i also had a portable HDD that bit the dust a couple of weeks ago
though that was due to certain people's ignorance on how hard drives work -_-
thats harsh :/
live and learn. thankfully big flash drives have gotten pretty darn cheap
@tapped-out They did not try to open it?
@tapped-out Like 32GB ones? I think there's now 1TB flash drive.
@Boris_yo they were carrying it on top of their laptop to another room and the drive slipped, came unplugged, and fell to the ground
@JourneymanGeek So your dog smokes pipes?
13:10
pfft
@tapped-out Auch!
thats a soft coated wheaten
that looks nothing like a mini schauzer/mystery mutt cross.
Bob
Bob
Yay! Under 1000 tabs!
lol
I'm suprised your browser didn't explode ;p
Bob
Bob
Memory usage has... grown?
To 2.5 GB.
13:11
@Bob 30% Completed...
Bob
Bob
I really need a 64-bit build of Firefox...
@JourneymanGeek It's currently in the process of doing so :P
in slow motion? ;p
Bob
Bob
oh yea
I was wondering what you thought of htis? mwave.com.au/product/…
@Bob I thought I have 64-bit Firefox?
Bob
Bob
I might buy it.
@Boris_yo Never got around to compiling it.
Prob is, i don't particularly like that keyboard layout :(
13:13
@Bob: never heard of it, but that's the second cheapest mechanical I have heard of
Bob
Bob
Second-cheapest?
what's wrong with the layout?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek It was at $100 a few months ago.
@JourneymanGeek I prefer the US one with the smaller enter key and longer backspace.
And the backslash above the enter.
@Bob: TVS gold's the cheapest. Tried to talk @jokerdino or @HackToHell into getting one for science
@Bob Always wondered why is it called mechanical.
13:14
@Bob: amusingly, I prefer the layour you dislike
Bob
Bob
lol
I LOVE the invert L shaped enter key
Bob
Bob
All of my keyboards use the other, and I use the backslash a lot.
It's far too much trouble to adapt.
And I can't just replace my laptop keyboard.
most of my keyboards are US layout :/
@Bob Yeah especially switch of CTRL and ALT on HP and lenovo laptops.
13:16
@JourneymanGeek lol
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo What?
Ctrl and Alt are always in the same place, unless you're on a Mac.
@Bob I say that I have lenovo and CTRL and ALT are misplaced i.e switched places. Same layout I saw on HP laptops.
thinkpads have the fn key at the bottom left
Bob
Bob
What the hell is a plunger switch?
13:18
there's a good reason tho
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo I have never seen those two keys swapped.
o0
never seen anything like that
Bob
Bob
Sometimes, the Ctrl and Fn keys are swapped.
But never ctrl + alt
@Bob Correct sir. It is CTRL and Fn.
basically your standard membrane keyboard with a plastic bit 'emulating' a true mechanical switch
13:20
@Bob 45$ o0
Bob
Bob
-_-
@Bob I also hate when Enter key is long shaped and not _|
I confuse it with Backspace.
Bob
Bob
...you confuse the smaller enter key with the backspace?
I don't even... how?!
ooh flipkart has a 50% off on all games
@Bob I confuse when I don't look at the keyboard when typing. They are almost same length.
Bob
Bob
13:22
but..
Bob
Bob
do you feel the length of each key? o.O
most of us rely on the position of the key...
;p
maybe its not where he expects it to be
Bob
Bob
if he expects the enter key to be where backspace is, neither layout is going to help
cool
price isn't too bad
but I just can't justify a $90 keyboard
I THINK @benrichards has one actually
@Bob: blah
13:25
wtf is this flipkart.com/…
lol
@HackToHell: it keeps your mouse cord in the air
watever -_-
>_>
I have a ... slightly fancier one...
@Bob Yeah I miss the key I want. That is the problem and press Backspace and Enter.
@JourneymanGeek So you can hang yourself?
@JourneymanGeek pic ?
Bob
Bob
13:27
@JourneymanGeek uh.. how about a bit of string? -_-
o.O
@Bob WTF...
@Bob: funny story that, had a bunch of vouchers that were expiring, I'd JUST bought my mouse, and that thing looks SERIOUSLY cool >_>
and no, I wouldn't recommend getting one in most cases
@JourneymanGeek You are Ravi?
@JourneymanGeek Here's my number
So call me maybe
Nice mouse.
13:30
yeah, it is
