Q: What is port forwarding and what is it used for?

KronoSThere are a lot of questions on 'port forwarding' but there doesn't seem to be one that cleary states what it is and what it's used for. So: What is Port Forwarding? What is it used for, and why would I need it?

Is there a reason that my question is on the feeds? Am I just that awesome of a Super User that everyone now needs to see my questions?! Awesome!!!!!
@KronoS there's a feed which pulls in or
Also, fine pickle I'm stuck in
Ah!

Q: What can I do when I have forgotten my LastPass Master Password?

SathyaRight, Here's the situation I'm in - got assigned to a new system. Installed LastPass. LastPass login stares at me... and I'm blank. The password hint doesn't work ( mainly because after their recent anomaly, I changed my master password but didn't update the password hint question). I'm logg...

@Sathya: I think that you're in quite the mess there.
04:09
@MarkSzymanski I know :(
I wish I could help, but I don't know anything about LastPass :(
@Sathya it looks like the only recourse is to request a one time pass from them... otherwise a complete deletion is all that you can do.
hmm
export from my logged in system, delete, create account again
then reimport
Goodnight everyone
good night @MarkSzymanski

morning all
07:41
hi all :-)
08:09
Good morning!
@BloodPhilia that's not cheerful, is it?
@DMA57361 Well it is!
Besides getting up, I love mornings!
@BloodPhilia uurrgh
@DMA57361 :(
@BloodPhilia lol, just got a cold, headache and not enough sleep; so it's another fun fun Monday morning ;P
08:20
@DMA57361 Auch! Hope you get better soon! (:
@BloodPhilia meh, I'll live
09:04
moo
10:04
meh
10:19
quack.
oh yeah my department's got a new coffee machine
@slhck does it dispense coffee?
@DMA57361 oh, really good coffee
O_o madness
I know who's gonna be insomniac tonight
10:22
lol
meh, don't drink coffee anyway
we're not allowed a kettle in our office, it (apparently) messes up the air-con and bulding management system.
Although I preferred the old espresso maker that (slightly) reeked of old milk
@tombull89 that's cruelty
@tombull89 heh, same here, we have a self contained hot water dispensing machine thing... it kind of works but surely must waste so much energy :/
When we noticed the old coffee machine was going to stop working eventually, we had to make plans for a new one.. and I remember when the department staff would designate one person to do the calculations.
There was this meeting where he presented some awesome charts
correlation statistics, future projections
(we get kinda crazy about coffee in Austria it seems)
10:41
@DMA57361 can you do me a favor and close this one? superuser.com/questions/284094/…
10:53
how can someone offer a 200 bounty if they only hav 91 rep? how does that work?
@slhck sorry, was AFK, will look in a second
@tombull89 do they have 91 rep after offering the bounty (ie, they had 291 before)? because the rep is deducted immediately
@DMA57361 no, the bounty ends in 4 days, and they have 94 rep (previous 91 was a typo) currently

Q: How to start Google Chrome with maximized window?

LanceBaynesIf I have already started Google Chrome, then start it again, the window is not maximized; I have to click to maximize it. Are there any hidden parameters to set Google Chrome to always start in a maximized window? (not full screen - F11)

