@doppelgreener TBH I noticed this trait of your personality since quite a long time and it was the only reason why I didn't vote for you as a moderator. I'm glad you learned it, it can only make you a better mod !
@Magician In pathfinder there are a list of feats you will find one pretty much any monster from the bestiary, and some you will never find. Little game: can you name one monster without Improved Initiative?
@doppelgreener Well, you technically still "vote to close" it, but it's the kind of "one man, one vote" vote that Pratchett explained thusly: You are The Man, and you have The Vote.
@doppelgreener, I....really didn't see a problem with the snark in that situation. Maybe that's just me.
@AnneAunyme That is fair enough. I can definitely be pretty firm with people and that can come across as grumpy even when I'm not actually genuinely grumpy.
@godskook That I came across as snarky, and was probably genuinely being a bit snarky, is itself the issue. I would prefer a zero-snark policy for myself.
Moderators need to be someone community members can have a good accord with, and snark & grump put up obstacles between community members.
I see nothing wrong with the Angry-GM style of moderation, but since its your own moderation, you're entitled to pick your style.
@godskook snark is not always mandatory, but what is important is that when you need to be not snarky you 1) manage to not be snarky 2) people know you are not snarky
not being snarky at all is imho the simplest way to achieve that
14:32
> We generally expect that moderators:

- are patient and fair
- lead by example
- show respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
- are open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

-- https://rpg.stackexchange.com/help/site-moderators
I feel that being grumpy breaches those expectations of moderators, since we're looked to for setting part of the behaviour standard of the site. Also grump works against being patient and fair.
@doppelgreener Of all the grumpy people, you are remarkably constrained when actually grumpy.
@eimyr I do my best! Thank you.
@eimyr of all the nice people, you are a very nice one :)
> As a moderator, your actions now represent the community, so you will be held to a higher standard of behavior. You are an ambassador of trust, with the same sorts of rights that the official development team and community coordinators have. -- stackoverflow.blog/2009/05/18/a-theory-of-moderation
There's also that bit! ^
@AnneAunyme awww.
@AnneAunyme Of all the people I only met recently at RPG.SE, you do stand out.
14:39
@doppelgreener you're also still human. And the patience you have can a still be tested at times. When someone keeps poking, it's hard to keep your cool. But realizing it and owning it are the best things you can do. Which you've done!
@NautArch \o/ thanks for that.
@eimyr awww too!
@NautArch yeah, doppel has a vey big shonen power potential, no doubt he will soon master the art of moderation
i'll be the real super sand man
will he manage to reach the level of the legendary heptocahedron? We can't know yet
my mod hammer is the hammer that will pierce the heavens
14:54
Dai-Gurren-dan.
15:05
Is it Father's day this Sunday in the states? Father's day is the 18th in Canada
@doppelgreener I was scrolling through the chat backlog and someone said it was this week, so I was confused

2 hours later…
17:03
Nobody's said anything for two hours so I will
shhhhh
Just in case somebody was waiting because everyone hates putting in the first word in an empty chat
like me, for example
The legendary heptahedron has arrived
well, the good news is I didn't break my ankle. Bad news is, a third sprain.
I can definitely be considered "injury prone" at this point.
@NautArch Ouch
Ah, bloody hell. Sounds like you got roughed up by... something? Sorry, I haven't lurked in a while.
17:19
myself mostly. Running on a trail and it just rolled.
Ouch. Ah, good luck with that.
doc said I should wear these
see no reason not to (as long as they fit in my shoes)
i don't want to stop trail running
@BESW I see this and know I've made a terrible mistake.
@NautArch well, good luck with that
17:41
@SevenSidedDie SUBOPTIMAL! 5 MINUTES OF FUN per session! INCOHERENT GAME THAT'S NOT VERY CLEAR ABOUT WHO IT CATERS TO! [keeps throwing anathemas over all those things]
18:05
Oh hi Kingmaker kickstarter.
Video game version of a chose-your-way campaign. I'll bite.
18:22
i had a friend who set up a crowdfunding page for their project. What was annoying is that they're pretty wealthy.

1 hour later…
19:27
Hmm. Could Tyranids assimilate the group reality-bending powers of Orks?
As it was explained to me, that's not an Ork power.
Its a power that Orks use
Like guns.
