5:37 PM
Do you ever find yourself wondering where some RPG jargon came from?

@Althis What the jargon you speak of?

Like, why do we call the separation screen a "shield"?
Who was the first person to come up with it?
Did they realize they would be informing people's collective consciousness for generations?

Depends a lot on the term. That one I don't know, but I'm not sure it's RP-specific.

@Althis It "Shields" your information?
Plus it sounds cooler lol

I can recall being told to shield our tests in school. It definitely has a general sense.

5:53 PM
Also... Proc.
Anyway, these are just the kind of things I get caught up in from time to time.

Etymology is neat!

@Pixie, I do thing so!

@Althis Proc?
Like this ability procs this other ability?

Also, actually reading through Hot Guys Making Out (an RP linked recently, cannot link on phone P:) because I have nothing better to do with the rest of my lunch. It really gets the source material. There are some things I don't care for, but it breaks down the appropriate structure quite well.

It is a term that refers to a special effect that has a chance of happening.
Usually associated to equipment.

5:57 PM
Right it is short for something... one moment

@Pixie What structure?

Process or procedure, on proc.

11
Q: What does PROC mean?

DanI understand what it is, like an item proc that delivers an effect on hit for example. But what does PROC actually mean? Does it stand for something or is it short for another word?

Wait...
What are even Multi-User Dungeons?

@Althis The narrative structure of the Boys Love genre.

6:01 PM
@Pixie, They make love in Dungeons?

@Althis Oh baby your mossy walls are so sexy

On phone, can't @ specifically, and you posted that before I noticed. :P
For MUDs, I gotta run so big oversimplification here, but think text based MMO.

6:18 PM
MUDs...low roleplay text based (dial in historically) dungeon crawls. MUSHes were usually higher roleplay

6:35 PM
@Althis MUDs are named after MUD, MultiUser Dungeon, which was a remake of an old adventure game Dungeon but supporting multiple players over a network
they were a popular genre of games for a while. basically text adventures with other players that could appear in rooms and do stuff
text based MMO is pretty accurate but some were graphical

MUDs are weird

6:57 PM
I always wonder where "lands" (untranslated, popular here in Italy) could find their place in the MUD/MUSH categorization.

What's wrong with MUDS?
Everquest's base code started from a MUDS code

7:12 PM
Yes and no

Some, as in there's people who does that, not as in "more than one person playing D&D"

You get all sorts really, some who treat it like D&D some who treat it as a social platform with a bit of character leveling and such in between and those who treat it purely as a combat system
and those who use it to get their freak on

7:43 PM
MUDs still exist?
Excuse my ignorance

@Tashio does that mean what I do think it means?

@Tashio, I was curious once about what kind of thing a MUD has in common with a tabletop RPG

I need to understand what is and what isn't a MUD
Is it a mud if the only programming is automated dice rolling, and everything else is described by players and GMs following rules? (like, Players can't introduce NPCs)

@Zachiel Yup it does

Well let me describe a game I play and let's see if it's a MUD or not

7:48 PM
@AlexMitan It has a few things, yes you have immortals which will run quests and such, which have impact on various levels from a personal level, a city level or even a world level.

(I'll be slow, I'm playing in two of these games at the same time, writing here when I can)

Otherwise players do their own thing and make their own roleplay amongst themselves.
The actions of players can change the world unlike traditional graphical MMO's where most adventures are set in stone and pre-writen
Thing is you have so many different code bases for MUD's alone, then you add in Moo's and Mush's and all their variants

Do you guys actually play MUDs?

I do

Which one?

7:58 PM
I am an Admin on a mud that's been running since 1996
Dark and Shattered Lands, www.dsl-mud.org
dsl-mud.org port 4000 or 443

I have no idea what it's like, but I feel like trying something new

It's based on DIKU code base, but almost all code has been modified since.
RP mud but has both kingdoms and clans for pvp

Do you mind if I ask some questions about it and such?

Sure

How does it... work?
Is it more like a RP chatroom or is it a very clearly mechanical game
How can players change the world?
Or... erm, how is it different from a text-based adventure game?

8:01 PM
Okay you create a character for starters.
It's similar except that there is an engine behind it which controls the combat and such
Players get involved in RP that's run by Immortals and sometimes the outcome of that changes things in the world.
Example the current world quest has the God of Honor imprisoned by the evil gods, and good and evil are striving to either free him or prevent it. If good fails he may be slain forever

I play MU*s, yes. But I have a terrible time finding one that suits my tastes, so not actively.
Iron Realm games come close-ish, but there are still a couple things I'm meh on, and the player base is super creepy if you RP a female character. =w=

Yea Pixie
It's something that plagues a lot of muds

I'll try one tomorrow
Sounds like a very hit-or-miss thing but it sounds quite appealing to me :)
Thank you guys very much

Thankfully we've not had any issues in a while of female players being harassed.

