00:04
umm. your demo program works fine on my 7 machine :o
how long of a recording do you want? @OliverSalzburg
@tapped-out It ends at some point
okay, i'll let it run to completion
So, I would want the whole thing
is 1920x1080 an acceptable resolution or should i try to find something more square?
@tapped-out It's designed for 1600:1200
00:12
swaps monitors
So, that would be optimal
@OliverSalzburg: I have such a system, but its still chkdisking ;p
It's like 2:15 here
I should have went sleeping a long time ago
Well
That's what I thought 6 hours ago
And I didn't even need All Access to get it WooHooooooo
And np hTunes either WooooHeeooooJeeeee
any ideas on how long it should run?
@tapped-out 7mins max There is a reference video
00:22
oh that's right
it's running quite nicely now on my 7 x64 machine, should be done in a couple of minutes
awesome!
This is really intensely awesome news for me
hehe glad to help out a fellow Super User
00:29
404 :P
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg ok, 1280x1024 is probably useless :P
@Bob It's a start
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Looks like @tapped-out has it covered anyway :P
Hopefully
I need to see le video!!!
something tells me i need to convert that :P
i'm gonna have to work on this tomorrow @OliverSalzburg
that file is sooooo huge that everything crashes on it
VLC, handbrake, Freemake
I'll have to sleep as well
00:52
sorry about that
but at least it works, so that's something!
plus, that computer is probably fast enough to do Fraps, so i'll get something cooked up
Bob
Bob
@tapped-out yea, you might want a little bit of compression
it may interest you to know that AVI files are actually supposed to have a 4 GB limit
probably why things crash
that would explain it
Bob
Bob
@tapped-out fraps doesn't compress. last time I tried it, it actually started choking the framerate of the recorded program some way in, when it hit 4 GB
hmm. since the AVI is just raw frames (no compression) i wonder if there's any way to split it into 4 gig chunks
Bob
Bob
I think @slhck was our resident ffmpeg expert :P
00:59
It's 3:00
I need to enter sleep time
@OliverSalzburg 'night
01:42
soulhack is more like ffmpeghack :P
although i wonder if he's partial to libav
i just need to find some way to compress this massively huge file
yawns tomorrow's adventure :P
02:13
What's really the difference between a Core i5 and a Core i7?
I know what binning is. What's the technical difference?
what do you mean? like feature wise?
i5s don't have hyperthreading, for example
and (check me) generally aren't as highly clocked
Feature wise. Why should one get an i7 over an i5? And thanks. Intel product numbering is confusing as hell.
I wish this was an AMD motherboard. So much easier to research.
I see, yeah, i7 has HT, i5 does not
if i recall correctly i7 has extra cache?
02:19
@BenRichards also might not have virtualization, unlocked clock, (not sure)
@tapped-out I think i5 also has an L3
@soandos Ok. This is for my brother. Don't have to go all out.
anyone have a resume building type thingy they like?
And seriously, there's no pattern to this: intel.com/content/www/us/en/processor-comparison/…
might not be as large (i7 has a 6MB L3)
i5 also has switchable graphics (not all i7s have this if I recall correctly)
I have a motherboard I got free at PAX. I want to match the CPU accordingly.
Aha
Intel DH61ZE desktop board, btw.
02:20
@soandos think you mean integrated
I used the Google docs templates
@tapped-out, no, I mean switchable
you can have both integrated and and a discrete card, and lack the ability to swap between them
I like how they all say "smart performance"
This is a problem for a lot of mac I think (they have an i5, but can't switch under bootcamp)
02:21
Ooh
@benrichards i7 is faster k is unlocked
@soandos Aha
@JourneymanGeek I don't care about overclocking with this build
Ok
I think i'll probably do an i5. At least, if the pricing makes sense.
@JourneymanGeek I forget, did you get that job you were going for? (Not related to my resume question ;P just reminded me)
So 'spensive! :P
AMD doesn't support Intel sockets anymore, right?
hehe
I wonder if Intel makes it so confusing so people will tend to give up and buy the more expensive processor because it'll probably be better and have what you want.
:P
What a review!
