@allquixotic African children wouldn't eat video cards
@BenRichards according to the hillarious review site you linked, better PSUs don't have the switch ;p
00:42
@JourneymanGeek Aha, no kidding!
Also, I don't reference it because the guy is funny. He's also very knowledgeable and thorough :P
(TIL....)
oh yeah he is
I mean, he opens up every PSU he reviews
Yeah
Time for games. :)

I can finally confirm that the discrete/dedicated graphics card does actually work in background.

5 hours later…
06:29
anyone here knows how to delete old windows installation by deleting windows folder instead of deleting the windows partition itself? I am in another new windows installation in the same hard disk and I am getting permission error. I tried all the solutions in the links and links-in-those-links on the first 5 pages of google search results for "Delete Windows files"
not sure if there's a better way than to delete the partition the old windows install was on :b
I suppose there might be some software that can delete it, tho
but yeah, since windows is stupid, but not THAT stupid it's not just going to let you delete a Windows directory
@srikanthchandrasekaran did it name the old windows dir as "windows.old"?
Bob
Bob
Hmm.
Granted, I'm not currently using a genuine adapter.
I have a sneaking suspicion that they put the wrong ID chip inside :P
hmm
the fishers sound great unamped... yay...
another excuse to dump my speakers
Bob
Bob
oh yea
@JourneymanGeek the USB sound card arrived
Bob
Bob
06:40
it identifies as some C-media thing
smashed one apart
shoddy soldering (the wires came off very easily)
sounds identical to the internal realtek
@Bob: I find the whole idea you need a 2 dollar sound card to undo what they claim to be millions of dollars of R&D ;p

Bob
Bob
I'm certain it'll sound better than the laptop internal :P
@Bob: as he resident audio-snob, I find this hillarious
Bob

can't see the actual DAC chip
it's some black blob

sure sign of high class hardware.

Lke this one.

Q: What kind of components are black blobs on a PCB?

drxzclIn low-cost mass-produced items I often run into black blobs of what looks like resin applied directly on top of something on the PCB. What are these things exactly? I suspect this is some kind of custom IC that is layed out directly on the PCB to save on the plastic housing/connector pins. Is t...

@JourneymanGeek Sarcasm does not translate well to text.
;p
alas, it doesn't
it does if you're on the same page :P

