Bitcoin, at its core, relies on hashing being performed by a widely distributed and unconnected collection of consumer hardware. Once specialised hardware takes over, you have a problem.
if the exponential increase continues, there'll be too little incentive for the common man to mine, but if that increase never happened then it'd be a "stupid" / "trivial" gold mine where you could cart hundreds of dollars out per month per GPU regardless of your electricity costs, and eventually it'd drive real currency inflation through the roof
@allquixotic: I kinda like the idea of cryptocurrency. Being of a somewhat libertarian persuation, I think it ought to be backed by a real commodity, or a basket of them

@JourneymanGeek yeah, but cryptocurrency isn't backed by anything -- the problem is that you can't re-use computing resources; once you've spent electricity + functioning ASICs to yield compute results, you can't stockpile those results in a basket and use them as backup for your currency... it just contributes to the cost of money (waste)
compare cryptocurrency "backed" by people computing hashes, vs. the USD of old that (until the mid-20th century) was backed by gold.... meaning, for every dollar note you held in your hand, it was worth some small portion of the gold stockpile, so even if everything went to hell in a handbasket, you would be entitled to get some gold for your notes, and gold has inherent value

like, many of the HiB games I only play for 10 or 15 minutes and decide it's crap or not my kinda game, but about one game per bundle is really worth it, and SR3 was the most super-worth it out of all the games they've ever had

@allquixotic They took the broken remote and asked for a discount (to which I agreed). The remote is only physically broken, you can re-assemble it and it will work :D