19:41
So any race could potentially could warp reality through groupthink?
It's just that the Orks either do it better or have an instinctual grasp on it?
20:01
As it was explained to me, yes. But fair warning, I'm a 5th-hand source.
More specifically, as it was explained to me, reality warping works on group-think true-belief. If enough people all believe the same thing, and all believe it hard enough, it becomes true. Which is why the god-emperor is a "god", and not just an emperor.
20:50
everyone on web uses a name of her favor. If you acquaint a person from web, don't expect her to give you a fixed name.
everyone can play a online game with a different name every time.
captain is just my name.
@CaptainBohemian cool story bro
I am a female.
I don't discriminate
@CaptainBohemian hmmm, are you replying to someone specific? Just so you know, you can hover over that message and click on the "new line" symbol that appears at the far right to have your current message be a reply to that one.
In modern times, "bro" is sort of a unisex term when used in such a manner. But I can understand being bothered by people assuming others are male on the internet. It bugs me too.
20:56
@Papayaman1000 is "bruh" or "brah" better or worse? I'm gonna go with worse.
@NautArch I... think worse, yeah.
I just wonder why someone from web is so unhappy with my not telling me my name.
@CaptainBohemian Did someone go after you about that? Weird.
@CaptainBohemian that's very odd - i'm guessing that it didn't happen here?
someone told me sir doesn't necessarily refer to male. now I understand bro i that way, too.
21:00
well, I can only blurt out a theory, but it muight be because, in your specific case, the chat system trims your name at "Captain" and Cpt is a title, not a name. One might wonder "Captain what?" (On the contrary, I've been called out for calling a person "Lord" because it was part of the nickname. Apparently, someone else thought it was boosting his ego too much, or something like that
(I would have expected to be told it was impersonal or rude to not use the other part of the nickname but... IIRC that's not what happened.)
@CaptainBohemian More like "cool story bro" being a citation of a meme, thus being a sort of fixed sentence, hence Papayaman10's "in that context"
@Zachiel And now, given the context that someone actually went after her for not giving her name, I feel like an ass for using said meme in said context.
@Zachiel Like a massive ass.
Well I don't think it's a problem, it's just something that needs context, and I'm doing my best to provide it.
@Zachiel Still, I made the comment thinking it was some sort of blanket statement, intended as a big entrance. Which would have been rather pretentious. Now I feel like I just offhandedly dismissed something rather more important. Which is how that meme is used, most of the time.
21:05
@Papayaman1000 is it?
@CaptainBohemian Anyways, accidental jerkishness on my part and this disappointingly inconsiderate event aside, how are you doing?
I wasn't aware of this
@Zachiel Yeah, if you see a single-line comment on your 5-paragraph Tumblr post or whatever, containing simply, "cool story bro", it usually isn't meant as a sincere compliment.
Sort of like colloquially referring to it as "your 5-paragraph Tumblr post or whatever".
@DrRDizzle If my NPC is classed, I prepare as that class. But not all of my magic-using NPCs are classed. (I often dig into a FUDGE supplement I love for differently-mechaniced magics that I'll throw out there in the world.)
On a different note, anybody tried making sushi for game night munchies? Did it work out at a reasonable price?
21:11
In my reality nobody calls me name registered in my country's id for long. I think I can just forget it.
@CaptainBohemian moving on... What's up?
@Papayaman1000 sushi with fish or vegetarian?
@NautArch yes
@Papayaman1000 see edit :)
@NautArch I did
Both?
21:16
@Papayaman1000 My wife has made sushi before, not as game munchies but just because. If I recall, it is fairly cheap, but takes a lot of work
@NautArch yes
@GreySage That's about my goal. What I'm wondering is does "fairly cheap" still apply when supplying for six fat guys
I live in a place where I have no mental relevance to my neighborhood. I don't follow any custom or festival here. I am just physically here but mentally wandering.
@Papayaman1000 I would assume so, although feeding 6 people will always be more expensive than feeding 2.
@GreySage I'll have to visit the local fishmonger later to check the prices on sashimi-quality salmon
I'm going to be up there anyway
Strangers in the neighborhood usually approach me talking to me like I am a person of the type of this neighborhood, but I am really not.
