00:07
@BESW yes, also wanted to be a dragon
both at the same time is acceptable

1 hour later…
nice
01:56
I had to cancel this week's session. Now what will I do? I have this fever that cowbells can't fix...
16 hours ago, by Polyducks
The jungle is hot as @BESW lays his rifle down on a fallen tree stump. A curious @Waxeagle weaves his snaky body over the tree stump, and a flower to his left blinks. That's no flower... it's @MaliceVidrine!

"Clever girl." @BESW mutters before he's pounced upon by the velociraptor @MaliceVidrine. "REEEEE" screeches Malice. @Eimyr watches from the bushes ahead - the prey becoming the hunter.

@Doomedmind and her brother @Doppelgreener crouch low inside kitchen cabinets as @nitsua60 and @wibbs jump about the room, clicking their killer raptor claws on the ground and snarling at reflections.
Roll for shoes, Malice, roll for shoes....
I have a t-shirt that has a velociraptor in glasses and a graduation cap. You can guess what the text reads.
2d6
I'm rolling for BESM, so I'm willing to bet I just failed.
No shoes...
but 1 xp =)
02:01
d10
heyyyy, it does do other dice.
good to know.
it does
@MaliceVidrine did you see the plugin someone linked for Fudge dice?
02:02
it won't do arbitrary-sized dice, just standard polyhedral. And it only does up to so many... (a dozen, maybe?)
it was pretty recently linked XD
Out of curiosity....
4d3
Aw, no 3.
@MaliceVidrine so, I've got to admit: I can't. (Guess, that is.)
@nitsua60 - "Clever Girl"
02:06
=P
Completely SWAG-worthy question: in fantasy-adventure gaming (say, 5e if you must) where foraging is a thing... how long should we say the food thus-gleaned lasts?
are you saying someone wants to try to stockpile it?
@nitsua60 a few days perhaps?
(or more if the party is busy salting and smoking meat, drying fruits and berries, etal)
yeah, up to three days maybe, unless they take actual measures that would require acess to spices or packaging of some kind
@trogdor what about smoking meat and drying fruit?
@trogdor my son's really into the resource-game. So he goes hunting every once in a while, always checks in on how much food the party's got. But it occured to me today that we're on day 9 of the current trek....
02:14
@Shalvenay yeah that too
@nitsua60 ah. that's pretty cool actually -- I like it when the resource-game is factored into play vs. sitting "outside" it or ignored altogether
I think it depends a bit on how much time the party is willing to spend to make sure it lasts a while
@Shalvenay nothing in particular in terms of storage/preservation. I suppose a quick smoke over the evening's fire, if that's possible? Catch a deer, eat a good dinner while working on the rest?
@nitsua60 that might be possible, I'm not sure
I don't know for sure, but I think properly smoking meat to make it last a good deal of time takes at least a couple of hours
02:16
So if there's nothing in particular done, perhaps a day or two? (Some sort of weighted-average on food types, as I imagine fresh game will get... gamey pretty fast, vs tubers &c. being alright on the third-fourth day?)
@nitsua60 right
yeah
Don't forget if they have plenty of salt, just salting the ever living shit out of meat can also preserve it for ages.
3.5e survival checks get silly fast with the surplus
if they don't do anything it shouldn't last too long, depending what it is
02:17
@trogdor certainly I know when we smoke fish up in Maine we spend many hours, but how much is necessary vs. just being the right amount to make it a delicacy....
@MaliceVidrine I assume that's literal "ever living shit" =D
@nitsua60 yeah,.. I know a place that smokes meat for half a day
but that is just for the flavor
my wood elf cleric could easily make survival rolls sufficient to keep her entire party fattened up, basically
@nitsua60 - Of course. I'm sure everyone learned in Sunday school about the entity known as the Ever Living Shit that enters meat and rots it.
okay, we've got the new house-rule: 5seconds=2days.
@MaliceVidrine haha. actually, I think that's some bacteria or fungus who wants to eat the meat itsownself :p
02:19
@Shalvenay 5e rangers are like that--in favored terrain it's something like foraging for ten people while maintaining stealth at normal speed.
@nitsua60 xD
@nitsua60 I was doing this with a cleric ;)
@nitsua60 I am not sure why any food preservation is needed at that point XD
'cause my son's not playing a ranger--he bagged a deer nine days ago!
ah ok
@nitsua60 what class is your son playing?
02:20
lol
if he didn't do anything with it, it is definitely gone XD
straight-up fighter. Dwarven. With a warhammer.
