5:00 PM
Android devices are officially supported by it, too

Bob
saw a couple of those instore
not bad for a small portable keyboard
but far too small for me :P
the keys aren't that small
but the entire keyboard.. :S

any1 gonna use Tablet for calling facility

its small size makes it more portable than a typical keyboard though

Bob
it just felt weird. If I had to use one, I'd probably get used to it

@allquixotic keyboard is nice

Bob
5:02 PM
@allquixotic there's always those foldable ones, too
but they also feel weird :P

@LittleChild I have a Motorola Razr Maxx HD for calling; because I'm not always in range of a wifi network and really need cellular data :D

Bob
I'm biased against small keyboards after using a S10e for so long

I have a nokia n70
any1 beat me with an older cell phone ?
:D

@JourneymanGeek probably still has an analog cellphone lol
2

Bob
xD

5:03 PM
@allquixotic I also have a Nokia 1600

there's a running joke (real or imagined) that @JourneymanGeek runs around with a taped together cellphone with hand-soldered components

he must be born of Einstein
ok so Nexus it is :)
@allquixotic Thanks for the advise :)

@LittleChild NP

I must ask my relatives in middle east to get it for me.. it is way 2 cheap there
@allquixotic is there a higher version of Nexus available ?

Bob
@LittleChild careful with dodgy localised and/or locked down firmware
though I guess that doesn't apply so much to Nexus branded devices

5:09 PM
@LittleChild there's the Nexus 10, which is newer, but also much larger

@Bob tell me nore
@allquixotic nexus 7 comes with calling facility
but expensive

huh? no...

sarcastic or.. ?

5:11 PM
@LittleChild no, serious, I didn't know they offered a cellular data variant
is your local cellular provider GSM-based?

yeah it is :)
but they also offer CDMA phones :)
@allquixotic is a locked down firmware gonna be a problem ????
???
@Bob wat is a locked down firm ware ?

@LittleChild if you buy a Nexus 7 directly from Google, it won't be locked down.
if you buy it from a carrier, it may be locked
which means you can't legally move it to another carrier
laws may differ depending on where you live

6:17 PM
@allquixotic I need help ASAP
with my laptop
it wont start!!!!
@Tanner u there ?
@Luke u there ?

@LittleChild please don't ping lots of people; you're not paying us for tech support and your problem is no more important than whatever else we might be doing. sigh but OK, what seems to be the issue?

ok sorry
I am a bit freaked out atm

"freaking out" never helps, so stop.

ok so me and my uncle opened up my lpaptop
to see if the fan worked
he is an electronics engg
and now when we re assembled it, it wont start\
I mean

I'll help if I get a cut ;)

6:20 PM
the power light comes, the touch panel lights up
and then it shuts down
@allquixotic if I had the $$$, I would take it to a repair shop instead :(

@GrahamWager Congrats =D What you gonna be doing?

@LittleChild opening it up is the first mistake; you should never open a laptop unless you're a qualified professional

HDD wont spin
HE is a qualified professional

why did you open it up in the first place? "to see if the fan worked"? can't you listen to the sound of the fan?
before you opened it, was the laptop operating correctly? or did it crash a lot?

it had stopped spinning and laptop started over heating
yes, it was working correctly
no crashes

6:23 PM
if you had no crashes without the fan, then maybe you didn't need it in the first place?

Q: Specific area of the laptop heats up unusually

Little Child This is the image of the laptop that I own [HP Pavilion DV4-2126tx]. Towards the left of the laptop is a RJ-45 socket where I connect the internet cable and close to it is the graphics card, hard drive and the slot for remote control. For the past couple of days I have observed that the are...

I have no idea what you and your "qualified professional" uncle might have done to your laptop, but if you didn't put everything back in exactly the way it was when you opened it up, or if you aren't 100% sure about something, I'd check that first
it could be anything, really. something shorting the mobo. some physical damage to something that was caused accidentally while poking around inside. or maybe a loose cable.

just checked all the connectors, they are fine
a screw is left out.. could that be the problem ?
:/
@allquixotic but why wont the HDD spin ????

@LittleChild I don't know. once again a hardware problem is nearly impossible to diagnose remotely based on descriptions and words
if your uncle is so advanced, get him to fix it

ok.... here is a strange symptom
I connected the charger.. and the laptop turns on and off, on and off, on and off on its own

6:28 PM
Hey guys, thanks for the congrats messages :) new job is in ASP.NET C# MVC coding, can't wait!

@GrahamWager lucky :( I'd take any coding job over what I'm doing, but no joy so far
probably have to make a career out of the security testing experience I've got, which probably won't pay as well as coding (unless I do something top secret hehe)

@allquixotic We did not dismantle it completely.. just the screen and the keyboard connector

@allquixotic Oh really? What you doing at the moment? I'm working in retail so pretty big opportunity for me :)

@LittleChild sounds like a PSU issue, or maybe the mobo power cable not plugged in properly, or idk
@GrahamWager U.S. public sector contractor, doing a "grab bag" of things with enterprise web 2.0 information systems: functional validation ("testing"), security testing (penetration testing, best practices, etc), technical writing on formal documents, and process improvement (writing automated tools to do testing, workflow, etc)
it's all customer-facing line of business systems so that much is cool; if I find something that gets fixed, I can say I put my fingerprints on a public website with very high visibility

ok .. so whats with the strange power on and off when the adapter is plugged in
@allquixotic and again, if I offended you with the freaking out
I apologize

6:33 PM
@LittleChild I have no idea. it might be tripping a relay somewhere in the PSU or the mobo causing it to reset the power system
it sounds like the mobo firmware thinks that the system lost power (i.e. power outage) but it could also think that if a circuit breaker is being tripped

without the HDD, the system is supposed to boot to BIOS right ?