> This CPU is everything you need and more yes this isn't the i7 but unless you are an extreme programmer you wont notice the difference.
I wonder if I'm an "extreme programmer"? Hmm :P
You know Emacs really taxes my CPU. :P
snickers
though i bet by "extreme programmer" he meant Linux kernel dev
or better yet, Firefox dev
Since I'm using my old case and the motherboard was free, should I? Hmmm...
This is for my brother, btw :)
Or, actually, maybe I'll get a new case, one that's not so big.
Yeah, might splurge. We'll see how it prices out.
02:34
SSD > case
i really noticed the difference when i added one
Yeah
My tablet has one. Love it.
Chrome loads almost instantly
it's fantastic
It always loaded almost instantly though :P
it took a few seconds when i had an HDD
though one wonders if that was a misconfiguration of something
02:40
@tanner: they phone interviewed me, and asked me to get back to them shortly before I graduate
@benrichards practically a core i5 is enough
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I'm getting that.
Anyone know when the Haswell chips are going to be in machines?
Dang. The hardest thing is speccing the PSU. What kind of wattage should I go for with this? Core i5 3550. It's 77W
you just sticking with integrated graphics?
May give him one of my MSI Radeon HD 6970 Lightning cards.
02:44
@BenRichards I think for most builds you'll want ~500W ish
ah, that's a no
I do plan on upgrading my own cards.
It might not be right away though.
@soandos Good to know.
chem final tomorrow \o/ 'night Super Users
@BenRichards can you wait until haswell comes out?
(~month or so)
02:52
@soandos Maybe, why?
that will drive down prices on ivy bridge
Aha, cool.
or you can get the haswell chips
whichever you want
Driving down prices is a good thing :)
02:52
I can let it sit in my cart for a while.
I have Patriot ram. It serves me well. I'll get more!
whats so special about it?
I don't know. It works? :P
you've have non-working ram?
I haven't had issues with crap ram, anyway :P
No. But it works. So I'll buy again. :P
how much is it?
02:54
$40
Haswell is to be released June 4.
That's like 2 weeks. I can wait.
2x4GB ram sticks, 550W PSU, 500GB SSD, & Core i5-3550 currently prices to $789.95.
I supply a motherboard, graphics card and case, and that might work.
Good deal?
3550 is sandy bridge, isn't it?
er nvm, brainfart
Yeah, I don't know. :P
naw, its IB
you can put a SB processor in a IB board tho
aha
500GB is my bare minimum for drive capacity, these days.
1 TB is preferred.
03:01
I have to be very conscious about what I put on my tablet, with only 128 GB :P
I'm getting a 3-4 tb drive when I have the cash
my 1tb drive is acting up :/
could be a while, still waiting on the headphone shop
calling em next week to see what the hell is going on
then if they can't bring it in for me, order online like I shoulda in the first place
especially since they sell direct now
03:02
:P
but noooo... I wanted to actually support local retailers.
o0
Oh of course! Removable media!
totally unrelated
o0
your tablet DOES have an micro SD card right? ;p
(but no USB OTG)
which is frigging awesome on mine ;p
Hmm? I have an SD card reader/Sony thingamajig reader and 2xUSB3.0
ahhh
Oh, THAT sorta tablet
not the nerfed sort running a semi cut down, hobbled OS :p
OH
03:06
:P
OH
another thing
core i7s are quad core, core i5s are dual core. Both are hyperthreaded.
KNEW I was forgetting something
Naw, it looked on the Intel site that it said i7 were hyperthreaded, most i5s were not.
Gonna go, see ya!

2 hours later…
Bob
Bob
05:18
@JourneymanGeek I thought there were a few i5s with quad?
05:48
not as far as I recall
might be wrong tho

4 hours later…
10:03
i5's are quad core
I don't think there even are i5's that are dual core
Potentially stupid question: Could a failing/underpowered power supply cause the computer to run slow?
The fan in the power supply in this machine is making noises like it's constantly struggling or about to fail. It's got worse recently so I'm thinking I'll have to replace it sooner rather than later.
how long is it since you've cleaned it? :b
define slow?
Coincidentally the machine has started having occasional problems booting - it gets stuck at the "Starting Windows" screen. A reboot works.