21:26
Today in Your Fantasy Animal Needs More Random Attack Modes:
The stargazer fish buries itself in sand and can deliver electric shocks as well as venom. https://t.co/Zwor4DkG4y
That's why I don't like to tell others where I come from when I am outside this home city.
@CaptainBohemian Strangers talk to you? That's weird enough as it is
@GreySage Well, I mean just anybody on the street. It's unavoidable to be accosted no matter where you go.
@CaptainBohemian That... is really not my experience. I think the only times I've ever been talked to on the street is when someone ask for directions
@Papayaman1000 agreed. The fish is costly, but you don't use a whole lot, especially if you also make veggie. But the time investment is real. You have the tools?
21:31
@NautArch Of course. Sharp knife, decent pan, and my favorite tatami mat.
@Papayaman1000 Do you have the right kind of rice? and Sushi vinegar?
@GreySage The best long-grain imitator I can get, and a fine rice vinegar.
@GreySage on the street besides direction inquirers, there are commonly also merchandise promoters and beggers.
@CaptainBohemian A municipal area, then? Joy.
@CaptainBohemian Do you live in a touristy area then?
21:35
@Papayaman1000 yes, this is a highly urbanized area. You can't expect to see a little bit of natural view. The most common recreation facility here is bar. But I have never been to a bar. That's why I said I am not a person of the type of my neighborhood.
@CaptainBohemian "Not-barhopper" !== "Does not fit in"
just by every several footsteps you can see a bar.
@Papayaman1000 are you teaching me English because you know I am not a native English speaker?
Ah, we have a lots of bars even here (and this isn't that highly urbanized of an area, there's even some factories around here. It's a small town, around 20k inhabitants. But the town centre is mostly bars, banks and dress shops.
@CaptainBohemian No, just saying that not going into bars much doesn't really mean much. In a cultural sense, at least.
@GreySage nothing here can be treated as tourist. All you can do here is shopping or drinking or eating. I feek them quite boring.
21:39
@CaptainBohemian Those 3 things are very touristy, but I'll take your word for it.
@GreySage for me, tourism means there are scenery to watch.
@CaptainBohemian That's the telltale signs of a big municipal center, if not a college town. Despite the fare nearby being astoundingly boring, trust me, you have a lot of tourist there.
@CaptainBohemian To me, tourism means someone in the town neither lives there nor has relatives there.
But hey, I don't get out much :P
@Papayaman1000 I am from Orient. There is no college town here like in the west.
@BESW lol XD
@CaptainBohemian ...you'd be surprised. But still, "big city" usually means tourists, no matter what. Which is very frustrating for everyone who's not a current tourist.
21:44
in my city, there are indeed many universoties. But we never have college town. I don't really know what a college town looks like.
Even if there are no sceneries, I suppose you have some, I don't know, historical buildings, or other things worth visiting. If not, people could visit to taste local foods, or because of thermal pools, or of some festival or other event. I know people who visited Hong Kong for the food, and from the few photos I've seen of it it doesn't really look like a city with much nature and haunting natural vistas. Sometimes people visit places just to know how they look from within
But then I'm not much of a traveller.
@CaptainBohemian It's just a place where a lot of businesses pop up to appeal to college kids. Hence, bars and department stores.
What do I know?
@Zachiel I have only passed Hong Kong browsing in its airport. But I heard Hong King is famous for its shopping feature. I guess I wouldn't like such a place. I prefer a place having spectacular snenery.
@CaptainBohemian I agree, Scenery and culture locations like museums are more enjoyable to me than shopping/eating
But I know a lot of people feel differently
(tourism is the most profitable industry where I live btw)
21:50
I read from Quora the impression of my city from foreingers is thatthe main feature of my city is food. No wonder I don't feel my city interesting. I just feel food not much attractive to me.
@CaptainBohemian I'm the sort of person who sees food as a huge part of a culture. But hey, Im a fat guy, I think with my stomach.
@GreySage I feel the same with you. Scenery and historic artifacts are more interesting than food and shopping.
@CaptainBohemian Ultimately, I agree. But food is delicious.
I have visited Beijing and I found food in Beijing is so rough and doesn't taste well commonly. But I still like Beijing for its scenery.
@Papayaman1000 I usually only feel food delicious when I eat it the first or second time. Then I don't feel it that delicious anymore. I don't feel not much food can be always delicious. I always want new kind of food to feel delicious.
