12:04 AM
So many "how do I kill my fellow player" questions today. I really want to give an answer but i've never actually had to do this before D:

Whaaa?

@BESW Is there much talk of statehood efforts? I've been meaning to ask you (and @troggie) as Puerto Rico's statehood/non- has been in the news recently.

@nitsua60 Nothing serious, in the national sense. Every few years there's local agitation for independence or statehood, and our current status is a constant low-level irritant, but most folks don't think any change will actually be allowed to happen.
We're too valuable to the US as a strategic military base which can't bite back.
The US Congress, specifically.
(And through them, the US military.)

aahhh

You live in Puerto Rico?
Such a lovely island
A rainforest you can visit that isn't 12 hours away

12:08 AM
no

@BESW Yay, ultimatum.

we just have some similar ish issues and such

I live on Guam, which has a similar political status, so PR's status being in the news reminded Nitsua of ours.

@PremierBromanov Btw, I've been meaning to ask you - why Romanov for your avatar?

Hmm. Aside from DitV, what are games which use all the polyhedrons a lot?

12:12 AM
Savage Worlds?

@BESW I rarely go a session of D&D5e without using all of them.

@nitsua60 Yeah, but how frequently?
I'm looking for games that have players handling the polyhedrons very regularly.

@BESW Boardgames or systems?

@BESW Equally?

I guess a boardgame would work for this purpose.
@Miniman As much as possible.

12:15 AM
@BESW Then I've got nothing.

Context: I'm thinking about an answer to this question which says "Take a night or two to play [game] for a more intensive dice-focused experience, so they get more practice jammed into a smaller amount of time."

@Miniman because it's my name? BRO-manov
Long time ago I was Broseidon, but that wasn't unique enough after a few years, so I kept the bro theme and went with one of my favorite games of all time
slapped BRO onto romanov
Its 99% unique now. Some douche stole my name on steam recently hahaha

@PremierBromanov Lol, that makes sense. I just wondered, since he's not exactly an imposing figure :P
(Or a bro, really.)

SW does look pretty good, though a bit more crunchy than I'd normally recommend for a one-off.
Okay, so DitV and SW. Can we get a third?

12:19 AM
There are like thousands of settings for it. Seriously, name anything, you will find it.

I'm not sure what settings have to do with anything.

@BESW [hears a new 200-word submission whirring in the distance...]

@nitsua60 No. [hands over ears]

Well, they customize the game to be more like the presented setting.

@Miniman yeah i guess it doesnt make sense lol. I just like the reference. its kinda set in stone at this point

12:22 AM
Maybe Danger Patrol.

@PremierBromanov XD I've been meaning to beat RA2 again ever since it appeared on Origin.

@Miniman Every so often I pirate The First Decade from EA since I bought all the games when they came out AND I bought the first decade by itself
I can never find the discs lol

@BESW [buzzing gets louder] somehow mix up d12+d2, d10+d4, and d6+d8 rolls. All have the same expected value, but differently-plateaued distributions. (And for the d2 use a d20.)

@nitsua60 Check out Danger Patrol.
It's not the same "expected value" thing, but it's a "mash up different sized dice" thing.

@BESW I like the subtle interaction between strengths and die sizes.
[buzz buzz buzz] if there are multiple tiers of success/faliure then the choice of die pairing would represent risk aversion/acceptance
Or without the pairing--you've got six dice to spend on doing things, and they're one of each. You parse them out strategically, perhaps pairing up with/against other players?

12:32 AM
@BESW I know a guy whose physics department (apparently) invented a game he calls "Dices". You roll one of each die type (4, 6, 8, 12, 20, and percentile). The goal is to be the first person to use math operators to make the five numbers equal the percentile.

(oh, I paired them again)

the down side for your purposes is you don't really distinguish between the die for any reason

@JoelHarmon ...I need to tell my mother about this game.

what does she do?

gamble
[rimshot]

12:32 AM
Maths

also, there are definitely unsolvable combinations: 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 99.

(1+1) * something?

