02:37
@JourneymanGeek Yup, I do. I gave IE9 a shot when it came out, and as these trial periods go, I use it until I get sick of it. Funnily enough, I never got sick of IE9. Same with IE10. :P
So, I built my little brother's computer for college today. But POST gives me 3 beeps (indicating RAM error). I tested both sticks individually and in both slots on the motherboard. No dice. Anyone want to double-check to ensure that they actually are compatible with the motherboard I got?
Here's the motherboard: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/motherboards/desktop-motherboards/desktop-board-dh61ze.html
Here's the RAM I got: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6611013
I thought they would be compatible. But I would like a second opinion. I somehow doubt that I got two borked sticks of RAM (though I guess it's not unheard of).
@BenRichards: try the ram on another system to make sure?
hmm
I see a problem
biggest stick of tested memory is 4gb
oh, never mind, I'm being a neep
Heh, I'm not sure if my other computer supports DDR3. Will have to double check.
Oh, it does support DDR3! Good idea. I'll do that.
;)
I'd assume it does, especially since I think AMD supported DDR3 longer
02:50
Different motherboard
Aha
I'm also really hoping that the beep code is not a red herring and that it actually is something as simple as wrong/bad RAM. I'd hate to have to chase down a rogue defect.
and since your other system has DDR3, you can check with that, assuming its not the same type ;p
... god I am an idiot
True :P
I mean, it is the same type ;)
I found my missing 3.5mm -> 3.5mm cable
it was plugged into my speakers
this means once I wrangle this mess, I can experiment with onboard audio + my amp ;p
02:54
Hehe
/me is seriously thinking of dumping the old altec lansings
Aha
I will test the ram tomorrow or something. Don't feel like messing more with it tonight.
Also I can touch type with the onscreen keyboard! This is cool :P I don't think I could do this on the iPad. I hate that keyboard.
lol
the split keyboard MS uses is brilliant
02:58
I think I stripped some of the screws in the PSU somehow. I need to ask my dad for a fix.
I don't use the split keyboard much, actually. This is the regular onscreen keyboard. The split keyboard would be better if I had a device that was a little smaller and more comfortable to hold that way.
lol
@there's a special tool for those
I just use a dremel and convert it to a slotted screw ;p
if its a hex headed screw, you can very carefully use a pair of pliers to loosen em
No, I mean the screw hole. I think I used the wrong size screw and now the right screws won't stay in. The hole that I didn't do this with has a screw that fits just fine.
Yeah :P
you must have confused the two screw types!
one of the great mysteries of computing. why the hell they use m3 AND 6-32 screws
03:01
I did. They looked the same except for the color. I didn't see the other (correct) screws until I looked later since the ones I tried didn't fit properly.
yeah
its pretty stupid that they do
(tho my case uses three types of screws of different sizes, one for fans, one for PSU/motherboard fastening, one for 2.5mm drive installs
Yeah. I hate the screw assortment. Wish it all just snapped together instead. At least on some cases it can...
My old dell xps 410 has a phenomenal screwless case design. If you think you need a screwdriver, you're doing it wrong in that case. :P
lol
my current case comes pretty close
(tho, I did add a screw management system)
03:08
My cooler master does a lot of thumbscrews, but it's still not quite there.
@BenRichards: I can image a 99% tooless case ;p
just use rubber standoffs for the fans, noctua style, and drive caddies (and have specific 2.5mm bays somewhere you can slot them in...)

05:54
@Hennes Panopticlick?
@Hennes Generally, as long as you have no plugins installed (disable JS for added security), no, they can't.
I believe the main methods for listing fonts are Java and JS. Maybe Flash.
@JourneymanGeek @Sathya Gems? :P
@Bob: I think thats just sad ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...I should probably check my speakers.
what happened to them?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Lost a 3.5mm extension cable a while ago.
lol
I'd actually dump my speakers if I didn't need them for gaming
Bob
Bob
05:58
@Hennes Also, using a default/common user agent would mask any OS details. Don't use a 'clean' one, since they're rare and unique.
@JourneymanGeek You... use speakers for gaming? o.O
Bob
Bob
...
its about all I use them for ;p
Bob
Bob
And here I am, gaming with a headset :P
I use headphones for music, and sometimes for videos ;p
Bob
Bob
05:59
tbh, I've taken to listening to music with the headset too. No need for speakers here, either.
lol
my roomie gets cranky if it isn't indian classical ;p
Bob
Bob
o.O
Indian... classical?
