@doppelgreener That's one reason I started writing the explanations, and then I forgot about it.
And “comfort” sounds a bit too much in the other direction. If we decide to play horror, or DeD, or something, we won't be, but haven't signed up to be, comfortable in the usual sense.

gotcha
well, just safety then
since you're right, there are circumstances where people deliberately explore uncomfortable scenarios
Dogs in the Vineyard and My Life With Master are even specifically about invoking discomfort

12:15 AM
In specific ways, mind.

12:37 AM
Or there will be, anyway.

12:56 AM
@Trish Just as the Amaranth itself (as I remember). Every Storyteller used his own rules. BTW, I actually rarely see players that are inhumane enough to roleplay something like Tzimisce or and Assamite, so I don't see being unable to play them as a problem. But they make perfect ST characters.

hey there @Emrakul

user61230
Hello!

Also, anyone who claims to "do a lot of astro physics and quantum mechanics as a hobby" makes me nervous.

@Emrakul [wave]

@Emrakul how're things going?

@Emrakul sorry to hear that. Would you like me to translate your messages above?
(For the wider audience?)

wow, I didn't even know that actually meant something

@trogdor It says 'e's trapped in a fortune cookie factory.

@nitsua60 Or who sees the word "timeless" and writes a page without reading anything else.

General gist of Emrakul's current situation: phone will only type punctuation. No, he's not kidding. Phone will only let him type punctuation. He's totally serious.

2:09 AM
wtf?

He's encoding impressively quickly, though.

Emrakul: trogdor just said .-- - ..-. ..--..

Presumably he can read non-punctuation characters.

Try to star only one or two representative lines from a conversation, please.
you-all can be reminded: the line I starred says "my phone will not let me type letters into chat, only punctuation"

@Emrakul it's like the 2010's version of...

user61230
HAH.

user61230
How've things been, though, it's been a while since I poked my head in here!

alright here, finally got my 5e bronze tag badge

user61230
2:25 AM
sweet, congrats!

now, to see how much rep I can grind on DIY in a month xD need just over 900 there to make the 10k milestone

user61230
Is DIY graduating?

user61230
Oh wait.

@Emrakul Hooray! Hello!

user61230
@doppelgreener Ahoyhoy!

2:30 AM
DIY's long out of beta -- I'm just happy to make 10k on a Stack to begin with
(I also just made 5k rep here on RPG.SE, and am under 100 rep to 5k on Aviation)

user61230
That's neat, congrats!

also, got close vote rights on EE.SE -- man, that place's close vote queue will keep you hopping!

user61230
Wait, I could swear you were 10k or 20k on RPG?

@Emrakul LOL :P
25k total
only 20% RPG rep though :P

user61230
Huh, fair enough!

On that footnotes/endnotes discussion earlier:
4 hours ago, by nitsua60
@Anaphory Except they are structurally identical to every footnote written in the history of writing before hyperlinks =)
On a small post they're like footnotes, and I'm comfortable using them. I trust people unfamiliar to figure out what's going on -- people are going to come across a text someday that uses footnotes, and they don't tend to come with instructions, so I feel confident this trust is well-placed.
I don't care if people find a post snooty because I happen to use conventions that convey information effectually; I may as well be shy to use headings and formatting in that case.
In a long post, either I will try to establish the references I am making before I begin using them (as I do in this answer in the "A Brief History" section), or I will put all the notes at the end and take them as endnotes. Critically, in a long post, I am using headings and short sections. I trust the user will take note of them to keep their place.
If I am writing a long post with headings and short sections, often I have no need to make footnotes/endnotes, but if I do, I can actually put footnotes per section in which case they are still just a short scroll away, or probably already on the same screen and only a glance away.
[/doppelgreener's stance on footnote usage on the stack]

3:40 AM
My problem with footnotes as-is here, now, is that they are only visually structurally footnotes; in actual logical-semantic structure (the underlying HTML), they are structurally paragraphs that are inexplicably sub/superscripted. Hyperlinks would be great, but would only be icing on top of fixing that fundamental semantic problem.
In the meantime, we make do.

4:03 AM
@SevenSidedDie As always, I admire your ability to express yourself diplomatically.
Wrt your comment on the book question, I mean, not the footnote thing.

@Miniman Sometimes it really pains me that we can only lead a horse to water. My best tonic for frustration is empathy and diplomacy.

