6:01 PM
@NautArch almost 2 years ago I built my first custom PC, and I took about 3 months to pick out all the parts and learn what everything did/how it fit together.
A lot of time was spent on Wikipedia

@NautArch I'll admit that picking out parts is very daunting, but putting stuff together is very easy and I'm a little annoyed that my sister refused to do even that.

@GreySage i haven't built one in a few years, but can scramble pretty quickly now to pull together parts. NOt sure if he's doing much OC on it, but it'll be ready for it if he does.
@Yuuki It only took me about 2 hours to get the parts list together. I only got slowed down by the Kaby Lake processor not playing nice with some of the mobos.

@Yuuki Putting it together is the fun part. It's the payoff for all the work done selecting parts.

Once upon a time, motherboards were as good as the micro was, and it was measured in increasing numbers (was it frquency?)
Now, give me a octacore, a dual, whatever you have and analisys paralisys will eat me alive.
And this feeling is slowly killing me.
I tought I was good at this informatics thing but it turns out I'm really not (and not wanting to buy anything new before the old parts break [because I'm stingy] is making me even more of a dinosaur)

Yeah, after octacores i pretty much dont care anymore.

6:16 PM
@GreySage Yes, but I'm hung up on both the semantics and intent of "help me build a gaming PC" and then peacing out and refusing to do anything until I do all the work.
I'm glad that's not the case with @NautArch and his nephew-in-law.

@Yuuki Indeed

@Yuuki more like "help build me a gaming PC" (add some punctuation)?

If anybody needs help validating a PC configuration, feel free to drop me a line. It's part of what I do for a living. :)
2

@Zachiel More like just "build me a gaming PC".

@Yuuki Quote all the prices as twice what they really are, and build one for yourself, too. :)

6:35 PM
I find it a bit unfair that new users who ask questions that are likely to be redirected in chat don't actually get the privilege to join us here in chat.
Good day to everyone, btw.

@Baskakov_Dmitriy we could theoretically invite them but once we tried and I don't think it worked. @BESW maybe recalls this?
Anyhow, it's a measure to prevent spammers from just coming in and spam

I would make it so before they get 30 rep, they are only allowed to talk if invited.
In a specific room

@Baskakov_Dmitriy There would need to be backend support for it; it'd be a site-wide thing, not just for RPG.se.

I understand that.
That's probably why we can't do it.

@T.J.L. elected moderators have the ability to add a user manually to a room's read/write access lists; I wonder if moving that ability to all chat moderators (10K+) would help?

6:39 PM
adding, yes, but is that a seperate permission from removing?

@godskook What do you mean?

@T.J.L. it's been awhile and probably should get a validation :)

I mean that those two permissions are often the same permission
And adding the ability to remove people from a chat room has some really dicey abuse cases that you may not want to deal with.

@godskook Aah... yes. I'm following you now.

@Baskakov_Dmitriy Also why we try and give upvotes on questions to bump their rep to chat-level.

6:41 PM
So I'm just asking, are those two permissions bundled here?

@godskook That's a good question. Because, of course, Room Owners (who need not be 10K+ nor need be elected) have "kick" ability. But in the back-end I don't know how those things are handled.

@Baskakov_Dmitriy New users should be directed to discussion rooms not any sort of main chatroom, imo.
And when you create a discussion room with another user, said user typically has write access and therefore doesn't need rep to talk.

@Yuuki Why don't we do it to every user then?

The pain-point that often comes up is that a <20 user can be presented the "comments are not for extended discussion, would you like to move this to chat?" link but then discover, on clicking it, that the system doesn't let them create the room.

Room-owners are rarer and if you want to allow semi-private rooms, its often more appropriate for that purpose. As far as general access for 10k+ people, I'm not making an argument here, I'm pointing out the possible bundled decision and making sure you consider it within your own knowledge-base.

6:44 PM
@Baskakov_Dmitriy Why does every new user need to be able to chat? Remember that chat is both not the main function of SE or really even supposed to be a part of SE's function.

