19:00
It's set in the biggest metropolis of the whole continent, Waterdeep. It's on the west coast, near where "The Sword Coast" is written
ok. This looks like fun :) When do you want to start?
Waterdeep is a huge city, with lots of magic shops, guards, guilds, opportunities and dangers. The most (in)famous thing in the city is a ginormous dungeon called Undermountain, created and mantained by a wizard gone mad
MMMh I have no idea. First time I embark into something like this
surely not tonight
Neverwinter (the mmorpg) finally ended patching
Ok.
Is there any limits on my character I make? Gestalt or no Gestalt?
I'd go for no gestalt
Ok. Anything else?
Core books only. Stuff like that.
19:06
I'm not sure about manuals. Core is ok, Magic of faerun probably so, at least for spells. For prestige classes, I need to look.
Ok. I will find the race and class and run it by you for approval.
Ellipsis is three periods in a row (originally with spaces between, more recently without), and it is also the omission of a thing--a word or phrase that is necessary for grammar but can be inferred, or an unnecessary scene in a film, or the like.
Ellipses is the plural of ellipsis and of ellipse (a kind of closed curve more commonly known as an oval).
@Aaron FR has his peculiar subclasses for elves, halflings and dwarves, apart from the usual ones
@Zachiel Ok. I will look at the races of FR book then.
elves are moon elves (+2dex -2con), curious people. Sun elves (+2int -2con) arrogant elven court elves. Wood elves and wild elves (I alwas mix them. +2dex -2int and +2str +2dex -2int -2cha -2con)
dwarves have shield dwarves (usual) and gold dwarves (+2con -2dex)
halflings have swiftfoot (base), strongheart (no vs. fear bonus, bonus feat), wild (no vs fear bonus, short range telepathy. diffident of other races)
and then the setting has some aasimars and tieflings, especially from the egyptian-like Mulhorand, and genasi, who are half-elemental spawn
19:25
Speaking of maps, I just got one of my players to help me with mapping using Fractal Mapper. It's great. I feel more appreciated when my players actually want to help me out.
Fractal Mapper has one flaw though. If I define a view area on my machine, it'll be different on his, since it doesn't take resolution into account when displaying.
19:37
@Aaron Oh, don't get equip with starting money, FR has a by region table for that
@Zachiel Ok so only do stats and skills and the like. What kind of rolls do you use for str, dex and such? I am used to rolling 6 sets of 4 D6 dice and adding the top three together and re rolling any 1s.
I don't want that much randomness and I don't want to overlook rolls, get the standard point buy, normal power level.
@Zachiel Ok.
@Zachiel 25 points? The book seems to contradict itself though
let me see
It says scores below 14 cost 1 for 1 but the chart says 9 =1 10=2 11=3 etc etc
Unless it is saying that is the total cost it will take to reach that score.
19:50
I think it's the total.
Reading it again after saying that I think it is as well.
12=4, 14=5, 15=7 or something like that?
Yea but 15 = 8
Ah
It's been a while. :P
I usually go with the standard array.
Yea I have never used this method so it was new to me.
Arrays? I don't see that.
I see an Elite array
19:52
There should be a standard array as well. Elite just cuts down the power some more IIRC.
My players love rolling though, so when it's up to them it's the regular 4d6 ditch lowest. :P
They like to keep it raw and don't mind playing crippled characters.
25 points it is
We have player who currently has 7 strength.
I don't really like crippled characters. It's not like D&D has some way to compensate the loss
@Zachiel Yup. I just miss read the chart thing thinking it cost that many points to improve from the last score.
Ah, this isn't D&D so in my case, it's not so bad. :)
19:54
10 is the average human so anything above that is stronger then normal.
If I'm playing D&D I'm always using standard array.
7 isn
what is it, @William'MindWorX'Mariager?
@Zachiel Homebrew game. :) With focus on sandbox playing.
