@Shalvenay Greyhawk's on a planet too.
In the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game, Oerth is the fictional planet on which one of the earliest campaign settings, the World of Greyhawk, is located. Oerth has an axial tilt of 30 degrees, which would cause greater seasonal temperature variation than on Earth, were it not for wizardly and divine magic that shifts weather patterns to be more favorable to the populace (at least the god-fearing folks). == Development == Castle Greyhawk was the most famous dungeon in Oerth, the home campaign world of Gary Gygax. Players in the earliest days of this campaign mostly stayed within Castle Greyhawk...
@SevenSidedDie huh. oh, right. it wasn't flat
it was geocentric, thx :P
@Shalvenay I think there was a flat one though, but I can't recall which. Apart from the non–Material Plane ones, that is.
That's what I thought, too. But if it's not Mystra or Oerth I'm stuck on my recollection of worlds from early days. (Not that I ever, at that age, compiled a strong understanding of what was going on anyways.) And my old books are at the office....
Hi there Shalvenay
@TimGrant how're things going?
00:19
Good. So my son just got accepted to a college, and the acceptance letter mentioned his role-playing gaming. No joke.
How are things going for you?
@nitsua60 Yeah, I think it was, but now I have to go and look at my notes.
@SevenSidedDie Pretty Sure that Krynn isn't flat ... but I've been out of touch with that lore for a while ...
@TimGrant Grats Tim, and that's a cool acceptance letter. :)
Thanks, I was especially proud of my young Dungeon Master. I knew there was a reason I leant him my copy of B-1 Into the Unknown. ;) ... and now it's almost time to log into roll20.
00:38
@TimGrant LOL! things are OK here. taking a Chultan half-elf for a whirl. :>
I started making up a Full Plate Wizard (alchemy background of course) for a gaming weekend we've got coming up.
@TimGrant what system?
DND 5e. Wizard + a couple levels of War Cleric
@TimGrant XD
yeah -- in 5e, it's not terribly hard
"arcane spell failure? wuzzat?"
Not as easy as it was in Red Box days.
00:44
ah. how did it work back in those days?
It was easy: "Armor: a magic-user may not wear any kind of armor, and may not use a shield." [redbox book 1 p.37, emphasis in the original]
@nitsua60 :P
@nitsua60 that did not apply to elves
@TimGrant Right. But they're not magic-users. They're just Elves =D
10th level maximum losers.
00:51
And Elves can't become Wizards, because that's not a title they ever acquire on the elf-table =)
yeah, mixing the notions of "race" and "class" was one of the worst mistakes of prehistoric D&D
At the very least it has unfortunate implications
Very unfortunate
^old news, but strangely relevant to this chat
(trogdor isn't old news, and is quite reasonably relevant to this chat)
00:54
Oh no! He has nukes now!?!!?!
Has had for some time!
@Magician very sweet of you to qualify the statement
FR lore question: what time of day do Corellonites prefer to pray at?
High elf noon?
@TimGrant heheheheheh
00:59
@Shalvenay elelfin
@nitsua60 seems legit
Twelven, surely
@nitsua60 oh boy, lulz
@Magician well, sure, if you're devout.
=)
@Shalvenay, as bad as "race as class" was, after all these years I still feel like the truly elfiest elf has a longsword, armor, and can cast Magic Missile.
01:19
@TimGrant as long as they don't get too cocky about their existence :P
01:43
also, what sorts of magical beasts in Chult would be associated with Lurue?
02:03
@Shalvenay All of them? That's her portfolio, after all.
@TimGrant me, too. As long as it's light(ish) armor. Because they're a wispy sort.
@Miniman I mean -- I'm trying to figure out what sorts of goodly magical beasts Chult has :)
What's meant by "magical beasts"?
I feel like 5e beasts are pretty unmagical by classification.
@nitsua60 whatever category unicorns get shoved in (they're the stereotypical thing associated with Lurue)
In 3.5, "magical beast" was an actual creature subtype.
02:07
@Shalvenay celestial, in that case.
@nitsua60 ah, so they moved to celestial in 5e, but yes, @BESW is correct, sorry about that...
