says that spells are blocked, "even if the spell is cast using a higher level spell slot." — BlueMoon93 3 mins ago

3:14 PM
@Rubiksmoose ah, thank you
I missed that the other 4 times I read the spell

Same

Does that JC ruling also explicitly contradict the text of the spell as well?!?!

No, it's aligned with it

oh no.
JC rulings contradicting text is .... bad ......
pls don't go the same way as sage advice of yesteryears

ohhhhhh I see

3:15 PM
Knowing that fact is in the spell description I think JC is right here

Ok we are cool JC is not insane here we are all just bad at reading

@Rubiksmoose It's monday.

what happens if you have two globes of invulnerability, upcast?

@SirCinnamon i declare today Double Monday
it's monday, but x2

@goodguy5 have how? cast on the same target or what?

3:16 PM
very rare cosmic event but it happens

@doppelgreener Well in the US it is a Monday after a holiday. So yeah. Super Monday.

like a supermoon, but more super

Super Moonday.

Sam and Pam both have wizard friends. They both upcast 1 level of GoI, so that they block 6th level spells.

Sam and Pam walk towards each other.
Then what

They are exluded from the AOE of each others spheres
> Similarly, the area within the barrier is excluded from the areas affected by such spells.

3:19 PM
Does that make them fireballable?
(_{__)_}

Hmmm how would that work?
The AOE of GoI don't cancel out, they just don't intrude into the sphere.

Why not?
Are you saying that the sphere's aren't area affects?

Maybe I'm missing something then.

cast from outside the barrier can't affect things in it

Let us step through this bit by bit. Yes both spheres are AOE.

3:22 PM
and blocks area affects
lemme draw a picture in paint. 1 sec

I'm with you so far.

theory: wizards don't actually know how this works, and in a surprising feat of self-preservation, no two wizards of a spell level this high have actually been game enough to experiment.

@goodguy5 Unless you throw a Fireball at them, I don't think you'll notice anything.
Also, GoI doesn't do anything to creatures or objects, it just affects spells.

@doppelgreener XD That is so very Discworld that I immediately pictured Rincewind running away from another wizard who is trying to test this.

My take: Globes of Invulnerability work like XOR fields: two of them near each other create a zone, defined by the intersection of those two fields, where spells do work, and spells targeting the area covered by only one field would not work. When you have 3 fields, the area covered by three fields blocks spells, two fields does not, one does. 4 fields does not block spells, 5 fields does.

3:26 PM
If you upcast a spell, does that change its spell level?

But only, if it's upcast, at least once. (in this specific case)

My take is that Globe of Invulnerability doesn't target anyone or anything within its radius. Therefore, two GoIs don't affect each other.

@goodguy5 By my reading, the area in between would still be affected by sphere 1, but not by sphere 2

@goodguy5 Well, yeah. They need to be upcast high enough to interact with each other.
GOI cast at its normal level wouldn't affect other GOI, and they'd just have overlapping zones.

And technically, it doesn't affect creatures or objects within its radius.

3:28 PM
> Similarly, the area within the barrier is excluded from the areas affected by such spells.

@Rubiksmoose but why?

It affects spells targeted at those creatures and objects.

@goodguy5 Because it is "excluded from the area" of spells cast from outside the sphere.

yea, both are
how do you decide which is "sphere 1" or 2?

Ah I see.
Yeah I guess they would effective cancel out then.

3:30 PM
If you think about GoI as a magical missile defense system, then two of them overlapping shouldn't cancel each other out.

@Yuuki unless you think of it as a magical missile defense DEFENSE system ;)

@Yuuki But I mean the text does support that they do cancel if you wrap your head around it, which I seem to have done now.

Also, GoI is immobile.
So two wizards can't cast it and then move towards each other.

@Yuuki oh! That is a good point!

I mean, you can just cast it on top of each other.
GoI doesn't prevent casting, just effects

3:36 PM
I can see the interpretation of how GoI cancel each other out but that's not how I view it.

@NautArch It never occurred to me that step of the wind "doubling jump distance" applied to height as well as long jump distance. Haven't seen a ruling on that, but I like it. You seen anything else on that?

And I wouldn't rule it out that way myself.
Besides, that interpretation also lends itself to "one GoI overrides the other and the area is still protected against spells".
@goodguy5 Roll initiative.

@KorvinStarmast I haven't, but both High and Long Jumps are still Jumps
And i'd probably recommend cleaning up your answer to just include the high jump from OP. I think it's overcomplicating your answer and making it harder to understand.

