Then it's also easier to go purple, since otherwise you'd have to go very fast indeed
I guess my real question then is whether it would be dopplereder or doppleredder (is the color comparative or interposed in the word "doppleer"
oh, interesting
Also, I'd like to see some of these colors given some air-time: blog.xkcd.com/2010/05/03/color-survey-results
Light version of a "sonic boom" - a photonic Mach cone
@nitsua60 What about these colors eh? aiweirdness.com/post/160776374467/…
15:05
Sane green (Actually purple)
That explains the @doppelgreener > purpler shift
@Rubiksmoose Oh, gosh, were you around for the recipe discussion the other day?
I came as close as I can remember to falling off my chair laughing.
Recipe discussion?
@nitsua60 I don't think so? I'm now very sad I missed this lol
In 2013, IBM Watson did some pretty good generated recipes
And not even the real one, just a portable baby Watson
ugh, my best friend is hopelessly stupid
15:07
I got to play with it, it was fun
@DavidCoffron if a doppelgreener ever appears covered in red, please call and ambulance and/or police (depending on the origin of the red) and leave debating how they should be named until emergency respondents are on their way.
@Rubiksmoose starts here:
yesterday, by nitsua60
Oh god I'm crying from the lolfigsl: Mix all ingredients except cheese and process 1 hour.
Oh my. That recipe discussion was priceless
> 1 1-inch
actually, doppelpurpler answers the question. it would be doppelreder.
Otherwise it would have been doppelpurpleer
15:10
> 1 up
I only know 7 up, where can i buy 1 up
@SPavel Procure a can of 7-up and downvote it 6 times.
@Yuuki How many close votes is that?
Good wine drained chili
You could probably make a wine-based chili
I got that WSJ Wines 15 for $100 box, I have wine to spare
@goodguy5 doppelpurpleers are a rebel faction with some controversial opinions.
15:12
@nitsua60 That conversation is TFW (too funny for work). Oh man I'm going to have to give that article a thorough read with my wife
I wish I could pay my work, library style, for copies/printouts.
I mean, I'm going to print things, but I'll feel a little bad about it.
@goodguy5 You can't do it free?
I CAN, but if I get to a certain point, it'd be improper.
So what's the problem
"It is been ribsotro" I'm not hiding my laughter well at work
15:16
Like, if I wanted to print out like 50 pages, that might catch a glance or a conversation with my manager
@goodguy5 Print 10 pages at a time
5 times a day
@SPavel again, yes. I understand how I can "get away with it"
@goodguy5 So what is the issue
Why would you feel bad if you can get away with it
guilt?
because I'd like to pay the 2-bucks (or whatever menial amount) for the copies
Just give $2 to a hobo
$2 of guilt is like, a rounding error
15:18
@goodguy5 I get that - its a pain to be stealthy and worry about being caught and having to explain yourself - i would rather just pay for the convenience
Your work exploits both its employees and its customers for millions, the least you can do is get back at them
eh, I get paid decently and slack off a lot.
Wage labour is inherently an exploitative relationship
@SPavel The real kicker is he's self employed
Tell him, komrade
15:21
@goodguy5 That's the right attitude!
@goodguy5 As long as you work hard, you deserve whatever resources the company has to offer its employees
@SirCinnamon this is what lolfigsl was invented for =)
Why work when you have free Wi-Fi
@nitsua60 Had to look that one up but yeah very fitting
@SirCinnamon It's like the way I'd like to pay WotC for electronic copies of their books.
15:27
@nitsua60 Exactly! Pirating is convenient if guilt-causing - but there isnt a way to purchase digiitally
You can't buy pdfs?
That seems counterintuitive...
@SimonH. I am always somewhat amazed when companies actively stop me from giving them money
@GreySage Yeah. Maybe they think it'll make piracy easier if they sell files, but it's gonna happen anyway
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Obviously the most ethical solution is to get the material from the source
@SimonH. The worst I've seen is when buying an e-book. The website will advertise it, give the price, but for some reason not have a "add to cart" or "buy" button.
15:32
And you do that by kidnapping one the WoTC designers and sealing them in a protective room in your basement, and then pay them in bread and water until they write out a copy of the rules, by hand
So I just go to another website and buy it there
@MikeQ The whole point was to have an electronic copy. So they've got to type it, not write it. We're not barbarians, man!
@GreySage Yeah, you have to plug in your kindle or else you're not allowed to read it
@nitsua60 Okay, so you give them a windows 95 box with a word processor. No internet connection... to keep them safe from cyberbullies, of course.