@nitsua60 heheh
those sneaky dwarves
Dwarven Resilience totally works on spoilt food, right!
Battle Master or EK?
02:21
I reject your false premise: Champion!
(It's too bad PUG one-shots aren't so much a thing. Why aren't they a thing? Why hasn't the interwebs caught up yet?)
PUG?
@MaliceVidrine pick-up-game?
@nitsua60 ah
@Shalvenay - Yeah, pick-up game.
@MaliceVidrine Whaddya doin' right now? I know at least one person in this conversation had his regular Thursday game cancelled this evening.
02:23
@MaliceVidrine I have a 3.5e dungeon I've run oneshots in in the past, but it takes a bit more than one session because 3.5e :P
(Sorry, I know a couple of srs WoW players, and have picked up some of their lingo.)
srs?
serious
(just screwing with you)
02:23
srsly
@nitsua60 - nothing at the moment! Watching 30 Rock :P
Shalv? one-shot PUG?
I've got an hour and a half.
I should be doing my taxes, so I'll gladly do something else =)
Oh, right, taxes.
@nitsua60 running a dungeon in NW atm
*NWN
This year I actually need to hire a bloody accountant :/
02:25
@Shalvenay meh =\
(glad for you, though)
@nitsua60 do you have to itemize a 1040 or smth?
@MaliceVidrine what was the change necessitating the accountancy?
@Shalvenay I have to fill in a lot of numeric fields and click radio buttons on my computer.
@nitsua60 - My father died near the end of 2014, so 2015 was the year I got all the distributions from the estate.
@nitsua60 ah. I'm in the same boat
My problem is that I know enough math to know how low my ROI on time spent wrestling with the tax code is.
@MaliceVidrine I'm sorry to hear that. Doing alright?
(and tell me to shove off if I'm prying)
02:28
@nitsua60 - Oh, yeah, I'm fine. Hopefully no one is made uncomfortable by my saying this, but he was kind of a bastard and we hadn't talked in almost eight years.
@nitsua60 yeah, the tax code is a total spaghetti bowl. :P
(I'm an oversharer, so can be oblivious to stepping into others' bidness)
@MaliceVidrine ugh. Sorry to hear that, too. All happy families, and so forth....
Yeah, they're complicated. If anything bothers me, it's really the anticlimax :P
@MaliceVidrine do you mean the lack of a conclusion?
@Shalvenay luckily, for a family of five we're pretty easy: two incomes from the same corporation, tuition deduction, day-care expenditures, and lots of under-the-hood stuff that happens before the IRS ever gets involved (pre-tax stuff)
Yeah. I mean, I hadn't discounted the idea of reconciliation, even though it wasn't going to happen any time soon. And then one day he was just dead, and that was all the wrap-up there was.
Keepin' things light up in here! :P
02:32
@MaliceVidrine Ah... craptastic.
BUT. He had helped hose my chances at grad school, and now the inheritance makes it possible to pursue a doctorate if somewhere will take me. So at least that makes some amends.
I might be able to do a quick PUG after all though
@nitsua60 dungeon run canceled btw
Wooo!
Of course I only know how to play Fate these days.
@MaliceVidrine ah. I've dabbled in FATE but I don't really know how to use the system as-designed
most of that is that I don't intuit narrative pacing at all though
If you tell me how many dice to roll when I need to, I can do that :P
03:13
in Dice roller & formatting tests playground, Sep 1 '14 at 0:57, by doppelgreener
The roller supports: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20. You can roll up to four sets of XdY using one of those dice, where X is up to 9. X defaults to 1, Y defaults to 6.

I visited six stores today looking for fresh calamansi and a non-non-stick mini cupcake pan. Found neither.
Aww. I wish you luck in your quest.
03:23
I've got a non-stick pan, cupcake papers, and one bag of calamansi, so I can accomplish my goals.
I know calamansi is different from calamari, but now I really want calamari.
That's good, at least. One does what one must.
I finally remembered to get cake flour and a sifter the other day. Together with a kitchen scale, I now have everything I need to make Japanese cake recipes optimally.
I'd just rather have non-stick, and more calamansi so I can make a calamansi cake instead of an orange cake (the first bag of calamansi is going into the sparkling cranteade.)
I suppose that is a higher priority
to be fair, I liked the orange cake sample from last week
@Pixie Ooh, nice.
03:30
@Pixie like the small ones?