yup, cheaper to build, if you're not doing it manually
Bob

and one crystal attached near the blob
probably the timing crystal
Bob

the caps are 10V/100uF. Not sure what they're for...
lol
filtering?
Bob
Bob
not entirely sure what they're attached to, but ok
06:48
you could get a datasheet and trace
but thats a sure path to insanity
Bob
Bob
I smashed the casing apart.. if I still wanted to use this one, I'd have to resolder the USB cable on and stick some heatshrink on it
(which is why I ordered two :P)
@JourneymanGeek Get a datasheet? Where?
I usually google the main chip and look up a reference design
Bob
Bob
I have no idea what the main chip is.
I do it with simpler things like power supplies tho
lol
thats a problem
Bob
Bob
might give it to an EE friend to take a look at :P
06:50
also, I'm an EE dropout. which means I can read these things, yet have no clue about the actual theories of how they work p
so.. basically you can read, but not understand what you're reading? :b
Bob
Bob
Ah, time to try the Pi again
@Leathe It is is a completely different partition than my active windows and it(the folder I wish to delete) is named "Windows". AFAIK windows.old is formed when you initiate a windows installation from within another windows installation and in that case windows will backup the current installation in windows.old...I find zillions of solutions for deleting windows.old in google search. But those tricks don't work in my case.
07:06
@srikanthchandrasekaran and deleting the partition it's on is out of the question?
ya
@Leathe It is a fairly big partition and I have lots of my data in it and I currently am running out of space and don't have a spare external disk with as much space needed. So deleting the entire partition is out of question
Bob
Bob
@srikanthchandrasekaran Would you be able to boot a Linux Live CD and delete it from there?
The Linux NTFS driver ignores permissions.
I don't have CD/DVD drive in this comp. But surely a USB-bootable will do? And will a linux live CD support ntfs out of the box?
Bob
Bob
@srikanthchandrasekaran Yes and yes.
When I say Live CD, I mean any live media.
Well, NTFS support depends on the Linux distribution.
Ubuntu derivatives should.
Knoppix does.
I think it might even be a standard kernel module by now? :\
Will Fedora 18 support it? Because I have it ready. If only Ubuntu will do it, I will have to download it
Bob
Bob
07:13
Fedora.. I think it should. It woud not hurt to try.
Anything that gets you into a Linux environment with access to the disk.
Let me check it out and report back here in a 30 minutes or an hour :)
Bob
Bob
Good luck.
I was going to do the linux boot thing when I got a question on my mind.
Is it possible to simulate linux file system on Windows?
In other words I want to see whether linux will see my particular drive as sd2 or sd6 etc
@leathe I can compare a circuit to a diagram but not design one
Bob
Bob
07:40
@srikanthchandrasekaran No.
The discovery order is deterministic, though, so you could probably find out of you read enough docs.
But most live media automounts all drives anyway.
Yay, the Pi works!
Now I just need to find a working mouse, and maybe wifi module...
So many giveaways for Beats crap...
Lol. I wonder why?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Honestly, it could be either way.
The same people are always doing Apple giveaways, so...
anyone here know much about laptop hardware? :b
or well. I'll ask anyway
i5, 128GB SSD, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 14.1" screen for 450€
or
i7, 160GB HDD, 2GB DDR3, 12.1" screen for 330€
Same gen?
Bob
Bob
@Leathe Which specific CPU models?
cpx
cpx
07:49
How do I check my primary video card memory?
Bob
Bob
"i5" and "i7" each have at least several dozen models, with very wide (and overlapping) ranges.
Also, I'd recommend you do not get any machine with 2GB of RAM, unless you plan to upgrade it yourself.
That's just a recipe for disaster.
Who the f*** put an i7 with 2 GB of RAM anyway? What the hell is the point of that?
Also, the resolutions. That is just as, if not more, important as the physical size.
No idea, but that's upgradeable anyway
Bob
Bob
@Leathe Careful. Some unibody designs are a real bitch to open, and some manufacturers use glue.
that's true
but it's still around 120€ difference in price
Bob
Bob
A lot of that is probably the "bigger" screen.
07:52
yeah
Bob
Bob
What are the screen resolutions?
CPU models?
If they're bad enough, could rule out one without even considering the RAM.
1440x900 for the one with the i5 and 1280x800 for i7
Bob
Bob
Hm. The former is "HD".
i5 520 @ 2.40 GHz (even tho I can't find that on the intel site)
and i7-640LM @ 2.13GHz
the intel site only has i5 520UM, which is at 1.07 GHz
so that's pretty weird
oh also, the i5 is a Lenovo Thinkpad, and the i7 is a HP Elitebook
and I suppose the difference in price also comes from the fact that the i5 one has an SSD
The i5 is a x230?
07:57
T410s
Hmm. Where is @nhinkle when you need him :p
:b
the SSD is sure nice, but do I really need that on a laptop I'll mostly be using for school stuff anyway
Bob
Bob
Oh, it's a SSD?
That would make up a lot of the price.
yeah
Bob
Bob
Nehalem... :S
@JourneymanGeek @nhinkle would have an automatic NO for HP.
08:02
well, I'm not very keen on the HP myself :b
brb
Lol.and I have a thinkpad bias
@JourneymanGeek as in it's good or bad?
08:31
hmm. if I get the Thinkpad, I'll probably reinstall the OS
Don't want W7 FIN edition
09:21
I prefer them
@leathe fin edition?

I'd rather have it in English

@allquixotic How can they project holograms in the air if air is not matter?
@Boris_yo air is matter..
@allquixotic But how can you project on something like air? It needs to be object, otherwise there is no basis.