@MikeQ What if there are pre-installed cyberbullies
Like a Clippy, but mean
15:35
@SPavel Mirror Clippy, the one with a goatee
"I see you're trying to write a stat block, ya dweeb"
"Looks like widdwe baby needs some help with formatting this character class table"
Dndbeyond is kind of like the PDF. I mean, it's not a real PDF, but the mobile app is basically an electronic version.
You delete clippy in system32 and download bonzi buddy
Problem solved
No Clippy, only Monika
Just Monika
15:38
Well, Bonzi Buddy can't do much without an internet connection
Floppy is mean enough on his own. Don't tell me how to spell. Let me live my lyfe
Clippy*
I am very confused by @David's chat avatar
@SPavel Leave the internet connection, delete IE and Chrome. They won't figure out how to use the console.
Is it not me on a bench?
@SimonH. You can't delete IE
15:40
@DavidCoffron No, it's your name and some user stats
IIRC, Windows Explorer on 95 was just reskinned IE
If you plugged in a URL, it would open the website
That's not what it is for me
@SPavel Wait, seriously? Why?
@SimonH. Because Microsoft
That was Windows way of making things "convenient"
15:42
I think you can't delete Safari on OS X either though
@SPavel DOOT DOOT DOOT DOOT
So load up a Linux desktop and they won't be able to do anything at all :P
Yeah I deleted safari
On my old macbook
To be fair though, "oops my 4 year old deleted the browser and now I am stuck" is pretty bad user experience
And IE is lightweight enough that it's not really wasting that much space
15:44
Tru, but they deserve it for bad parenting. Just get a thumb drive with the files on it.
Wasting space!?! It's the best browser on the market!!
HAHAHAHA
to me it's this, but that's because i have a privacy addon that blocks facebook avatars from loading
Can you see mine, then?
15:45
@SimonH. Yours is some kawaii looking fox thing
It is a cute starfox
I'll update my avatar when I get the chance. I just created my account through FB and never got around to it
it is fine to use facebook avatars, so i don't mean to suggest you shouldn't
@MikeQ Oh joy, I'm glad gravatar still works :3
i'll block them, others won't
15:49
I don't mind facebook avatars, just facebook itself
I was just being lazy. I have an avatar I usually use for things
@SimonH. i finally did a full delete
@NautArch On Facebook?
@SimonH. yeah
i mind facebook avatars because they're a tracking component of facebook.
15:52
@NautArch Congrats man, I know that can be hard for some people
@SimonH. wasn't too hard. I'd been off it for over a year :)
harder part is i've got a buddy who works there and i dn't think he's super happy about me leaving
But, where will you keep pictures of your food and laugh about that jerk in highschool!?
@goodguy5 Reddit? Youtube?
Myspace? Google+? Instagram? Pinterest?
I post photos of my food to Google Maps
The best place to laugh at the jerk from High School is the Mcdonalds drive-thru where he works
i laugh about that jerk in highschool at his grave
15:56
@SPavel #savage. But I don't live in my home town anymore
( Í¡° ͜ʖ Í¡°)
I laugh about that jerk in highschool in the mirror. I wonder what they're up to now...
@doppelgreener Yeah, but not all of us murdered our bullies
w-who ever said that's what happened
@doppelgreener The gravestone literally reads "Doppelgreener did it"
15:57
damn
Haha no you need glasses for that
they're onto me
@SimonH. also, are you trying to imply there are sane/rational people that still use myspace, but not facebook?
@goodguy5 You're trying to imply that anyone under the age of 50 uses either?
15:59
I use Facebook mostly for messaging ~5 people
Google hangouts, skype, and kik all fill that same role
@SimonH. I use facebook. again, mostly for pictures and wondering what people who I went to highschool with
Plus texting
and Skype is garbage. don't use it
The ~5 people I message on Facebook don't use those
There are other people I message on Skype and Hangouts
16:00
@goodguy5 I used to, the only thing I hated was the call sound
I also have Line and Whatsapp for a few more people
ugh, so many platforms.
1-2 of my coworkers made me get slack
I have that too
I miss the days of MSN messenger
Yeah, why don't we all just use stackexchange
:P
You could do custom emoticons and sloooooowly share songs
16:02
@SPavel ikr. My last office had the msn work client. Now, we have "Skype for business" or whatever. what a hot load of trash that is.
