I'm supposed to produce a mind-map tonight on the theme of "how do my lesson plans meet or not [professional organization's] standards." Unfortunately I don't lesson plan, and I've never looked at the standards. I suspect being the only independent-school teacher in a classroom full of public school teachers is going to be a bit of rough going for me.

@Momonga-sama That sort of makes sense - DW has been out long enough that most of the people who are going to buy it have bought it, so there's likely to be more demand for supplements than the core game.

You see it a lot with videogame expansions.

You remember, when you could buy a full game, with all content for 50 $? Pepperdige farm remembers.

Releasing the base RPG engine for cheap/free so people will try it out, and then charging for value-adding supplements customised to various tastes, is a common business practice.

Remember the d20 SRD? Same principle.

The money lost in underpricing the core materials is basically a marketing cost.

@Momonga-sama No, I remember when the three core D&D books cost $100 and then I had to buy dice and minis, and was expected to buy new supplements every few months.

@BESW I don't know how it was in the US or other countries, but when I started roleplaying, I paid something around 10 $ for the core rulebooks of D&D 3.5. For spending 80$ I got like 35 books :D

Every place has its challenges and problems, but I'm reasonably happy having problems in a tropical paradise.

What are the problems and chalanges?

It's an overcrowded peri-colonial territory with a fragile economy, a bloody history of oppression, and a governmental system imposed on it that clashes disastrously with the local social values. Substance abuse, family violence, and suicide are sadly common.

It can be. But those are the problems, and every place has problems.

The collectivist culture is really quite uplifting in many ways, and the strength of the people to endure and adapt under myriad hardships without losing their core identity is inspiring.

Like Hawking said, "There is no heaven.". I mean like, on earth, please don't get religious.

Although there's inter-island prejudice, it's almost impossible to become isolationist because Guam is a social, economic, and military hub of the Western Pacific: living here is like international travelling without leaving home.

And we're currently seeing a post-colonial style shift in the ownership and expression of the arts and culture which is really exciting to be part of.

If I wasn't part of various efforts to help improve the quality of life on the island, I'd be a lot more depressed about the status quo. But I can see that things are moving and changing, and I can see how I can be part of making those changes positive ones.
