lady tardar the grumpy ;p thepaperwall.com/…
@BenRichards: the same sellers who sell the 27 inchers have 24 inchers ;p
Anyone have any practice with ghostscript?

2 hours later…
02:36
ugh, InstallShield Limited Edition == InstallShield Useless Edition
03:01
@allquixotic what are you trying to do with it?
@soandos just make an installer for a 64-bit Windows Service to bring some sanity and ease of management to an in-house server process
sanity is usually too much to ask for
I ended up doing it in InnoSetup but I had to write some Pascal code and customize an install script, so it was more effort than a point and click, but got the features I needed which Flexera's crapware was missing
or so ive seen from every IT department
i never got the hang of scripting GUI stuff
03:10
creeeeeepy
lol
@JourneymanGeek I seem to be using my Surface Pro during the week and my desktop during the weekends :P hmmmm
I guess the Surface Pro is more convenient (way, way faster to turn on and get running) and I'm too tired to do gaming anyway
electricity is too cheap in the US, so I don't think I'll ever repay the cost of the Surface Pro by running it instead of my desktop (max. 48W vs. max. 1000W, and the 'Pro rarely uses the full 48W)
I found that with my tablet
pretty sure my desktop idles around 150W because the fans, lights, idle GPU, and large plasma screen drain a good amount of juice (and give off a lot of heat, which then has to be cooled down by the AC)
probably closer to 200W once you consider the cost of cooling the air that it heats up
03:14
plasma screen? o0
interesting choice of display
@JourneymanGeek yeah, plasma TV
we have one as our main TV
nevermind
it's not a plasma screen, I thought it was
it's LED
looks GLORIOUS, but low res (800x600!!!!!) and hot as hades
I knew it wasn't LCD
03:16
lol
LED is LCD
different backlight (and there's variations there)
o.o
it is?
it is!
there's true LED displays
OLED/AMOLED is quite different from LCD though, right?
but they're the sorta thing you'd use in a football stadium of any religious preference
OLED is different
but I can't think of anyone who uses them on TV sized screens
didn't know my primary display was an IPS LCD... it's not that good of a display... my Surface Pro's display is much clearer, the colors are more accurate, and it has a better response
03:18
lol
just smaller, but for the display that it is, it's worlds better
I need to get it calibrated
IPS dosen't have great response
IIRC
(then again, I have a 20 inch asus I bought primarily cause of cheapness)
Anandtech said you can vastly improve the color accuracy of your Surface Pro's display by getting it software calibrated by the correct equipment
there's even an option in Windows itself to begin the calibration, but you need some kind of hardware
screens are one thing I haven't gone snobby over...
yet...
like the colourhug?
apparently the hardware is much more capable of true color accuracy than the factory settings would suggest
03:20
hmm, maybe not, does the pro dualboot?
they compared the default Surface Pro color accuracy to the "ideal" and it was just about average compared to other tablets
reasonably priced apparently, but boots off a livecd
but when you tune it / calibrate it, it's the best in the class
whoa
that device looks awesome
I want one ;p
not sure if its significantly cheaper than commercial versions tho
@JourneymanGeek their FAQ indicates it's better/cheaper than the commercial versions
03:29
@allquixotic: and upgradable
XD
good to know your options in any case
I'll probably get one soon
although Microsoft should really calibrate their display in the factory >_<
bedtime, g'night :) o/
04:00
@JourneymanGeek any chance you know somewhere that I can buy a "customized" laptop online?
(picking RAM amount, HDD, etc)
most companies will let you do thatr
In the range I am looking at (8+GB RAM, gen3 i7, 7200rpm HDD) they all come with things I don't want
MIGHT be cheaper to buy a base model and upgrade yourself tho
like multiple graphics cards
and how useful is it to get a 7200 rpm over a 5400?
@soandos real useful, speeds increase 30pc iirc
04:06
Thats what I thought. They are hard to find in laptops (stock anyways)
I'm overclocking my cpu. Well, trying. :P
AMD's Auto-Tune in the CPU Overdrive program is running.
I'm living dangerously. :P
nice. how are you keeping the the temp down?
It's air-cooled. Cooler Master V8.
@BenRichards Overdrive does not work for me :(
@HackToHell Last time I tried, my computer BSOD'd on me after a while. It's actually getting to the point where it did last.
Hopefully it won't this time.
04:10
It think my CPU is not supported, it does not work on my GPU too
Ah. I have a black edition. So, unlocked multiplier :)
MSI Afterburner to OC GPU and Mobo settings to OC CPU
@BenRichards a phenom ?
I tried overclocking my GPUs but I couldn't get a stable overclock at all. But then again that was manual.
@HackToHell Yeah. Phenom II 955 x4 Black Edition.
Stock clock rate is 3.3 GHz.
Well, that's not stable.
So, now what? :P
Ah there we go. I see it rebooting.
I guess it can tell when it's unstable or something.
I was wondering if it'd just hang or if it'd automatically reboot, like it claims. :P
04:14
Stabilizing my OCd CPU tool a long time :P
Apparently it knows what it's talking about!
Wow! When it reboots, it says "autotune is done! look at the CPU Overdrive page to see the test results"
Smart program.
o0
/me opens up catalyst
But I see no results.
Not sure what I missed.
I'll try again?
04:35
o0
04:53
@HackToHell you mean there is a secure version of java?
05:21
lol
@soandos: sure. Its the one you don't havbe installed
@JourneymanGeek lol
wh00t you can buy humblebundle with bitcoins !