@tombull89 right, their current rep is after the deduction, you lose the rep when you open the bounty
@DMA57361 oh, right. I was under the impression it got deducted when it was awarded, not offered.
@tombull89 nope, you lose it straight away to prevent gaming, etc
also, look at superuser.com/users/78392/… for more confirmation
(just remember to account for the +100 account association bonus)
10:58
ah, I see now. He offered 200 bounty and then eanred 30 back on the same day, with -170 overall rep.
also gaming the bounty? that's a new one to me.
@tombull89 well, it doesn't happen because these sort of restrictions are in place :)
@DMA57361 haha, I meant I thought it wouldn't have been possible to game it anyway
@tombull89 well if it got deducted at the end, you could start a 200 bounty with 201 rep, then go on a downvoting spree so you didn't then have 200 rep to give...
@DMA57361 ha, right.
never offered a bounty before :P
hmm, it appears someone makes my perfect keyboard ;p
11:05
@JourneymanGeek blank, no letters?
or it makes a note on each keypress?
no, US keymap, euro style enter key, buckling spring keys
in short, a slightly customised unicomp keyboard
i considered the das keyboard, but eh, i like the unicomp more, its old fashioned
I assume I've missed the first half of this conversation? :)
oh, the blank, no letters part ;p
>_>
thinks he spoke out of turn, and killed the conversation ;p
na, I'm just in and out today; mild amounts of work keep distracting me from chat
11:17
and: buckling spring keys mean nothing to me...
they're the old fashioned sort. make a clicky sound ;p
fair enough then
basically those, and mechanical keyswitches are the 'good' keyboards
most keyboards these days use plain old dome switches i think
too technical for me, I've only ever bought one keyboard
That was only last year, and my previous one was probably >10 years old at that point
11:30
well, the old keyboard still worked :P
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_technology#Dome-switch_keyboard that's the common desktop keyboard, the one below it is used in good laptops, and is better than a dome switch, IMO
the best keyboards are capasitive (like the happy hacking keyboard) use switches (like das keyboard) or buckling spring based
if you say so :)
(and THIS, is probably how people started calling me geek ;p)
lol, well that's probably a factor, yes ;P
ello pals
11:33
@Sathya howdy
@DMA57361 I'm in the same boat as you
i rather miss my old alps. Spoiled me for life. best keyboard i've used so far, even better than the thinkpads... and i have no idea what they did with it ><
@Sathya hot-water-machine wise?

Q: We are no longer accepting questions from this account error

Umair Sorry, we are no longer accepting questions from this account. See http://goo.gl/C1Kwu to learn more. I read the reasons of this error but I have searched, followed and done everything. What if no one understands my question? How I can get rid of it now?

lol. i woke up at 1 with a blocked nose. knocked down a shot of actifed, and went back to sleep. woke up fresh as a daisy (well, that stuff makes me drowsy as hell, but you never feel drowsy when you're asleep)

A: What is the best tool (and my chances of success) for recovering files from an Ext4 partition?

Justin BuserIanN is mostly correct, it really depends on how much data there was on the two partitions you copied over and exactly what method you used, if you did a direct drive to drive copy with dd instead of creating an image file first then you'd probably only be able to recover files from the areas of ...

@slhck "no thanks"; it's not an answer anyway, but a comment on another one, so it's gone
@DMA57361 nice, ty :)

Q: How do I set PATH and other environment variables?

slhckQuestions about setting environment variables the PATH are very common here, and in most cases the answers are very similar to each other. In the future it would be nice to have a good Q/A for this. So the question is: How do I set the executable PATH and other environment variables on maj...

18:50
Please someone check my answer to that, I have no idea if I got any of it right ;D
Haha, can't tell for Windows, but the rest looks fine @DanielBeck
@DanielBeck Windows part is correct
Seems like @slhck and me approve of this post :D
I might add some structure like <h1>Windows, etc. and then for every OS a section on where they are and how to add them
.. I'll look into that later ;)
I want a copy of Portal 2 ='(
19:10
@BloodPhilia What is stopping you from getting it? :)
19:42
@slhck funding?
20:09
@BloodPhilia I didn't check, how much is it?
I'm not really a gamer, so I wouldn't know if the price is justified at all ;)
20:24
hey @Wil you around?
@slhck Well I'm sure the price is justified, but I just bought a new car today so the funding is pretty much gone :D
Anyone here :O?
@BloodPhilia I am... what's up?
@KronoS Nothing is! Just a bit bored really!
@KronoS How was/is your day?
good so far.... found out that I'm going to get paid for a research position at the university... which is nice...
@KronoS Nice! :D
@KronoS I just bought my first car today!
20:35
@BloodPhilia Oh, nice! Which one is it? :)
@slhck A 1995 Ford Escort :P
Hardly new, but it runs perfectly :D
A car is a thing that takes you from A to B, so I don't care if it's new or not :P @BloodPhilia
@slhck No, but it's nice if it doesn't fall apart :P
@BloodPhilia True that haha :D but congrats on the first car!
@BloodPhilia nice!

Q: Windows XP cannot access a Windows 7 shared folder.