And other things that call for cake flour, but I don't see that as much when looking at American recipes because it's not super common to have more than one kind of flour, in my experience.
@trogdor You mean the sifter? I got the kind that's like a can with a mesh lining and a crank to force things through it.
I mean the kind of cake
Oh! A lot of different kinds of cake.
ah ok
The first thing I made was hotcakes. Mine were not quite that big or fluffy because I made 6 little ones instead of 2-4 big ones.
03:32
I am not eminently knowledgeable on all the different kinds, I just know a small type of Japanese cake exists that seems to have been prominently used in a lot of books I have read XD
@Pixie it may or may not be this
I have no idea XD
Pffff.
Pathfinder RPG Ultimate Intrigue is out and it is a major disappointment, except for the art.
@GuidingLight I was just going to say... "Homura???"
though I suspect it may be something akin to a Pound Cake
The way her legs are posed remind me a lot of, uh... the spoilery form of Homura, too.
I want to be Homura when I grow up.
03:39
I want to be Godzilla when I grow up
XD
@trogdor Remember anything else about it?
@Pixie they didn't tend to describe it much
Homura > Gojira
as far as I recall/recon, they made multiples at a time, they were small, and they were probably commonly made by peasants
@MaliceVidrine this is a matter of opinion, but you are welcome to yours XD
@trogdor - I will keep to mine. Since mine is correct. :P
03:41
Who doesn't want to be godzilla when they grow up.
Godzilla is awesome.
@MaliceVidrine :P
@Forrestfire Godzilla is suffering.
But radioactive breath
Sure, and circumstances that call for its regular use.
this is true
he does typically end up needing it
with liberal application of it too
I still wouldn't mind
XD
Godzilla or Mettaton, one of those XD
03:48
@GuidingLight You could always be a magical girl who wishes to be Godzilla. Double the suffering.
ooooh
XD
Or - A magical girl who is Godzilla, so you're finally complete.
What about godzilla wishing to be a magical girl
but making a wish already makes you one
apparently XD
03:50
yes
Glorious
I would say I don't believe someone did that, but I totally do/can believe it
Godzilla's clearly in mid-transformation, since all of its clothes are in ribbon form.
Yes. Phase one. The ribbons have just started to wrap.
03:56
gotta start somewhere
04:31
I've started watching Supernatural, and I can't tell if it's terrible. Just FYI.
lol
I think it was great
but for possibly different definitions of great than you would use XD
you will most likely find many differing opinions on it
Well, my definitions get weird. I think en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Gore_Police is one of the best movies ever made :P
On the one hand, I like Supernatural's stripped-down, no bullshit Monster of the Week approach (at least for Season 1).
On the other hand, there's no sign of a character arc in sight.
mm
you might not like it as much past,... season 3?
I think my boyfriend enjoyed SPN at first and then got tired of it. I've always been on the fence about even starting it because I hear that a lot, and also, I'm bad at watching long things.
but who knows, maybe you will find the changes in formula as amusing as I did
after a certain point they keep repeating a certain theme
04:36
As long as it's not as bad as the weird left turn that Fringe took.
that might not be a thing everyone would like about it
I'm doing real good if I finish a 26 episode series, these days.
@MaliceVidrine personally I stuck with Supernatural and not Fringe,.... sooooo
but it's going to come down to any difference in taste
What I would really like to see is a paranormal/supernatural show that can pull off the gravitas that so much of BSG did. But for some reason writers have figured out how to do it with robots and space ships, but not demons and wizards.
The closest I've found recently is Attack on Titan :P
I have never seen that
04:42
Ah, yes. I watched about 11 or 12 episodes of that. [points to her previous comment]
I have heard it is good, and that is about it XD
What I've seen is pretty darn good. I need to finish watching it one of these millenia.
@trogdor - I can babble about it! :D But I recommend just checking it out on Netflix or something. It has a bit of a slow start, but it rapidly gets really good.
@MaliceVidrine oh, is it on Netflix?
Yep. Or at least it is in the US.
04:44
ah
I don't know how its licensing works elsewhere....
it might not be here,... even though we are a US territory X(
Well, I'm crossing my fingers for you.
we get weird things like that happening sometimes
In the lucky way, not the "I'm lying" way.
04:46
I would not be surprised if it applied to Netflix carrying something here
Our Netflix seems to have a weird mix of US and Philippine licensing.
Attack on Titan is also on Crunchyroll and Hulu, both free. But again, it might block y'all because it thinks you're not US. Worth a shot.