amusingly he SHOULD have used the code block option, his code has been mangled
06:33
Does anyone know anyplace where one can download compressed steam backups for games ?
07:30
woot woot... now public knowledge and I can share with friends...

All the long nights are worth it! It is now public knowledge and I can now happily share and say that Hyperoptic has secured £50 Million investment from Soros/Quantum Investments :)

@WilliamHilsum congrats
@WilliamHilsum cool !
@WilliamHilsum Nice! So...when you coming to the South West? :P
Thanks all!
@tombull89 go to hyperoptic.com and click the register interest button... We go where there is demand for us!
07:37
@WilliamHilsum If you decide to go global come to India ! :D
@HackToHell No plans... sorry :(
So is this the UK equvilent of Google Fiber? Fair-priced fast internet?
@tombull89 Well, we were starting before them! Google's service is the US equivilent of what we are doing! :)
07:59
@WilliamHilsum WTF UK only? ;D
lol
@OliverSalzburg: eheh.
germany gets no love!
I want moar upload! :(
I moved all my photos from Google+ to Drive yesterday, took forever
@OliverSalzburg Next time, feel free to bring your laptop to my office! :)
And sorry :( UK Only!
@WilliamHilsum :D
I wonder if any ISP is multinational... excluding common owners... e.g. can you share an infrastructure cross country? I think there are just too many legal obstacles... why big players just have loads of different ISPs :(
08:10
@WilliamHilsum Interesting
T-mobile is multinational. If you want to call them an ISP
@OliverSalzburg Well, again... I don't think they are... T-Mobile/Deutsche Telekom just buy out ISPs/networks across the country...
same as Telefonica/O2
pretty much any country is independent...
I just guess the way countries are set up, it isn't that easy to share core infrastructure :/ ... I don't see why you couldn't across Europe with enough planning...
Okay, I'm seriously getting fed up with these stupid Google storage services. Someone please explain to me where I'm going wrong or what I should use instead. So I used to auto-upload to Google+ at full size, but it has become nearly impossible to grab a single photo at full size and download it.
Also, I was unable to properly sync data through Picasa. It would simply hang and never complete. So I was unable to get the files back to my computer. Which is terribly annoying
So I moved it all to Drive, because you can just as easily access files in Drive from Google+, so why put them on Google+ anyway? But in Drive, it's impossible to get a direct link to an image wtf
08:27
Trying out FolderSync now...
08:38
Oh wtf... no SSO support for Google services, full app doesn't replace lite version or import the configuration... O__O
Argh, and once you switch to full app you have to re-setup the accounts
@WilliamHilsum: most own subsidiaries
for example singtel owns one of the aussie ISPs whose name I forget
optus?
yeah, that
Bob
Bob
09:13
Huh.
Seems like I missed a bunch of drama last night.
@JourneymanGeek Well, they're better than Vodafone. I'll give them that.
@KitFox Hi there!
@Bob: Everyone says it like its a BAD thing ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Says what?
missing drama ;p
Bob
Bob
@tombull89 Let me know if he ever appears there. I'll need some popcorn, too.
@ddacot Uhm... maybe?
I mean, I can't quite remember how often you should recharge a Li-ion laptop battery in long term storage.
But that's the general process, AFAIK.
XD
@Bob: eheh. I let tom know cause he was complaining he missed the drama the LAST time this happened
Bob
Bob
09:19
@JourneymanGeek I only caught it because I was pinged.
Still not entirely sure why.
lol
I'm not sure why i got pinged
since I was actually telling him to post other answers to avoid getting in trouble ;p