Yeah, true. I've had the worst experiences by far in Achaea though.

8:09 PM
Do you have some sort of housing or hide-out?
I'm a bit of a coziness freak sometimes

@AlexMitan Definitely worth a shot! I'm still hoping I can find one that suits my tastes someday.

@Pixie you've been on DSL?

And that depends on the game.

Clan halls for those who are clanned, unless you are a loner
But you can buy a house with enough money

@AlexMitan DSL?

8:11 PM
@Pixie A new player that recently joined said he was on another mud where he got charmed and forced into a sexual situation and which he complained the imms told him to suck it up and RP it out.
@Pixie Dark and Shattered Lands, a MUD I'm an admin on

@Tashio I can't properly express my rage (at the offending mods, not your MUD, can't specify messages on phone xD).
Hmmm. I feel like I've heard that name. I'm not sure. I will poke it later.

@Pixie Yea I was shocked. We have very specific rules about that sort of thing, and actions like that would get you a very quick trip to denyville.

I... I dunno how surprised I am, but certainly enraged.
Good to know your game's stance on it though.

I'm thinking of trying out a bit today, sorry if I don't have a lot of time
hmm.. should I go for Illusionist or Thief?

Yea Keep it to private rooms/houses, nothing in public, and even then nothing that's considered illegal, even if consentual.
@AlexMitan There are 5 base classes, Warrior/Mage/Thief/Cleric/Bard
You pick one of those then level up and after level 11 usually level 51 you reclass into one of the advanced classes. Base classes are usually not worth playing.

8:18 PM
raises finger I would like, please, to play an acquisition specialist, if I may
Or some kind of illusionist
Oh
Hm, I hope I won't get too overwhelmed

Illusionists are cool, roll a mage, reclass at 51 into illusionist

I think I'd rather try tomorrow, it's kind of late and I don't want to just have to interrupt

We have a newbie channel as well as ask/answer, most of our playerbase is friendly and willing to help out

Unable to connect: security error.
Help

Yea 10:20pm here, heading to bed shortly.
What you connecting with?

8:21 PM
..Chrome?

Oh you using the play the game link on the website?

Yep
Are you affiliated with something called ThePlanet.com?

Nope
You at work or somewhere your link might be restricted for some reason?

I'm using a protection thingy
hold on

Yea, it might be blocking port 443

8:24 PM
Ah, there we go
ThePlanet seems to be a linker between connections
ok, here we go after all
I won't have long
so I'll be back tomorrow, but thank you both!

Ah, it might be the client software
If you're going to be playing for any length of time I'd recommend getting a mud client like mudlet or zmud/cmud
mudlet is free, zmud has a free version and cmud is pay for.
But the website is good to get your feet wet

Erm, is Kender Thief decent for a starter?

Yes, they hit like wet noodles but are good defensive. Can't be assassin's. Nightshades are kinda meh atm need some fixing which is in the pipelines. Ninkja should be in within a month or so so could wait for those.
We generally recommend something like Crusader which is a cleric reclass for new players, it's a decent hitter and casts well plus healing.
Good for learning your way around.

Chaotic...Neutral? I don't know, it's super late... is it a problem if I just mess around on this char and make a new one tomorrow?

Sure
Neutral is good, it opens you up to most kingdoms and most of the non restricted clans
cool name :)

8:30 PM
......you saw it?
I have no idea what I'm doing, it's so late

--> Newbie alert! someone sighted.
--> Kalorrei@IP-ADDRESS.ro new player.

Yep.. just trying stuff out
profession?

Whatever
It's for RP
has no mechanical influence

I'll probably make a new char with actual RP to it tomorrow, right now I want to get a feel for how things work
but probably go to bed before I even finish
because it's so late and I have stuff to do, I'm so sorry

No worries

8:33 PM
Thanks!
Hope it's not fishy I made a female, I feel a bit more comfortable that way I guess

Not at all
can tell you probably 80% of the female characters on the game are played by males

Hah, alright

Hell my main mortal character is female, created her years ago to just be a break from my immortal and she ended up leading a clan and being a pretty well know.

