Hello?
Bob
Bob
hello
@Bob yo!
@Bob waz up?
@Bob Do you know anything about overclocking/underclocking?
Bob
Bob
not much
I specifically decided against a multiplier-unlocked CPU
is t possible to remove a close vote? I did more research and found that a question was not technically a duplicate answer due to the timing it was asked.
@Bob ok thanks though
Bob
Bob
01:46
@David Unfortunately, no.
dang...
Bob
Bob
Best thing to do is add a comment saying so and hope there that stops a pile-on.
gotcha...
an @everyone would be a funny feature...
Bob
Bob
ouch
ouch?
01:49
@coding_corgi: on intel, the 'slower' multiplier locked varients of the i5 and i7 have some interesting features disabled in the K varients
not familiar with AMD
In general tho, my non K core i7 has never been a bottleneck, and that extra bit of performance probably wouldn't help
One cool thing about AMD is all FX processors are unlocked, as per a NewEgg video I was watching a week ago. An AMD rep was talking about it.
yeah...
@David: AMD kinda has a different way of market segmentation
yeah...
I never liked paying quadruple for my processors though...
lol
@David: quadriple? o0
that is what it seems
01:54
I think MAYBE double, but thats comparing the high end of either
The rediculously fast newest AMD processor is around 200 USD. The equivalent Intel processor is around 1200 USD.
Maybe I am wrong...
if you compare at the mid and low end, they're pretty competitive to me
er, AMD has no equivilent for the EEs
I thought they just came out with an 8 core 5 Ghz processor... but I can't find it on NewEgg... how weird...
would be fairer to compare your high end FX with a non ee core i7
Sorry for my ignorance, but ee?
What is ee?
There is the new 5Ghz 8 core AMD processor that they talked about at E3
01:57
extreme edition
ahh
the LGA 2011 based processors - they're actually xeon varients
that's cool
We used to use xeon processors at the datacenter I work at. Now we use 48 core AMD processors...
o0
on a single package, or 4x12 core processors?
I have only heard the engineers talk about them, I have never looked them up before.
I am gonna check
They are on the DL585 server we recently got
01:59
intel's doing an interesting thing - the low end of the PC market, your celerons and pentiums will be atom based
the midrange to mid high range is their regular processor, and then there's the EEs
atom... that makes me think of the ridiculously slow computers that I had to work on at one point... single core 1.2 Ghz...
(AMD pretty much has the APUs for the lower range and FX for the mid to mid high range)
the interesting thing with AMD's stratergy is their embedded stuff
lol
must be really old, my spare mini itx is the first generation they released in that form factor, and its 1.6 ghz
Remember the triple core AMD processors? They were quad core, with one horrible core that was turned off.
yup
which was an interesting idea to increase yields
That was kinda a crappy thing to do
02:03
and people worked out how to unlock the other core
@David: why? people were aware of it, and it probably lowered costs across the board
the big problem for AMD is they need a pentium M moment
I just think it was weird. It is like having a dog with three legs and calling it a new breed...
(Israeli lab designed this little chip based off the pentium pro for laptops. It ran quiet, it ran cool, and hit kicked pentium 4 in the balls, and stole its lunch money for the next month.... and thats pretty much why intel CRUSHES amd in quite a few things)
for the 48 core servers, I am guessing they are 4 cpu 12 core servers. I can't find anything in regards to the DL585's with 48 cores.
makes sense
I can't remember, isn't it morning where you are? It is 10:10PM here.
02:10
yeah
Good morning!
we're 12 hours off your time ;p
So, what is tomorrow like?
I hope it is good
quite horrid ;p
Oh that sucks. I better stay home.
02:12
the neighbours set their country on fire again
I am definitely calling in sick.
neighbors? Are you talking about California?
indonesia
we're seperated by time and space
Ahh... Why do they like playing with fire so much? They are so weird...
lol
they practice slash and burn agriculture
heat and smoke rises, and comes down on us ;p
LOL!
That stinks. I bet there are respirators in every house.
02:14
naw
we just leave the windows closed
That's good
however we do need to walk the dog 4 times a day, so....
air purifier?
Hmm...
02:15
just an aircon and a fan
So I am guessing your county is helping put out the fires when they come up?
we'd probably love to
but no, the indonesians are kinda abivalent about it
we just send them strongly worded letters
LOL!
in a language they don't understand?
(common sense)

1 hour later…
03:53
turn your volume down ;p
I wonder if Razer does that with their keyboards...?
I'm guessing not. They have a lot higher bad review rating.
I have a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate 2012 though, and am very happy with it.

Q: A better way to search for answers?