They were the catch-all for "more intelligent and/or have supernatural powers but still mostly animal-like."
Fey gets you blink dogs and brownies...
Displacer beast is a monstrosity...
I feel like "magical beast" overlaps some but not all of monstrosity/fey/elemental/aberration/celestial, maybe.
coatl is celestial
Yeah, in 3.5 most of those subtypes indicated an extraplanar origin that "magical beast" didn't.
another question -- if you wanted to paint a big gaggle of Chultans of various shades, what all shades of paint would you need?
(think Port Nyanzaru crowd scene)

1 hour later…
03:39
hey there @Joshua, welcome to the RPG.SE lair :)
and hey again @TimGrant

7 hours later…
10:37
My African buffalo character has a small, homicidal oxpecker as her anger translator. https://twitter.com/RebelsHeart/status/978436724048109568
11:35
morning nerds
hey there, how're things going?
good. Another day in paradise.
11:51
But how can you play tabletop games if you only have a pair of dice
heh
just have 2 d24
that'll get you everything you need
You're right, I should have asked how you can play DND specifically. I think most d100 systems can be played in paradise.
like I said, 2 d24 will get you there
24 is divisible by 4/6/8/12
reroll 21-24 for 10/20

2 hours later…
13:25
@MikeQ d20 and d6 are all you need
@SPavel why?
@goodguy5 d20 because it is the best die, d6 because you gotta roll something for weapon damage
@SPavel Then why not a d20 and a d8?
@goodguy5 d8 is a garbage die
d6 has a deeply satisfying cubeness
it's confident, it knows what it wants to be
meanwhile, d8 is a ridiculous double pyramid ensemble
13:32
@goodguy5 delet this
d4 is the worst though
and for what it's worth, d12 is my favorite.
@SPavel no. you're stuck with that knowledge
@Rubiksmoose caltrops from hell
@SPavel I've come to love my d8 because of my paladin.
13:33
Sunday knight, our paladin (level 3) got a crit on a fiend.

Boy, was he excited.
rolling 12 of them on a critical is a lot of fun :)
8d8+3 at level 1, aint bad
@goodguy5 um, how did he get to 8d8?
1d8 for longsword
2d8 for smite
1d8 for fiend

critical
ah, the longsword.
13:34
I think he rolled in the high 40s
But, it's safe to say that schmuck demon died in a radiant blaze
Paladins are by far my favourite class fantasy
@goodguy5 and they roll like absolute crap.
@goodguy5 We fought some protector demon during our last battle and I stepped in with a crit and dropped it with a 105hp damage roll.
I have a d12 that is marked with 1-4 that I use as my d4 :)
dropped a 4th level smite on him.
13:38
dice arena/tower will aleviate that some

I've seen the twelve-sided d4 and always forget to buy one.
@NautArch yea. 14d8 will do that to a guy lol
@goodguy5 It was a nice paladin moment for me. Followed up by killing the demon king's heir in front of him (but first taunting the king to come out of hiding so he can watch his son die), and then nearly killing the king on the same turn (had to wait one more round when he had a chance to hit me with a strike that ended up cursing me unbenknownst to mea nd preventing a long rest after the fight :( )
Ben
Ben
Good day period to all those closer to the UTC timezone
@Rubiksmoose Honestly I need to try that... I dare say it would at least feel like it rolls better
any d4 "rolls" if you throw it hard enough
oof. they're 8 bucks for 4 (the twelve sided d4)
or 6 dice for $9
added to cart
hmm, that's pretty cool.
@goodguy5 You can use a d12 to sub for a d4; 1-3 = 1, 4=6 = 2; 7-9 = 3; 10-12 = 4. That way the die actually rolls. I had a d12 years ago that I had painted in the numbers with gold meaning 4, silver meaning 3, copper meaning 2 and the original ebony/black meaning one with the above scheme. (Testors metallic paints for the win).
13:50
@KorvinStarmast I know I CAN do that.
Ben
Ben
But do I WANT to...
:P
@KorvinStarmast As mentioned earlier, I have a d24 that I occasionally use for other dice.
