@OliverSalzburg That is a weird requirement :P
@OliverSalzburg: which part of croniness is the problem?
there's a half dozen cron replacements
@OliverSalzburg: maybe use the at utility and seriously ugly scripting? at 9AM script.sh and have script.sh run a script that resets the script for 9AM at 10AM?
OHHHH
01:12
have you guys seen the new Mac pro?
@BenRichards TOTALLY worth it
Bob
Bob
01:54
@JourneymanGeek wat
> up to 12-core configurations
...that's so special!
@Bob: actually reminds me of a cray
Bob
Bob
> Doesn't get more taxing than Pixar.
and I THINK they used mini PCIe for the graphics cards
Bob
Bob
Not sure if serious.
Bob
Bob
01:56
@Jou is that article serious? O.O
Bob
Bob
easy access?!
well it is easy access
Bob
Bob
> But the new circular design means the new beasts are 1/8 the volume of the last iterations, while still allowing easy access to the guts for breezy-fast hardware upgrades.
I do not understand.
assuming you wanted to swap out the apple proprietary parts
Bob
Bob
01:57
@JourneymanGeek Yea, if you find sticking your arm into cramped spaces 'easy'.
I'm guessing the author was an apple fanboy
naw, you pop out the whole top
Bob
Bob
The 'reduced volume' still makes no sense.
Bob
Bob
The only thing I can think of is cooling.
And that guy does not mention cooling at all.
its 3 rectangular daughterboards around a central, massive heatsink
with a HUGE fan which sucks in air from the bottom to them
Bob
Bob
01:58
I wonder if Apple is trying to tell us something with the new "rubbish bin" Mac Pro.
XD
Its probably a great system until it breaks
or you need massive amounts of storage, and don't want to use t-bolt or a SAN
Bob
Bob
They're trying to fit what might very well be a server-class machine into a fancy case.
pretty much
Bob
Bob
Horrible waste of hardware...
well workstation
storage is... kinda limited
(and expensive)
Bob
Bob
02:01
Ya. Hence the waste of hardware :P
I do have a bias towards standards compliant systems I guess
Bob
Bob
These are (Apple) standards compliant.
lol
also forget about internal sound cards if you need midi
Bob
Bob
See, it's using the standard Apple ® Mac Pro ® Super Cool Awesome ® Rubbish Bin ® form factor!
(tho, nowadays there's actually dirt cheap midi capable DAWs)
lol
@Bob: I'm wondering if the PCI-e ports are standard mini PCIe
but I doubt, apple uses non standard msata already
Bob
Bob
02:04
> We'll just make our own standards!
Bob
Bob
(Insert Bender meme image here)
actually no
Bob
Bob
Covers everyone's use cases?
Quite the opposite.
(then there's that Apple lightning-to-HDMI adaptor. the one that has an ARM chip inside, and the shitty H.264-compressed output)
Bob
Bob
02:08
??
( I assume that linking an xkcd comic before hand would cover attribution. Especially for a one off gag. Else, this statement should.)
XD
XD
@Bob: lightning is just wierd
"lets go into a lot of trouble so folk can connect a connector either way
cause using a keyed connector is obviously too much work
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek What? The xkcd comic oneboxed anyway.
lol
look closer
Bob
Bob
@Jou don't forget, that lightning-to-HDMI adapter can't even manage 1080p last i heard
@JourneymanGeek Ah, I see.
I'm on mobile :P
Bob
Bob
02:12
Well, mobile in a tiny FF window :P