KeltariIm sure this has been answered on SU before: Redirect ip-address to localhost However, Im doing a site search and cant find "the" answer. I tried "port forwarding" and "port forwarding how to" and there are just way to many to sort through. There has to be a better way. It would be nice if th...

04:35
@Sathya, that is one awesome mustache in your profile picture. I noticed it from a question you recently answered...
04:50
@David: I have the old model BW, its a brilliant bit of kit.
05:00
@David heh, thanks :P
lol
@HackToHell: I'm more suprised they all have the same name ;p
ALIENS !!
I'm not saying aliens, but its probably Spaniards ;p
mel blanc - one reason I feel sorry for the kids of today

Q: In a laptop cooling fan, what are the grills (for air flow) called? And what's heat sink?

its_meMy laptop's cooling fan is pretty much identical to this: (Image credit) As detailed in the question, I would like to know what the grills on the side of the fan, which enable hot air flow out of the laptop, are called. Is it called ventilator or something (on the whole)? And what's heat sink?

what's the proper close reason for "ID this thing" questions I wonder

1 hour later…
07:24
hmm
says it's Low smoke zero halogen
yet halogen free = no
dafuq
could mean there's halogens used, but the magic smoke dosen't contain it ;p
hmm. perhaps
magic smoke? :D
magic. smoke.
Its what electronics REALLY runs on
aah. of course
if the smoke comes out, it doesn't work anymore
precisely! ;p
Magic smoke (also called factory smoke or blue smoke) is a very strong, caustic smoke that smells of burning plastic. It is produced by overheating electronic circuits or components. The smoke often contains specks of sticky black ash that quickly fill a room. The color of the smoke depends on which component is overheating. The name "Magic Smoke" is a running in-joke that started among electrical engineers and technicians. It was more recently adopted by computer programmers. Bluish-gray smoke is released when black plastic epoxy material used to package semiconductor devices such as tr...
there's even a wikipedia page for it ;p

...
@OliverSalzburg people...
I see... this makes more sense to me now. Well I will never again export the registry, because I know now that there is no use for it as I can't import it later. Yeah, even C Cleaner registry fix/cleaner prompts to save a "backup" of the registry before performing cleaning operations. I tried it in order to fix this problem, it did some 300 "fixes" but didn't solve my problem with audio. — Sammy 2 days ago
You basically said "here, try shadow copies"
the response?
hey, look, I decided to throw a "registry cleaner" at it! :D :D :D
...
08:25
lol
@Bob: the golden rule really...
KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF THE DAMNED REGISTRY UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. THEN YOU WON'T ANYWAY!
Bob
Bob
Hm. Didn't Regedit have a warning when you start it?
Or did they remove that?
i think they might've removed it. atleast I don't get a warning on my work laptop
Bob
Bob
08:41
> Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to re-install Windows to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk.
But that's only on the support docs, not the actual program :\
annnnnnnnd everyone advises exporting all to backup the registry
08:57
lol
there is actually a backup copy of the registry somewhere
for things like that
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea, but not via a text export
which is the whole point of @Oliver's answer to that question
oh, no
since that means your computer working at all ;p
Bob
Bob
There's actually a convenient RegBack directory :P
looks like it copies it there on successful startup
09:58
@Bob Amazingly, that's what MS suggests to do for a registry backup
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg :\
I didn't find what they think you should do with it though :D
I think there's a copy hidden deep in system32 as well
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea.
%SystemRoot%\System32\config\RegBack
/me chuckles
came across this on HF...
I'm totally WHUT?
Bob
Bob

Noise.
Digital jitter.
Wat.
Sweet, I'll get those for my printer
It's crazy how often stuff like that pops up
lol
this is even crazier
I don't BEGIN to pretend to understand half the crap they're talking about
Oh WOW, it's even better than the other one. The customers say so themselves!
> "I compared your cable to my reference Wire-World Starlight Platinum USB cable and I have to admit the Cabledyne sounds cleaner."
it's 123$ @_@
10:18
@HackToHell: the price you pay for cryo 99.9999% purity silver monocrystal square wire !
(I know, I am lolling so hard at this)
@OliverSalzburg: alas, I cannot link you the 10K dollar power cords ;p
also, you need to run power through your cord to burn it in, else it won't sound as good.
using one of these musicdirect.com/…
Amd and power efficiency do not go together
@HackToHell: they want to get in on the mobile game?
oh, microservers
@JourneymanGeek wat?
10:25
@OliverSalzburg: XD
I only use well burnt in power cables!
(by which I mean I plug in my PC and use it all day)
Something is not right with this computer!!! I need better USB cables!
Explorer is not behaving
Screenshot upload takes forever
@OliverSalzburg Do you have greenshot uploads assciated with a imgur account ?
After I removed it, it's instant
@HackToHell No, it works pretty well usually
I'm pretty sure both problems are related. Because as soon as the upload finally went through, Explorer got content
But now it hangs again...
I bet it's that stupid network drive
10:48
Hello guys is there any ways to "text-to-speech" a selected text in Windows 8 ?
Bob
Bob
11:13
@OliverSalzburg Looks like when I had a faulty drive (it was actually a dying SATA cable on the DVD drive).
@Meds Depends on the application.
There is a system-wide tool (Narrator), which will work on most.
But the application-specific ones might be better in some cases.
11:40
@OliverSalzburg: might be imgur, I've occationally had issues with uploading single images to it
The only time it really gave me trouble was when my upload history started to really fill up ;D
But I think that was fixed in Greenshot