the first one was DOA tho ;p
this is my second
Hate this annoying Windows restart to apply downloaded updates. Never update unless it is important.
@JourneymanGeek Why you need your mouse cord to be held in the air? Does it really bother?
@Boris_yo: I'd say its a 1% thing
@JourneymanGeek Just to invent that gadget and sell. Because even 1% counts.
this specific one ALSO has USB ports, and that's pretty sweet. But I'd think if I didn't have spare vouchers, I wouldn't have gotten it
@JourneymanGeek These vouchers make you feel missing a world if left unused?
13:33
(its a fair bit more expensive than that CM, and the razer equivilent)
@Boris_yo: eh. maybe!
tho I have a 100 dollar voucher off the army I can't use for anything ;p
That's the catch of Groupon so you are left with that feeling. But since you try to avoid it it is what drives Groupon.
Psychological research has shown that people are more affraid to lose than want to win. o.0
Wait...
I liked the damned thing
its SERIOUSLY cool. the built in USB hub's pretty sweet as well
but BUUUUTTT
Unlike some of my other gear, Its not something I'd recommend without reservations
"My table is a complete cable-strewn mess. I need some way to handle my mouse and stuff more neatly.... OH, and I want it to look cool!"
then yes, I would recommend this
If you JUST want a mouse bungee, just get a chinese cheapie off fleabay first
if the concept works for you then consider getting a better one
13:38
the 'gantry' has a purpose here
@JourneymanGeek based on a scorpion o0?
oooh g+ identified my cat photos :D
amazing
@HackToHell: Not really
why ;p
@HackToHell: I'm not sure who copied who ;p
the apuri has a USB hub built in
my review ;p
@JourneymanGeek cool font ;p
13:52
roccat's stuff tends to be SERIOUSLY well made, slightly finicky on the software side, and somewhat pricy ;p
@HackToHell: standard G+ font methinks
14:21
and.. the drive is no longer detected by windows
or bios
holy cow, 707 messages while i was sleeping
you guys have been busy :D
lol
2 were mine!
will take a look at the disk tommorrow
14:49
It's anger management for regular people but it's cable management for IT technicians.
@allquixotic Are you catching up?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic We'll make sure to give you 500+ pings tomorrow! :D
@Bob So it was 707 pings that he received?
I don't think he was talking about pings...
probably "load to my last message"
15:04
@OliverSalzburg You heard about birds falling from the sky and dead fish?
@Boris_yo Yes, constantly
I can't even take a step in front of the house without some stupid fish falling on my head
@OliverSalzburg That's 3rd apocalyptic sign.
And I'm like, get the eff out of here you stupid fish! This isn't the ocean! WTF?!
can't tell if serious xD
@OliverSalzburg Do you carry fish with you for gang fights?
hey
hey
15:09
hello
I've tried to install League of Legends and when I ran that game, my screen "broke". Now I have a white layer on the screen
hey
hey
please help me
that white layer takes ~40% of the screen
it's probably broken and I can do nothing about it? because even when I am booting I see that thing
@hey Did you check the cable
hey
hey
it's laptop
might be a GPU issue
15:12
@hey try plugging in an external monitor
hey
hey
don't have one...
ich
yeah, probably GPU. what laptop?
hey
hey
i tried going to windows, to ubuntu, tthe same
and it shows this white layer on the booting
@Boris_yo I don't get into many gang fights
hey
hey
and when i do printscreen, this layer is not seen, so it's probably over...
15:13
prolly a hardware issue, could be a bad cable or a fried chip :(
Get it to a repair station
Trying booting without the battery
hey
hey
how will it boot without battery?
run it off the AC
hey
hey
thanks, i'll try.
hope you get it resolved, graphics issues suck D:
15:29
hey guys
How does .NET framework work ?
I have like 4 or 5 different versions of it installled
@EinsteinsGrandson It's basically a series of pipes
I mean, I can't uninstall all of them but one ... .uninstlaling NET Framework 2.0, 3.0 , 3.5 and keeping only 4.0 ?
8
Q: Do I need all Microsoft .NET Framework versions?