Ben
Hey @NautArch. The Minotaur Storm barb is going awesomely :D

@Ben nice!!!
tell us some stories :)

Ben
3:48 PM
Just a couple of setbacks... Apparently there is going to be at least one boss that's got an anti-magic field

@Ben ruhroh

> Other wizard: "No, come baaack! We have to do the scieeence!"
Rincewind: "This must be why the other continents don't have wizards!! Aaaa!!!"

@Ben hmm, guess you'll be doing ranged attacks for that boss
is the field dispellable or natural?

Ben
So far the setting is that we're after some booms from the gods, in order to help one of the emperor's children rise to the throne. We've got one month, to try and get as many boons as we can.
There are 2 dungeons the "dungeon if many things" (basically randomly generated) and the temple of the gods.
Not sure about that TBH. But it's a good thing I took that +1 bow lol
The other issue, while it won't overly affect anything right now, is that apparently there's a lot to how many items you can attune to. So I have some items to return lol. Fortunately none of the original 6 you planned out lol
The other thing is that, if I base it on our first session, it's likely this is going to be almost entirely combat-based.
But, all in all, it went really well. Lots of angry mooing haha
Limit* not lot

@NautArch Well, he seemed to add his movement to the question, so I tried to explain how it all works. I did some clean up, but more is needed.

4:01 PM
@KorvinStarmast Up to you :) I submitted my own, though.
@Ben the ones I had chosen shouldn't have been an issue. Most don't require attunement.
the magic weapons don't
which ones you do you have that requirement attunement besides the belt?

Ben
@NautArch All the other ones I chose haha. I have 3 rings, the gloves do... And I think the bracers. Not sure.
But I'm thinking that in place of a few of those items, a potion of growth... Or 3... Wouldn't go astray

@Ben ruhroh. Potions can be tricky since they're just one-use. Let me know if you want some ideas/help and what you can choose from.

Ben
Oh everything is on the table, just so long as it's very rare or lower. Nothing legendary.
And limited to 3 attuned items

right, but you got extra stuff above and beyond what you said you get originally.
with the 22k gold, right?

Ben
@NautArch I'm OK with that. Might get a bag of holding or something just so I can stash a few, and the idea is that you can have as many as is "reasonable". Like, obviously you're not going to stash 200 potions of growth, and another 500 potions of greater healing.
@NautArch Yeah. I think I posted a link a few days back with all the items

4:15 PM
I love that "bards pay for college" question.

@Ben I'd probably go with the belt, ring of protection, and bracers for your 3 attunement slots

Ben
Found it. Listed all the Minotaur, Barb, and fighter abilities, and all the items I had, so I had a reference lol

@Ben I choose to imagine that this is not a misspelling and you're looking for some divine microphones.

@Ben Some consumables are good to throw around, but have a care with any that are "quest items needed to unlock later content." Make sure there is a mark, and some clues, that it is related to something later.

Ben
@Yuuki Actually not entirely incorrect. Due to an enunciation mishap we all refer to them as "spoons" lol

4:18 PM
@goodguy5 I edited out the "my dm is being a D" bit ... and I think it might be a dupe of "Is the DM always right" but I'd need to see the edition clarified first.

Ben
@KorvinStarmast Yeah, I don't want to rely on them in any way. Just a "nice to have"

@KorvinStarmast I mean, it depends on if they're asking "Can the DM do this?!" or "IS THIS REALLY THE RUL3S!?!"

@Ben I'd swap out of gloves of swimming/climbing for CLoak of Manta Ray.
The GEm of Brigthness could be fun

Ben
Gem of brightness?

can we get one more vote to close on this question until they mark the tags?

https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/136256/should-bards-have-to-pay-for-their-colleges

ty

@Ben if you wanted to keep the cloak of protection (uncommon), you could trade in the ring of protection (rare) for something like the beads of force.

Ben
@NautArch the item rarity isn't an issue
@Yuuki That last panel...

@Ben ikr

4:28 PM
@Ben well, it is in terms of using your rare for another rare :)

@Ben I missed the premise. What are you collaging magic items for?

Ben
A game I've joined. I have 22k gold to spend on additional magical items. @DavidCoffron
@NautArch I do like the idea of the manta ray cloak. So that would replace the cloak of protection.

@Ben Well, I'd proabbly have it replace the gloves swimming'climbing.
And I'd likely keep the Cloak of Protection over the Ring of Protection so you can exchange for a higher value item.

