@OliverSalzburg Conversions all done :P
10, 15, 18 and 25 CRF versions based on the command from slhck
original was a 1080p@30fps capture from Fraps (7 GB) - not sure how @allquixotic got a 22 GB one...
25 CRF has some areas with noticeable pixellisation (those blocky things), mostly where it fades in and out
18 CRF looks close to perfect
that's 280 and 620 MB
I think something between might be good
I've uploaded the 25 CRF one
is an HTTP download alright for you?
"[2013-04-22] FIX: Mp3tag v2.55 did not work on computers with older CPUs anymore (e.g, Pentium III, Athlon XP, ...)."
o0
Bob
Bob
lol
kkapture had options for VfW and DS
If you want to try an HTTP download: eludownloads.tk/ajaxplorer/… (chunked download is available) (I can give you SFTP/SCP access if you want)
I'll upload the 20 CRF one as soon as it's done encoding
o0
tried downloading that, FF asks me if I want to open it in wordpad...
wiiiieeerrrd
Bob
Bob
01:45
@JourneymanGeek uhhh... broken MIME?
:P
I uploaded it through FTP, not Ajaxplorer
so that might have broken it
lol
I was thinking maybe its file association wierdness or something. twas just wierd
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek it seems to recognise it as a MPEG file
Firefox says MP4 video.
And offers to open it in WMP
yeah, i need to work out what's happening once this downloads
might be simple FF wierdness
Bob
Bob
I wonder - what's the download speed?
226 kbps
tho I'm also torrenting, and I'm on a wireless connection
Bob
Bob
01:52
lol
That server should be on a (shared) 100Mbit connection
I can get ~500kB/s downloading from it, which isn't too bad
lol
this is a suboptimal network ;p
seriously pondering picking up a pair of homeplug adaptors to test
Bob
Bob
I need to grab a proper storage VPS
but I'm not sure how it'll work cause of the wierd config of my apartment
its actually two apartments grafted together
(it was built that way, top floors in my neighbourhood are like that. Its like the most plebian proletarian penthouse imaginable ;p)
Bob
Bob
how about setting up a bunch of wireless repeaters in the middle?
oh, we added a second router
everything's still bunched up in one half of the apartment
its inefficient
and homeplug adaptors seem SERIOUSLY cheap
still thinking of it. don't think I'll have spare cash for a while, with the headphones (if I can get them), hdd(s) I may need, and the mini mill I have my eyes on
Bob
Bob
02:02
@JourneymanGeek how cheap? :P
I seem to recall 30 bucks
Bob
Bob
still a good $50 for two here
thats still cheaper than a router, and faster than a repeater
and I note a LOT of stuff I ponder dosen't happen ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I can get a cheap switch ( which is all you need in this scenario - and a closer equivalent ) for $8
@Bob: cabling!
else I could just use the router I already have and is essentially free
Bob
Bob
02:06
@JourneymanGeek how long?
@Bob: VERY
Bob
Bob
30m would cost about $10
@Bob: and istallation, and dad bitching about it ;p
tho, I could get another DD-WRT router, and use it in bridge mode.
(which should let me have my own, fast lan between my systems)
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek or, any other cheap switch :P
@Bob: wiring stuff up WILL be a pain in the butt
Bob
Bob
02:11
oh crap
@JourneymanGeek are you still downloading?
I need to upload a 501 MB file, but the current upload cap is set at 500 MB :P
oh is done ;p
Bob
Bob
requires a server restart to change
ok, so I won't be interrupting you?
newp
also, thats not a mad cat @OliverSalzburg ;p
Bob
Bob
hm
actually, I could just upload over FTP
probably a better idea, I can at least throttle uploads

2 hours later…
03:49
@WilliamHilsum Just saw that tweet... Awesome
04:04
@allquixotic LOL !
@HackToHell You forgot Trollenese!
04:38
Anyways, bed time for me. Night all

@Sathya I've updated my answer but a downvote, seriously? — StarCub 2 hours ago
post a wrong (and earlier useless) answer & crib about a downvote?
good morning friends
Bob
Bob
05:52
@OliverSalzburg I've just uploaded the 20 CRF one
is that good enough?
I have some compressed with better quality (and a 7 GB uncompressed [? maybe FRAPS compressed]) if you want it