@MaliceVidrine I figured
Hulu generally likes us.
it's all worth a shot
can check when I get home later
04:49
Best anime I've watched since Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
I'd honestly say the same. I can't think of anything new I've seen since has been that solid, other than AoT. But I spend so much time trying to catch up on the past 40 years, I never see much of the new stuff. :P
I haven't seen Hellsing: Ultimate, but I want to believe it's that solid. I was a big fan of the first series.
That's one I haven't seen/read, although I should.
Mostly I like it because Alucard is a sociopathic vampire demigod. And who doesn't like that?
(Despite being into vampires, I have seen exactly none of the classic vampire anime.)
04:57
Hellsing is certainly not a romantic take on vampires, which I appreciate. Even Vampire Hunter D played on the sort of classic victorian romantic version of vampires.
you should watch the Blade Anime
I liked it a lot
I actually haven't seen that. I will check it.
Oh, yeah. I need to see the Blade movies, too. That's one thing that's been on my list for a while.
And the TV show if you can get your hands on it.
The second one is directed by Guillermo del Toro, so it's totally worth watching if for no other reason.
04:58
I have seen the first two, I think, and then the Third I was warned away from
I rank 'em TV show; anime; and then the films in chronological order.
@BESW I second this, yes XD
I just need to remember these things when I have the time and inclination to watch. This is exactly why I need a MyAnimeList equivalent for regular TV and films.
Yeah, the third one was pretty rubbish. Only there to establish the TV series, which it did poorly.
But the second one had people with unpleasantly hinged faces! Win!
lol
I liked the second one
05:00
I got the impression the TV series happened in spite of the third film, actually.
I liked the first one too though
the TV series was the best
(It certainly went out of its way to distance itself from the film by doing an off-screen pre-series re-set of the status quo the third film had changed, and it contained none of the characters from the third film except Blade himself, thankfully re-cast.)
the Anime was great too
As far as vampire movies/shows go, they really need to have a series starring Kate Beckinsale's ass.
And maybe some vampires and stuff too.
....
05:05
Sorry, it's just.... That's what made the Underworld movies so good :P
well, doesn't that already exist then?
@trogdor - But that's not a series!
oh,... I was thinking of the fact it had several sequels
I think I only saw the first one
One of them didn't even have Kate Beckinsale, being a prequel.
and bits and pieces of another
probably the prequel, in fact (as the bits and pieces one)
05:09
Then there was the most recent one, which made no sense and seemed to exist just to have one in 3D, much like the second most recent Resident Evil film.
ugh
Resident Evil film
no thanks
hated all of any of the ones I happened to see anything of
But, on the plus side, the 3D Underworld movie had Beckinsale's ass in 3D :D
Anyhow: RPGs!
:p
Yeeeah. Let's try to avoid that sort of subject in chat in the future, eh? Sexual objectification doesn't make everyone comfortable.
@WrongOnTheInternet [wave] What's new?
Drinking and writing a 100 room dungeon
...Which came first?
05:23
Uh, the dungeon by about six months.
That is a potential chicken and egg there. :P
Gotta make every room absolutely fantastic, though, otherwise it's not worth writing.
@Pixie I was about to say something to a similar effect
that being said, maybe I don't have a license to make alcohol jokes
@WrongOnTheInternet i hope you consider the various values of 'fantastic' available - consider that, for instance, movie pacing is often helped by lulls in the action and scenes in which not all that much happens. adventures can benefit from similar breaks. might be best to think of it that every room must contribute to the adventure being very enjoyable, or otherwise not counteract that goal.
05:27
@doppelgreener Yeah, I
I'm only actually writing 65 of said rooms. The rest are empty, to be filled randomly or at the other referee's whim.
These rooms also often feel empty, having only something to interact with or generally not having a monster present, too.,
@trogdor Why not?
I don't drink alcoholic things
Ah. Don't think you need a license to make fun of drinking or people who drink, though.
you indeed do not XD
I don't do it often though, that time would have just been too good to pass up if Pixie had not already beat me to it
@BESW - No promises, but taken into consideration.
@WrongOnTheInternet Speaking of, in such a large dungeon, you might want to use a technique called Gating that's used in video games. You move forward, and the area behind you becomes cut off to you somehow. This helps assure people they're going in the right direction. Could be done at a few points in a few points:
- have a trial and then the room begins to collapse, and the only way out of it is forward.