@godskook Yeah--if they're bundled in that way we certainly wouldn't want to open the floodgates on "ban any user I want from this room" permissions.

@nitsua60 So... backend support for doing it manually already exists. :)

but only elected mods--which is probably (IMO) a too-small set to achieve what I assume @Baskakov_Dmitriy is going for.

@nitsua60 I don't remember the exact thresholds... are no-chat users also no-comment users?

@T.J.L. Commenting on your own Q/A is always allowed

6:50 PM
Chat is 20, "comment everywhere" is 50. GreySage's right abot one's own posts. rpg.stackexchange.com/help/privileges

@GreySage Right, so... if comments get to the point where it's likely to be an issue, there's probably more user-education required anyway.

(I remember getting "comment everywhere." Whoo-ee, the world was wide open.)

I personally don't see a reason to make chat a base privilege, but I'm weird.

@nitsua60 Yes, that made things much easier

Plus I'm sure I would've had a much different opinion when I was younger.

6:54 PM
@Yuuki Have you ever commented on a new user's question where you see good things, but things that really need work, and after a few comments just thought "man, this'd be easier to workshop in chat, then just make one edit to 'fix' the question"?
(I assume that's the sort of experience @Baskakov_Dmitriy was thinking of, and is certainly one I've had.)

@nitsua60, is it possible to edit someone's Q/A without using the "accepted immediately" privilege?

Hello all. Quick question. Is it wrong to edit questions simply to add hyperlinks for certain spells/abilities for easier reference?

Once I soon unlock that.
@A.B., hyperlinks to where?

@A.B. nope.

@A.B. As long as you are referring to a legal source, it's usually not a problem.

6:55 PM
@godskook you mean the 2000 rep milestone?

@nitsua60 yes

@nitsua60 That's what discussion rooms are for. We use them every now and then on Arqade.

@godskook Yes you can edit, but they need to be approved for other people to see them

For example: Adding a hyperlink to roll20 for the spell scent when the OP didn't add a description/hyperlink of the spell

@A.B. On the other hand, if it's just adding in those links it doesn't seem like a terribly substantial edit. If its a newish question that's not a problem, but if you've got a bunch of old ones you want to do this to...?

6:56 PM
@Yuuki Is a discussion room different from a chat room?

They are newish questions @nitsua60

@godskook So you can make the edits, but they still have to be approved.
@A.B. Why link to R20 rather than the particular system's SRD? (Also, what's the system?)

@GreySage They're basically chatrooms between two people, often just made for the particular question in hand.

Work filter @nitsua60...so I guess a follow-up questions: Is roll20 a legal source?

6:58 PM
@Yuuki That does seem to fit the requirements, assuming low rep users can access them

@Yuuki But a user under 20 rep can't participate in the room created on their own question.

@nitsua60 I could've sworn you could create room for a discussion between you and a user and the user doesn't need 20 rep and has write access.

@nitsua60 oh didnt see last half...d&d 5e is the system

@A.B. One of the reasons for editting given in the priviledge is "to add related resources or hyperlinks"

Hmm... brb gonna sockpuppet test real quick.

6:59 PM
Editing to link to a reputable SRD site ~should~ be fine.

@A.B. Ah. Then I'd just make myself a note to do it later. I try to avoid 3rd-party sources when 1st-party are available, personally. (Even when the 1st-party in question makes it oh-so difficult to link to their things. Curse you, Wizards!!!)

@nitsua60 I have used roll20 several times...woopsie

@godskook So once you've got that privilege you'll be able to edit any post (unless locked, which is super-rare) at will. Post-author will get an inbox-notification of the edit.

@A.B. i approved your edit, but a link to paizo's PRD would have been a better choice there.

@nitsua60 Can I turn that privilege -off-?

7:01 PM
@A.B. I don't know it's necessarily a "woopsie," it's just my personal habit =)
@godskook Only by shedding rep. Award a bounty or two =D

Well that's obnoxious. While I appreciate the ability to make impunity edits, I'd also like to retain the ability to suggest an edit.

@A.B. there are some good links here:
5
Q: What is the policy on linking to non-official sites?