@JourneymanGeek How do you game with speakers, there's always someone swearing
@HackToHell: ironically? no one cares ;p
@Bob: its only for me tho, the sister in law can listen to movie songs and the roomie dosen't care ;p
Bob
Bob
06:01
I'm not sure what Indian classical is.
Bob
Bob
Ok, I know now -_-
Well, to each their own.
example!
( if @HackToHell dosen't know who is singing this, his parents will likely be dissapointed in him ;p)
@JourneymanGeek Last time I was playing tf2 with speakers on, little kids started fighting and were screaming :D
@JourneymanGeek No idea who is that :P
!!!
MS Subbulakshmi ;p
06:03
Oh she is MS Subbulakshmi
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell Ah, those prepubescent voices swearing over mic chat...
@HackToHell: I don't usually game socially ;p
@Bob It's really annoying, I end up voting to kick/ban them ;p
Bob
Bob
> Rating: MA15+
-_-
(That rating was a bit weird, though. There's so much gore in CS1.6! (/s))
ESRB: M
PEGI: 16+
BBFC: 15
OFLC: MA15+
Bob
Bob
06:07
OFLC is the Aus one.
@Bob 15+ is okay for gore ;p
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell Seriously, though. What gore? o.O
Bob
Bob
I was talking about CS1.6.
Bob
Bob
06:10
Unless the server has a gibbing plugin installed, in which case... bleh.
lol
I've never really seen game violence as 'violence'
I've never wanted to kill people with the bastard child of a circular saw, and an axe playing boderlands 2 as a psycho
tf2 has ridiculous plugins
Found one server that allowed me to resize yesterday :D
Bob
Bob
There's always ChickenMod for CS1.6...
You can turn into a chicken! Low grav, high speed, tiny size, peck your enemies to death!
06:12
lol
We have boxing mods in tf2:D
Also there is an official melee map
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell You mean like this? :P
lol, you can't taunt kill tho ;p
There are a lot of awesome ways to kill people ;p
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell You just got yourself on a list :P
06:27
@Bob oh noes ....
:D
07:06
yay
worked out something to tie up the about 2 meters of excess cables on my headphones ;p
@bob apparently you have to open a ticket to get yourself unsuspended
suspended from?
I was suspended for not paying bills :p
07:17
hello guys
in computenode 240 of IBM it says 2/2
2/2, Intel Xeon E5-2600 Series Processor
what does it mean 2 sockets ?
i wanted to know total cores..
@Saladin 2 processors !
It has wood, so it obviously improves my sound quality over 9000%
@Saladin: without context we'd have no idea what you're talking about
its just general h/w specs i want to know about the mode x240
the core / socket specfications
on ibm site it says 2/2
07:19
what's a mode x240?
its what IBM says
computenode servers
12 or 16 cores
trouts @Saladin
seriously dude.
CONTEXT
DO.
YOU.
HAVE.
IT?
context about what ? i said it before i just want to find the number of socket the hardware supports
i don't know if this number changes per context
07:21
without actually telling us what this hardware is?
wait
the processor is 2/2, Intel Xeon E5-2600 Series Processor
ahh, now we are cooking with gas!
@JourneymanGeek I Haz no permission
07:23
I believe it means it has 2 sockets with both those sockets filled up when you buy it
@HackToHell: fixed
paracord (I have lots of the stuff) and 2 balls out of my bag of wooden balls ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek You need to go to your nearest river and hunt for stones.
@Bob: or the nearest acquarium ;p
Bob
Bob
@Saladin Contrary to popular belief, we can not read minds.
@bob i apologize
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Huh? Didn't you know? You need genuine river stones for the best quality! None of that cheap aquarium stuff.
@Saladin There's no need to. Just keep it in mind for next time :)
07:28
@Bob: naw, you just coat em in snake oil ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Bag of... wooden balls?
@Bob: yeah ._.
Bob
Bob
Uhm.. on one hand, I'm curious. On the other, I probably don't want to know.
picked up at daiso ;p
@Bob: dollar store sells random wooden things, they're good, moderately expendable things to fiddle with ;p
in this case I wanted something I could use to act as paracord ends, and keep em from fraying
so drilled a little hole with a screwdriver handle with a drill bit on it, and superglued the balls on it
What is the default encoding of Linux(Ubuntu), UTF-8 or ANSI ?
nano is behaving wierdly
line breaks are not being detected @_@
Bob
Bob
07:37
...