Joy SeacatI have 4 Microsoft .NET Framework versions: 1.1 2.0 Service Pack 2 3.0 Service Pack 2 3.5 SP1 Do I need them all?

official answer
So, I will better keep all of them
;o)
@EinsteinsGrandson Information provided "as is" with no warranties or guarantees.
He's an MVP, so it's not official
15:34
OK, but still... it's also said in the link Oliver provided
That it's better to keep them all
;o)
hey
hey
@tapped-out I tried, it didn't work :(
0
Q: White layer on almost half of the screen

heyI downloaded League of Legends just to try and when I launched a game, white layer appeared. Here's a screen: It's probably dead, nothing can be done now, right?

ouch, you got LoL'ed
hey
hey
yeah...
why did i even need to try this piece of shit game
@allquixotic does it have a propensity for killing graphics cards?
hey
hey
and I was "turning up" the light with F5 when it happened
does this fact change anything?
15:55
could mean nothing, or it could mean that it's the screen and not the GFX card
pretty... strange... timing for the screen to go out
but a screen repair is usually less expensive than replacing the laptop GFX (it usually needs a whole new logic board)
Bob
Bob
16:07
@EinsteinsGrandson 1.1, 3.5 and 4.5
1.0 and 1.1 used the same version of the CLR. Likewise for 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and 4,0, 4.5.
nice graphic here
@OliverSalzburg that is the most horribly answered question I've seen
all the answers contradict each other
and half are just plain wrong
@Bob i like that infographic, that actually helps =D
So, @Bob what do you mean by that?
;o)
that if I have 3.5, i don't need to have 3.0 and 2.0 installed?
16:32
@EinsteinsGrandson right
Bob
Bob
16:50
@EinsteinsGrandson More specifically, 3.5 is a superset of 3.0, which is a superset of 2.0
3.5 essentially contains 3.0 and 2.0
but 4.5 is not the subset of all , right?
Bob
Bob
4.5 is essentially a superset of 4.0
superset, not subset
4.0 would be a subset of 4.5
though they did increment the CLR version number
> Although the .NET Framework 4.5 is an in-place update of the .NET Framework 4, the underlying CLR version number is referred to as CLR 4.5.
Down to under 950 tabs! :D
@allquixotic would still complain, though :P
@Bob you must have an ungodly amount of RAM...
Bob
Bob
@tapped-out most tabs are unloaded
FF is currently using 1.6 GB of 8 GB of RAM
ah okay
meanwhile, i have 11 tabs open and Chrome's using 1 GB of 2 xD
for all the crap FF gets, they've really worked on memory usage
17:03
I am sorry, I meant the superset
I use Opera and can have 100+ open tabs at the same time
having only 2 GB of RAM
From time to time, it crashes though
;o)
FF, Safari, IE can't do that
I don't use Chrome, so I can't say if it can...
Bob
Bob
below 850 now :D
@tapped-out they've improved that a lot since the days of 3.5.x and 4.x
Chrome is the memory hog now
@EinsteinsGrandson FF can't do that?
Bob
Bob
Ahem.
After like 20 tabs, it freezes
though hopefully switching to Blink will help reduce code bloat a bit

@EinsteinsGrandson I had over 50 on a machine with 2 GB of RAM
and that was before the bulk of the memory improvements
those 1380 were in FF ?
17:26
"Didn’t think Kim Dotcom could cry me river."
Who wrote that? Holy cow...
Bob
Bob
down under 700 tabs :D
what are you doing with these tabs, disposing of them? bookmarking? Evernote?
Bob
Bob
closing a bunch
chucking some into Pocket
saving some
> View his paten here on Goolge.
17:38
I have like 1 millions saved tabs
;o)
or maybe 100.000
I didn't count it
So, it's normal to have 1380 tabs open
18:18
@Tanner I don't know what's worse, that he didn't proof read, or that he might have O__O
18:35
Oh, how much I missed the Pringles smiley.

1 hour later…
20:03
@JourneymanGeek @Bob Not that particular keyboard. I have Cooler Master Storm Trigger with Cherry MX Browns.

3 hours later…

Hmm... Got a dodgy question... probably not fit for main site... I have a customer that I need to access but their ip has changed... I know that the ISP has put this customer in a /21 block so there is only ~2k valid addresses... I Don't think it is illegal as I am only accessing something publically available and not hacking/cracking... I know how to port scan, but, anyone know a bulk way to pass the output? e.g. want to connect to them all on port 80 and just see if it returns a string.
22:50
hmm, in the entire subnet, only 4 responded to that port, and I found it manually on the second... Still, if anyone knows, I would love an automated way for future use!
IMO I don't see why this isn't suited for main...
because, it could be used for evil! :)
lol, mind you, I suppose most things can be twisted that way...
laughs maniacally well yes
23:16
@William Hello William, a few months ago I recall seeing a powershell script on the microsoft script repository that was designed to poll a particular port until a valid response was returned. I guess this could be modified quite easily for your purpose? I seem to recall that this script was primarily written for checking whether RDP 3389 was up.
rather than keep polling though - in your case you'd want it to try once and then move onto the next destination ip.
23:44
@Fitzroy Thanks - interesting... I don't suppose you have a link? If not, I'll try to find it in a minute
@WilliamHilsum I can probably dif
@WilliamHilsum I can probably dig the link up.
sorry - dont know what the hell just happened to my pc there
alternatively theres a very good http com object i've used in the past. its accessble in vbscript and therefore must be accessible from powershell too.
there's probably a .net object no doubt but i've more experience of com.
for those who were in chat last night and wanted a report back on exhaust shroud on vs. exhaust shroud off (@JourneymanGeek, @OliverSalzburg)
No exhaust shroud
--------------------
Average CPU temp = 79 degrees C
Max CPU temp = 81 degrees C
Max case temp = 70 degrees C

Exhaust shroud attached
------------------------
Average CPU temp = 79 degrees C
Max CPU temp = 80 degrees C
Max case temp = 69 degrees C
not a statistically significant difference