@CaptainBohemian Yeah. I just enjoy the kind of food that can have a near infinite amount of subtle variation: sushi all of it.
21:59
@Papayaman1000 I feel actually I enjoy atmosphere than food itself. I would feel having a picnic in a sceneic place very enjoyable, far more than a usual restaurant.
@CaptainBohemian Absolutely. But I'm fat. And food is delicious. And that joke is getting old.
@Papayaman1000 is delicious food common? I am often hungry but can't find delicious food and thus don't know what to eat.
@CaptainBohemian ...um. Uh? Hrm. That's a legitimately difficult and someone philisophical question.
@CaptainBohemian I am notoriously easy to please when it comes to food. As long as you avoid the few things I dislike (like peas), I'll eat anything, and will be perfectly happy eating the same thing everyday.
@CaptainBohemian So I don't think I can help with this problem
@GreySage Now that sort of unending monotony is why a TPK happened last time the players conspired against me to order pizza.
22:03
@GreySage Really? Then you are opposite to me. I am often forced to eat food I don't really like due to overhunger. I just can't find food I really like.
I'll also just not eat meals if I'm busy or otherwise occupied. Food isn't a big deal to me, I guess is what I'm saying.
@GreySage I usually only eat when I am hungry. I don't feel much desire to eat when not hungry. I feel doing a lot of things are far more interesting than eating. But I really hate the feeling of hunger.
On the contrary, there's a lot of things I don't like eating, but some I really like - mostly pasta with minced meat sauce, pork with milk and flour sauce, curry rice, fried onions... I don't obsess over food, but it's one of the few things I spend extra money on
(I don't like going to the movies, or buying things - in fact, all D&D manuals I have are more like the remains of disbanded groups, or common property of the current one. But going to a restaurant with a decent price? I'm in.)
hey there @Papayaman1000 @Zachiel
hey there @Shalvenay
22:12
how're things going?
talking with the newcomer @CaptainBohemian
not bad, not bad.
alright here, and hey as well @CaptainBohemian
I'm pretty picky about restaurant food; given time and energy I usually prefer to make my own dinners.
@BESW This
22:20
I even don't know the English names of a lot of food. Probably I just don't have much interest in food so don't bother to learn them.
@CaptainBohemian A lot of food names aren't translated. That, or they're Italian/French.
A lof of our food also has no suitable English translation. Our feature food for Drangon boat Festival on lunar May 5 is translated into dumpling rice. I guess you can't tell what it means.
You mean zongzi?
@CaptainBohemian That's more lazy translators. Again, most people just go by the original name. Sushi, for example. Sometimes its particularly bad; just go over to Anime.SE and mention "jelly donuts".
@Papayaman1000 I fear asking.
Is yours a dare?
22:27
@Papayaman1000 Cultural food really shouldn't be translated, it is what it is
A bad translation/localization of standard rice balls.
@GreySage Right. Or poorly edited into sandwiches.
@BESW yea, it is pronounced that way.
@Papayaman1000 Ah, I see. It's sticky rice so it somehow became jelly.
@Papayaman1000 [googles] ...onigiri? People call onigiri something other than onigiri?
@Zachiel heheheh. I personally think a deep-fried sticky rice ball could be tasty ;)
22:28
@Zachiel No, they were literally called jelly donuts. As in, jelly-filled donuts.
"Rice balls." Really.
On top of it all, most "translations" are really just a laconic description of the food. Like "rice balls", "rice dumplings", "rice [shape]s".
@BESW what's wrong with having a bad memory for Japanese food names? XD
It's quite understandable, but it's not gonna get you very far if you've got something specific in mind.
Other things rice balls have been called shamelessly: "sandwiches"
22:31
that's just...bad
Because 90s xenophobia in anime dubs was real.
There's a reason all weeaboos cheered at the collapse of 4kids.
feeds @Papayaman1000 chicken feet
To be fair, I come from a place where Pocky is just a candy you can get at the gas station.
(They also sell Spam musubi.)
@BESW I've found it in innocuous candy aisles, but it's uncommon outside of cultural stores.
Which is sad, because biscuit dipsticks are delicious.
Or, if you're British Commonwealth, "breadsticks".
As a kid I preferred the ones with plain sticks and a tub of frosting in the side of the container so you could dip it yourself.