- a troll shuts those big heavy doors and bars them from the other side, oh no! though this might be equally tempting to smash down.
depending on your system (whichever D&D edition, or Dungeon World, or something else like Masters of Umdaar) and the capabilities you imagine the player characters will have at the time, various "gates" will be more effective than others, and some will be outright ineffective (the party takes it as a challenge to backtrack).
05:43
that might be a little harder to pull off outside of a video game, but it certainly seems like a useful technique
i agree
a one hundred room dungeon would benefit from them at some points (like, maybe a gate after 20, 40, 60, and 80 rooms) so as to tell them "you know those other 40 rooms? they're not relevant now. don't worry about them anymore. there definitely isn't anything back there you need to concern yourself with. relax, and keep moving."
@doppelgreener The dungeon is already separated into wings and has suggested goals. It has some monsters and challenges that are appropriate for 1st level characters, and some that even 10th level characters will have trouble with. The ideal here is for low levels to pick their battles very carefully and get the high risk, high reward treasure when they're stronger.
Or you can replace the normal Euclidian space of the dungeon with some sort of directed topological space, so that only travel in one direction is physically possible.
The point of this dungeon is exploration however, not a set goal. Having a large number of rooms, paths, and approaches helps accomplish this.
...I once had a setpiece in a cubical room that rotated so a new face was "down" every turn.
05:46
Fun!
This is a dungeon intended to be introduced as either a part of a Sandbox campaign or a One-shot.
Ok. Dividing it into wings could also be pretty good.
That's more or less the equivalent of giving people levels to choose. :)
Might be fun to have a wing that destroys itself, collapses, caves in, sinks into a bog, or so on at a certain point. (They destroy / remove something, the magic of which was holding it together.) And another that is only accessible after they tackle something in two other wings.
@doppelgreener If the players accomplish one of the dungeon's two "goals" (accomplishing said goals is bad for them) the dungeon changes in a massive way.
coooooool :D
Basically, a smart group of players is going to be able to win without making a single die roll. An average group of players is going to trip over all the awful things and make an absolute mess of their party and the surrounding countryside.
05:50
hahahaha, fantastic
That sounds very promising.
Are you building this with a particular system in mind?
@doppelgreener Any OSR system, although my particular ridiculously extensive set of houserules is what I'm using.
That is, D&D that's AD&D 2E or before.
Ah right! I was going to MAP the dungeon so I had a better idea of what rooms fit where.
06:09
@BESW In our last session, one of my players pulled another of our players back out of hell. He, uh, failed his san checks.
My first Cthulhu Dark game, one player figured everything out. She immediately tried to hack someone's arm off while screaming "Hold still! I'm trying to save world! And maybe you!"
Minutes later she was using her bare hands to lower the dire artefact into a furnace and hold it still long enough to melt.
Then everything exploded.
But hey, she saved the world.
That's totally awesome
Heh. At the end of my first tremulus game, one of the characters invited a fire vampire into his body, put on an amulet binding it in place, dove deep into the ocean and handcuffed himself to a shipwreck there.
In other news, my Campaign Coins have arrived, they are absolutely amazing, and I have no clue as to what I'll actually do with them. But shiny!
Oooh.
Nice box, too.
06:15
It really is! Another kickstarter. There's a reason I'm broke.
Oh, man. I love that.
A few months ago I splurged and spent about $10 on four plastic chopstick bowls to hold peoples' dice on the table.
And we have an old wooden salad bowl to roll dice in, to reduce dice-under-couch syndrome.
@Magician I do love those.
I have a small bag of like 30 or so I picked up at a 'con when Campaign Coins were a new thing.
When not in use, my dice and tokens are in four different bags; a Crown Royal bag for the d6s, a Fate Core bag for the fudge dice, a velvet jewellery bag for the Fate tokens, and an embroidered armbag for everything else. Between games they sit, with the chopstick bowls and the index cards, in the salad bowl.
I store my dice in a big die.
Kinda like this, but bigger.
06:25
@Pixie ok i gotta do it: yo i heard you like dice so we put yo dice in dice so you can roll while you roll
4
@doppelgreener A perfect opportunity.

Or that.
06:46
That reminds me, I've been thinking of running... something lately. I don't know what yet. I'm just down to only one active RP and getting bored. :P As usual, probably just a... several shot. Because oneshots always wind up taking like 3 sessions online.
07:27
@BESW I hope it isn't Blizzard soon
I would soooo love to do another Storium thing
even if I end up narrating it
07:42
I plan to also run a Storium game for my non-SE friends scattered across the world, probably Weird Fruit.
