YAY I have a game this evening! A campaign start, actually!
:-D
@Anaphory cool :)
what system are you playing?
/universe
Fate Core, Star Wars Rebels.
@Anaphory player or gm?
Player!
Which is what makes this even better!
Gonna see Fate from that perspective for the first time!

Hey @Sejanus :)

hello, anyone here to clarify this question? rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/78871/…
i dont understand that elves still need 8 hours of long rest
Quote from PHB: Elves don't need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day (The Common word for such meditation is "trance."). While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.
They don't need to sleep but they need to rest.
the last sentence says that elves gain the same benefit a human gets from 8 hours of sleep. doesnt that mean that when an elf meditates for 4 hours he/she actually completes a long rest?
gimme a sec
sure
That Simanos guy just can't let it go...
19:04
You're right.
What do you need clarified, other than what's in the q and as?
well the questionmarks started after reading shem's answer, and legendarydude's answer isnt really clear enough to take away doubt. Elves take a long rest in 8 hours right?
It seems so.
Sleeping and longresting has nothing to do with eafh other.
I believe that there might be some rules for extended period without sleep re: exhaustion, elves would have easier time with their 4 hour trance.
i meant elves take a long rest in 4 hours
It doesn't seem so.
ow.. xD
19:08
Long rest seems to be a long rest and sleeping time sleeping time
but I don't know it for sure
do they really make this distinction in the rulebook? dont they just mean elves take shorter long rests?
in previous editions the same was true
dunno then
or i have always played this wrong
I'm sorry I can't be of more help.
You already seem to know more about this than I do.
Long Rest
A long rest is a period of extended downtime, at least 8 hours long, during which a character sleeps or performs light activity: reading, talking, eating, or standing watch
for no more than 2 hours.
hmm, there might be a point since it says at least 8 hours long
maybe it just means you have more free time
19:32
@Tijnkwan for instance, a pair of elves could hold the night's watch (4hr each) for the whole party...
ok, my whole idea of an elf changed after reading the asnwers in that question
But I think each group needs to come to a conclusion on its own. The rules on basic mechanics like sleep--no matter the race--and food have some pretty rough edges.
but after doing some research i came to the same conclusion
For instance, I recall when 5e came out doing some figuring and realizing that one could eat one good meal every fourth day without ever incurring a mechanical penalty. After that it was "well, if my group's going to worry about food we'll make up our own rules."
yeah i realized that aswell
sounds insane
luckily we have a druid who gives us goodberries everyday, now our problem is our over full bellies after a hard fight

@Tijnkwan @nitsua60 I guess the real question is "what is this game I'm playing about?" If it's about keeping a schedule of sleep, meals, washing clothes etc. you can forget about D&D, all you need is an Excel spreadsheet.

1 hour later…
21:29
@eimyr Ahh... you're not going to trick me like that- my doctor's been trying to get me to do something about my diet for years. Nice try, but I see through your plan! How much did he pay you, anyway? (he he he)
21:50
Good catch.

1 hour later…

@Anaphory Let us know how it goes?