It's a way to get the die to roll Not required.
@goodguy5 The d24 is not symmetrical, so not (to me) desirable.
@Ben If you're near north philly, I'll sell you one of mine when they come in ;)
@KorvinStarmast in what way is it not symmetrical?
Ben
Ben
@goodguy5 I honestly think I could not be farther from hha
13:52
It's as symmetrical as a cube
@Ben oh well
Ben
Ben
14:05
@goodguy5 The faces aren't.
@Ben they have the exact same degrees of symmetry as a cube.
Ben
Ben
each side is either a kite, isosceles triangle, or an irregular pentagon
@goodguy5 what, 360 degrees?
it's just a cube, where each face is raised.
you can still make a horizontal and vertical line through the shape, as well as diagonal lines
Ben
Ben
I (and I think perhaps Korvin as well) were thinking of these types of d24
oh goodness, no.
14:09
@goodguy5 I have found a solution that will satisfy both glorious d6 orthodoxy and your hideous d24 heresy
A hypercube has 24 square faces, while remaining a pleasing cube.
this d24 is symmetrical:
https://www.tarquingroup.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/1/A/1A-UM4K-L7CY_l_2.jpg

I agree with your hatred of the kite faces
In geometry, a tetrakis hexahedron (also known as a tetrahexahedron, hextetrahedron, tetrakis cube, and kiscube) is a Catalan solid. Its dual is the truncated octahedron, an Archimedean solid. It also can be called a disdyakis hexahedron or hexakis tetrahedron as the dual of an omnitruncated tetrahedron. == Orthogonal projections == The tetrakis hexahedron, dual of the truncated octahedron has 3 symmetry positions, two located on vertices and one mid-edge. == Uses == Naturally occurring (crystal) formations of tetrahexahedra are observed in copper and fluorite systems. Polyhedral dice shaped like...
oh huh. a d6 with four-sided pyramids for its faces.
its this one i think
Ben
Ben
@goodguy5 Ohhhhhh
14:10
@SirCinnamon yes. that is the one
"Tetrakis Hexahedron" sounds like an ancient artifact of power
little bit
Something the Avengers would try to keep from Darkseid
Ben
Ben
While, significantly more pleasing, still, technically not equilateral :P
@Ben significantly more pleasing
14:12
@SPavel twitch
Ben
Ben
Corrected haha
@SirCinnamon Seconded :P
Well, my job is done. The offspring had her shots today, and just need to keep an eye on her temp every few hours.
Am off to bed now. Can say I learned something here today
o/
@SirCinnamon What?
@SPavel The Avengers dont keep a ton from darkseid I think
@SirCinnamon Oh, did I confuse Marvel and DC
who's the Darkseid in Marvel
14:18
Right, Thanos
I'm guessing is who you were thinking of
They are basically the same though
Oh for sure
My second guess was going to be "Apokolips" but I think that's just the planet Darkseid is from, which would be even more wrong.
There is Apocalypse in marvel though
and Doomsday in DC
14:19
At least Thanos is a decent name though, this joker is a bad guy literally named Dark Side from the planet Apocalypse
Up there with General Grievous for worst name
Then again, Dr. Doom...
@SirCinnamon are those 4 of the same guy, or 4 different guys?
@SPavel If youre bringing star wars into it youve dug into a well of awful names
@SirCinnamon Savage Opress
4 Different guys, 2 marvel and 2 DC i think
@SPavel Darth Andeddu (Undead-u)
that was real funny
14:43
I know that AL only lets you choose one additional book, but is that a tiering?
I've never seen that used that way, but from what I gather, it's not a core book, but a book to be used within the rules that don't change much.anything.
so, Tier one would be phb/dmg/mm
tier two is volo and xtg
not sure what is tier 3...
burn
@NautArch I've seen a lot of people with very strongly held opinions on tiers that they basically made up
I had a guy tell me that in 3.5, only Core + Completes was official
Then he was upset when I laughed in his face
@SPavel Tier two being supplements like volos, xtg, swrod coast, elemental evil?
14:47
But to answer seriously, I also have never seen "tier" used in 5e outside of the "Tiers of Play" model.