2 hours later…
07:53
Oh those Saudis. Weren't they skiing as well with their cars?
naw, they were too busy changing the tyres ;p
Does Windows still do this?
Haven't they learned anything? :D
08:53
lol
It warns you weeks in advance
and then dosen't update when you shut it down, you NEED to reboot explicitly ;p
Bob
Bob
@slhck either disable it in group policy or set it to ask you before downloading nad installing updates
I was ranting about it in here not too long ago
@JourneymanGeek NO way to cancel
@JourneymanGeek warning isn't very prominent,n ot is it very useful when you're going for the month of uptime
@Bob: I'm annoyed it dosen't update on shutdown too ;p
09:12
Well that's it. I have to do some report for my dad, and it involves creating charts and tables in Excel, then copying them to Word. I thought I'd do it on the Mac, but it crashes Excel after I copy a chart. And the charts swallow the legend after being copied. I mean, come on, it's a frigging image …
So, I turn on my Windows PC after one year of not using it. Takes 10 minutes to boot up, then installs a gazillion updates, then it takes me another five minutes to open up Word and Excel. Has no internet connection although everything's plugged in.
It's now the sixth year in a row I'm putting up with this crap. Should've written one big script that generates the data and a PDF right away.
Bob
Bob
@slhck Uhm... did it magically update to Windows 8 in that time? :P
No, I don't know what the hell it did… it basically was unresponsive most of the time.
Bob
Bob
In all seriousness, though, Windows works pretty well most of the time.
Well, it doesn't for me. And I've never used that machine—it's just excruciatingly slow and broken.
I might as well put Mint on it.
09:27
lol
Bob
Bob
@slhck Well, a slow machine certainly does not help.
It's not too bad. A C2D 2.2 GHz with 512 MB RAM. It should run Windows without any visual effects turned on.
@JourneymanGeek that's the stupidest & most annoying thing, ever.
that sounds like less ram than I remember any of our c2ds having
I think we had a solo with 512 tho
@Sathya: especially when I actually DO shut down this box for night ;p
09:33
@JourneymanGeek yeah
It's some Optiplex machine I snitched from my dad's office :P
then I turn it on, and its like UPDATES BYOTHCH, and I'm like NOOOO YOU STUPID THING, WHY U NO UPDATE WHEN I SHUT YPU DOWN!
eww dell
hahaha
one case when unintentional spelling misteaks make things better XD
Bob
Bob
is it just me, or has the current SE revision disappeared from the bottom of pages?
@slhck that's pretty crap, tbh
09:40
@Bob It's there for me.
Bob
Bob
considering the minimum required RAM for the 32-bit version of 8 is 1 GB...
when you're running an OS on hardware below minimum requirements, don't expect anything good
Well I remember it running much faster.
(Windows 7 btw)
I think its still below spec
Yeah sure it is.
09:41
I've run 7 on 1 gig. not a happy camper
Bob
Bob
@slhck that looks like 8 to me..
also, 7 has the same min RAM reqs
@Bob Are you referring to the screenshot? That wasn't mine. Just read about it and thought… wtf, they still do that?
Bob
Bob
ah.
that makes a lot more sense all of a sudden :P
@JourneymanGeek haven't had less than 2 GB since the P4 days here
RAM is cheap
@JourneymanGeek System Boot Time: 28/03/2013, 2:23:18 AM
yea... about that shutting down.... :P
@Bob: in a perfect world, my only 24/7 systems will be my raspi and my router ;p
Bob
Bob
09:44
wait. why was it booted at 2:30 AM? O.O
lol
@Bob: I think my dad hit 8 months on XP by accident
Bob
Bob
accident?!
I already have half a dozen things popping up "please restart now" warnings every day...
I have NO clue how he did it!
I'm usually a bit anal retentive about updates
Bob
Bob
@slhck hm... weird
isn't it normally around the cc wiki logo?
Bob
Bob
09:48
argh! that faded text!
@slhck thanks
couldn't see it for some reason :P
must be going blind
or maybe I need a better monitor angle/height.. hm..
Well it is a little bright.
10:21
people are wierd.
10:41
@JourneymanGeek I never said it was
@Bob Downloading...
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg which one? :P
@Bob The big one :D 20
Bob
Bob
if you find that one good (and have bandwidth to spare), would you mind taking a look at the 25 too? just want to know if that's 'good enough'
Bob
Bob
I'm guessing the download speeds are a little disappointing, though
should've put it on the Gbit server
10:47
Well, the first problem with those recording would be that they're not 4:3 :P
Bob
Bob
D:
:P
I only have 1080 pixels of vertical res
does anyone even have a 4:3 any more? ;p
It doesn't look at smooth as I would have imagined it to be. But my computer is also under heavy load right now :P
@JourneymanGeek 1600x1200 fits perfectly on my screen... in a window
(actually I have a NEARLY functional 4:3 somewhere. I just need to fix the next thing that broke)
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg my video?
10:56
@Bob Yeah. I'll have to check it out again when I'm done encoding and writing to the drive where my downloads are :P
Bob
Bob
lol
11:22
New names, new icons!
11:45
My lossless encoding came out with 7.13 GB
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg slightly bigger than my FRAPS capture
which should have been lossless
oh wait
the default mode is not lossless
o.O
Well, the capture from which I encoded that was 41 GB
Full speed ahead!!!
Which, in this case, means like 4fps :D
Bob
Bob
@slhck apparently film is better than animation for gameplay video
which might be a closer fit for @OliverSalzburg's demo
@OliverSalzburg I was getting 5.1 fps when encoding with a CRF of 10
actually, with any settings
@Bob I specifically picked the "veryslow" preset
I'm down to 3 fps now
Bob
Bob
12:00
@OliverSalzburg ah, I was using "slow"
And this is, as seen above, with -threads 8
Bob
Bob
didn't set threads here
What CPU do you have?
Bob
Bob
same as yours :P
Bob
Bob
12:01
well
the non-K one
That makes for easy comparison then :D
Bob
Bob
I was considering throwing it into MediaEspresso for some CUDA encoding
I'm rather sad I can't use QuickSync
..
Bob
Bob
my desktop is a p67 and my laptop has a too-new version of the Intel drivers
thats one of those things I have never gotten
(the lack of quicksync the MOMENT you don't have a monitor plugged into the integrated graphics out)
Bob
Bob
12:03
@JourneymanGeek hm?
lol
@JourneymanGeek well, the p67 is missing supporting hardware on the MB
Bob
Bob
should've gone for the z68
;p
hmm
thats SB, or core gen 1?
Bob
Bob
there is no MB graphics on the p67
at all
@JourneymanGeek SB
(sorry, too tired to even pretend to brain today ;p)
Bob
Bob
12:05
lol
my SIL has been throwing up the last 3 days, so they had to put her in a hospital bed, and give her fluids. My dad insisted I go with my brother for that (for no apparent reason). I got home at 3, and had to walk the dog at 4... the full half hour walk. Then various random crap needed to be done.
Bob
Bob
o.O
hope she gets well soon
also, since when do dogs walk dogs?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic do you guys pay to receive calls?
dog walking is a process ;p