KronoSI have a small business network, where there is a centralized imaging machine. This machine then has a shared folder with all the stored images. Originally the imaging machine was an XP, and the shared folder was easily accessed by all. However, we recently had to upgrade that machine to a new...

20:37
@slhck Thanks!
@KronoS what do you mean by "not accessible"? Can't you see the server in the network, can't you see its shares or won't it allow you to log in?
Afternoon everyone
hi! @SimonSheehan
heya @slhck, hows it going?
@slhck I can see the pc from the network, but when I click on the pc from explorer or type in \\pcname I get an error of "Network path not accessible"

@KronoS half asleep, but here!
@SimonSheehan Hey Simon
very good, thank you! how about you? @SimonSheehan
Absolutely fantastic actually :D
and hey @BloodPhilia!
@Wil see my question above ^^
Simon says fantastic!
20:47
and if you need the sleep go get some... you don't need to help me ;)
:D
Wil
Wil
@KronoS it is part of the new Security Windows Vista started... I really am so tired, so forgive if not 100 accurate.... Check in network centre to begin with - I think there is an option there you need to change... I think under sharing, you need to make sure it is on and that public sharing is also on
I can't remember, but I have a feeling there was a security option somewhere... Trying to find it, there was a KB article I read ages ago.
@SimonSheehan ? what?
Im number 3 there o.o
20:53
@SimonSheehan Good good!
Heheh..
felt like sharing it, i feel like im achieving something
Gotta beat @JourneymanGeek this month ;D
@SimonSheehan You are! :D
Wil
Wil
20:56
@Kronos - I keep falling asleep! Yeah, just tested... Make sure you go to network and sharing center, click advanced sharing settings on the left and make sure you disable "password protected sharing", then as well as everyone, make sure you include guest in both the security tab and the share permissions tab
Wow I need to bookmark that @Wil
Wil
Wil
I'm sorry, I keep falling asleep at my keyboard! - I can't remember exactly but there is something funky about the guest account not being part of everyone group and Windows Vista/7 shares differently, e.g. if you have the same workgroup name and users with the same name, it will auto log on
Also, under Folder Options > View, disable "Use Sharing Wizard"... it gives you much better control.
Hmmmm... don't see the password protected sharing
Wil
Wil
@slhck Not my best piece of advice :S
@Wil No I mean.. whenever I run into this issue to look for a setting like that
Because normally you would assume that it works out of the box

21:01
Well, glad to help... sorry, I just am surprised, I am so tired out with work, I am half asleep (only 10PM) and feel a bit useless!
just got logged out when I tried to post a picture :S
ya it's not there... I wonder if it's cuz I'm joined to a domain
Wil
Wil
@KronoS It would be! ... Didn't know that part!
oh sorry...
Wil
Wil
@KronoS No problem! Sorry... I really need to go to sleep, I am feeling really bad :S I am pretty sure there is a local security policy to change, I just can't remember it... you may want to add domain to the question as that is very significant... If you haven't solved it, I will help in the morning
@Wil Sleep well Wil!

@nhinkle: I first thought you were blogging my answer, but it seems you've blogged a duplicate instead. :D

Q: How does Windows know when your Internet connection (but not your LAN connection) goes down?

KeithiusThe Windows 7 network icon down in the system tray (sorry, taskbar notification area) shows your connectivity status - but more than just whether the connection is on or off, it also apparently can tell if your Internet connection is down. Case in point: my Internet connection went down, and th...