Hah, alright
Ugh, I'm too sleepy to be able to read anything beyond a tiny bit of chat... I'll come back tomorrow morning

NP, I'll be around at work

8:36 PM
I need to go, thank you very much @Tashio!

So probably a bit distracted by just ping me and I'll catch it

Good night everyone1

@AlexMitan Night sleep well

9:19 PM
Hey.

Hey

Might I sift through your collective memories for a second?
Specially yours, @BESW.

..Aw.

user61230
Hello!

Depends what it is.

9:20 PM
Yours too Sandwich-kun.
I am trying to make a set of attributes and find the calculations that make them work for a generic RPG.
Something really simple.

Alright
Shoot

Do you guys know of any tutorial or reference material that could help me?

That really depends on your RPG

No googling needed, I just want to know if you've ever come across one or know one from the top of your head.
@Sandwich, a really generic thing. Str, Agi, End, how each affects health, attack value, hit chance.
That kind of stuff.

user61230
It's probably going to vary a ton based on what you need out of the attributes and calculation.

user61230
9:22 PM
Ah, so sort of a general D&D-esque thing?

For what RPG are you calculating these for

I have to make a game to show at a thing tomorrow night, and I just want it to be really simple.

Okay

Okay off to bed catch you on the flip side

@Emrakul D&D-esque, yes.

9:22 PM
For every 2 of a stat make it offer 1 of the stat that determines final damage
For 2 strength that makes one attack

I just didn't want to have too much D&D in it, because modern D&D is really complicated.

For 2 agi thats one ranged attack

I want something really simple.

For 2 dex thats 1 accuracy
For 2 vit you get 1 defense
2 int is 1 magic attack
2 wisdom is 1 magic defense

I've thought of that, but you still have to make all of this affect hit chance.

9:24 PM
2 charisma is -1% from NPC shop prices

If you want it to be really simple, why are you making a system that has all those fiddly bits?

@BESW Because that is what people think when they think of RPGs.

BESW raises a good point
1 str could equal 1 damage
1 dex could be 1 chance to hit

user61230
Maybe a bit more context might help. What do you need the system to do?

@Sandwich Shouldn't hit chance take your enemy into consideration?

9:26 PM
It doesnt have to
You dont have to even implement evasion into a game system

@Emrakul So here is the thing, I am going to teach a class tomorrow. Python 101.

You could add a random miss chance

user61230
(Because right now, it looks like you're stuck in a paradox of "really easy to teach" and "want it to feel like it has a lot of fiddly bits.")

And I want to teach the kids by teaching them how to program a simple text based game.

9:27 PM
And just have strength be your stat
Strength, CON, and INT

It has to be something that they can recognize as an RPG.

user61230
@Althis If it's a programming task, creating a Roll for Shoes engine might be a good one.

user61230
It's lightweight and simple, and it's very recognizable as a role-playing game.

@Emrakul Kinda hard to program because you need to keep adding skills, and they cannot simply write an enemy and fight it.

user61230
But for a 101 programming class, it sounds sufficient to get people thinking about architecture and code.

9:29 PM
RFS is just too on the fly, and there is no easy way to support this kind of narrative freedom in a 101 class.
I needed something closed, well structured, and with simple math.

user61230
Hmm... it sounds like what you're interested in having them actually program is the board-game/war-game element of an RPG.

Say, anyone here remembers how AD&D worked?

user61230
Have you considered that an RPG might not be the direction to go, but rather something like Dice Wars?

user61230
Or maybe a general fight-the-thing board game?

@Emrakul Dice wars?

@Althis Lasers & Feelings might be better.

I think life is too short to calculate Thac0 @Althis :I

@Emrakul Yeah, I was thinking about something really simple. Like, hey kids, make a scene object. Write what you want the game to say when you enter it, and make a pointer to the connected locations.

user61230
Are you interested in the story aspect of an RPG at all?

And, "Kids, here is an enemy, as you can see it is a player object, and you just plug in this A.I. module(that I am going to program tonight, that is.)"
@Emrakul Not really. Just the mechanical parts as you mentioned.
@Emrakul What this is I don't even...
@BESW This might me interesting, yeah.
Too narrative, though.

9:36 PM
A simple text adventure is the first thing I learned Javascript with.

@Pixie Did you have stats or did you just walk around with an inventory??

No stats, and it was mostly writing responses to commands. I recall it being very easy to grasp, but then I don't know how it would play out in Python, which I haven't really done direct work with.

D&D 1st edition had saving throws already?
Really?