You can ask the team to change it back...
@Bob Actually I just changed it twice and succeeded. No any message appeared.

Q: Add warning when changing display name

James McNellisThe policy on changing one's display name was changed back on February 4: only one display name change is allowed every 30 days However, there is no warning whatsoever when actually changing one's display name. Thus, it came as quite a bit of a shock to me when I found out today that I mig...

looks like you can copy the name from other sites
so as long as it's not a SE-wide change
@Bob I did apply change twice to entire SE.

A: Name Change Limiting can be Broken

Grace NoteI actually reported this in a question way back when I first joined. It's partly why I was stuck with the name "ccornet" for so long back then (it was supposed to be ccomet), and it's also how I changed my name to "Grace Note" two days ago but can change it back as early as July 11th. It was esta...

@Boris_yo perhaps they removed that limitation
or added a delay before it set in

A: Can we restrict the ability of users to keep changing their names?

Jeff AtwoodNew rules: only one display name change is allowed every 30 days user accounts less than 2 days old may change their displayname at will there is a 15 minute grace period after each change during which you may change your displayname at will

> there is a 15 minute grace period after each change during which you may change your displayname at will
@Boris_yo you dodged a bullet there
I'd seriously recommend changing it back before it becomes permanent
@Bob But then after 15 minutes it takes 30 days to change again?
Bob
Bob
yes
@Bob Permanent or 30 days?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo 30 days is effectively permanent at this point
I changed my username to "The Randomizer" however I have some questions here and there asked by my previous username. Don't know if I should stay Boris_yo or not.
Bob
Bob
12:26
I'd personally prefer people didn't change their names :P
it makes things confusing
but it's really your choice
just be warned that you have maybe 5 mins max before it becomes permanent
@Bob How would my asked questions link to my new username profile? SE will do automatic redirect?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo links will be changed
but @references in comments won't be
also, you have maybe one ot two minutes left
I am staying by old username. But picture I can change when I want it seems.