> These include storing payment credentials in Chrome to make it easier for consumers to checkout
NO
Why the f*** would.. that's just...
There's a reason you're prompted to enter a password for this kind of thing.
Not that many people don't save those passwords anyway, but that's hardly a new feature.
@Bob I assumed a lot of that movement is directed at the concept of being able to "pay with your phone"
Chrome has been storing CC data for quite some time
wasn't google working on a micropayment system?
checkout iirc
@JourneymanGeek Pretty sure that's what the article is (partly) about ;D
lol
read the article?
It's called Wallet by now
10:17
one moment, let me do that ;p
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Yea. Honestly, a bad idea. But people are lazy.
Still, just love how all these are apparently new features.
@Bob It's pretty crazy. Especially since Chrome offers no protection of the stored data. To my understanding, their policy is "Lock your workstation"
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Whoever said that was definitely technologically challenged.
That's just stupid.
But Wallet works pretty much like PayPal to me. They have been using it on the Android Market for quite some time
>_>
@OliverSalzburg: about the only reason I use paypal is I can bank transfer money into it ;p
Bob
Bob
10:19
That basically means that anyone with fifteen minutes with your computer (and don't mention those shady repair shops) have access to all your financial data.
(stupid lack of usable debit card)
@Bob: I am my shady repair shop
@Bob Well, everything basically. As this also applies to stored passwords
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek The other shady :P
least when I forget to turn on the light ;p
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg I am guilty of that for some sites :P
10:22
But, I (being a super user and all that ;P) don't really have a problem with this. Like, if your machine is not secure, your data isn't either.
Having a master password on your browser is nice, but if someone can pull an unencrypted image of your hard drive in a repair shop, he can probably break the password at some point
Also stuff like this:
The problem is any malware can get your passwords. That's why we need master passwords. — DmitryR Dec 21 '12 at 11:18
As if that would stop the malware from simply reading the unencrypted data out of memory once it's unlocked
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg I think I answered something along those lines before :P
ah
here it is
13
A: How safe is the password manager in browsers?

Bob If you have malware on your computer, no passwords entered or stored on it can be considered truly safe. Even encrypted passwords such as KeyPass databases, as soon as you enter the details required to decrypt it the attacker can retrieve your passwords. Browsers typically do not pay very much a...