Q: Hang / Unreponsive Windows/GUI - VBA

msinfoIs there a way to avoid hanging and unresponsiveness of windows while running inside vba code/macro on large data. At times I can't even move window from one position to another. What is role of DoEvents in this case. There is one particular case with Excel vba, where when macro is running and up...

simple answer?
DON'T USE VBA ;p
Bob
Bob
Well.
It's more for SO.
But the first thing I'd say is don't use VBA for large data sets.
@Boris_yo It's not air. It's actually small lead particles which are dusted into the air. It's highly toxic of course, but it looks so friggin cool!!!!
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Does it have to be lead? o.O
@JourneymanGeek HMMMMMMmmmmmmmMMMMMMMMMMmmmMMMMM
14:29
@Bob No, anything toxic would have worked to make that joke
What do people outside the US think of this NSA business?
Bob
Bob
(I'd do something if I could. But this is really up to US citizens, and chances are the most they'd get is not spying on their own citizens. As one commenter put it, the rest of the world is fucked as long as we rely on US companies.)
@Tanner The media is going apeshit and the general population is going like "What's an NSA?"
Bob
Bob
lol
hah
14:30
@OliverSalzburg: the internet media is going apeshit
"What do you mean? THEY'RE READING MY FACEBOOKS????"
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Fair bit of mainstream coverage.
Eh, I've been hearing it on local radio too.
Not sure about TV news; I don't have TV.
"lawl, I don't mind, I only post garbage on FB anyway!"
@Oliver Salzburg The air must have something physical to mirror hologram?
Bob
Bob
14:31
O.O
Ok. Shit.
@Boris_yo You can see pretty clearly in the video that they're not "projecting into air"
lol
ours is trying to crackdown on the online media
Bob
Bob
What I don't understand is how they could make storage facilities so obvious...
I really don't understand what all the fuzz is all about. It's like people were thinking their data is secret/safe with FB, Google, etc
@Bob HAH! Aussies got it too. :P
14:33
@Bob: you can't hide THAT much data that easily
Bob
Bob
I mean, you could build it to be virtually indistinguishable from any other DC.
@OliverSalzburg That's the funny part. It's exactly what they think.
Bob
Bob
Or spread it out over a wider area.
If it ever even crosses their minds.
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg I think the main concern is the collection of all that data in one place.
14:34
@Tanner: or do what I do and be boring ;p
@Tanner Like, it's cool as long as only FB and Google can read it, but as soon as some agency can, that's an outrage...
Bob
Bob
And the possibility of someone running a general keyword search (for example) to single out possible targets.
@Oliver Salzburg Lead? Then it explains why government sprays chemtrails into the air under the guise of Global Warming. They need to project alien objects to scare people and stage alien invasion. Some say they will stage the second coming of Christ.
@Boris_yo :D
...
YOU FORGOT THE ILLUMINATI!
AND THE LIZARD MEN!
AND FOX NEWS!
Bob
Bob
14:35
@OliverSalzburg The difference is, you have an intelligence agency with access. Their entire purpose is to go through data like this and discover possible threats.
AND CNBC!
;p
Bob
Bob
With crap like the No Fly List (which is rather arbitrary), it's very easy for this to cause massive inconvenience, false positives, etc..
@Bob: the problem is really the lack of oversight
what if we have another macarthy-style witch hunt?
@OliverSalzburg And really, I think that's fair. I don't mind private corporations "spying" on me to try and sell me stuff. Whatever. But the government trying to figure out if I'm a "home grown terrorist"? Well... maybe one day I'll make too many "anti-american" remarks and buy one too many shotguns...
@Bob Don't get me wrong, I find it concerning as well, but if I didn't want to run the risk of someone searching through my stuff, I shouldn't have trusted it to "those guys" in the first place.
14:36
Or make one too many comments like the one above. :)
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg It's not the risk of someone knowing who you are and searching through your stuff.
@Oliver Salzburg Google "project bluebeam"
Bob
Bob
That was always possible with targeted warrants.
It's the risk of them performing a search of everyone's stuff to mark certain people.
or "I could never murder anyone, or blow up a building. I've always wanted to go to manhattan to see the world trade center but some crazy terrorist jihadi's blew it up, the pigs"
Bob
Bob
14:37
Basically, searching without any cause. That's what a lot of this furore has been about.
@Bob They have my data, I'm sure they can search through it if they wanted. Maybe only some program does it to calculate which porn I like, but maybe some bored admin also does the same on weekends to see what kind of crazy people use their service
;p
@OliverSalzburg: or work out whether I am, in fact, a dog.
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Except in this case it's a government with the power to (at least for US citizens) declare you a terrorist and lock you up, forfeiting all rights.
I trust them with the data I give them, to the extent that I feel comfortable with someone else holding on to the kind of data I give them. But I don't trust them to be responsible with it
Bob
Bob
It's happened before.
14:39
@Bob Or, in my case, steal my great German engineering plans
@OliverSalzburg: the only secret private information anyone has on me is my password ;p
And then declare me a terrorist!
What probably bugs me the most about this media heat is that everyone seems to think the NSA are the only agency that has access like this
A couple of years ago, the German government actually had a trojan developed (the "Bundestrojaner") and it was hyped like crazy in the media
GCHQ probably does too
14:41
They still have it and they're still using it, but nobody gives a care any more
I have no idea who would do it here ;p
It's all just media hype, nobody really cares
Which is EVEN SCARIER
...except for us geeks anyway
@Bob: does the external sound card sound any better