22:35
Funny things I've seen: a bunch of British people really confused why us Americans love breadsticks so much. They weren't thinking of delicious, fluffy sticks of fresh-baked bread dough, they were thinking of crunchy, pencil-thick biscuit sticks.
@Papayaman1000 Pocky is in probably every grocery/convenience store I have been to near my hometown, but that is probably because my hometown is an Asian as you can get while being in North America
@BESW yeah the Pocky is great, I still don't get why anyone likes spam
Then again, we also have entire chains of Chinese or Japanese or Korean only grocery stores
@Papayaman1000 Given the choice between asparagus sesame biscuits and fluffy garlic breadsticks I'll have a hard time picking.
@GreySage I live in Ohio, near Cleveland. The capital, Columbus, is a huge Asian culture center, especially for Japanese, but otherwise we voted Trump, so...
@BESW I'll take the latter any day simply because everything I eat has garlic in it and I love that fact
22:38
Normally I'm right there with you. But Ginbis Asparagus Biscuits, man.
Tangent, does 5e Warlock pact of the tome seem really underwhelming to anyone else?
@BESW *salivates*
I mean, you can choose between having a familiar, magic dimensional-traveling weapons (or any type you want), or 3 extra cantrips.
@Papayaman1000 They taste like childhood.
@BESW I do not have nostalgia for them. And I hate asparagus. But for whatever reason they sound delicous.
22:41
@GreySage there are invocations that require Tome
They're salty savory sesame-flavoured; the "asparagus" part is just because they're shaped vaguely like asparagus spears.

@CaptainBohemian Are you using this on your phone? If not, it should look like...
Anyway, crispy, pencil-thin breadsticks (possibly a little burnt near the ends), Turin type, are addicting.
@Papayaman1000 i use it on my notebook.
22:50
@CaptainBohemian or simply link to the URL of an image. http://foo.com/bar.jpg alone on its own line will upload the linked image.
@godskook As a general rule, answers are best received which frontload a summary of their advice, then support their reasoning and explain their advice in more depth.

@godskook (I can't spell "jpg" today, it seems)
@Shalvenay Good, basically. You?
alright here
@Papayaman1000 my window has no ''upload" near ''send''.
@CaptainBohemian uh? Hm.
22:52
@BESW, I.....I don't think that way.
Not really sure how I'd go about editing it for that format.
@godskook Neither do I. That's what re-writes are for.
@Papayaman1000 might it be that it is an unlockable privilege?
@godskook Nobody does. You usually reason out the answer before coming up with an answer based on those facts.
Summary of conclusion; context for conclusion; detailed conclusion based on context.
@BESW Like an essay
22:54
@Zachiel I don't think, but I didn't really become active in chat until I was more of a higher-rep user.
@Papayaman1000 He's on a notebook. So it's the mobile interface.
@Zachiel, I have it, so I'm going to assume not an unlockable interface.
@BESW (She, btw)
Right, sorry.
I'm also on a notebook. Well, I'm also the sort of person who refers to "notebooks" and "netbooks" interchangeably though.
22:56
@Papayaman1000 I'm the sort of person who wonders who you can use the internet on a notebook. I just write or draw in my notebooks.
Occasionally tearing out pages to make paper airplanes
@GreySage Raspberry Pi trickery mostly
[You just know someone's made a RaspPi display out of a literal notebook and a cheap LCD.]
[Google won't find it for me but you know]
@Papayaman1000 Heck, I've seen someone make a physical book you can play Myst in.
@BESW But does it run DOOM?
[Side note: Picked up original in-box Myst and Riven copies for ten bucks in all at the local Goodwill recently. Happy days.]
@Papayaman1000 A quick google reveals pi machines made out of lego, wood, and a surprisingly large number of nintendo consoles, but no notebooks
23:02
@GreySage If I made it for the pun, do you think the entire RaspberryPi.SE chat would collectively cringe at it?
@BESW I am very familiar with that tumblr
@BESW I don't think I have ever actually seen the word "traipse" until right now
@GreySage Yeah, them North Koreans just love doing it through your IoT devices
@BESW Now if only I had $1000 to pay for it
@Papayaman1000 damn botnets
@Zachiel Also see: How A DNS Server, Yes A Freaking DNS SERVER, Was DDOSed

Awake and fully operational.