Each character is on their own just the six stats, health and mana.
I think the standard ("elite") array is too rigid but IIRC it's made with a 25 point buy
19:55
Then it's up to the players which skills they'd like to mix and match.
Weapons and spells are also skills they can choose from :)
It's pretty straight forward and very loose. However, it can be horribly abused, so if you have an abusive group, the system isn't suitable.
This is going to be different for me. I am not used to having a stat below 12 X)
I was once playing in a game were they used "all 8, add 30 points", no scaling
most people went 18 18 18 8 8 8 or something like that
another relevant part of the players had 18 16 10 10 14 8
and a girl I know had 12 12 12 14 14 14
she was pretty useless ç.ç
Str, Dex, Con Wis Cha. What am I missing?
Ah Thank you I was having a brain fart.
@Zachiel If I choose a claric class can I choose the domains I want after you approve them?
20:05
Ah, I forgot this one
in the FR all divine classes must chose a god
the list is quite extensive
and it has some extra domains
I can help you with the concept if you tell me what you are looking for, be it domains or what you want the character to do
I had some specific domains in mind from a book I have that is for the divine classes.
Let me find them one moment.
@Zachiel Crafting domain and Metal domain
are you going with a specific race?
@Zachiel Haven't picked it yet.
I have the human deity Gond (everybody can pick human deities) or some LE or N dwarven deities (I'd like a good or neutral party) or a NG gnome one
are you home now?
20:21
Not yet. I get off at 4 and have to bike home. About another 50 min to an hour.
Would you be against me making a character who can craft magical items?
I would love to be able to make a little golem :) It is something I wanted to do but my last DM wouldn't let me
@besw re: Core alone. Ha, careful you don't say Beetlejuice three times :)
@Aaron Depending on what type of campaign you're doing, that's more of a long run goal. :)
yeah, I don't think we will get there from level one
You could look for the Artificer Class/Prestige Class perhaps, if it's allowed.
It's aaron who wants to keep it simple. I'm not really familiar with anything Eberron related (save for races)
20:25
Well I knew it wasn't possible right off.
The problem with crafting is that it takes time
Artificer is Eberron related, so that's a plus.
The resone I asked was my last dm was completely against the idea so I wanted to make sure Zachiel was ok with it.
Homunculus
At fourth level Artificers may craft a homunculus companion. A homunculus is similar to a Wizard's familiar but more intelligent and generally better equipped to a single task.
I think they are not the only ones who can
20:27
If you can get permission to do it, the Artificer is definitely what you want if you like tinkering. :)
At which level do the disciple of gond prestige class get the Gondman?
I think there's a Craft Construct feat as well, so it's open to most, but Artificer does it good I think, and is part of the core Eberron setting. :)
Though introduced as a prestige class for gnome arcane spellcasters in the Magic of Faerûn, artificers are a standalone class in the Eberron campaign setting. Artificers are heavily written into the Eberron world with their own Dragonmarked house (House Cannith). The common people in the metropolis of Sharn and other Eberron cities rely heavily on artificers to maintain the magical infrastructure. Artificers represent many of the high-magic elements of Eberron as a campaign setting.
It's a supporting character class, you can read about it here.
Anyways, Dungeon/Game Master decides, I just wanted to pitch in. :)
I'm a really unsure DM at times
I don't really know what could ruin a game or make it too hard to run but I donìt want to limit my players too much
If you're not that steady, stick with the core classes and whatever classes you approve of.
I do the same @Zachiel And as a player if I notice my character is broken in a way that makes it not fun I work with the DM to fix it.
20:36
I recall a player wanted to play a Warblade in 3.5. It was a cool class, but it really overshadowed most other classes, so I ruled it out.
However, you want to avoid ruling out classes after people have started using them, so it's better to play it safe.
I don't even know if we will have others. @Zachiel are you making the campaign joinable by others?
So you'll only be one DM and one player?