Q: WPA2-enterprise in Windows 8 Pro

sohaibafifiI want to connect to my school network through a hotspot called utcpers, with encryption, using WPA2-Enterprise. I'm using a Broadcom 43224AGN 802.11a/b/g/n 2x2 wi-fi adapter. Using Windows 7 and Ubuntu, I can connect with the same credentials and settings described here, but Windows 8 fails to...

Looks like install a windows 7 driver?
Tried that
uh-oh
15:36
In fact that's what I put on my laptop originally when I upgraded because my manufacturer doesn't officially support 8
Then I tried Win8 drivers (for same chip), then 7 drivers again
Anyone else? :S
I could always update the drivers for them but I'm pretty sure that's illegal.
surprise surprise, problems with wifi! Clippy would say, "It sounds like you're part of the 92% majority of the computer-using population that has problems with WiFi. Would you like help?"
@allquixotic clippy <die> now
In totally not my intentions news: how does one go about updating a Cisco controller I have no physical access to?
@njallam uh... you talking about forcibly updating your university's AP/router? I'd start off by saying don't even try it unless you want to face criminal penalties for hacking
I mean if you didn't have physical access but you did have the admin password (obtained legally because you own the device), that's one thing
OK, back to driver hunting
it's not even necessarily drivers... it could just be flat-out incompatible
sometimes there is no solution
(without full source code access)
@OliverSalzburg: lol, princess bride quote ;p
I'm pretty sure "unpossible" is some kind of meme though. At least it is in the part of the internets I come from
@OliverSalzburg You are from HERE
don't deny it

15:50
if you have a powerfulish rig you could probably run linux as the base OS and run windows 8 in a VM... or just, you know, don't run windows at all
@allquixotic :D
Yeah.... 5 year old Asus netbook...
oh
well if I recall correctly, modern Windows wireless drivers implement a generic hardware abstraction layer interface, and Windows itself (Microsoft) provides the WPA supplicant
you have to go back to like Windows XP to see where that wasn't the case
Just to note, this all worked fine in Windows 7
I suppose I could rollback
I guess...
so Microsoft changed their WPA supplicant in Windows 8 and it broke compatibility with your uni's routers
15:54
I actually quite like the rollback to 7 idea
Boot times will be slower but I hibernate anyway
Funny thing is, they have Windows 8 tablets they are testing out. I have no clue how they are wirelessing those with an outdated AP.
unless you aren't being bitten by that particular bug