My best tonic for frustration is murdering things in videogames - not quite as productive, unfortunately.
On the other hand, apparently I achieved something just now, even if it was just making myself look understanding and helpful instead of the downvoting close-voting jerk that I secretly am.

if you want close-vote-a-palooza, EE.SE sigh

my best tonic for frustration involves both of those tonics for frustration, not necessarily in the same place cause that would be weird

4:18 AM
I have actually played against a guy who applogised every time he murdered me.

there is that

Which, sadly, was 50 times in under 10 minutes without me scoring a sigle hit on him.

in some games I have been known to refuse to kill certain people till they attacked me first
even when the meta was supposed to be "just kill all these people because you can"

4:34 AM
anyone here ever used the Magical Duel rules in ADnD 2e "High Level Campaigns" book?

hey there @daze413 -- and thankfully, no

oh hey @Shalvenay ! wow, that bad, huh?

@daze413 not sure, but more like "thank gosh I never had a character that'd get into magical duels"
less "bad rules" and more "waaaay too risky"

I see. It doesn't look very fun, either, reading it. May be good to just leave it out of the game (for now)

4:56 AM
@daze413 Wow. I just read that chapter. (Have had the book for decades, never really got around to reading more than ten or so pages of it.) Basic idea: seems kinda-interesting. However, if your minigame requires reproducing the entire spell list with new notes on how each spell will work in the minigame... count me out.

@nitsua60 yikes!

So the Thistle & Shamrock is playing wax cylinder recordings of songs sung by oystermen as incantations to the oysters.
THIS is what maddens me about the portrayal of magic in fantasy (and I do it myself, lord knows.)
Magic is traditionally not about breaking the world. It's about butter and oysters and finding herring and keeping the evil eye off the cow.

5:15 AM
...why do people randomly use ` instead of '?

Where do you see that?

Well, in the words of someone I just made up, It looks more backticky.
Wait, backticks create code formatting? Learn something new every day.

@Powerdork Behold.
(I've already edited four or six like it in the last day or two, and more in the past.)

Roughly speaking, for every 3 posts that used grave marks for code formatting, someone uses a grave mark instead of an apostrophe or a single quote.

5:21 AM
@BESW oh, dear

Or, you know, like Powerdork just quoted.

@BESW But of those, how many use it in combination with the basic apostrophe or single quote?

I have not done that research.
But based on the edits I've done over the last couple days... maybe three posts.

I was going to check, but I remembered that you've been editing them out, so they'll only exist in your memory.
...and edit history. Which I think I can search, actually.

The Chasse of Ambazac is stunningly gorgeous.

5:32 AM
830 cases of posts containing both.

That seems unusually large.

Or that once contained both.
And that will include posts using the grave for code formatting.

Ah, that's more reasonable.
I also found a few that used grave marks for formatting and for apostrophes/single quotes.

I don't have a way to distinguish 4

You could approximate it by checking for even/odd counts?

5:36 AM
I don't have a way to distinguish between characters used for markup and characters displayed, sadly.
Sorry, phone posting messing up.
17 cases that included 1 grave but not 2 as well as at least one quote.
Only 12 that still do, though.

I haven't been paying much attention to the non-formatting grave marks yet.

Oh, right - you're been going after code formatting?

Yeah.
But in the process I've noticed all the grave marks used for other things.
I can't really justify an edit purge for minor typos, though.

Ok, when I get home I'll put up a query that should eliminate most of the non-code-formatting graves.

I think I've got most of the formatting purged already, haven't I?

5:52 AM
Wow, you really have - 8 left, and there's definitely some valid uses in there.
Yep, all that's left is legit uses and cases where someone has used graves for apostrophes twice.
That reminds me...I haven't done a rouge purge in a while.

There are a few "legit" uses that I think should be changed to apostrophes anyway, but they're inside full-on five-space code lines so aren't really urgent.
(I'm not sure if five-space code lines are considered okay themselves?)

6:13 AM
@BESW I strongly suspect it is a product of particular language/keyboard combinations. I mostly see the backtick used as an apostrophe with particular sorts of non-native-speaking English. I haven't figured out the exact parent languages/keyboard that encourage it though.

That seems reasonable.

"So the Tarrasque is a creature that slumbers in the core of the earth. And the Feywild and Shadowfell are light and dark reflections of the Material Plane. Does that mean there is a Fey and Shadow version of the Tarrasque in those planes?" <- Reddit asks important questions.