O.O
@HackToHell UTF-8 and ANSI are identical for the lower codepoints.
@Bob lol, did it get linked in reddit
India FTW !
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell Yes, yes it did.
I don't even...
@Bob uh huh
what is this I don't also...
Then there's this
read the description ;p
07:40
ahh ok
fff wrong video
it's from supporters of nithyananda
Bob
Bob
08:09
hmm
something weird
on my desktop, Thunderbird disconnects now and then, and I need to click get mail to reconnect
on my laptop, it stays connected at all times (and alerts me when I have new mail), even after hibernation/switching networks (auto reconnect)
anyone got an idea? :S
I do have it set to use IDLE
Bob
Bob
...that unreadable JPEG...

cpx
cpx
@Bob I'm going to try a third party partition manager to make the partition of C:/ since windows 8's default partition manager failed to do so.
Bob
Bob
@cpx Do not do it from within Windows!
You should never try to manipulate the file system when it's mounted, let alone when the OS is booted from it!
I've said this before, grab a bootable CD, preferably a Linux Live CD with gparted on it, and use that.
You will have to perform a boot repair of Windows afterwards.
NTFS stores a mirror MFT, a CRITICAL file, midway through a new partition.
You CANNOT move this from within Windows, and even a third-party partioner is horribly risky, if it even lets you do so.
cpx
cpx
I see. I've also tried boot time defragmentation which includes MFT but it didn't help.
Bob
Bob
...that defragments the MFT itself. It does not move the metadata files around.
There is a reason the mirror MFT is logically/physically separated from the primary MFT (though it's only a partial mirror, not a full mirror...)
First thing, go burn a bootable Windows repair CD.
You will need it to repair your installation after repartitioning.
Then grab Parted Magic or GParted Live.
Use that to repartition.
That is all I will say.
It's your choice if you want to use another method; just be aware of the risks.
Even repartitioning like this is somewhat risky, though usually turns out fine assuming you let it finish.
cpx
cpx
Would HP Recovery DVDs help?
Bob
Bob
10:03
Maybe.
Depends on what kind.
Some of them won't let you do anything other than a full reimage.
Some will give you the standard Windows installation CD menu, which includes boot repair.
You can burn a dedicated repair CD from within Windows. It's an option somewhere. Use the start menu search, or Google, and burn it to a blank CD.
Note that the repair CD is used for fixing certain parts of the OS, and cannot perform a full reinstallation
cpx
cpx
Thanks, I'll look it up.
if its windows 7 you can just download an installer cd
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek It's 8.
Also, it's a rather big download :\
cpx
cpx
I have been wondering if there's a chance that I'd lose all the other data on my partitioned drives or any data on OS drive If I try to install full OS image from HP Recovery DVDs? Since installing OS from HP Recovery DVDs means that all drivers, system files etc will be restored?
more likely its a certainty
Bob
Bob
10:16
It's hard to say for sure.
But there's always the risk.
You can only know for sure by asking HP, or, better yet, testing in a VM.
recovery disks usually do that in my experience
its a safer bet to assume it does that

1 hour later…
11:20
After Earth is really boring @_@
Don't go to see it
Bob
Bob
11:31
Ahhhh PDF passwords.
The most useless thing ever.
cpx
cpx
I guess I will buy Windows 8 Installation Disk in that case if recovery deletes everything, which I think it certainly does when reformatting the drive before copying from OS image.
I heard the price for Windows 8 has been raised by 10x since January this year.
@cpx Where did you hear that?
@cpx: you may not need to buy an installation disk
do you have enough space to do a full disk backup?
cpx
cpx
11:51
@OliverSalzburg I read somewhere around the website about the price in a different country outside US. Here's what Wikipedia says:
| other_articles = Features new to Windows 8List of features removed in Windows 8Windows 8 editions Windows Store | date=April 2012}} Windows 8 is a version of Microsoft Windows (an operating system developed by Microsoft) for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, tablets, and home theater PCs. Development of Windows 8 started before the release of its predecessor, Windows 7, in 2009. It was announced at CES 2011, and followed by the release of three pre-release versions from September 2011 to May 2012. The operating system was released to manufacturin...