Q: Create a File in command line with specific size?

fasilCreate file using touch command or similar way with exact size required say 14MB as file size. The use case scenario is to test FTP with various file sizes... If we can create a file with specific size it will be useful to verify the FTP tranfer etc.,

We never had a question like that?
Bob
Bob
12:16
98% memory usage -_-
o0
@Bob: too many tabs?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek too many VMs
one is taking 4 GB, another 2 GB
I need more RAM :P
that was my second guess ;p
Bob
Bob
my computer just locked up
time for a hard reset
@JourneymanGeek still on a 32-bit browser
@Bob Why not more SSD space?
Bob
Bob
12:25
Because 1. I don't have a SSD, and 2. I need RAM.
A SSD is useless for this.
I need RAM. Simple as that.
@Bob My tablet locked up and I used rear pinhole to reset it which was the only way.
Bob
Bob
VMs allocate chunks from physical RAM.
@Bob You cannot allocate SSD space for VM to play as RAM?
Bob
Bob
And, honestly, getting more storage space is a piss-poor substitute for more physical memory.
Meaning, it does absolutely jack shit.
@Boris_yo I wouldn't want to.
SSD performance is nowhere near that of RAM.
@Bob Well yes SSD is slower than RAM actually.
Bob
Bob
12:27
...
By many many orders of magnitude.
If you want more memory, get more memory.
Rule 1: don't substitute other hardware components. It doesn't work.
@Bob So, buy some RAM! :D
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Of course :P
@Bob Do you know similar test tool like CrystalDisk but one that benchmarks memory?
Bob
Bob
But it's 10:30 PM and rather code! :P
@OliverSalzburg Shut up and take my money!
Bob
Bob
12:29
> DDR3 SDRAM gives a transfer rate of (memory clock rate) × 4 (for bus clock multiplier) × 2 (for data rate) × 64 (number of bits transferred) / 8 (number of bits/byte). Thus with a memory clock frequency of 100 MHz, DDR3 SDRAM gives a maximum transfer rate of 6400 MB/s.
@Boris_yo CrystalRAM
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo You don't need to benchmark memory speed.
@Bob I want to compare my SSD to RAM.
Bob
Bob
Tools like Memtest will show the throughput, but this is all well-specified, unlike storage media.
@Boris_yo There is no comparison.
DDR3 RAM clocked at 1333 MHz has a throughput of ~85GBytes/sec
@Bob: I have 16gb
I ALMOST maxed mine out ;p
12:31
@Bob So if my SSD benchmarks sequential read at 500 MB/s and write at 450 MB/s and DDR3 SD RAM is 6400 MB/s transfer (write?) that means RAM wins 11x fold?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo that's That's RAM clocked at 100 MHz.
Consumer RAM is either 1333 or 1600 now.
bangs head into wall
Actually, wait... not sure if there's a multiplier mixup there
meh
Ah, yea. An extra multiplier slipped in.
@Bob Yeah today's RAM is like 120x fold faster...
Bob
Bob
Halve that.
But it's still an order of magnitude (or two) faster than SATA can reach.
Bob
Bob
Heck, any storage interface.
12:34
actually they're trying to move storage into PCIe next
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Still not fast enough :P
amusingly until they make an adaptor, ultrabooks might have faster drives than desktops
@Bob: the only substitute for butter ram is butter ram
Bob
Bob
Basically, getting more storage space when you need more memory is just stupid.
I was referred to Wikipedia page with somekind of RAM that is non-wearable and it is planned to be manufactured.
Bob
Bob
12:36
...RAM wears now?
@Bob Wait... It was SSD. Oh yeah ot was NAND. They plan to create non-wearable NAND in future.
memristors?
I buy that - "Shut up and take my money!"
I don't buy that - "Shut up and don't take my money!"
@JourneymanGeek That has been available for ages (internet ages)
@OliverSalzburg: available, yes, mainstream, less so
they're using a new formfactor for it too
12:42
@JourneymanGeek Well, that's only because people are cheap bastards
lol
I'm a poor student and all ;p
(granted somewhat older than usual)
I would be perfectly happy to invest into some more SSDs before I would look into PCIe storage
And before I would get PCIe storage, I'd get some reference USB cables for my mouse
@OliverSalzburg: ;p
and magic rocks
Does wireless mouse have some delay or what, compared to corded mouse?
@JourneymanGeek No thanks, no crack for me
Bob
Bob
12:49