@NautArch 5e doesn't even have enough books to have plausible tiers
3.5 at least had a metric ton of books to pick from
@SPavel Nevertheless, SCAG would be tier 3.
Actually, "Core + Completes" would be a great ban list.
@nitsua60 wuh?!
why would SCAG be tier 3 vs elemental evil/xanathar/volo?
I actually agree with SCAG being tier 3
but I'd put elemental there, as well
14:49
Because all of its playable options are now subsets of other materials.
"Scag" sounds like an insult
You scag
Scag off
scag me right round baby right round
Not bad. 8/10 solid swear.
Off the top of my head, doesn't XGtE contain everything playable from both SCAG and EEPC? (Except the EEPC races, which are in Volo.)
@nitsua60 ah, but wouldn't it just be parallel tier 2? Why degrade it if hte options are the same? I mean, it'd be silly to choose it if all of it is another book that gives you more, but seems like a legit tier 2 (if we do real tiers)
14:50
I.e. WotC went ahead and made SCAG and EEPC redundant for their players.
Ugh, sure glad I bought the digital version of SCAG, then :(
@NautArch Because the book that contains SCAG-playable is a superset of SCAG.
Personally, I consider "core only" to be an obscene restriction in content.
Gotta run to class. Go ahead and sort this out while I'm afk =)
The core books came out first, they were written when the designers had the least experience with the new rule set and the least knowledge about what works.
It would be like saying, let's use Windows but updates are banned
14:52
I like "core only" for new players
We'll support Chrome, but only version 1
@goodguy5 Why? Nobody is stopping the new players from only reading core content.
because they tend to get overwhelmed by options.
"you. core only. If there's something that you want that you can't achieve with that, then talk to me and we'll work it out"
@SPavel Eh, it's more like "use Chrome with no extensions".
😍
With the exception of Ranger, I think core only is perfectly viable. It's not Windows updates where you'd be missing critical security updates.
14:54
🔨 I forgot about this ascii extension I have in chrome.
Nailed it
@goodguy5 Again - they can choose to read only Core.
@SPavel yea. and I'm making that choice for them
@goodguy5 Your players are not children, they won't break down and cry because there are too many books to read.
@SPavel Speak for yourself, I'm like mentally five years old.
Look, I don't know how many times you've tried to show your wife or your friends' wife feats from 4 different books, but I've done it enough to know better
14:57
werds r hard
@goodguy5 My dude
You're right, they're not children. They're more like cats that need to be herded
You cannot say "oh players will get confused because of too many books" and then turn around and give them more books
Leave them to their own devices, to learn about the game at their own pace
@SPavel That's EXACTLY my point
I know that they get confused because I've been there. I've learned and now? Core only
@goodguy5 They were confused because you confused them
It's your fault and your solution is a bad one.
14:59
alright scag off
shrug
Look, if someone new asks me about "this thing in volo's guide", or whatever, I'm not going to shut them down, I'm going to have a conversation about it.
@goodguy5 But why would they ever read it? You banned it.
I think something has been lost in translation here.
Unless you are secretly a high school principal, in which case your students will immediately read everything that you have banned
15:02
"Newbie. Here's the core book. I think you should stick to this. If this doesn't meet your needs, talk to me and we'll figure something out."
And I wish I was a high school principle. I'd rule with an iron fist
@goodguy5 That's what every high school principal thinks
My teachers wouldn't have guns, just in case they want to revolt
I'd have the guns
And whoever the dumbest/loyalest kids are.
Not sure if you are joking or not but you might want to dial back a few dozen steps
@goodguy5 ... I think you have a mistaken perception of what a principal does.
100% joking
I was making fun of the "give teachers guns" sentiment.
15:06
Hey man, there are serious talks about arming teachers and principals "solving" school shootings by demanding kids wear transparent backpacks.
It's not a great joke.
fair
Satire/parody doesn't exist post-2016.
No, there's a lot of great satire, but normalizing "guns in schools" is not that.