NautArchThis question references dnd-spells.com, which is not an official WoTC and property and has even been temporarily shut down by them in the past. What is the policy on these references?

@godskook under what circumstance do you wish that your edit wasn't auto-accepted?

Hey, I know the guy who asked that! :P

13
Q: Could I please have my privilege to edit without a peer review removed?

Baskakov_DmitriyI have hit the 2k-rep threshold recently, and hence my edits should now be automatically accepted without a peer review. However: My English, though fluent, is very far from perfect. I can't edit a post written by a native speaker if I don't want to spoil it by a stupid mistake, even if I have ...

7:04 PM
@Adam, by default? I'd much rather ask someone to accept my edits than just edit their posts.

Okay, looks like I was wrong and you can't create room between you and a <20 user. At least, you can't as a non-diamond user.

@godskook That's ^^ what I usually use comments for. "I'd suggest you make $THIS_EDIT, because I was confused by this part of your post."

@nitsua60, but that functionality already exists for me at this very moment. :(
As an edit tool

@nitsua60 But going back to this, if a comment thread goes long enough that you want to workshop in chat, that typically signifies a more complex problem and you should contact a diamond.

@Laura Since you have 25 rep now, you can go here in chat and we can brainstorm your concerns about different D&D editions.

7:06 PM
Looks like @Baskakov_Dmitriy has the solution--take a look at their rep-graph since posting that meta =)

I knew I remembered this coming up on meta before

@nitsua60 :3

@Baskakov_Dmitriy Typically you need to explicitly invite a person to a room before they'll get notified by @handling.

@Baskakov_Dmitriy Laura won't get a notification from that ping--she's not on the room's "recent users" list. I suggest you drop a comment on one of their posts.

@Adam yeah..... nitsua60 just linked that.

7:07 PM
@nitsua60 Thanks, will try that.

I've already cast disintegrate on it after realizing that I was an idiot

@Baskakov_Dmitriy (Also, looks like you're dangerously close to needing to award another bounty!)
=D

@nitsua60 Perhaps I will have another such a move of that graph soon, if I manage to finally finish my mega-research on Vampire: The Masquerade shooting builds.
The research is so big that after a month of not working on it I reread the whole AnyDice code and research text as if it was something new to me, lol

@godskook So are you thinking about the case where you'd like to go ahead and make the edit (do the leg-work, as it were, of formatting, typing out, finding references, &c.) in case OP wants it, then they can decide?

@Yuuki How do you invite someone to chat?

7:11 PM
@nitsua60 yeah

@GreySage I think you can do it from their Chat.SE profile.

@nitsua60 often, its easier for me to do the legwork of an edit than to EXPLAIN the edit.

@godskook But users need to be educated.

I guess that's what edit reasons are for.

7:13 PM
You often have to do both things.

@Baskakov_Dmitriy What's that got to do with the price of rice in china?

@godskook In that case it's not unheard-of for someone to make an edit then leave a comment that says "I made the edit which I think is in line with your intent, because it seemed easier to just do it than to suggest/explain it in comments. Please feel free to roll it back [rollback link here] if I failed to capture your meaning."

@Yuuki That only works if they are in chat already I think, I can't find that "invite to room" option on the rpg profile page

@GreySage Yeah, only chat-profile.

@nitsua60 yeah, I've got the work-arounds figured out, I'm just down to bemoaning the niche use-case issue.

7:16 PM
@GreySage I imagine that's the point, so users who prefer to avoid chat (they exist!) aren't badgered with invites to chat.

@godskook Obviously there's a whole set of intersection of considerations as to when that's appropriate including, at least, size/nature of edit, interaction with existing answers, the mood of OP when they see the edit, &c.

nwp
I don't know how to deal with this. Everything I can come up with is primarily opinion based and idea generation, yet it is a well received question.

@nitsua60 so from the post you linked, roll20 would be an acceptable, but not preferred, website to send links to

@nwp Not every close-able question is unpopular.

nwp
I remember balance questions being on-topic.