Hmm. What about the notion that they're actually time-shifted versions of the Material Plane?

Feywild the primordial past and Shadowfell the entropic future?

Yup.

An interesting theory
Given that the Tarrasque Cannot Die, it will be the only living thing native to Shadowfell. Scarred, starving, it roams the end of the world, right "next door" to us.

It also opens interesting ideas about the origin of the Tarrasque.
In the Feywild it's younger, more energetic, less prone to sudden naps.
And there are all kinds of early-world legends which could attach to its creation.

8:05 AM
First, there was an egg. The Tarrasque hatched from it, and roared. Out of its shell grew the world. It will exist for as long as the Tarrasque does. In the last days of the world, Tarrasque will go on a rampage, devouring it. Then, when there is nothing left, it will lay an egg.

...in 4e lore, would this mean the Tarrasque is a Far Realm being?
I can get behind that.

"What came first, the Tarrasque or the egg?" "Far Realm"

The whole multiverse is just part of the Tarrasque's life cycle.
Actually, wait.
The multiverse is the Tarrasque's egg, existence the yolk on which it feeds.
At the end of the world, the Tarrasque simply hatches.

Into another world, to repeat the cycle, forever.
It's multiverses all the way down.

There are probably a great many multiverses, each a single Tarrasque's egg.
Tarrasques are only unique within each one's egg; in the Far Realm, they're just ordinary creatures.

8:12 AM
"Daddy, why do we exist?" "So that the Tarrasque may one day feed on our bones."

And, of course, this will happen in the Shadowfell.
The decay of the universe is just the yolk shrinking.
So... aberrations are parasites and symbiotes?

Pretty much. And more potent Far Realm entities could be Tarrasque farmers.

Elder Gods are predators and guardians of the Tarrasque?
Heh. Farmers and foxes.
I consider this a wonderfully acceptable alternate canon.

Worth saving the conversation, if only I remebered how.

@Trish It's considered poor form to ghoul any high profile human, so I'm guessing the ventrue in general would be pretty annoyed.

"Am I the only one that has noticed this pattern and is the solitaire algorithm a Microsoft plot to rule the world?" Well that's something I didn't expect to see asked on the Stack anywhere.

@doppelgreener I feel like it's a trap for readers who hew strictly to operator precedence/depth-first workflow.

Oh, dear, reading code I wrote ten years ago. It's like teenaged poetry. So painful.

lol, I can emphasize

I've never really made grid maps before. Anyone wanna check this one out and tell me what you think? imgur.com/Fk35PhP

@Fibericon are you using it for online play? printing for tabletop? What game?

Printing for tabletop, D&D 5e

Looks like a big room with 4 rooms off it. Looks good, though I think there's some cafe wall effect going on with the vertical lines in the large room. Not sure it matters, though....

Oh man. I didn't see it until you linked that, and now that I know what it is, I see it. I'm also mildly concerned that I don't really have a texture for the walls, and they seem a bit out of place as plain grey when the floor and ground are textured.

4:12 PM
"Better" is the enemy of "good enough," man.

Fair point. Just want to get my first published adventure done right, even if it's only self published.

@Fibericon oooohh... for publication, I'd definitely play around with it a bit. I thought you meant it was for your (personal) table, like you were going to print it for tonight's game.
In that case, "anything worth doing is worth doing well."

If I was printing it for tonight's game, I would have just done the old school blue map style. I strongly considered doing that for this one, just because that's how I'd prefer it, but in the end I figured prettier would be better.

@SevenSidedDie on that answer you just deleted, I think a comment linking the poster to our faq on frame challenges would be good; but as it's deleted I can't add the comment. Can you?

Our Redbubble store has 35% off all tees and 20% off everything else with code CYBERMON http://www.redbubble.com/people/evilhat/shop/recent+t-shirts?cat_context=u-tees&ref=artist_shop_product_refinement https://t.co/d7mIjI3VpH

@nitsua60 I may have handled those in a bit of a hurry. Good call, and I've added a comment.

CAN I VENT?

10:35 PM
@Zachiel better than exploding, I guess =)
@SevenSidedDie Looks good to me.

I try to dispel the enemy caster. He's invisible. I then try to disple his three summons at least. I fail. He dispels me. ALL of my buffs.

Ahh, bad rolls.

Wait, the DM forgot that the DC is 11 plus my caster level

11:01 PM
ah right

Ok, I still have Shapechange. Good.