Ben
Well, they're gonna go regardless haha
Ah I see

@Ben Do you have your final build posted? (level 20 barbarian?) I think I was in on an earlier version of this.

Ben
4:35 PM
I was using the "sane magical prices" list, just fyi
And that homebrewery link I posted just above is all the abilities and magical items I have
I think I should bow out for now though. It's currently 2.30am haha

@Ben but a bag of holding is always useful, too.

@Yuuki That is fantastic.

Is there any reason to have a bag of holding and not a handy haversack?

@goodguy5 handy haversacks are rare and therefore more expensive than the bag.

Is that true of previous editions? I always thought of them in the same light.

4:42 PM
@goodguy5 dunno.

23
Q: Handy Haversack vs. Bag of Holding

Jason_c_oThe Bag of Holding (DMG pg.153) is an uncommon magic item and has a significantly greater volume than any of the pouches (or even all combined) of Heward's Handy Haversack (DMG pg.174), which is rare. My confusion stems from the fact that, while the Bag of Holding is obviously superior to Heward...

ah ha

Beat me to it look

5:13 PM
@NautArch In 3.5 at least Handy Haversacks were also smaller than Bags of Holding.

@GreySage They are in 5e as well. 500 pounds for the BoH vs 80 pounds for the HHH.
I'd immediately errata that item retrieval from the Handy Haversack can be done as a Free Object Interaction rather than as an Action; or that items retrieved from the Bag of Holding require a % roll to successfully retrieve while in combat.
Because otherwise, what's the point?

5:30 PM
@Ben a level 20 character still getting in tavern brawls? I feel bad for the other patrons
Also, what tribe needs a level 20 barbarian/fighter to have more power before they can become a warrior of the clan? This clan must be ridiculous.

5:49 PM
@DavidCoffron A clan of demi-gods lol

6:18 PM
Yea. You're hanging out in a deity bar. Cayden Cailean and the like

7:00 PM
@goodguy5 Is that whats in the back room of the apple store?

@SirCinnamon wait, you didn't know? Was I not supposed to share that?

The way I'd interpret this is that when Sending, you could plausibly disguise your voice/mannerisms to obfuscate your identity (contested by an Insight/Deception check), but I don't think that's a RAW ruling: rpg.stackexchange.com/q/136267/42386

@Xirema yeah, i don't think you can obfuscate. Those illusion spells are just illusions. Sending is a purely mental magic exercise that works the way it says it does.
The only way thing I'd consider is someone using something like the Ring of Mind Shielding, but even that I don't think would doit.

A monk with 20 strength and access to the jump spell can jump ... 54? feet into the air.
So, double dash
Run up a building for some number of feet and then jump up higher.

@goodguy5 (7*3)*2=42 feet?

7:14 PM
how is jumping calculated?

How do you get 54?
3+Strength modifier. Oh, that's 8. D'oh.

I thought it was 4+str mod
Wait, how'd I still get the right number? lol
oh, I didn't

48 should be the number.

Oh okay. That makes sense.
I thought it was 4.
even still. 48 feet vertical is intense.

it's magic with more magic

7:16 PM
sure, requires some shenannigans

@goodguy5 uses a spell slot and a ki point

Throw in a haste.

I think you can move 400 feet straight up

@goodguy5 Haste doesn't change your jump distance

no, but it does give you an extra action you can dash with

which doesn't affect your jump distance

7:19 PM
There is a broadcast 360° feed of the NASA InSight landing mission from inside the HQ. The robot is landing around noon PST, in 40 minutes from now.
3

yes, but I'm talking about running up a building and jumping further up.
I'm just being silly for the sake of being silly

@goodguy5 Ah, well that's going to be very dependent on the height of the building.

@goodguy5 That's a good thing.

@NautArch I assume it's an evil guy's castle
Wait a minute.... can a monk run up a vertical surface and jump to another vertical surface on the same plane and keep running?
|
|
|
gap
gap
|
|
|

Wuxia movies say yes.

7:22 PM
@goodguy5 I don't see why not.

ugh, those edits made it horrible lol
and interesting
and my last monk movement question:

Can monks run on walls that are "beyond" vertical?

@goodguy5 I'd still say yes. Mostly because I don't want to deal with angles :)

@NautArch Yea. they're always fighting devlis

ha :D

7:51 PM
2D view is here BTW: nasa.gov/nasalive
It landed OK!

they are pretty happy about it in there too
XD

I was watching the feed with the sound off, but they way they reacted made it seem like that wasn't the outcome they were expecting. XD

there have been 17 prior missions to Mars and 10 of them have crashed

@doppelgreener Great news, hope it finds interesting stuff.