And this is why you don't order machines with 4 GB of RAM.
It was at 82% 'used' when the warning appeared... never seen that before.
Then ProcMon crashed. Then FF crashed..
:F
yeah. 4GB is not enough for anything these days
Bob
Bob
:p
Work machine. It's got a nice beefy i7-3770 in it, with 4 GB of RAM... -_-
I'm waiting for the day when Windows++ requires 20GB of ram and everyone is Internet
Bob
Bob
They even put a 7470 in it for Christ's sake.
Why all this crap? Why not more RAM? -_-
Oh god. Some guy on Toms Hardware. March 2013.
> 12gb or ram is an overkill. you need 4 to 8 gigs so you're paying for extra memory that will not be utilized. build your own computer...if you need help tom's members will make you a list of compatible parts and give you pointers on how to build your own pc
Bob
Bob
06:01
1. Memory is cheap.
2. Memory speeds things up.
excess memory can be used for caching
Bob
Bob
3. Memory lets you run more crap before things start crashing.
4. Memory is cheap.
Did I mention the low price of memory?
XD
@Bob: I think my argument for 16 gb was
I have 24 GB of RAM in my desktop and have yet to max that out.
And 8 GB in my laptop, which I rarely hit.
"its cheap. I can use dual channels. If I want to upgrade, I need to add 2 more sticks"
06:02
Four though? That's a bit uncomfortable.
Bob
Bob
It gives the biggest performance per dollar improvement.
All my machines are on 8 right now.
@Bob ehh, that honor arguably goes to SSDs
sigh have 2x 2 GB sticks but I can use only 3 gb :/
Bob
Bob
It's comfortable, though I'm considering pushing the desktop to 16.
@nhinkle SSDs are expensive, though.
@nhinkle: I disagree
Bob
Bob
06:03
And you won't notice it most of the time.
you can build a nice fast system without an SSD
Bob
Bob
SSDs have the most effect when cold starting the system and programs.
and SSDs trade off another useful thing
Bob
Bob
Once started, RAM cache is much faster.
I guess it's an issue of diminishing returns. If you have only 2GB of RAM, adding another 2GB will make a world of difference. If you have 6 GB of RAM, another 6 won't help you as much as moving from a 5400 rpm drive to an SSD.
06:04
What RAM cache programs do you guys use ?
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell Windows.
@nhinkle: I do have an old system with 2gb, does ok. other than the hard drives dying.
@HackToHell Microsoft Windows.
@HackToHell: the 'built in' caching of windows
16gb is just enough overkill for me ;p
Anyhow I need to get to bed... 'night folks.
06:05
heh, bad terms again :|
Bob
Bob
@nhinkle Again, it's an issue of whether you're accessing cold or hot (was the term "warm"?) data more often.
I would use 'hot' data.
But that is just based on agut feeling.
@HackToHell 32-bit OS eh? :b
@Leathe yes :'(
Bob
Bob
@nhinkle night
ARGH STUPID TOMCAT WHY WON'T YOU WORK
@Hennes I guess I might be confusing it with a 'warm cache'.
It's closely related anyway.
06:15
nnnnnnnnnnooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
my ice-tea carton is leaking
YYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeSssssssssssssss! ;-)
Ice tea carton. As in a drink?
Geek mode: First thought was Iced-Tea (java)
yes, as in ice-tea, the drinkable kind
Isn't ice-tea tea + ice ?
oh, apprently it's supposed to be "iced tea" then
06:17
But what is you make ice from tea. :)
BUT THAT'S IRRELEVANT. IT'S LEAKING
AAAHHHH
Bob
Bob
@Hennes My hatred for Java has grown by leaps and bounds today.
A lot of it due to Tomcat.
Thank Oracle
@Bob it's tomcat's fault ;p
Bob
Bob
06:19
@Hennes I'm not sure if it's Oracle or Apache's fault, at this point.
oh god, Tomcat

Ya.
yet another thing I will never touch.

Anyway, I got to run.
steam has way too many copies of tf2
And dota 2 does not appear in my libraray
Even though it's there
Must figure out what to delete
fuck there are two copies of dota 2
that reminds me, I need to play more Torchlight 2
Oh great bitcoin's block information file is 200 mb
and it's index file is 100 mb
you have two Team Fortress 2's in there o.O
correction: 3
ah, one of them is in backups
And i have tf2 gcf's in there
Two copies of dota 2 too
The downloading folder has another copy of it
Wow, I have 5.1 gb of Windows Updates

Hmm.
4 TB HDD for $190... (@Jou)
@Bob: the 5900 RPM seagate?
honestly? god I'm tempted ;p
nbcdfw.com/entertainment/the-scene/… All I have to say is. LET THE WOOKIE WIN.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek It's a ST4000DM000
So... 7200 RPM?
ooh nice
barracuda
then yeah, its cheap ;p
Bob
Bob
07:11
Actually, I'm not sure if it's 7200 or not.
@JourneymanGeek right price?
the only 4tb drive seagate has the 5900 rpm drive
ya, that drive's pretty much the cheapest 4tb drive there is
Bob
Bob
lol
I'll stick with 2x2TB
It's cheaper, too.
Worst case, get a caddy or three.
And maybe a PCIe SATA card.
lol
and slightly more reliable
hmm
blah, choices, choices ;p
hmm, the price I'd end up paying is ~235SGD
more smaller drives seems tempting
Bob

@JourneymanGeek Where?
but no hardware this month, I'm nearly broke
local store ;p

hey guys
if i need to delete a specific directory rm /path/to/directory/*
can i run the same command as above while still being in that directory
or i need to be at root
I'd personally run it one level about the directory.
its safer
Bob
Bob
@Saladin create a temp folder and try it to find out? :P
if you add a space in the wrong space, WHAM, nuked systen
07:24
hmm
Bob
Bob
@Jou arguable - sometimes, an absolute path is safer. sometimes.
Both have their caveats.
rm is a dangerous tool.
what other way i can remove anything from directory
winscp?
@Saladin: also, consider the use of rm -rf (CAREFULLY CAREFULLY CAREFULLY)
Did I mention carefully?
but I'm not using the rf switch
@Saladin: yeah, remote access might be a good idea if you have no clue what you're doing
07:25
i dnt want to remove any sub-directories just files
I prefer cyberduck to winscp
well i do have a clue but you guys scared me:(
XD
@Saladin: with good reason!
lol
i know thanks @JourneymanGeek and others
I don't want to be that guy
07:26

I was SUPPOSED to be spring cleaning the blog trello board
keep getting asked to help mom with baking buttermilk fantails ;p
hmm, actually kinda done

Oh wow.