Nice answer
@Bob needs xkcd
Bob
Bob
thanks :P
@HackToHell which one?
11:07
@Bob the one that says that your computer is the key to everything
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell Link?
@HackToHell Yes, I know that, that's pretty much exactly what my answer used as an example...
@Bob uhm I forgot the title ... :(
@Bob whoops didn't read fully
that one?
lol
Oh, that one makes more sense, yeah :D
11:12
I am guilty of leaving at least one computer all the time
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek :D
kk.org/cooltools/archives/11821 somehow tasting good to bears might be a BAD thing to me
My whole account security setup relies solely on 3 physical devices. If they were all to burn in a fire at the same time, I would never be able to access anything ever again
"Oh, my house didn't catch fire. It was chewed on by bears tho"
lol
@OliverSalzburg: in my case everything comes back to a small piece of pink plastic
(my ID card ;p)
Sounds interesting. I don't know what kind of setup that is, but I know that "being able to identify myself" would not let me get back into my security ring :D
11:15
lol
I wish I could give some sort of backup access to someone, but there is simply nobody you can trust ;P
lets say my house caught fire and my phone blows up
I'd go to the bank, explain it, show the ID and sign some stuff, and use that to draw money
then go to the phone company and do the same thing and get a new phone
and... etc etc ;p
Oh, that kind of stuff. Yeah, my bank account probably would be easy to get back into
I'm talking about the important stuff. ;D
online stuff///
4-5 passwords
all in my head
NOT getting hit by a bus proof
Bob
Bob
...
apparently laser pointers >1mW are classified as dangerous weapons here
whoops
11:17
yeah
it is in quite a few places
Bob
Bob
I think I have one sitting in a cupboard somewhere.
I only use randomly generated passwords, which I store in KeePass. KeePass is stored in Google Drive. But getting access to drive requires one of those randomly generated passwords and, of course, the Google Authenticator for two-factor auth, in case you're trying to get to it from an untrusted machine.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek probably going in the trash next time i see it :P
maybe
lol
@Bob: unless you use it, no one will know/care ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek huh
11:19
lol
they're cause of idiots who point them at aircraft
Bob
Bob
my bank visits are more 'here's my name and address. oh, you can change my phone number? GREAT!'
@JourneymanGeek yea, I know :P
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg my keepass file (stored on dropbox and two computers) requires a keyfile
which is only stored in one physical location while I'm at home
@Bob Yeah, key file is required for mine as well as password ;D
Bob
Bob
I'll have no trouble getting the database back if the house blows up (assuming I survive), but I'll probably never get the thing unencrypted again :P
11:22
I actually have backups of my key file at random locations on the internets
Thanks to the composite key, I'm not too worried about that
And, all this security is obviously just to keep my Reddit user account password safe!
@JourneymanGeek @bob yep that one :P
@OliverSalzburg bury it somewhere :D :P
And Andriod Studio is not starting -_-
@HackToHell I'm sure there's a cmd.exe process hanging around though ;D

Q: Android Studio installation on Windows 7 fails, no JDK found

Jaison BrooksI downloaded Android Studio and attempted to launch the program. This is running on Windows 7 64-bit with Java 1.7. During the installation my Java 1.7 is detected, and the rest of the installation goes through just fine. However, when attempting to launch the application from the desktop icon, ...

@Bob IntelliJ i think
It installs, does not start, no log, no error msg, nothing :/

Q: Android studio doesn't start

Luigi TiburziI just download Android Studio for Windows 7, the wizard went ok up to the end but now when I click on the shortcut or on the .exe to start the program nothing happens, no error, no new window, it's seems like it is doing nothing. Do you have any suggestion?