@JourneymanGeek Well, no it's around 1 TB. I was thinking that instead of spending money on extra backup disk maybe I'd rather just buy windows?
@cpx: you already have a licence tho
Bob
Bob
@cpx Well, both are valid options.
Buying an additional non-OEM licence would let you migrate it to a different machine in future.
A separate disk would allow you to have a backup, which you should always have anyway.
An additional licence would not protect your data against hardware failure.
cpx
cpx
It's a regular version known as "Windows 8 Single Language". It's not even Pro or Ultimate.
Bob
Bob
@cpx There is no "Ultimate".
cpx
cpx
I see.

I'm going to connect the old computer which has Windows XP SP3 as OS to the new computer with Windows 8 via LAN wire to transfer some stuff.
I have never done a LAN connection before so, I guess I'm going to look it up on Google specifically for Windows 8 because it will be a bit strange for me to figure out the networking controls.
what is broken with your windows 8 box again?
this works yay !
cpx
cpx
@JourneymanGeek It came pre-installed with Windows 8 system files placed on a single drive. Yesterday, I tried to make separate partitions to store other data stuff but Windows 8 default Disk management system wouldn't allow it. It said that I cannot 'shrink' it less than around 450 GB because there are system files in the middle which aren't movable.
13:39
@cpx: OH
@cpx: it boots then?
cpx
cpx
@JourneymanGeek Yes. I haven't done anything with it yet. I'm not just happy with it because of it and also if in case I need to re-install Windows 8 then HP Recovery Drive won't help because it will simply restore the OS and delete all the other personal files. So, I was thinking to buy either a backup disk first or a new Windows Pro. Maybe I'll end up buying both.
@cpx: there's something called windows 7 backup
it does an old school full system backup you can restore from, and creates a boot disk
also there's a recovery drive option for windows
buying the backup disk is the eminently more sensible idea here
13:57
@cpx if you have a separate machine laying around with a terabyte so of space, you can pick up Windows Home Server 2011 off of newegg and do nightly incremental backups. This way, if you do have to restore, you can pick which restore point and it will copy the entire system back over including programs and documents. This will help protect against having your disk damaged in case of dropping the laptop.
WHS2011 cost around $50 currently.
Bob
Bob
14:12
@kobaltz The primary drive is a terabyte.
So, for backup purposes, it would be a good idea to have at least one-and-a-half times that.
...stupid MVPs on MS Answers.
One of them just posted a link to a Google search as an 'answer'. Guess what the first result was?
@Bob His answer ? :P
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell Got it in one!
14:28
yay ;p
gah even after installing Xposed and a module, can't get Google Play to download stuff when i reverse tether @_@
boop
anyone want to take a look at my possible sound blog post? ;p
I just started writing it, might add it to the trello board if I can get part 2 done and I'm happy with the whole thing in the morning

Hm, NSA gathers more info about Indians than Americans. Why?
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino Is that per person, or overall?
@jokerdino: its right next to pakistan?
they're worried they'll outsource intelligence analysis to india?
14:39
@Bob overall
6.1 billion intel collected in march 2013
Bob
Bob
o.O
Is "intel" a unit of measurement now?
@jokerdino That's a LOT of info
@jokerdino: more seriously, I think they just vacuumed all the intel up, and indians do call home a lot
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino India has four times the population of the USA.
That might explain it.
14:41
China's great firewall helped it :D
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino I assumed you were talking about the recent revelations.
Chinese firewall is clever
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino Then, if we assume a certain amount of obtainable (and obtained) information (how do you measure that, anyway??) per person...
@Bob It's more outrageous than my own government spying on me.
14:43
@jokerdino true that
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino I'm not saying this is good or anything.
Just saying that if they are indiscriminately collecting data, logic dictates that larger populations would produce more data.
@Bob yep
Bob
Bob
Not accounting for percentage of population 'connected', though.
@HackToHell Apparently, a lot of what they collect is which sites you visit, not the specific transmitted data.
I can only imagine because of piracies and spam networks.
Bob
Bob
So, Tor would help (but it's really not big enough to cope), but HTTPS wouldn't really.
Funny how the rest of the world is outraged over this, but the American people don't seem to care. Most of them.
And their media is suspiciously silent...
14:47
It probably isn't a point of bother yet.
14:59
@jokerdino: well, the indian government is too inept to do anything about it
what say. they are probably on CIA's payroll trying to keep China in check.
