@Anaphory I ran into that kind of thing in Polish lately. Apparently the preposition for “in” (w) and “on” (na) are slightly interchangeable* in one dialect (Mazovian), and Mazovian has become dominant in the past 15 years. But all the Polish ex-pats in Canada predate that, so they use w for things where na is now standard.
(* Not entirely interchangeable. As I understand it, na was always used for outdoor spaces while w used for indoor, but in Mazovian na gets used indoor (metaphorically?) when the size of the space is significant. So you're “in” a small household hallway, but you're “on” a large office hallway. It reminds me of how you can be “in the street” in English, but you can't be “in the sidewalk” (normally).)
I was once told a joke (which is apparently side-splittingly funny in the original Russian), about an American who spent years studying to infiltrate Soviet Russia but was exposed by the first random Russian peasant he met, after only saying "Hello."
Gah. I had an answer almost done, but this makes it impossible - there's just nothing to work with.
@BESW That doesn't seem that unlikely to me anymore. :) The Slavic languages are hella complicated in many of the ways that English speakers aren't even aware language could be complicated.
@Miniman I took one look at that question and nope-octopused away.
@SevenSidedDie I'm dying to bee that guy =)
@SevenSidedDie I think it was something about object-pronoun conjugation?
23:39
The unfortunately thing about the Internet is that when people want to do amazingly off-label creative things with an RPG, instead of just doing it like had always been done before, so many assume that there already exists a ready-made answer… and ask us what it is. 😭
@SevenSidedDie I was writing up a standard "you can either refluff or homebrew" sort of answer. But refluffing doesn't work when there's nothing to refluff, and homebrew doesn't work if they're already using a regular character. Maybe some sort of magical item, but...eh.
Hive a mind to give it a try =)
@nitsua60 If you do it well, people will sting your praises.
@Miniman “You're on the same page. Just do it. Enjoy the magical tea party, ta!” *hurl mic into the ocean*
@Miniman nothing to refluff!? You refluff a rapier as a "stick you found that bees always flock to" and be on your way =)
Sorry, "bee on your way =)"
23:42
@BESW That seems likely. Polish, and I gather Russian as well, are very akin to Latin in how many words have to be declined to be grammatical.
@nitsua60 Nothing to refluff compared to "Your Spiritual Weapon is now made of bees. Enjoy."
Hey
Bee guy here
@BESW Excellent advice, but likely to have similar results. ^^
@Skathix Welcome!
23:45
@Skathix I just left a comment, but essentially, as it stands any homebrew that gives bees works as an answer.
@Skathix Hi! There are no rules remotely relevant to what your player would like to do, and you don't really need anything other than your existing shared enthusiasm to make up something fun. Just bee yourself. :)
Lmao, okay
bee + homebrew =... mead?
I like the idea that was posted
The idea that eventually it will be a swarm
Bee*
Just make sure that it's mechanically appropriate--you don't want something doing 10d8 dmg every round, or not scaling as the character levels, if it's going to bee an every-round sort of thing.
23:47
@Skathix How many players do you have aside from this one?
I'm thinking something more like 2d4 damage + some kind of distraction for a round
4-5 other, 5-6 total
If you base it on swarmthing in the existing mechanics, you're more likely to hive a good time with it.
Where would I find swarm mechanics?
Don't get BeeESW started--he'll be punning for flowers.
@Skathix In Appendix A of the Monster Manual.
23:49
Guys I think I'm in love with you lmao
@Skathix MM337
My player, Kitty is her name, is so excited right now
@Skathix In a group that size, you could probably just give her a Swarm of Insects without really breaking anything.
Indeed, even if it does, I've broken this group so many times, this is the first group I DMed, and I started with a custom campaign
Needless (hopefully) to say, they ended up with a luck blade at level 6 as well as a cubic gate
So I had to resolve their op-ness
@Skathix So long as the group has good open communication and is cool to say "Okay, that didn't work," breaking things is just a learning experience.
On occasion I've broken things on purpose just to see how they break.
23:52
@Skathix welcome to the (other) fun side of the table =)
Been there, I can't believe how much I love D&D, I've only been playing for a year and a half.
It's so great, thank you guys for the ideas, I have one more question about this
Oh, we bee-lieve.
Should I just give her the ability to "cast" this once per day?
OH you'll love this, she asked for a way to raise the bees on the go
So I made available for purchase a bag of "Bee-Holding"
look at the rest of her class features--how does this compare in utility?
The apiary that moves!
23:53
YOU GAVE HER A BEE-HOLDER? AT LEVEL 7?
=D
Lol
Yea, man she was so excited, this all started with me ad-libbing some stupid vendor shouting "Bees, got some bees for sale"
@Skathix Kitty needs to quest for a smoke mephit as her bee-keeping assistant.
Looking up Smoke Mephit
What are the other sorts of things she's like to want the bees to do? You mentioned "sword" in the post...
Yeah, she wants to dual wield bee swords lmfao
23:56
If the bees just come out and harm people, then it's easy to index them off of a rapier, or thrown handaxe, or EK cantrip.
But when she starts wanting them to go through the keyhole to sting people, or distract someone balancing on a ledge....
I Quote:
Duel wield bee swords
That's the ultimate goal for my Vera at this time
Then you'd better not give it to her too quick =\
Lol
Okay, so build from swarm
To Mephit
To bee swords
A course in The Care and Feeding of Magical Animals
I gave her a bee training book lol