She's an English composition and creative non-fiction professor, and a painter, but she also has a degree in math education and used to program the university's computer back when the university had A Computer In A Room.

there was a card game I played years ago called '24', which is very similar

are you limited to just basic operators?

12:34 AM
depends on how you like to play it; we typically do +-*/^

Btw. isn't dungeons and dragons basically a boardgame? :D

1^x is typically considered unsporting, but sometimes the only way to go
d&d literally has a board game

Its a board game in the same way that visual novels are strategy games

Q: What's the difference between a roleplaying game and a board game?

JoeWhat's the difference between a roleplaying game and a non-roleplaying tabletop game? An RPG using miniatures looks (at a glance) a lot like a non-RP miniatures game. Some RPGs use cards, but they're not card games. Some games don't use boards or cards (like Pictionary), yet they're not RPGs. ...

Board game of a board game, you say?

12:35 AM
or rather, board games are in the same category as DnD as visual novels are strategy video games

is that like a book of a movie of a book?

visual novels are like video game books
Usually trying to romance some anime characters

@Momonga-sama Certainly a historic divide lies in the manner in which board games constrain moves to an finite set where miniatures players enjoy infinite choice of (still-constrained) moves.

@PremierBromanov Hatoful Boyfriend isn't a satire precisely.

12:41 AM
Btw. I think that one of the Matrix movies is a movie of a book of a movie :p

Sure, i guess. its a genuine VN thats comical in that you're courting birds and not anime women. Courting imaginary birds is largely the same as courting anime girls as far as your odds for that happening in real life go. A few years ago there was a game jam for VN's and a lot of funny ones came out, like one about a trex that used the same sort of cheesey dialogue lol

Thanks for your input, guys. I gave the answer here.

to actually contribute, though, Savage Worlds is nice because it has pictures of the actual die to use on the character sheet

I can see an answer to that question being anything but "play for more than 3 hours"
Like its not that much of an issue is it?

@Miniman Grace Note senpai noticed you.

12:52 AM
@Axoren Awww yis.
Now I have that song running around my head.

@PremierBromanov I'm having trouble parsing that sentence.

With the MathJax inclusion, I wanted to check is it was enabled in the Chat portion of the site.

@BESW perhaps mentally insert an " 't " after the "can"?

$\sum$
Looks like it isn't.

\$ \text{nope} \$

12:55 AM
Which is pretty fine, considering. It doesn't have as much of a need here.

(typing all these $s has me strongly flashing back to the late 90s)

when you were rich AF?

Using the MathJax Bookmarklet as a backup strat works, though.

@PremierBromanov =)
(just got that)
And congrats to @doppelgreener for being the first to use MathJax on mainsite!

I'll add the MathJax meta to the Cool Stuff pin, but I'm waiting for the Dark Eye Kickstarter to officially close so I can update it all at once.

1:13 AM
Hey guys! New here.... I asked more of an opinion question rather than a rules question, and lo and behold here I am. And here's my question....
My character swung Tarzan-style on off a bridge using a rope to try and land on an opposite ledge. He didn't make the skill checks to get to the ledge, but passed the tumble check on the fall and only ended up with some nonlethal damage.

He said I couldn't try again without passing a will save (which I failed).

So I had to roleplay accordingly. Was the DM right in preventing this attempt?

@FrancisJohn I think I saw yours get put on hold just a few seconds ago.
Yup, looks like that was it.

Yep

Mxy pretty much nailed it with his comment: that sort of thing is a style choice which some people will like and some won't.

that can depend quite a bit on the system as well

Personally, I would've handled with "let it ride" and "fail forward."

1:16 AM
3.5

but typically it's a DM's judgement call

It's also very open in terms of what the DM's intention was.
And what the full context of the Tarzan-swing was.
With so many variables, the question might be too broad.

Let it ride: When a roll has succeeded or failed, you don't roll again until something's changed.

@FrancisJohn your DM might have an ulterior motive, like trying to move the group forward if you were messing around

Fail forward: Failure never means you run out of options or the story grinds to a halt. It means the easy/obvious/quick solution is blocked, but there are other, more complicated/dramatic options which open up.