@Bob My CRF20 encode completed
Uploading it right now for comparison
481 MB
@OliverSalzburg I wanted to surprise him by cloning him.
13:25
@Bob captured with RGB mode (slower and more fidelity), and 60 FPS instead of 30
@Bob no
@OliverSalzburg That's Matroshka container?
@Boris_yo I guess so
If you mux into .mp4 and then run qt-faststart on it, it should be streamable as well.
Or encode in ffmpeg with the -movflags faststart option.
@slhck Damn, if only I had known earlier! :D
13:35
@OliverSalzburg You can remux it as well later on
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c copy -map 0 output.mp4
@slhck Are you video producer?
@Boris_yo No, not really.
Basically, I research video quality.
@slhck What's qt-faststart and how would I use it?
@slhck

That's your hobby or is it your job?
Do you have Chrome in your smartphone?
@OliverSalzburg Every MP4 file contains info about its contents. Usually it's placed at the end of the file after the encode, but if you want to stream it you should put the info at the start of the file, obviously. That's what qt-faststart does.
Otherwise a player would need to download the whole file to get the info about the contained streams etc.
13:38
@slhck I see
@Boris_yo That used to be my job until university ran out of project money. So now I'm a part time software engineer. And yes, I have Chrome on iOS.
@slhck That's what I was curious about. Some files streamed right away but some surprisingly require to be downloaded before played back.
@OliverSalzburg There are various implementations. One comes with the FFmpeg source code and can be compiled, but there's also the Python port you found.
@slhck How do you like it so far in terms of stability and bugs? I have one on tablet and it seems to be slow.
13:41
@Boris_yo Yeah. That's a very simple requirement people often forget when setting up streaming video.
@Boris_yo It's okay. Crashes in Super User chat for me a little more often than I'd like it to, but it's great compared to the iOS stock browser.
@slhck Do you also possess the wisdom of producing video films?
@Boris_yo Haha. Well, I did produce one or the other video, yeah. Including filming and digital effects, etc.
@slhck It is weird but stock browser on Android supports more formats than Chrome. Talking about flash and other streaming plugins Chrome is incapable of playing back.
One I can show is in German… so only @OliverSalzburg's going to understand the joke.
@slhck What video editing software you used? Adobe Elements or After Effects?
13:43
grrr so many tabs open, why do i have to look at SO everytime :/
@slhck Wait can't you translate video with Google Translate? Oh we are not in 2033 yet, okay then. Must have been confused today.
@Boris_yo Premiere Pro and After Effects in combination. Premiere for cutting and After Effects for motion tracking and keyframe animation, etc.
@HackToHell You cannot close tabs?
I will close it and the second after I close it, I will have to see it again :/
@slhck Do you have licenses for these or University allowed you to use theirs? I think these programs are top notch in industry.
@HackToHell That's spyware or redundant popup.
great tool :)
@Boris_yo o0
@HackToHell Well I am not coder or scripter. Basic HTML is all I know and yet B-
@Boris_yo University licenses are cheap. If I were a freelancer it'd be a little harder to use these programs. Although I'm looking forward to Adobe's Creative Cloud for that.
@slhck Cloud hmmm... Only tells me you will need a heck of upload rate for that.
13:48
@Boris_yo neither am I, that's why I have soo many tabs open, I have forgotten a lot of stuff in a year
@Boris_yo Then you're misunderstanding what Creative Cloud does ;)
@HackToHell I also have many tabs open because I have too much on my mind. I find much stuff but don't have time or willingness to finish it as I find it so I put it off.
@slhck Haven't you heard about Camtasia?
@Boris_yo Well yes, I have. I've already used it as well.
Did a screencast for a project with it: maphub.github.io
@slhck Do you have license for it?
@Boris_yo Nope. Just used the 30 day evaluation version.
13:51
@slhck And you like it so far?
Since you ppl are talking about screencasting software, do you know any FOSS one that can record games ?
@HackToHell Like FRAPS?
yes
It works, I want a FOSS one :P
@HackToHell Why you don't like FRAPS?
@HackToHell What is FOSS?
It has a 30 second limit -_-
@Boris_yo Free and Opeb Source ?
13:52
@Boris_yo Yeah. Great program. Very intuitive and fast to work with. Would definitely buy it if I did more screencasts.
@HackToHell Because it is not free software? Yep thought so...
LOL ! i thought @Boris_yo was @JourneymanGeek
I was wondering how come jou didn't know what FOSS was :D :D
Yeah, and I thought @JourneymanGeek was very talkative today.
@HackToHell Hahahha! You don't do tab before you @?
@slhck I happened to know license giveaway for Camtasia.
@Boris_yo I used the reply to your messages so all i saw was a number :D
13:58
I wanted to steal Journeyman Geek's identity.
And you fooled me for a while :D