7:19 PM
@nwp It's asking if a specific house-rule/homebrew is balanced. One could compare it to similar abilities or feats

@A.B. Maybe? I'm not conversant enough in the PF-sphere to venture an opinion.

nwp
An honest answer would be that it doesn't matter, it would still be a terrible EI to take unless a situation has been crafted specifically for you to require that spell. And even then it would be a waste for the rest of the game.
But that sounds too much like a rant.

@nwp That sounds like a decent answer to me

nwp
Another answer would be that not all options must be balanced. Just because dropping your weapon and punching the dragon is a terrible idea doesn't mean that you need to buff up unarmed damage. It is part of the game to figure out which options are good and which are not.

@A.B. I can't imagine why you would link to roll20. To my knowledge, it's a place where people play, not a collection of rules. And any collection of rules made by random users in forum posts (which I imagine is what you would likn but again, it's just because I don't know any better) risks being some infringment of PF's OGL-equivalent.
@nwp Amen to that T_T

7:31 PM
@Zachiel R20 has a SRD-like rules compendium attached to it...
For D&D5E, I'd say the best option for linking is D&D Beyond.

@T.J.L. well if the compendium is reputable and follows the rules, why not? Maybe the only reason to avoid it would be that it might be short lived based on the life of the gaming place itself, but hey, that's how the whole Internet works.

@Zachiel It's an official WoTC product, so...

@T.J.L. I dunno... requires a login. If you're going to link, why not to the SRD itself with page indicated?
(Easy answer: because the moment we get a critical mass of links to the SRD here, WotC will completely rearrange their site in some completely-assed way.)

@T.J.L. oh wait

@nitsua60 Because it will reflect errata, and eventually be more complete than the SRD.

7:40 PM
roll20 is official?

In fact, all the PHB, DMG, and MM data is already in Beyond's database (it shows up on text-based searches), it's just blocked from actual viewing at the moment.
@Zachiel Not even close.

@T.J.L. Are you saying they're not updating the SRD with errata that the PHB/MM/DMG do include?

@nitsua60 I wouldn't expect them to, no. Honestly, I've never bothered to check because I don't find it a useful resource to begin with.

Alright, heading out, folks. Keep the place humming =)

@nitsua60 And probably not the best idea to HOPE that a 3rd party will keep up to date when you can directly cite written works.

7:43 PM
@NautArch How's WotC a 3rd party?

@nitsua60 Oh, i was talking about ROll20
sorry!

I'm pretty sure the d20pfsrd is pretty up to date with everything that they are allowed to publish: they want to keep their base of visitors, after all.

@Zachiel Hopefully, but it's kind of unnecessary trust. They aren't a WoTC property, so citing them is just once-removed from a true source.

@Zachiel I wouldn't be surprised if it included things they're not allowed to publish, either.

WotC, instead... well, there's speculation that the only thing that keeps the whole thing together is that they sell licenses to videogame makers, and they've been famous for removing content as soon as the new edition came out.

7:47 PM
The problem is that linking to WotC is fraught, also. Just cite the books, folks. Those, they'll be prying from our cold, dead hands.
(I leave you for the night with that delightful thought.)

@nitsua60 It'd be nice if they'd release quality PDFs of them, though...

@T.J.L. yeah it would. I hate not having a legal option to do something I want that others provide illegally (and often times in better quality.) Provide the service, do it right, and the money will come.

@nitsua60 The world will end when WotC releases killbot drones as part of their Monster Manual 3.0.

@NautArch In the past, I've done it myself. I take the book to Kinkos to have the binding sliced off, then run it through my scanner - it duplexes and has a sheet feeder.

@T.J.L. yeah, just haven't wanted to cut the binding off my PHB :)
@T.J.L. also, where can i send you my PC build for TJL of Approval?

8:00 PM
@NautArch I'd have no problem with that. The binding of my D&D 3.0 PHB kinda fell apart.

@NautArch Ha ha ha... Create a chat, maybe?

JWT
So the new UA is out, and it is SUCH a tease.

Ugh, taking turns already takes long enough when just basic initiative rules are used.
I don't see how this speeds things up at all.