1:18 AM
@PremierBromanov +1, this is what it sounded like, even without full context.

or he mightve been trying to instill fear into a character, because that's something people rarely roleplay. everyone's so brave because players dont care if they get hurt
hes forcing the issue upon you, which you might not like
but whether or not it's right is definitely a matter of opinion

@FrancisJohn I (and most people I know) consider the DM taking control over a player's character as Not Okay. However, it's worth considering that your DM might just have wanted to avoid the problem of letting you repeat the check over and over again until you succeeded; this can really bog a game down, as well as trivializing skill checks in general.
(There are better ways to prevent this problem, but that's neither here nor there.)

So in that context, I'd rule that no, you can't just try again. I wouldn't ask for a Will check, I'd just say "Well, that didn't work. What will you try instead?" and perhaps narrate something about the scene to focus on some options if they aren't obvious.

Having broken my ankle in an 18-inch fall, I now approach jumping-down-off-things very differently. I have to succeed a RL will save jumping down from the tailgate of my truck. So it strikes me as not unreasonable after your character took damage the first time. A bit of a kill-joy? Maybe. Trying to keep things moving? Maybe. Trying to stop the session from devolving into one-upsmanship on the crazy maneuvers? Maybe? GM wasn't sure what to do? Maybe.

I, personally, have learned the hard way that not steering players away from poor decision avenues leads to bad decision making throughout a campaign.

1:21 AM
Sometimes I enjoy a DM telling me what my character feels. It helps point us in the right direction, and can be used to move things along

His reasoning was that no sane person would try it again.

("Let it ride" is, generally, saying that it's boring to spend the session failing at the same thing over and over--and it's also mean and pointless to call for rolls until one of them fails.)

"You see a cliff, your character feels a bit uneasy about it, but you think you can muster the courage to move forward"
rather than "You see a cliff. it's pretty huge, what do you do?"

My reasoning was he didn't hurt himself that bad so why not try again.

this all boils down to random strangers second guessing a one-sided, out of context description

1:22 AM
like, give me something to go with, you know? Be a director, im the actor

there's really no solid answer anyone here can give

@JoelHarmon AND HOW!

(unless your DM joins for some reason)

Hahaha

MY recommendation is to enjoy every DM style for what it is. Try new experiences, just roll with it and see what comes of it. You might not favor it, but switching it up can be great

1:23 AM
i thought it was more like manually taking a 20. Fwiw he is a headstrong character too.
What made it tougher was one of the other characters was even goading him on to try again.

you might also be interested in the rule 'taking 10', which is like taking 20 but uses much less time

(Frankly, if missing the ledge isn't interesting and it makes sense your character can do the jump, I wouldn't have called for a roll at all, but that's not really in keeping with the 3.5 ethos)

I see what your saying about just kind of role with it though.

(not that I think taking 10 would apply here, but it's a related-ish rule to what you were saying)

Hey everyone i have to run. Thanks for your time!

@nitsua60 Incidentally, did you see the Volo's Guide to Monsters announcement? The Monster Manual is my favourite book so far, so I'm totally buzzed about it.

1:44 AM
@nitsua60 yay! And an attempt to manage three separate divisions piled on each other simultaneously too!

@Miniman no--I've been a little busy this week and have fallen behind on ENWorld (where I assume it would have been pointed out to me). I've recently been using the *ology books as inspiration for homebrew/off the beaten path monsters =)
(My son takes them out of his elementary school library and I cherry-pick pages to copy.)

@nitsua60 What are the ology books like? There's been a weird amount of contention over the Dungeonology announcement.

@doppelgreener Once I realized <div><grad><curl> wouldn't work in html I turned my back on that construct =)

Obduction will release on July 26 for Mac, PC, and Oculus Rift, for $30.

@Miniman Cool pictures, neat level of lore for a seven year-old. I'm vaguely aware there are deeper connections between/among things than I might have suspected, but haven't done the research to really understand the landscape. (Like, even to the level of "who's writing these things? Are they all a series? Or are there some that look like they could be but it's just a similar title-scheme?")