That... NO

Konrad VilterstenI'm trying to update my Tortoise client but when I run the file (I'm logged in as an administrator), the process fails because it can't write to .../bin directory. Hm. Xbox One, $499. PS4, $399. Xbox has the advantage of letting you watch TV on it (after waving your arms wildly for half a minute), while PS4 has just about every other advantage. HMMMM.
lol
I'll stick to my PC ;p
Bob

Exactly.
PC wins over both in everything but maybe one or two exclusive games.

One commenter:
> The whole benefit to the Mac Pro was how expandable it was on the inside and just how much a tank it was.
Wait. It was expandable?
actually, yeah
it had standard HDD bays, and PCIe (maybe pci) ports
it was supposedly a pretty competent workstation
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek That's enough to qualify as expandable now?
from wikipedia
For internal expansion the current Mac Pro has four PCI Express (PCIe) 2.0 expansion slots. The 2008 model had two PCI Express (PCIe) 2.0 expansion slots and two PCI Express 1.1 slots, providing them with up to 300 W of power in total. The first slot is double wide and intended to hold the main video card, arranged with an empty area the width of a normal card beside it to leave room for the large coolers modern cards often use
thats about as good as most desktops
the new mac pro? no, zip, nada
unless you want to run a video card or storage off t-bolt
I'm talking about the cheesegrater mac pros, not the trashcan....
Bob
Bob
11:54
@JourneymanGeek What, just like the HDMI renderer in the lightning cable?
you can get a thunderbolt to PCIe adaptor in theory
no idea if it has a full x16 bandwidth, and would cost a lot
the old models have real PCI-e slots ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek It maxes out at 10Gbit/s over copper.
lol
I think someone was smoking something interesting when deciding to dump all the legacy ports ;p
Bob
Bob
PCIe v1 x16 would give you 96Gbit/s.
didn't say it was a good idea
Bob
Bob
11:57
@JourneymanGeek PCIe is legacy now?
@Bob: apparently it is to apple!
those seem to be some wierd varient of the mini ports
Bob
Bob
Well, they're off in their own world, with their own standards.
once again
I swear they must have gotten inspired by cray's old benches
Bob
Bob
The only difference between them and MS of the 90s is they haven't been sued over it yet.
They're just doing the suing.
actually, there's a lot of similarities
that design was also so they could cool efficiently

Q: Why are the tags "directory" and "folder" configured how they are, and not reversed?

killermistWhy was folder chosen as the authoritative tag and directory made the synonym instead of the other way around? Directories are always directories in filesystems. A folder is an almost-cardboard thing with a crease in it, used for holding papers and other stuff. I understand trying to make th...

meh
Bob
Bob
@Sathya I actually agree it's reversed :P
Not sure if it should be changed, though.
I feel like "folder" is just a more used term
Bob

I mean, are we going for correctness or familiarity?
@Leathe Exactly. But, it's not the technical term.
Even better.

A: Directory vs. Folder

mafutrctAs seen in this question, they are not the same. Authoritative answer given by Raymond Chen: Windows 95 introduced Windows Explorer and along with it the term folder. What is the relationship between folders and directories? Some people believe that Windows 95 renamed directorie...

@Bob I'm with you, but we're splitting hairs here
Bob
Bob
Basically, when dealing with Explorer, it's a folder. When dealing with the FS (e.g. msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.io.directoryinfo.aspx), it's a directory.
@Sathya Yea, not sure if it should be changed.
Also not sure how difficult it would be to change.
Most wouldn't care.
Most of the time it makes no difference.
12:18
just a click to get it reversed, but I'm still not sure I see the point. Type directory, see folder. Vice versa
Bob
Bob
Eh, if one is feeling nitpicky.
I honestly don't really care, but I'm all for correctness. Still, who's to say one is more correct than another in this context?
(though I haven't heard anyone call the Control Panel, or Printers dialog, a folder yet :P)
oh well, will wait for community votes & act accordingly, if someone's not done it by then

Hey, I know this is an iOS 7 question, but I don't have any site to ask it on, so here goes:
After installing the iOS 7beta on my iPhone, and restoring a backup taken with iOS 6, several apps get stuck in "waiting" mode. They are actually installed, and using spotlight to search for them allows them to open. Is there any way, short of editing the springboard plist, to fix this? I've already rebooted.