15:07
At this point, the Onion is basically just reporting the news.
theoretically, I don't mind the transparent backpacks. But we have other social problems to solve before we can do that
If your idea of good satire is/was The Onion, you need to get out more
@SPavel Why are you so adversarial?
@Yuuki Builds character.
@SPavel Whether you thought it was good or bad, for a lot of its history it was "here's something that's funny largely because that couldn't really happen." That... doesn't really hold in a lot of places anymore.
15:09
Obviously, the best solution is to teach children to harness their Stand powers at a young age
@nitsua60 What's happening with politics today is far from unprecedented. In the history of the US, armed mobs have literally stormed and dispersed lawfully elected progressive assembles.
The difference is that now we have Buzzfeed.
Yep. The world is as chaotic as it always has been. What changes is that we're more perceptive to it.
@MikeQ Clearly, this divergence into politics is the work of an enemy Stand.
Hmm... I wonder this works with preformatted lines...
@SPavel Sure, but in the context of The Onion we're talking about a much narrower time-window. During the time The Onion has been in publication there are things they'd have been able to joke about easily before which are now harder/impossible to write jokes about.
15:13
@MikeQ Most Stand users we know of are evil

THIS MUST BE THE WORK OF AN ENEMY 「STAND」!!

Nope.
@SPavel All Stand users are horrific sociopaths when you meet them. Then they become your best friend, and you conveniently forget about the time(s) they tried to murder you and/or several dogs.
That's what it's supposed to look like.
@MikeQ Avdol wasn't a horrific sociopath, also that kid in Part 4, also the chef in part 3
But that is basically it, I think
Joseph got over being a horrific sociopath before he got his Stand
Then Kakyoin and Polnareff were sort of ok?
But yeah basically even the good guys are terrible people
Like the time we first meet Josuke, where he disfigures a person's entire face for life just because he made fun of Josuke's ridiculous steak-shaped haircut
IIRC Kakyoin was introduced as a creepy homicidal puppetmaster, who forced various bystanders to attack Jotaro
15:20
@MikeQ Yeah but that was because of the flesh bud
Pretty sure he made the school nurse stab herself with a scalpel for no reason other to reestablish his creepiness
Technically that was a different person since real Kakyoin wasn't in control
Which is a shame because Hierophant Green's possession power is by far its strongest move, and IIRC it was never used again
@SPavel True. We thought it was the creepy schoolboy, but it was me, Dio!
@MikeQ don't bring my paladin into this (named him Diomedes)
@NautArch The same paladin that tortured some guy's son because he was the villain?
15:30
@MikeQ The villain and his son were both fiends. And I didn't torture him. I crushed his skull in.
@NautArch Paladins should generally avoid having anything to do with skulls
Also, why do fiends have skulls? Or bones?
A fiend is pure atomic evil that has convinced you it's taken the shape of a creature.
@SPavel fiends have skulls as a gentleman's agreement to all other sentient creatures. It's really gratifying to crush one's skull it.
@goodguy5 If I were a fiend, I would configure my body plan to be as unsatisfying to kill as possible, out of spite
A sort of mushy, jelly-like consistency...wait, that's already how it is.
@SPavel you'd better be upper management then, because otherwise your boss is going to be on your tail about not being fun enough for him to kill
@goodguy5 That is why I also won't have a tail
Also no back, so I can't be backstabbed.
15:36
yea, you're definitely getting a fine from the demon affairs council
Like this, all front.
@goodguy5 Demons are Chaotic, they wouldn't have a council and if they had, wouldn't respect its authority
Yea, you say that until one of them fillets your bones and shoves the shards back into your bones
And if I were a devil, I would challenge the fine and drag out the legal battle in court for centuries
@goodguy5 No bones!
Maybe a gaseous form would be best. Can a gas be mushy?
Sort of like walking into a spider web
Could someone explain to me the position that newer tabletop players should have fewer choices?
Also instead of treasure I'd have those religious pamphlets where the corner looks like a $20 bill but when you pull it out, it's an ad for Jesus
15:41
I have no idea what they actually were, just that they were fiends. We had set it on fire, but none of us knew if it actually hurt it (really bad perception rolls)
@MikeQ "Hey, maybe try chocolate or vanilla ice cream before you get too into the weeds with bubblegum pistachio."