@SevenSidedDie, commenting on Platonic solids. Somewhere Euclid's rolling in his grave while Lobachevski dances a jig =)

My comment survived! always a tiny victory

@PremierBromanov I edited the information from last night's chat into the question, which should answer your comment.

dang bro
I dont know how to answer that then
you should have a pretty good grasp of the dice by then
shrug

In other seven-sided news, I had a dream the other day that many of us met up in a cafe. @doppelgreener was a floating green head, @Miniman was a kid wearing one of those spiky ski helmets (like this, but all red), and @trogdor looked resplendent flipping tables in a gown. SSD walked in: but he's not a pentagonal prism!
Turns out he's the dodecahedron from The Phantom Tollbooth, but five of the faces have been worn off from parenting: "Happy", "Patient", "Nervous", "Stern Correction", and "Twelve-Second Vacation While She's Buckled In And You're Walking To The Driver's Side" are all gone!

2:06 AM
are you doing okay?
:P

@nitsua60 Dodeca-what?

@PremierBromanov yeah, of course... I've still got all my faces =)

And for anyone unfamiliar with the source material...
@PremierBromanov Happily, there's no expectation that people without any experience in a subject need to weigh in on it.

@nitsua60 I don't quite know how to feel about this.

@Miniman It'll keep you warm, at least =)

2:16 AM
Its hard to empathize with, because object oriented thinking and categorizing things is basically my job, so its easy for me
see triangle dice, classify as D4, remembered for all time!
but i forget everyone's name, so its a tradeoff haha

@nitsua60 wow, you got me just right. How'd you know?
Sounds like an amazing dream :D

@PremierBromanov I see what you call "triangle dice" and think "that's the one that's self-dual!" We all look at them through different lenses....

@nitsua60 [learns a thing]
It took me a few years of GMing D&D to get really instinctive about distinguishing between some of the lesser-used dice. So yeah, I'm not just sympathetic--I have empathy for the guy's players.

@nitsua60 Also learns a thing.

@BESW @Miniman Next time you're fiddling with a d20 just look at those five faces emanating from one vertex, visualize the centers of each face, connect them to form a pentagon, and repeat twelve times to form a dodecahedron in your mind floating inside that d20. You'll be guaranteed to roll a 32 on your next check.
2

2:22 AM
And I'm kinda surprised there's two votes for opinion-based, as it's something where folks can truly leverage practical experience into actionable solutions.

@BESW I still regularly roll a d8 and then go "Wait, that's not a d10. Freaking d10."

@nitsua60 You won't believe this simple life hack!
@Miniman I know I kept confusing the d10 with something else; I think it was the d8.
I also remember regularly grabbing the d12 instead of another die, but I can't remember which die I was going for.
And I've known several folks who grab d8s instead of d4s.

@BESW My HS kids are always grabbing d12 in place of d20. I tell them they're much less likely to hit that way, but some insist =)

@nitsua60 Hmm. That 200-word game might turn out to be a roll-under.

In @Bromanov's taxonomy they're "the round one."

2:26 AM
The smaller your dice, the better your chances.

It loses you meaningful opportunities for partnership/combination. Unless we take the difference of dice rolled....
Gotta run--grades are due tonight and I haven't even started yet =\

ttfn

the what now
ahh yes, the dice with triangles on it but not as pointy as the others and more round than the squareish one

2:43 AM
@nitsua60 Get out your d6's! ;)

@nitsua60 so basically exactly like my current picture then

3:34 AM
@Roland Hi!

Heh. I'm reading an urban fantasy where a Chinese restaurant has a real Seer writing the fortunes for the cookies. One character swiped the cookie off someone else's plate. When he opened it, the fortune read, "This fortune not for you"

@Adeptus Sounds pretty awesome, what's it called?

lol
that is an incredibly delicious troll thing to write on a fortune you know is going to be stolen

3:50 AM
Bring It On, by Laura Anne Gilman. I think it's book 3 in the series, but only the second I've read. Main protagonist is a Retriever, like a magical thief.