That was an exciting moment

8:02 PM
and as the guy explained, they have tested all the components, but they cannot test them all together so they could not be sure everything will actually work, and even if everything works perfectly, the rover could just land on top of a rock and then it's gone.
also, both the experimental microsatellites they launched to help communicate with the rover worked perfectly

Thats the "Marco" they refer to?
4" square, 2 of them
thats cool

@doppelgreener Ah, that makes a lot of sense then. So they really weren't certain about this landing occurring successfully.

very exciting in that context

yeah :)
@SirCinnamon right! marco-a and marco-b, standing for Mars Cube One
Mars Cube One being the mission name

8:32 PM
@SirCinnamon polo

We've had a lot of bad questions today. I wonder why

@goodguy5 Monday after a long holiday weekend fora lot of folks. There may be a greater than average number of poeple playing/being introduced to that game.

fair enough
as an aside, this method of relaying stats offends me.
I currently have a Lvl 4 Scourge Aasimar Cleric, forge artisan background, Str/Dex 12, Con/Int 14 and Wis/Cha 18

@goodguy5 Works for me; why the offense?

@goodguy5 Huh. It's compact I'll give it that.

8:41 PM
I am hoping we get some clarification, or it'll be closed.

@KorvinStarmast Each stat gets it's own line!
also, just a weird stat array

@KorvinStarmast too late for that.

@goodguy5 Ah, we have a purist in our midst. :)

@NautArch I think your response to the comment made sense

8:43 PM
@NautArch it seems like the other side of the same question-coin to me.

@KorvinStarmast I mean, I'm pretty sure you are identified to the other person with who they know you as. If you're operating under an alias and that's who they know...then that's who you're identified as.

"If one doesn't ever know me, do they recognize a message?"
and
"can I message someone so that they don't know me?"

@goodguy5 Which is very different than how do I hide who I am from someone who knows me.

Fair
I suppose answering that with "Make sure no one knows you" is a bit contrived

@goodguy5 but that comment seems to be asking "Someone knows me as X, but I'm Y. Am I identified as X or Y?"

8:45 PM
@NautArch Yes, but some tables will have a variety of intrigue and deception going on, so I can see how that question arises ... rules aren't specific, so I'd like to see the comment be raised as a separate, but related, question.
@NautArch And yeah, that is a separate question.

@KorvinStarmast That was my thought as well. It's an interesting enough question to deserve it's own.

@Rubiksmoose additionally, they can't multiclass into fighter, afaik

@goodguy5 Who can't?
Str too low?

Mr. "str/dex12"
yea, needs 13

I feel like a lot of that stuff brushes up against some really intense questions about self-identity in D&D, in a more philosophical space.

8:49 PM
"I identify as a Unicorn. Do I register on Detect Evil and Good?"

Like, suppose someone Sends to you, then undergoes some kind of accident/magic BS that totally erases their mind, and then decades later, having essentially been "reborn" as a person, Sends to you again. Do you recognize them as their original self, even though philosophically, that person doesn't exist?

also, I just realized, that "unicorn" uses the article 'a', not the article 'an'.

I assume because it makes a 'y' sound?

@goodguy5 Not that kind of identity.

@Xirema So they've been completely 'reborn', but they still know you?

@Xirema Amnesia doesn't even have to be involved. What if the last time they saw you was in middle school?

8:50 PM
@Yuuki ^

oh, that makes more D&D sense

If Father Comstock casts Sending to Elizabeth, does she know that he's Booker Dewitt? Is Identity like a UUID attached to every soul that has ever existed?

or what if it's jeckyl and hyde?

(I'd say 'spoilers!' but if you know that reference, then you weren't at risk of being spoiled anyways)

@Xirema I think it's more that the identity is linked by the connection made by the receiver. If receiver knows sender as X, but they are pretending they are Y to everyone else, the receiver will know them as X. If the receiver knows them as Y, but they really are X, they are known as Y because that's the relationship.

8:58 PM
The truth is that nobody is recognized through Sending because can you ever say you really know someone?

How complicated do you want your table to be? Talk to each other, arrive at a consensus. I don't see there being a problem here.

@Yuuki Heh, I know that's being kind jokey, but that's the crux of my argument. You are known by who people think you are.
which is pretty depressing to think about.