JWT
Yeah. And then he implies it had something to do with Greyhawk!
My group played with these back in the day - like in '85 or so, but we soon dropped it.
They really bogged down the game. They were originally released in a Dragon Mag.
WHo gets the first swing - pg 23

it builds tables upon tables that you will have to check on during play, and claims it will make things faster ("without more work")?

JWT
Yeah. It's quite bold faced innit.

8:44 PM
I have run a game with low-to-high initiative and implicit interrupts available to people with higher scores, but it was all about air-to-air combat, so knowing where the enemy was moving to was very important. And of course, everybody was moving every turn. There was no option for remaining stationary.

May 5 at 1:19, by nitsua60
@JoelHarmon I prefer having both. Maybe someday WotC will even figure out that I'd prefer to pay them for that privilege.

@nitsua60 Indeed.

9:05 PM
Are houserules BOTH variant options listed in PHB/DMG AND stuff a table just makes up?

@BESW That's pretty hardcore.

@NautArch, for 3.5, I would call Gestalt a houserule.

But at the same time, the bird catcher tree doesn't seem to prey on birds.

Does that help?

@Yuuki Right. It accidentally covers itself with the decaying corpses of potential seed-propagators.

9:13 PM
@godskook was thinking more about 5e variant rules (flanking, magic item creation, etc.) THey're in the books, but they aren't "core."

How is that a distinction in your mind?

@BESW Yeah, so it's a weird entry for "Your Fantasy Plants Aren't Predatory Enough".
Maybe "Your Fantasy Plants Aren't Super Hardcore On Accident Enough".

@Yuuki I was thinking of it as a cat that doesn't eat its prey.

@godskook House is a rule that isn't based on anything in the books. Variants are still "official", just not always-on?

@NautArch, Gestalt is from Unearthed Arcana

9:15 PM
@BESW That's different as the cat still captures/kills prey for a specific reason. This case being its own enjoyment.

Its printed, albeit not 100% truly fleshed

@Yuuki The alternatives I came up with weren't pithy enough but I wanted to share it anyway?

@godskook Unearthed Arcana is playtest. TO me, that goes a bit more into houserule because it hasn't been fully vetted and published as final. Compare to Flanking - which is.
But I guess that would still lead me to say that any changes from Core (variant, UA, or table-decisions) would qualify as House Rule.

@BESW Oh it's pretty awesome and I would definitely like seeing similar stuff. I guess I like quibbling (hopefully unaggressively) over completely meaningless things.

I would say that anything you must specify for a character to be rules-legal in your game, but that could be left unspecified to play in another in-progress game is a houserule

9:20 PM
@Yuuki Enjoy‌.

@godskook So basically this?

Pretty much.

howdy @KorvinStarmast

Hello

what's the good word from Texas?

9:24 PM
Hot and humid, my wife's birthday today, and we start a diet regiment tomorrow.
So we binge tonight. Fat Monday. Lunes Gras?
Loony Grass?
In better news, we may even get to play two weeks in a row in our current campaign, which has been curtailed due to our DM's RL job and my brother getting behind on his running in the shared world.

@KorvinStarmast Did somebody say queso?

In curious news, I logged in today and saw exactly 40K rep, and then saw 4063 rep at Christianity.SE, which I guess means that RPG's are 10x as important to me as my faith. Hmm, pastor will not be pleased. :(
Actually, I'm grilling fish tonight, so we probably won't be quesoing much for a while. Using calcium and mag supplements while on the diet.

@KorvinStarmast I take mag supplements for my migraines. Not sure if they're doing anything.
My alt d&D game is running a 10 hour session on Sunday that I can't attend. Because I have a family. Darn kid-less players.

They helped us during our last low carb/low fat high protein diet.
@NautArch heh, such is the life of a parent. The pay off's OK, though.

@KorvinStarmast Yeah they are! I actually played catch with my 5 year old yesterday (throwing over-hand).

9:33 PM
Woo hoo, baseball with the kids can be a lot of fun. Go for it! I envy you.
Been years since my son and I played baseball.