@TomWijsman that was actually @Nhinkle :P
@Wil thanks for you help thus far. Get some sleep my good buddy. I'll figure it out
@KronoS Ah okay, well, it's not a 100% exact duplicate though. I don't have a problem with it but I just remembered answering such question long time ago...
that's all good...
Nice details in the blog post... :)
The Portal 2 song keeps replaying in my head :(
21:20
@BloodPhilia I've got "Still alive" stuck in mine ;)
This was a triumph..
@SimonSheehan This was a triumph!
@SimonSheehan I extracted the MP3 from the game resources xD
xD i just ripped it from youtube :P
The game actually contains an untouched 256kbps MP3
So I prefer that over a YouTube rip :P
o.o Neat, i should install it then
@SimonSheehan I'll email it to you, hold on
21:23
@BloodPhilia I've got a tool that does 320kbps MP3's :P but untouched stuff is nice too
and thanks!
opens thunderbird to await mail
@SimonSheehan which tool is that?
@SimonSheehan Taking 320 kbps mp3's from a 256kbps source still leaves you with 256kbps quality :P
@slhck its actually called "Free youtube to mp3 converter." Now i know the name sounds like a big scam, but it isnt! :P
@BloodPhilia Yes, but it does allow me to get some nice quality out still :D
And the quality is better than "normal" rips? :P @SimonSheehan
@SimonSheehan sent
21:25
@slhck I like to think so :P It works for me
@SimonSheehan Haha ok gotta try that out some time
well, I'm gonna call it a day, see you guys around
@slhck they have a whole suite of neat tools, such as "Free youtube to video, iphone, etc."
And cya later!
Although their toolbar offer after each download is annoying, i removed it xD
Thanks @BloodPhilia, listening now :)
sounds good!
@SimonSheehan You're welcome!
@BloodPhilia When did you want to schedule that Gnome post for by the way?
Aperture Science, we do what we must, because we can! For the good of all of us, except the ones who are dead...
21:29
Dinner time! be back
@SimonSheehan Friday 27th
@BloodPhilia But theres no sense crying over every mistake
:P
anyways, be back in a few
@SimonSheehan I'll be gone in a few
@SimonSheehan So enjoy dinner and bye bye!
Bye, @BloodPhilia!
@MarkSzymanski Haha Hi Mark! Didn't see you just there (:
21:30
Hehe :P
I'm not gone yet, but will be in about 10 minutes
How's it going, @BloodPhilia?
@MarkSzymanski Good good, bought my first car today :D
Cool! :D
So I'm pretty cheerful!
@MarkSzymanski Yer! :D
22:09
Lovely dinner, back now xD
Welcome back, @SimonSheehan! :D
Thanks @MarkSzymanski :D
Anyone here find the Stack Exchange-provided user flair lacking feature-wise?
user30
No. :P
I never use it XD
22:16
Hmm... I guess I'm promoting my new tool to the wrong audience.
@GeorgeEdison I do think it could be a more elaborate image there.
Do tell though, what is this tool?
Please let me know what you think.
Pretty nice, the reflection on the logo isn't the best, though XD
@GeorgeEdison Its very well done, ill tell you that. I like the choice, and the colour chooser is very intricate
@MarkSzymanski The logo will be replaced, don't worry.
@SimonSheehan I'm afraid I can't claim credit for the color chooser - that's a jQuery plugin.
22:19
@GeorgeEdison Its a good choice of plugin at least. I would use this for signatures on forums, i like it
@SimonSheehan You can change the image size and colors too.
:D i saw
@GeorgeEdison Is this a finished product now?
@SimonSheehan Nope.
It only generates HTML right now.
...there is planned support for image output.
@GeorgeEdison Thought so. Its very good so far though, i do hope to see the finished work
@SimonSheehan I'll stick it on StackApps when it's done.
22:21
Great :D
@GeorgeEdison: What's with the login? SE uses OpenID to login and yours doesn't. How does it work, exactly?
@MarkSzymanski Remember, its unfinished ^^
@SimonSheehan: Yeah, I know :P
Sorry... I was mysteriously logged out for a second there.
@MarkSzymanski How does the login work? What do you mean?
@GeorgeEdison: How does it authenticate? It doesn't use OpenID like SE does.
Doesn't appear to, anyways.
22:24
@MarkSzymanski It doesn't authenticate with anything.
Ok, sorry.
The account you create is just with my server.
The account is needed so that the page remembers your association ID for retrieving account information.
23:09
@TomWijsman interesting. I didn't see that when I searched. That was even asked pretty recently. I guess that goes to show how differences in how you ask can affect how popular your question is :P
23:22
@nhinkle I enjoyed todays blog post, i may have to try it myself soon :D
thanks @simon!
glad you liked it
23:43
ooh, someone wants to knock me off my perch ;p
@JourneymanGeek --> news.ycombinator.com
Ok, my brother is ordering my new keyboard for me tommorrow ;p
:O what kind
23:47
look what you did, getting me hooked on yet another tech site, for shame! ;p