@HackToHell You should try running the studio.bat from the command prompt
0.1 :D
It probably prints somehting like "FAIL! Press button to continue" and that .bat process hangs around in the background forever :P
@OliverSalzburg There is not bat file .... or cmd window
11:29
@HackToHell The shortcut in the start menu points to a studio.bat does it not?
no, it points to studio.exe
@OliverSalzburg 111 upvotes for a question that basically already contains the answer?
> Please validate either ANDROID_STUDIO_JDK, or JDK_HOME or JAVA_HOME points to valid JDK installation
Heh, indeed, I guess that invokes studio.bat then...
@slhck: eh, its SO ;p
@slhck I wish I would have just posted it after I had the issue myself :P
I was left with posting a 0-upvote answer :(
After I read about it in the SO newsletter
But I would have probably posted it on SU anyway, silly me
Looks like my java version is ages old :(
@HackToHell They always are, given how quickly they need to stuff security holes
I think there are fewer updates to the jdk
11:35
So, I missed the end of the fruitful discussion yesterday. Did he leave after everyone ignored him?
banned :D
he flagged quixy
Yeah, the message where I explained him what he did wrong was also flagged and, subsequently, deleted by some other mod.
;p
funny thing was I had NO idea he had been banned
I assumed he got bored or something
Yeah. To an outsider it could even seem like he did nothing wrong, and… explaining the whole story would take forever.
No, I banned him. I didn't want to have him talking garbage after everyone left. You can't leave people like that unattended
Bob
Bob
wait. why was it deleted?
@OliverSalzburg: I'm used to IRC. You can usually tell when someone is banned. SE chat is a silent assassin
@slhck: even more wierdly, WE'RE NOT THE ONE WHO BANNED HIM ;p
and of the three people he called out, one was trying to actively help him, and one has no clue what the hell is going on.
@JourneymanGeek Heheh, yeah. I actually didn't want to mention it. That creates the possibility of someone asking him something and he can't answer. Which would make him really mad, I guess. It's part of my sadistic moderator personality disorder I have.
lol
He DID get really mad
he came in ranting ;p
11:43
He got himself banned though his actions
@JourneymanGeek Well, he was banned once for the usual self promotion thing. And then he escalated on Meta. meta.superuser.com/questions/6640/how-do-i-cancel-my-account
He had every chance to talk about his issues constructively
He didn't want to do that. End of story
I'm not sure if he thought he'd convince anyone to quit SE cause its an unfair place
@slhck: SF has a long term ban, and SE corporate talked to him
there's another post on MSO he posted IIRC
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, so after all we actually were among the nicer folks.
@slhck: thats the sad bit
11:44
Which reminds me, I still have to use up all of my daily votes for @OliverSalzburg to get the mod cross-voting ring going.
Yes, please! :D
XD
speaking of mod conspiracies, I need to check on the SF election ;p
The only truth in that statement is the fact that you can post a question/answer here in chat and probably get more feedback than usual. But there's really no guarantee that it will be positive feedback ;D And this "feature" isn't exclusive to mods either
@OliverSalzburg: there's nothing stopping someone from anonymously downvoting posts
But this concept would have probably went right over his head
@JourneymanGeek Well, "nothing" except for the reputation limit you need to reach to gain the privilege and the reputation penalty for doing so ;D
11:47
ironically negative feedback means people care enough to try to fix the cranial-posterior insertions that causes this sorta thing
XD
But being upvoted so much by fellow moderators, I obviously have enough rep to spare!
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg careful, some might miss the sarcasm :P
@OliverSalzburg: I kinda get reminded of the traffic cop, quota joke ;p
"You're pulling me over to meet a quota arn't you?"
11:50
wtf, Google Play Music instant mix is a total garbage
It always creates the same mix for me
"No maam, they took away our quota, we can pull over as many people as we want"
@OliverSalzburg: you need to add songs other than the ketchup song! ;p
I start with a dubstep mix and it switches to a hardtechno piece next and 2 or 3 pieces after that, I'm listening to rap wtf
(no, do not listen to it. Its like the goddamned most annoying earworm I have EVER HAD THE MISFORTUNE of accidentally hearing)
And I got the identical mix yesterday and downvoted a ton of stuff in the hopes that it won't be mixed in again
And today I'm listening to the same garbage
11:52
I guess I need to buy All Access, because I only have like 5000 songs to pick from!
@JourneymanGeek Now I want to listen to it even more ;P
@OliverSalzburg: Its your sanity ;p
(let me put it this way. I MENTION IT, it immediately earworms. Need to wash it out with decent music ;p)
and I actually can never remember the name of the song cause ... its that earwormy. My brain blanks it out, like its some horrible elder god from lovecroft, too horrible to comprehend
and I only earworm the good stuff usually, like the little piano riff right at the back of indica's ela ;p
12:20
Just going to "quickly" sync two Excel files to my Google Drive from my laptop... Oh, what is this? You put 16 GB of photos into your Drive yesterday? Let me grab those real quick before I upload the Excel files!
Seems like I have to revert back to USB key transfer... This is an outrage!
Bob
Bob
12:56
@OliverSalzburg That would never happen to me.
That would take me at least two days to upload, while saturating my upstream bandwidth :P
13:07
@OliverSalzburg I get a lot of upboats from people here (over a long period of time) by posting Q/As here, but they could just as easily be downboats or nothing at all... I think it's just because I'm awesome that I get upboats :D
@OliverSalzburg All Access is awesome. Use it. :D
plus, it's cheaper than Spotify and offers about the same number of songs
13:19
Hmmm. And I wondered why my MacBook wasn't charging anymore.
@slhck dead outlet? :P
@allquixotic I wouldn't use Spotify anyway
That would doit
@allquixotic I still don't live in the US and the music I like is often free anyway ;P
13:23
Ugh.I hate people who blast music in public
What is the Excel Ribbon button equivalent for Ctrl+A? I can't find anything
@OliverSalzburg oops, I keep forgetting that it isn't available in Germany :/
13:53
man we really haven't had a blog post lately on SU
What is there to write about -_- Cats?