@Leathe: so wierd. I could have sworn they were hyperthreaded dual cores
10:07
doesn't sound like a PSU problem
@ChrisF: the booting issue - check event viewer
@JourneymanGeek Takes ages to boot mainly. Once it's running apps (apart from Chrome) seem to work fine.
@ChrisF: sounds like my old XP install
(which I never worked out what was wrong, took 10-15 minutes to boot, than ran normally)
@JourneymanGeek i5s aren't hyperthreaded :I just one thread per core
I think i3's might be hyperthreaded tho
@Leathe: i5s are TOTALLY hyperthreaded
10:09
@JourneymanGeek Done that, I can't see anything. There were some apparent disk errors a few weeks ago, but I checked the cables etc and that seems to have disappeared.
as I understood it, core i3 is dual core, no HT, core I5 is dual core HT
@Leathe That was my thinking, but the timing seemed too coincidental.
ok, i5s DO seem to be quad core, hyperthreaded
my bad
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek cough
i5-750
@Leathe Fairly recently
10:11
some i5's have hyperthreading yeah
@Bob: looks like I misremembered
>_>
Bob
Bob
actually, just about all the desktop ones
OH
that would explain it
headesks
Bob
Bob
quad core mobile (Intel) processors are rare
my laptop is a SB core i5
Bob
Bob
10:12
in fact, they're typically the QM models
I think they might be i7 only, too
(I'm on an i7-3632QM)
@tapped-out Any luck with the recording?
Might go for the new PSU anyway. The noise is somewhat annoying and the current one is 400W which doesn't have that much overhead for the 3 hard drives and a nVidia GT 250 graphics card I have installed. If the "slowness" persists it might be time for a reinstall of Windows.
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg oh yea, I was going to try, wasn't I?
what was that link?
Bob
Bob
1920x1080 alright?
that's the biggest monitor I have :P
10:14
Well, that's the download link
@Bob It was designed for 4:3, so 1600x1200 would be great
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg I have a 1280x1024 and a 1920x1080. and a 1366x768 laptop
that's all :P
Well, see if it runs first. We'll figure out the rest later :D
Maybe it can be captured windowed in a 4:3 resolution. I don't think it handles other aspect ratios well
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg AA? Quality?
Ref Renderer?
Why is Vsync greyed out?
o.O
@Bob On max
Bob
Bob
I'll be capturing with Snagit's video recorder
10:19
@Bob Disable
Bob
Bob
"Insane"
I like the sound of that :P
@Bob Couldn't get it to work with the rendering pipeline in that engine iteration :(
Urgh.... computer BSOD when I woke it up. Skype forgot everything again :P
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg I see weird shapes :P
whoops
So did WhatPulse. What are these applications doing? Loading their cache from disk into RAM and then they delete the cache from disk or what?
Bob
Bob
it doesn't seem to handle being alt tabbed out well
10:22
@Bob I'd say that's good! :D
@Bob It doesn't, at all ;D
Bob
Bob
wait a sec
closing some programs, shifting chat to the secondary monitor...
o.O
I have two dates on an unsaved notepad window
that's been there for at least a month
no idea what they're for anymore :P
are they in hour:minute day:month:year sort of format?
Bob
Bob
..
damn it
hm?
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg it also does not like losing focus
just tried clicking in chat on the other monitor D:
10:29
@Bob It likes being the center of focus ;D
Bob
Bob
oh damn
snagit completely failed to capture it, too
Try kkrunchy perhaps
That's usually the go-to tool to capture stuff like this
Then again... I don't know if it'll work because of the config dialog
Bob
Bob
whoops
needed to update snagit
@ChrisF: the reinstall is the first thing I'd try ;p
Bob
Bob
O.O
"The file 'UNIDRV.DLL' on Windows Installation Disc is needed."
Haven't seen THAT kind of popup in.. who knows how long
10:46
quite a few reoccuring questions about multiboot have popped up
not recently, but during these past few days
Bob
Bob
well, it captures the audio
no video yet
if I get the time, I might write that guide over the weekend myself o.o
Bob
Bob
screw it
I think I have a copy of hypercam somewhere