D&D didn't emerge from a vacuum; it started as a direct translation of wargaming rules, modified for individual characters rather than groups of combatants.

So Saving Throws are a thing in wargaming?

9:47 PM
I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing so. At any rate, it should be unsurprising that the earliest iterations of D&D had some "advanced" forms, because they were drawing on prior experience with similar concepts.

Saving throws were things like
Against death
There was one for spells too I remember
That sheet brings me back though
My first D&D character was a cleric

@Sandwich, did you really play D&D 1st Edition?

I played it when I was 8 with my friends dad

And that was... how many years ago?

9:52 PM
For one second there I thought you were an ageless vampire chick.
My mistake then.

How do you know I'm NOT though

I don't even know what kind of sandwich you are.
I guess I just trust you?

user61230
Baloney!

Now that I broached the subject, what kind of @Sandwich are you even?

Wait. If Sandwich was a chich, she'd make herself. So she must be an ageless god vampire chick. (Ok, the pun was lame and sexist, I know. Bear with me.)

9:56 PM
The cursed kind that just makes you hungrier and hungrier
When you eat it it always reappears on your person
And you cant get rid of it

@Sandwich That sounds like an awesome curse.
Unless you stink.

I honestly have no idea what they were selling.
But I want it.
Pure, nostalgia.

Ben
10:27 PM
Morning
@Sandwich We had a similar one in one of our other games, the Wizards Tower had a curse on it (mistakenly discovered/placed by the previous tenant) where the occupant had a sudden insatiable desire for cream buns...

At least the cream buns didn't slowly kill him :P

Ben
Well the last guy died from engorgement...
So... yeah...
One of the PC's (who the player seems to have left the game) is now the current occupant of the Wizard's Tower...
[Just quickly double check the meaning of "engorgement"]
Ok, yes... engorgement. Word of the Day

10:51 PM
It was pretty clear what it meant from context
Bad way to die though
At least cream buns are delicious

Ben
That is a bonus

@Ben Is that even a viable way to die?

Ben
@Althis I should think so.

@Ben That is a bunus, really

Ben
@Zachiel OK... so a "bunus" is either a) an "origin" or "basis"; or b) "a term for one paranormal group trying to one up another by stealing their hard earned investigation sites by following what they do on face book and stealing their ideas."

10:58 PM
@Zachiel Thank you for the bun of the day.

Ben
Oh. OH.

@Ben XD

Ben
badum-[slip... crash... sound of a cymbal rolling away]

I would lol but parents are asleep.

Ben
@Althis so how goes the adaptation of limb-based-wounding-systems?

11:03 PM
My time is up for today.
I am doing other stuff now.
I save one hour of my day to work on game design + writing every day.
Then I just have to let it go.
Else it will drive me MAD.
MAAAD I TELL YOU!
MAAAAAAD!
*hops away in a very large top hat."

Ben
I feel that [fist-bump]

11:17 PM
@Althis I... I can't get these memories out of my mind. And some kind of madness has started to evolve. ♫

My players managed to do a lot of silly things tonight. One was supposed to distract a desk clerk, but managed to pull his weapon and kill a guard who asked him to stand down ... Another player decides to come to his aid, and gets him self implicated as an accessory. In the mean time, the first player kills another guard and threatens to kill the clerk as well.
This whole stunt was supposed to end in a few minutes but it is now a full fledged murder/hostage situation.
The three other players are none the wiser and assume the first two completed their task and decides to go for the BBEG alone.
Being only three, they don't managed to do well and are all knocked out after some interesting battle.

I hope the policemen don't shot the players down trying to save the hostage and they're all still alive for you next gaming night (XD)

The first two gets taken down by the city forces after a pursuit through the city.
They're both unconscious.

(Forgive me, a pun on players/characters is always mandatory)

So the night concluded with all players down, three at the mercy of the BBEG and his henchmen, and the other two at the mercy of the law/possible already dead.
@Zachiel Of course. :P It's a cool situation.

11:23 PM
Which system, anyway?

Homebrew, based on 3.5 but classless.

For you to have cops and a BBEG, migth it be WoD?
Oh ok

I'm trying to decide what to do. On one hand, it's an entertaining end to an almost two year campaign, and we get to start out with some new fresh characters. On the other, they would likely enjoy keeping their characters some more.
I usually go by the rule of thumb that I never let players die from my own mistakes. But this is a series of bad mistakes by my players.
Killing innocents, not standing down, running from the guards, trying to take on the BBEG alone.

heheh.