9:49 PM
@KorvinStarmast Nah, it's just that your RPGs are 10x as important to others than is your faith. Still might not please your pastor, though =)
2

@nitsua60 That would put my witness at the wrong end of the bell curve, I suspect.
(Did you get the messages on why I could not respond to you in chat? )

Fairy 'nuff =)
@KorvinStarmast Yeah--I knew that'd be the case at the time. Just didn't want to belabor it.
(Also, running to the store quickly then grilling, myself. Afk a bit.)

see ya

10:06 PM
hey there @KorvinStarmast

@DragandDrop I would like that very much
btw @Zachiel what is the source for your avatar
and hey @Shalvenay

hey there @Skyler, how're things going?

mellow, just drowning into the Nier Automata OST and all its wonders
about to try and get back into working on some android, hbu?

not a whole lot

btw, ever made a high quality digital overworld map for a campaign

10:20 PM
@Skyler not really
I haven't done campaign stuff much for one in general
and for two
I have this habit of holding maps to rather...high standards re: accuracy

i guess that makes two of us, i dabbled in a few tools but honestly felt like I'll switch to photoshop/illustrator (if I ever learn how to use Ai)

@Shalvenay Howdy. How are you, Shal/

@KorvinStarmast alright here, as for you?

So far OK, wife's birthday, I am cooking fish on the grill as soon as I get hom.

@Skyler basically -- I object to the entire premise of "map as art object" that most fantasy/campaign mapmaking is driven by

10:23 PM
@Shalvenay you like it as a tool then?

if anything, I'd be finding some way to generate a decent DEM and hydrology and then drag it into QGIS and work from there placing the various ecotones and man-made features
the hangup there is finding a good random terrain gen approach that also suits having a hydrology generator laid over it
and can then produce output suitable for QGIS
the former exists
the latter is surprisingly painful because of the "unprojection" operation involved
we have this data source that was generated based on a flat map, now we need to unproject it back onto a geoid
(a slightly nutty Cartographer's Guild member tried to pull a chunk of Golarion into ArcGIS. he got the absurd result that the only way he could make things work was by telling ArcGIS to assume the world was flat.)

@Zachiel roll20 has a compendium similar to other d&d sites, and as explained before it is one of the very few d&d related sites that my work's web filter allows. Understanding that it is not as preferred as other, more "official" sites, it's better than nothing.
For all here in this room currently, ignore above

Ben
11:09 PM
Good day/evening/early morning period to all

hey there @Ben, how're things going?

Ben
Discussed my PC issues with the GM, got that sorted (he likes to "pick on player's weaknesses", and now understands that, at least in my case, do so with at least some form of a reason, not just because he can), and have learned that people are not capable of controlling motor vehicles.
3rd day in a row I have narrowly avoided a major vehicle accident

Hello friends!
Just found a useful resource for any D&D 5e players out there
A list of all class/subclass official combinations, and where to find them
Pretty neat-o :P

11:53 PM
@Skyler Downloaded ETOPO data from NOAA, plotted it in 3d, wallpapered that with satellite images from Google Earth, then overlaid layers with hexes, population density (by race), settlements, roads/trade routes; built tools for real-time visualization from any point in any direction. I've fallen down that particular rabbit hole. Hard.

@nitsua60 any pics to share

@nitsua60 you've pretty much written a buggy, half-baked ArcGIS then :P

@Shalvenay Prolly =)
@Skyler Sadly, haven't installed MATLAB on the new machine yet. (Changed over last week.) So I've got the .m files, but can't run them right now.
I suppose I could take a photo with phone of printout from years-old binder....

@nitsua60 We just use Google Maps and add our own labels for whatever fiction we're building as we build it.

@BESW That... would have been a lot easier. And was completely available when I was doing my project.

11:57 PM
(Somewhere I have map of the West Coast with all the changes mentioned in the Morts setting text.)

But I got hexes on my map =)
Problem is, when we kicked that campaign over from 2e to DW, I ditched a lot of the fine-detail stuff.