I'll have to look it up.

4:03 AM
@BESW Hello

Our latest Fate World of Adventure is Film Noir/Monster Mash NITRATE CITY. http://drivethrurpg.com/product/184325/Nitrate-City--A-World-of-Adventure-for-Fate-Core?affiliate_id=24139 #PayWhatYouWant https://t.co/8JapGGyF4f
(I see this is linked in the cool rpg stuff, but I'd like to share this tweet anyway for that beautiful description.)

I've downloaded it, but haven't read it yet.
I'm interested in seeing how Evil Hat does Fate Noir.
Troggy and I tried it back during The Twosies Year, and it was... not our most successful effort.

7:10 AM
what do you mean by Fate Noir? just Fate doing the Genre of Noir?
was that the extremely short lived campaign where I was going to GM and you were going to play that Urban Druid in a kinda sorta mixed Theif/Soul Reaver setting?

Goedemorgen!

bless you
XD

I have finished my moving about and am now in a new town in a new country (thus the Dutch greeting) and it's time to get the dice rolling again!

nice
I hope you like it there

7:41 AM
@trogdor Yes, yes, it was.

mm was the only thing I could think of to fit the description

7:56 AM
@BESW Late to the conversation, but for lots of dice-switching in a board(/card) game - the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game has it in spades.
Most characters have skills at d4, d6, d8 and one at d10 or d12, and you'll probably have to use them all at some point. The different cards add different die types. Big combats can use quite large pools of dice. The latest set has rules for replacing dice with d20s if you spend an in-game currency.
However, it is not cheap...

That does sound pretty good conceptually, but since I don't know about it personally I can't in good faith add it to my answer.

Yup, no worries. Just the thing that immediately came to mind.

You could make it your own answer, leave it as a comment on mine, or edit it into my answer.

Comment added - I don't feel there's enough to add as a separate answer.
[hopes he doesn't start a deluge of "and this game..." comments...]

8:11 AM
@BESW had a play with Roll20 last night. IMO its complete overkill for what you want to do, and makes you jump through far too many hoops. However, I think it could do what you want, and would be happy to set up a test game for you to join at some point if other options don't present themselves

Sweet, thanks!
I'm expecting to need the solution in about 8 days from now.

Ping me if you decide its something you want to explore. The only days that are generally difficult for me are Wednesdays and Thursdays

1 hour later…

@Nox Hi!

I'm thinking about leaving my favourite play by chat. I can't go on seeing low level guys spend all their money on scrolls because I'm greedy and I don't want to buy them myself. My character is supposed to be good!

Nox
@BESW, hello there.

What's new?

Nox
9:56 AM
Not much. Have just supported a crowd-funding campaign for russian translation of Fate. Am shopping around for proper Fate Dice.

@Nox Ooh, that sounds cool. Got a link so I can add it to the Cool Stuff pin in the star bar?
As for dice--if Evil Hat will ship to you, their dice are pretty great.

Nox

if it's any use to the community. Was 100% funded in an hour, has 23 days to go and is 450% funded at the moment. It's actually pretty cool and is a big step for our TTRPG industry. Making my group read up on English rules all the time was inconvenient.

I know we've got a handful of Russian speakers floating around the chat.

I'm always interested to hear about gaming in various cultures.
There's a local event here where they're playing Magic: the Gathering exclusively in the native language.

Hi
@BESW Do you speak the native language well enough to run/play a game in it?

10:12 AM
Hah! No. I just know a few words and some memorised phrases and prayers.
One of the reasons the language is dying is that there's a sense it's not suitable for modern endeavours; Påkto: I Hinekka was made primarily to put the lie to that belief.

One more week until Mage starts.
I can't wait.

Cool.
I'm hoping to start my DFRPG-DF game next week.
Tomorrow night's game doesn't really need much prep--I like to run Umdaar by the seat of my pants.