@NautArch My Burning Crusade raiding guild thought I was a retired English professor.
(Reader, I was not.)

@BESW But we know better. We know you're four retired English professors.

@NautArch On the other hand, it's also uplifting. For example, it's reassuring to know that nobody knows how I'm neurotic to the point that I use chopsticks to avoid getting Flamin' Hot Cheetos dust on my fingers.
wait
dammit

9:01 PM
@Yuuki But it'll still get on your mouth. A more effective method must be found.

Dissolve Cheetos in liquid. Inject into body.

@Rubiksmoose they buuuurrrrnnnnn

My solution is just not to eat them, really.

@BESW Right, so if you were to Send to them, they'd get the message from their retired English Professor associate.

@BESW You are, in fact, still on your first set of tires.

9:04 PM
@NautArch I guess that resolves the ambiguity issues most cleanly, IMO.

@BESW But see that is 0% effective method of eating cheetos. 0 dust but also 0 cheetos.

@Xirema In my deranged mind, at least.

@Rubiksmoose This is starred in hopes that it hits HNQ and gets everyone to see the light on proper Cheetos consumption ...

I don't like regular Cheetos but I enjoy the Flamin' Hot ones.

@Rubiksmoose I thought one of the best parts of eating cheetos is licking your fingers after?
My old man stomach can't do spicy anymore.

9:05 PM
@NautArch Yep, I thought that went without saying. (The finger licking deal)

It's been like a decade since the last time I ate cheetos.

When I was in junior high school, our drug education teacher spread the rumor (that had been in the local news paper) there there were people injecting peanut butter and mayonnaise to get high. (I suspect she was victim of an urban legend ...)
@Xirema It's been a week for me, and I am starting to get a bit twitchy ...

@NautArch Eurgh.

It's also been like a decade since the last time I ate bacon. As a person with one semester of experience in statistics, I'm therefore forced to conclude that Bacon causes people to eat Cheetos, or vise-versa.
We just need a controlled double-blind experiment to determine the true causality.

@Xirema You have uncovered the nexus of the Bacon/Cheetos conspiracy. Expect black helicopters to fly around your house soon ...

9:10 PM
And now I want to rub bacon with cheeto dust and fry it.

For the alternative bacon experience, sans Cheetos, we have this delicious morsel

Hot Cheetos turkey will spice up Thanksgiving dinner https://abc7.la/2TrGEVB

@Yuuki it's....beautiful

@Yuuki The desecration of that Turkey will not go unpunished! Cheetos are a snack food, not an entrée and certainly not breading! Heresy!
Unless you deep fry the turkey

^hear hear

9:12 PM
@KorvinStarmast Spoken like a man who has never eaten corn flake chicken.

@NautArch I do not consider chicken a sacred bird, whereas I do the Turkey. (Corn flaked breading on fish I have had, however. My brother in law does that frequently with trout caught in the intercoastal waterWay)

> Who would Cheetos bear,
To lick and wash under a weary dust,
But that the dread of something after dust,
The undiscovered grocery from whose bourn
No snacker returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those munchies we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?

Or as they refer to it locally "the Laguna Madre" ... I think you may be familiar with that waterway?

@KorvinStarmast You know what they say. No lake, no trout.

@BESW Tis a constipation devoutly to be wish'd
@Yuuki I suspect you've not enjoyed trout from the Laguna Madre the day it was caught.

9:15 PM
@Yuuki On a archeology dig I was on, we set up our outhouse over the ocean. Lots of local brown trout.

@NautArch There went the multi classing question.

@KorvinStarmast ohwells. gave him an upvote to to help them on their way

@NautArch Another reason not to fish for trout in the ocean ... 8^O
@NautArch Darnit, I can't get that idea out of my head now. And we just bought bacon this weekend.
Technique wise, Iid recommend the Cheetos dust rubbed bacon be done in the oven, 400 deg F, in a deep dish. Preserve the Cheetos/bacon contact. Also better chance to get the crispy texture just right ....

@KorvinStarmast muahahahaahahahaha

9x 13 baking dish ...

9:25 PM
Regarding the Sending question, this person changed their answer completely.
Wait no, never mind.
Scratch that, interpreted that incorrectly.

9:52 PM
Guildmaster's guide to Ravnica has been out for a week, anyone read it yet?

@GreySage All of the backgrounds add spells to your spellcasting class' spell list, if you have a spellcasting class, regardless of what it is. =O
That's a feature I wasn't expecting to show up in a Core sourcebook.