@William I have an idea that could salvage your campaign

11:30 PM
I'm open to ideas :D

Have them all wake up dead, on the Astral plane, with minimal knowledge of how they came to be there other than the fact that they're 100% sure that they died somehow.
Then have them go to the plane of a good deity as petitioners to petition for a return to life. Make them work for it.
The astral plane has portals that lead to every plane in the planar cosmotology
They could screw up and end up in the demonweb pits
It would be an interesting time to say the least

I have two questions.
A. Why are RPGs so crazy all the time?

Ben
@Sandwich That's actually how one of our campaigns started.

and B. Why is my life not an RPG right now?

Ben
@Althis Who says it's not.....?

11:33 PM
...
I ROLL FOR INITIATIVE!

@William'MindWorX'Mariager Other idea. The prisoners tell the cops what happened and the BBEG is a menace big enough that they understand and save punishment for later (escape before that happens might be another adventure maybe). Rescue squad.
@Ben Roll me a bluff check, please.

Ben
1d20

Ben
Bluff goes off INT right?

11:34 PM
CHA

Ben
OH. Excellent.
that's a +3
@Zachiel So that's a 12

@Althis roll Sense motive

Hmm, both those ideas have sort of been done. They botched up an elemental combat trial and I had them retrace the steps in a spirit world and argue for what went wrong and how to fix it. It was quite interesting. And I've had them imprisoned before as well, although on their own terms at the time.

Ben
@Sandwich [ahem] META - he seems to already believe it, I'd argue that he has no motive to sense...
It's all down to how well I delivered it... right?

I could do the planar thing as a final ending thing, but I'd risk this ending being less interesting. I'm sort of in a golden opportunity at the moment. :P

11:37 PM
@Ben hey, we're playing D&D, not "convince your DM"

Ben
@Zachiel [scoff] fine. [pout]

Well it depends on how big of a bang you wanna go out on

@Ben Pay me a pizza and we can go your way.

Ben
@Zachiel Hawaiian, Meta lover's or Supreme?

11:39 PM
I'll have to ponder what I end up doing. In any case we had a very interesting evening/night. :P

@Ben Ok, being Italian I should just ask you what's that [snip] you're trying to put on my pizza but since my favourite one has french fries on it I'll just ask what the toppings are. I suppese applepine for hawaiian?

Well good luck finding something!

All triggered by a player deciding the best way to distract a desk clerk was to embed his sword in the desk. :P
And subsequently executing a guard which sort of took me by surprise. :P

@William'MindWorX'Mariager -- at least your player didn't waltz into a yard and uncouple the propane tank car with the bad handbrake from the rip track, sending it rolling away into the middle of town

@William'MindWorX'Mariager we had a WoD campaign ending with a guy in our party blowing up the bunker we were in before we could talk with God. The campaign ended with a boom. Literally.

11:42 PM
Both great examples of why RPGs are fun :P

@William'MindWorX'Mariager -- that was actually a hypothetical; I'm not sure if I'll run "elf in a railyard" again or not

Ben

The guy who played a conspiracy theorist under pills who wanted the government to stop hiding God from humanity was a little pised off. Half dead, with me trying to revive him, the device to speak to god at less than 50 inches from us... and we blow up.

Ouch
But memorable, and that's what matters

@Ben I think I'll go buffalo mozzarella and dried tomatoes.

Ben
11:46 PM

also, there's always "I Got A Druid for Mother's Day" ;)

D&D 5e: I just rolled 3 15's 2 12's and a 14 for starting attributes... WTF DICE?

@HadesHerald That's why we don't roll for stats anymore
Anyway, if the dice id 4d6 discard lowest, those are perfectly fine and expectable values.

Yeah, 4d6 keep the best 3

Most probable result is 13 IIRC
with 14 being slightly more probable than 12 but rapidly decreasing. Let me graph it in AnyDice

Ben
11:57 PM
@HadesHerald Last time I did that I had trouble getting over 10

I removed a watermark with photoshop yesterday
Shutterfly thinks its gonna get 26 dollars for three pictures

I also rolled 3 crits in 6 attack last night
with my d20

Must be Opaque chessex :P

What?

My players prefer rolling stats.

11:58 PM
What color and brand is your die?

Ben
@HadesHerald You may want to start coddling that die

I prefer the standard distribution thing suggested in one of the D&D books.

Grey and NO clue

Chessex melts these beads into dice
But sometimes when they melt the dice the materials don't completely melt even though they're molded properly
So it changes the weight distribution of the die
If you roll a lot of 20's with that particular die it might be a bad(good) die