10:29 AM
@BESW In your Q, what sort of answer are you really looking for?
It looks to me like a system-specific question - you just need a shared piece of paper while hearing and seeing what other people are saying and pointing at. Is that indeed all you need?
Or is it a tool-rec disguised as system specific gripe?>

It's system-specific (so Momonga's answer needs to do more work showing how his experience with other systems translates).
What I'd like to see, of course, is folks saying "I've done that thing [or thing which is usefully similar] and here's how."
I think the core of Momonga's answer is good, but I can't tell because he seems to be assuming the generic end result of "have a collaborative world design" is sufficient similarity.

How much does DFRPG city creation rely on the creation of a physical map? I can see it would help certain people who like to visualise, but can the exact layout be abstract during creation and then given form after creation?
It might give rise to "oh, that's not how I pictured it", which could be problematic, but might not be...

@BESW IS DFRPG city creation significantly different from Fate game creation with a map?

It's a lot less abstract than standard Fate creation, because it's about taking a real location and fictionalising it into the Dresden Files setting.
Like, I'm sorta planning to take a screenshot of Google Maps and draw on top of that.

@BESW Are there helpful builtin google maps tools that might do the share drawing for you?

10:41 AM
Not that I know of.
If there are, that could make for a good answer.

I'll try to have a look at some shared Google mapping solution, adding pins and the like, in that case...
(When I have access to a proper computer again...)

Thank you.
I mean, yes, this could easily be a tool-rec question and if people want to vote to close as tool-rec-in-denial I understand. I think it's a bit different myself, obv.

@BESW how is it now?

10:56 AM
Well, it's starting to sound a little peeved. No one is saying DFRPG is unique; I've just asked that you give support that the projects you've used Deekit for are similar enough to it, because your claim generally has been "it got a similar result in the end" rather than "I used a similar procedure."
"For details I'd recommend to seperately use Google Docs." What details?

@Momonga-sama sorry if I've missed this, but are you actually familiar with city creation in Dresden?

I'm still confused by the amount of text you dedicate to GDocs. It's not the tool you seem to intend to focus on, but you give more details about its use than you do about Deekit. And you already know I use it; I say so right there in the question.

@BESW Have you seen my answer?
I mean, before I deleted it?

And you haven't shown me anything you've done in Deekit. You've shown me what you've done in GDocs and what you've done in GIMP using unseen Deekit source materials.
@eimyr Yes. I was confused by the third paragraph about combinations of tablets and PCs.

it was all about being able to point at something, which is easy on a laptop, but hard on a tablet
therefore it would be better to use TV on two laptops and let the tablets handle skype

11:08 AM
@BESW I think DitV doesn't use d12 and d20?

@Zachiel No, but I didn't really see the need to go into that sort of detail on an "also ran."

1 hour later…
12:11 PM
@Wibbs Now, I am.

@Momonga-sama Having done it, or having read about it?

What exactly do you mean?

@Miniman Savage.

@Momonga-sama When you say that you're familiar with it, do you mean that you've done it, or that you've read about it?

Hopefully one doesn't need to actually DO stuff that you're talking about at all times?
If so, I'm in trouble.

@eimyr I don't know anything about it, but there are plenty of things where reading about it isn't really that helpful.

I have read about it and it doesnt differ from regular game development.
I can do it if you want without a problem.

Like I said, I don't know anything about it.

@eimyr I don't know about "always," but in my experience there's no amount of reading that replaces the first hour doing.

It's completely possible to understand ~everything~ from reading. But knowing what's important, what's impactful....

In this week's episode of Orphan Black, you can see an Atomic Robo poster in the comic shop.

@BESW I think Google Maps might provide what you're looking for re: DFRPG City Creation...

@Aether Cool! I'm getting some great and very diverse answers now.
It's gonna be rough choosing.

@Aether I felt this answer's structure was very accessible.

@eimyr I think I won't be using TeamViewer.
TeamViewer users are being hacked in bulk, and we still don’t know how http://arstechnica.com/security/2016/06/teamviewer-users-are-being-hacked-in-bulk-and-we-still-dont-know-how/ by @dangoodin001

I feel like a Google salesman :P
The Maps answer might end up pretty similar, except that you would be trading some drawing power for the ease of being able to do so straight onto the map.