@Aaron yes I am
Depends on if others join.
20:39
I'd like to have at least two other players
Anyone here a final fantasy 7 fan?
Well, if you don't get more players, you should definitely allow him to get a golem/homunculus or similar. Even a quite powerful one. Not going to be easy balancing for a single player. :)
@Aaron I've played a bit of it, but not in a few years...I should fire that up before my PS2 completely dies
@William'MindWorX'Mariager If I don't get more players... I guess I'll ask for help with balancing him
@waxeagle You can get is on the PS3 now on PSN I have FF 8 and 9 already. I was asking because I was just watching an AMV and saw what looked like an FF7 anime
20:42
probably FF7:Advent Children
@Zachiel I can always play some fluff characters :)
Just some basic beat faces to balance the game.
@Zachiel Not that one though it is awsome.
This looked like an anime about what happen when Seph went crazy the first time in Neblihim
@Zachiel This would be the right place to ask, that's for sure. :)
There is a summoner class somewhere.
Er wait it was a pokemon trainer class lol.
I wouldn't play it like a pokemon trainer though more of a beast master.
Just get a 3.0 style druid. :P
@William'MindWorX'Mariager Why 3.0?
20:46
It's horribly imbalanced. I don't think 3.5 is much better really.
@William'MindWorX'Mariager 3.0 is weaker than 3.5. No scaling companion for instance.
and we're starting at level 1
I was thinking of going wizard so I could do magic crafting eventually and elf so I have an extra 4 hours a night.
@Zachiel Still, only 4 levels and you get Wild Shape. :P Then you're free to fly or breathe under water for 5 hours if you feel like it.
Or whatever else you can come up with. :P
So what's up?
@William'MindWorX'Mariager I'm fused. I tought the animal companion started at 5 too
@Aaron You don't have 4 extra hours. It's 4 hours trance and 4 hours slacking if you want to memorize spells
20:56
@Zachiel Yea but if I was another race I would have to sleep 8 hours then spend another 4 for spells
No, 8+1 for everyone
Animal companion for a druid is at first level
@Zachiel What do you mean? It only takes others an hour to memorize spells?
Yes, one hour.
I thought Bards had to spend 15 minutes doing vocal warmups or something.
1 hour warmups
20:57
Or was that Pathfinder?
maybe
@Zachiel Where does it say that? In the players handbook under the elfs section?
@Metool Sounds like it
I will be back soon. Going home
Already looking for this on my own but just in case: anyone here knows of an actual play podcast of 13th Age? One that gives a sense of the mechanics, especially the ones that differ from other systems. Alternatively, play-by-post or mechanically-detailed session reports could work too.
21:03
@Aaron chapter 10, spellcasting
21:23
... That makes no sense but ok.
be back later
Ok.

Q: So I think I've found a caveat to Lesser Geas' limits

CobaltProvided your target fails his saving throw, the description of Lesser Geas states that it lasts until the target completes its specified objective or, should the task not have a definite end to it, 1 day per caster level. It does not, however, say that the caster level limit takes priority over ...

Yes, Geas is broken
"Obey my commands until we've killed xxx" (xxx was the final boss of the campaign)
Welcome, @PearsonArtPhoto
22:39
There's always someone who doesn't let me lurk in chat rooms...
XD
Hey @afroakuma
23:03
Is anoyone or RPG.SE running a fate game that could take a player? I'm really intersted in trying FATE
@JoshuaAslanSmith @BESW had one going at one point
@waxeagle thanks, ill throw an @ at him
@besw any chance you are running a fate game that could take on another player? Im interested in trying out the system
AFAIK BESW was lamenting being the only one DM for lots of FATE gamers on our FATE room
@Aaron?
hahaha
I understand that I've been pushed into the DM role for my home game group
which is engaging on one level and frustrating from a story level
because I have to sacrifice my story telling for player agency whereas a player can always be all about their story/the groups story