@NautArch Setting something on fire is its own reward
@Yuuki I had whiskey ice cream over the weekend. Three different ones.
@SPavel jealous
@SPavel It really kinda was :) And the fire elemental did give me flanking for advantage. ANd that's really all I wanted.
@SPavel Bubblegum pistachio whiskey?
15:43
It was so good
your ice cream was melting
@NautArch Not for long
@Yuuki So in other words, it assumes that everything in core is easier to learn than any option outside of core?
@MikeQ Easier, better balanced, closer to the "flavor" of the game, more orthodox and pure in general
@MikeQ Not so much that as it is the assumption that every option outside of core builds on top of core.
15:46
The cult of Core is more powerful than the cult of the natural 1
tl;dr core-only is the belief that unearthed arcana is "what if subclasses but too much"
Yeah, i'm not getting this core argument. The additional materials are just as valid as the original.
Does that mean that the other players and the campaign material should also be limited to core? What does the new player do when they interact with another player who is using non-core materials?
Dark Mirror, D&D edition
@MikeQ "player" or "character"?
15:48
@goodguy5 White die, line between 21 and 24
@MikeQ Typically, core-only applies to an entire campaign.
In my experience, at least.
@Yuuki Is there a difference between Core and Original?
So all players play using core books.
@KorvinStarmast how is that different between the line between 2 and 3 on a d6?
@NautArch No, they are not, even though some people try really hard to fit that square peg into a round hole. The tiers of adventure are as close to "tiers" as 5e gets.
15:51
I can't really get on board with this idea that new players would necessarily be more overwhelmed by non-core material. It's not like new players need to read the rulebooks in publication order as a prereq for joining their first DND campaign.
@MikeQ yes, but the core rule book has all the things they'll need to start.
The players don't need to know the ins and outs of all the rules. That's the DM's job.
@goodguy5 Actually, they only need the basic rules - they don't even need the PHB.
@NautArch true
isn't that a chink in the Core armor?
15:53
All a new player needs to know are 1. the basic goals and patterns of the game, like how you use d20 rolls to attempt things, and 2. the basic features of what their character is capable of doing
@NautArch Regarding that linked comment, that's the exact problem I have with the Hex Warrior subclass. It feels like they're fixing the blade pact Warlock with a supplementary subclass rather than actually fixing the class feature.
right. The basics of all characters are in the core book.
My point is that the players shouldn't need to read the entire book before playing
And if the DM can explain things well, the new players might not need to read the book at all
"Entire" book? No. But they should understand what skills and abilities do. They should know what the conditions are. How rests work.
What happens on levelup
Not when they start playing, they don't
15:57
@MikeQ I think the idea is that in a system that isn't rules light (and D& isn't rules light taken as a whole) the operating theory is crawl/walk/run. That is what I think is behind it.
@MikeQ Core can be easily ignored by constantly asking the DM "can I do <the thing>?".
The DM shouldn't have to explain eveything about the character's side of "the screen". He should be concerned with how the base mechanics of the game work and what his monsters do, and how the world works.
@goodguy5 I just realized that this was already discussed a bit under the picture, not wasting any more time on it.
@Yuuki To be fair, you should be asking that anyway..
@Yuuki I was typing a counter to this, but realized this is what it's about. PLayers ask the DM about doing something, DM tells them yes/no and what to roll.
15:58
"Can my class do this?" is a bad question.
but the more players know, the more interesting things they can try and do.
Player describes what he wants to do, DM decides what the player should roll.
and then they come here or forums and find things they would never have even thought of
@goodguy5 Why is that bad?
> "I want to cast Fireball."
> "You're... a barbarian. Roll Arcana?"
15:59
Better: describe what they want todo, DM explains how to make it happen mechanically
@Yuuki Roll grapple to pick up & aim the wizard
@MikeQ Because it's not the DM's job to know what your class does. That's YOUR job.
@goodguy5 DM absolutely must know what the player's class does, in order to make encounters that work for that class. But I suppose we had that conversation already.