My last company had an account at Microsoft, they insisted on using Skype for Business
We'd have calls ~twice a week, every time something would go wrong
yep
alright. lunch time. ttyl
Everyone should just directly upload and stream video to a server and split the feeds between 20 screens. Much better than Skype. :P
At work now we have this thing called Nexi which is not too terrible
Blackboard actually has a pretty good video sharing app
16:07
Ah, Blackboard
The only thing worse is SWoRD
My school started using Brightspace. Much worse
16:28
So, this is silly, but I found an old question that probably should be closed.
@Rubiksmoose Why close it?
@MikeQ way too broad IMO. It is asking a LOT of questions that should really be separated into separate ones.
even the big ones: familiars and animal companions function very differently at their very core so they really should have been asked individually IMO
and then we have sub questions asking about companion -> t-rex, companion->rock->t-rex, companion -> rock -> t-rex? -> gold dragon?
Separating it into multiple new questions would likely generate some interesting answers so I'm for closing it as long as me re-asking a more focused versions of the question isnt going to get duplicate linked.
@Rubiksmoose do you know what the general policy for asking the same-ish question better for old questions that get closed?
@DavidCoffron I think in a case like this it would actually probably be beneficial to just close it and then ask the questions ourselves. I think this is something that does get done on occasion. I was planning on asking about it on meta maybe and then asking a new question if appropriate.
@DavidCoffron not off-hand
16:44
@Rubiksmoose Though for the multiple true polymorph case (companion into huge rock into t-rex), This answer cover it pretty well
@DavidCoffron Yeah I mean there are definitely some questions in there that I am not really interested in. So if this occurs I wouldn't want to just separate each and every thing into its own.
Here Crawford rules on Find Greater Steed. Seems a lot of the other mechanics would be similar (if not for the Ranger' s Companion, at least for Find Familiar)
@DavidCoffron yup! I found the same thing. I was actually working on an answer to the question when I came to the conclusion that it was prett unworkable.

Q: How should I deal with this old question that is too broad/vague but I want answers to?

RubiksmooseSo the question is: How does true polymorph interact with class feature companions? 1. Should we close it? In my opinion, it has way too many major questions and sub-questions in it to be a good question and should probably be closed for that reason. But it is very old and both the asker and th...

Oracle spam
Someone mute oracle, I think it's a spam bot
Might have to call the cyberpolice
@SimonH. How dare you slander the wise and glorious Oracle. See if your questions ever get spammed here again :P
darnit, can't find my thermal paste :(
@NautArch oh no! Just use toothpaste. They are basically the same thing :P
@Rubiksmoose I mean, i don't know the shelf life, but i probably should have bought new stuff anyway :). I think I bought it about 15 years ago.
back when arctic silver 3 was new
17:16
@NautArch yup I think it is definitely time for some new stuff. Wowza.
I just had a conversation with someone about fantasy tavern names.
the gems of the conversation were The Groggy Hog and...

Arr! Bees!
@goodguy5 My wife's favorite is "A Cure for What Ales Ye"
The best names for anything are puns
17:19
@MikeQ The best anythings are puns.
I read that as the Groggy Hag and was picturing something very different
How about "Lost Wine of Phandelver"
or "Beer Today, Gone Tomorrow"
Wine Knot?
"I was a Loon" (i.e. I... Wuh? Saloon?)
It's not a pun, but I frequently use The Cloak & Dagger as a tavern name
17:24
The Speakqueasy
Ryes of the Saloonlords
Done Gins and Flagons (alt, Drunkards and Flagons)
The Ratskeller, tavern for the downtrodden
Flank, Shank, and Tankard (Lock Stock and Barrel)
Drinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
17:25
Make a Swill Save
gross (But also, I'm smiling about it)
@SPavel booo get that non-pun junk outta here!
Rumours and Humours
On second thought. I don't want to drink humours
Incidentally - why are dwarves associated with ale? Dwarves don't have space for agriculture, or sunlight for that matter.
(Sorry)
Thieves can't find a better tavern.
17:28
Dwarves should be, at best, distilling rotgut out of mushrooms
@SPavel because you have to keep the beer in the dark
@SPavel clearly that is why they drink so much when they go above ground.
@SPavel Because... uh... that only applies to non-dwarven ale? And dwarven ale doesn't require sunlight, because it's distilled from... rocks
@MikeQ Mushroom ale according to dwarf fortress
@MikeQ moss, fungus, other things that don't require sunlight.
17:29
@MikeQ You definitely don't want to know what it is distilled from.