@Boris_yo Can you notice one? No? Great!
@OliverSalzburg: oh oh, and cable suspension
@Bob I am HSP so I can feel it.
Bob
Bob
Keep telling yourself that.
@JourneymanGeek For the mouse?
@OliverSalzburg: no, for your reference USB cables
12:50
Is it really dangerous to stare at IR mouse output socket?
Bob
Bob
Yup! It'll set you on fire!
@Boris_yo: only if it stares back
Hehe
@JourneymanGeek So I don't get interference from the ground?
@OliverSalzburg: precisely!
Bob
Bob
12:51
@OliverSalzburg nono, you want to catch the natural energy from the air; it enhances the signal
I wonder if dogs can hear wireless interference...
OMG I have been living under a rock all these years!!
@Bob: thats what the magic rocks are for
@Boris_yo: yes.
@OliverSalzburg He who lives under a rock, although short sighted but at least is healthy.
12:53
Aye I miss Ren & Stimpy. Always forget to order first 2 seasons on DVD from Amazon.
(those photos TOTALLY look like they were taken upside down)
@JourneymanGeek Who they kid? Also that flexible shelf should be good in preserving ceramic plates or vases in case of earthquake. A shelf that never falls.
also
@Boris_yo: also, if the spring in your toilet paper holder is lost
AND your flushing will sound better.
Hey they could sell it to grocery stores so in case of earthquake, the goods don't fall and not mess will be made.
That stuff is even more insane than the stuff @Boris_yo usually posts here
12:57
@OliverSalzburg: sad thing is? I don't know if its snake oil, or a REALLY well done joke
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, that's a possibility as well, I guess :\
@JourneymanGeek I don't think my toilet holde has spring.
...or maybe it's even true!!!
@OliverSalzburg: they got stuff reviewed by a semi reputable audiophool site
@OliverSalzburg Hey maybe the guy who owns website is also conspiracy theorist? :D
I am yet to see tinfoil hats.
12:58
@Boris_yo We don't wear those. It's bad for the clarity of the audio
@OliverSalzburg And also for phone talks creating interference?
@OliverSalzburg: yeah, you need to wear cryo treated single crystal silver ;p
13:18
@JourneymanGeek Audiophool?
13:40
@jokerdino Hello, how was your day?
sun baked
@jokerdino On your profile it says "Parent User". What does that mean? That this is your original place where you registered?
It means what it is supposed to mean.
@Boris_yo: yes.
13:43
Audiophool!
cool... this is what I exactly looked for... thanks @oliver-salzburg — fasil 2 mins ago
Oh, you're welcome ;D
@JourneymanGeek I only knew about word "audiophile".
@jokerdino Where's that on earth?
@Boris_yo: often is the same thing ;p
@JourneymanGeek "Audiofool" - Is there such word?
its spelled phool
it means someone with more money than sense, and a VERY active imagination ;p
13:47
@JourneymanGeek Like Apple fanboy?
@Boris_yo: vaguely
how to make it even easier to trip on your cables....
and we can play the electrical code violation drinking game... but someone will die of alcohol posioning
Why would anyone do that?
> The Cable Elevators are a delightful sonic surprise, hardly because lifting cables off the floor is new to me. I have been doing just that for a number of years with homemade versions and with good results. What surprised me the most, however, was how much better Cable Elevators are from what I have been using so far. They are very well built, easy to use and sonically represent an unmistakable Best Buy.
> I cannot claim to understand fully how cable elevators work, from a scientific point of view, but I can claim that they do work.
13:53
(I admit keeping cables off the floor. I sound better when I'm not tripping over cables)
Oh! Well then....
@OliverSalzburg: Who needs science anyway!
What are these people listening to anyway?
It seems like even the most lossless audio recording would be an insult to their systems/ears
"lol, you call FLAC lossless???!!!"
13:55
@OliverSalzburg: its digital, its cold and unfeeling
gotta have all the music in vinyl, mastered on the original equipment!
Like, seriously, that dude was using home-built cable elevators before and after switching to these brand-name ones, the sound got "better"?
;p
@OliverSalzburg: A lot of this is... well people convincing themselves it sounds better ;p
And, lucky him, he even got to use 2 on his power chord! I bet that really made the difference!