Also - I imagine that drow distill vodka from potatoes stolen when they grow into the drow's surface tunnels
Drow & Your Troubles
Maybe dwarves just look like barrels so ancient people assumed their blood was ale and the dwarves liked that idea so now they drink tons
@goodguy5 Things I want to avoid
@SirCinnamon then come on in!
17:33
On a serious note, dwarves are big traders (according to the Players handbook) so they probably just trade for ale
@DavidCoffron hahaha that sounds like one of those old German fairy tales
@DavidCoffron Weird. I've always thought they were very loyal and wouldn't betray anyone.
@Englishinventors damn you for all your homophones
woah, careful of bigotry like that
P.s. inventors of English-language notninventors of English dissent
17:35
My favorite fantasy drink is Dwarven Stout, because the pun never goes bad. And IIRC, it spawns naturally in mines, with the glass pitcher and all.
actually, on a serious (well, on topic) note......
I've got a bunch of new players starting Saturday, and I want to find/compile a list of newbie pitfalls for 5e
@MikeQ It might go bad, but Stout Dwarves don't know the word poison
@goodguy5 Always know what your character's options are, even if you don't fully understand how they all work
17:37
Biggest pitfall imo is to get too bogged down in your own character rather than the story as a whole. It can ruin the fun for others and I think for yourself as well
@goodguy5 Try to work together, keep metagame knowledge or issues outside of the game
Never play a Gnome... like ever (unless you want to)
For character creation, 5e is quite railsy for the first few levels, so it's hard to build yourself into a corner
Don't assume multiclassing will work out without planning ahead (hello my lvl 3 monk dippers without any ki)
@goodguy5 I probably should have asked - What kind of pitfalls? Like gameplay for a single session, or more long-term stuff like character planning?
17:42
Multiclassing is a fickle beast
@MikeQ just stuff that's hard for newbies to tabletop. but like concept stuff.
The main things I've thought of are reminders that you can interact with the world and how rolling works.
Emphasize that they shouldn't really got overwhelmed by the mechanics. They just need to tell you what they want to do and you'll make it work and probably explain how you did it (if appropriate).
good point
I'd also recommend as DM not to front-load the rules. Give a quick general overview then address each rule as they come up.
yes. I'm also trying to keep that in mind
But I'm not sure what should be in the "quick overview"
There's a show called Harmonquest that is very entertaining, and is also a great example of how to run a coherent tabletop RPG without giving the mechanics too much attention
17:47
@goodguy5 Abilities and what they mean generally. The concept of the d20 and how it is used it most of the interactions. Maybe a couple big mechanical things from classes.
@Rubiksmoose the old "strength is smashing a tomato" thing?
@goodguy5 Pretty much.
cool
Do make sure that if you are introducing the rules slowly that you don't get into a situation where a rule they did not know about is going to kill them for example lol
As much as possible anyways
@DavidCoffron why not?
17:51
@goodguy5 Following Rubik's comment, you can delay introducing some rules until they come up
ah, that reminds me of I think the last thing I want to put on this list.
5. You can retreat
Speaking of puns and drinks
@goodguy5 and, more generally, that attacking is not always the best solution
@SPavel I don't get the peach one
Also, for completely new players, I try to frame DND more like "cooperative storytelling" and less like a video game with dice
17:54
@NautArch Gnomes are annoying to adjudicate because of Minor Illusion. I'll deal with it but it's frustrating. Same problem I have with School of Illusion wizards or Illusion spells in general
They just aren't well ruled out in 5e
cool. thanks, guys! 😊
@NautArch I find that my new players get frustrated because their illusions don't work like they want them to
@DavidCoffron heck I get frustrated both as player and DM with illusions.
@goodguy5 It says "James and the Giant" in tiny text on top, so the whole name is James and the Giant Peach Schnapps
@SPavel ah. Couldn't see it.
17:56
@DavidCoffron I love illusion spells, they let you get out of so many things without fighting.
@GreySage Agreed. Enchantment is the one that I struggle with most. I can never seem to use Suggestion properly, and Confusion and Dominate cause too much frustration when used against PCs.
@MikeQ Well that is because it is very unclear what the proper use of it actually is IMO. That is a very ambiguously written spell.
The proper use is to spark arguments about what is reasonable
There is no in-game use
@MikeQ i personally dont mind when my chadacter gets dominated. But I'm the kind who wouldn't mind just sitting on the side making jokes, while most people want to actually play the whole time
(Don't get me wrong though. I make a mean party member in combat. I know my way around a tactical plan)