@LittleChild yes, you can have a fully working system without HDD ... at least BIOS, and then a whole operating system if you have a USB stick, PXE, or CD
computers will also tend to power themselves down automatically if the CPU is extremely overheated
since you said your CPU fan isn't working, you probably can't use the computer again until you've replaced the CPU fan

it just wont power on , and now the fan is working after cleaning the dust

the only CPUs that can operate on purely passive cooling are those specifically designed to operate that way, like embedded ARM chips. laptop and desktop Intel chips need an active cooling fan
@LittleChild the fan works? how do you know? you said it won't power on
I think what you mean is that it won't POST; if the fans are spinning then it's "powered on"

ok maybe my terminology is screwed

6:38 PM
this is why remote troubleshooting of hardware is nearly impossible

you need to be physically there looking at the PC and observing everything that happens in order from the time you plug it in until it dies
I'm surprised your uncle doesn't have any ideas

the conenctors are where they are supposed to be
RAM is in place
HDD is tucked in its place

@allquixotic doesn't sound as bad as my history! :P i'm just so lucky that they're willing to give me a chance considering my complete lack of professional experience in the industry

@GrahamWager ah, sounds like you got a good job if they hired you based on your demonstrated intellect and ability and not your qualifications
I don't have excellent qualifications but I'm earning pretty good experience that may make me employable anyway
will be 2 years full time employed (plus earlier 2 years total of part time internships) in July of this year

6:48 PM
@allquixotic Indeed, they seem like great people, there were 2 interviews so I've already met 5 different people there, and they've offered me a great starting salary considering

@allquixotic bloody ram stick wasnt seated in its place
:/

@LittleChild Yes?

@Luke i pissed him off.. I thought I wrecked my laptop

@LittleChild lol, nice job, so you fixed it?
nice job :D and you didn't piss me off

A: Is base clock speed still relevant for TurboBoost processor performance?

allquixotic"Turbo Boost" only kicks in when the CPU is under very high utilization and, depending on power profile, the CPU decides that it can do better with higher clock speed. On laptops you might not see turbo boost having as much of an effect, especially on battery power, because the software or firmwa...

@allquixotic we opened it up again to see what went wrong and we saw that the RAM was not in its proper place
and really I feel like a moron right now :/ cause I freaked out
but this behavior is acceptable from kids

7:04 PM
@LittleChild just remember that staying calm and applying your intellect is going to always yield better results than allowing your emotions to take control over you
when faced with a problem, you should think more than you feel

as for what my 'pro' uncle does, he works here: 3alitytechnica.com

oh okay

fun stuff right ? working on 3d movies and cameras ? :/
@allquixotic this was my first time opening up a laptop so ..... next time I will keep calm
Thanks for the support yo

AT&T is instructing one of my users to find a clear sticker with black writing on a black modem. ^_^ He literally said "You might have to feel around for it."
Oh nice and then we lost connection.

7:22 PM
@Tanner that's insane
apparently, residential customers aren't the only ones who get screwed by the big carriers and telcos

Anyone have experience with IPSwitch's iMail Server?

there was one of those digital marquee signs providing textual status information about the train schedules at the platform at the local commuter train station.... the ticket lady told me those things have been offline for years because Verizon won't fix their T1 line they use for them
they asked them to fix it but Verizon said something like it would be too expensive so they won't do it

Wow...
I've been on the phone with one location for three hours trying to sort out the mess AT&T made. So many messages on my phone now...
Looks like a no lunch day.

7:38 PM
@Tanner :(
this is one of the best days I've had at work in a long time... productive, feeling great, great spirits, achieving

8:18 PM
I need more rep, but I'm so sleepy. Can't anyone write an auto-answering script for me?

@RudáAlmeida if you want to be answer banned, then sure :D

Q: Segregating a multi-SSID WLAN

RobertI'm trying to upgrade my home network, which involves upgrading to gigabit and 802.11n and adding several APs. But I'd also like to update the security. Currently I have WPA(1) personal with a password because I have a few devices that can't handle WPA2 or even AES. I'd like to split the network ...

Normally I'm all over these fancy home network questions with WiFi but damn.
That's complicated. =D

@Tanner basically, to sum up that question, he built a castle on top of a swamp, it started sinking into the ground and one of the doors fell off, and now he's trying to add buttresses and crennellations to the top of it to make it more secure and stable.
anything based on wifi is like building a castle on top of a swamp. fundamentally flawed
I'm not even going to attempt to help him because I would end up ranting about how awful everything wifi is.

@allquixotic What if I use a neural network for writing an AI powered bot?

Can everyone with enough rep please help out StackOverflow and vote in their moderator election? Thanks!

8:30 PM
Sigh. Evernote was attacked. Let's reset my Evernote password and then set it again everywhere. Chrome, two Android devices, two Chrome Extensions...

@allquixotic cough vote for Sathya cough

@Tanner No! He's already a mod in like a million sites and is spread too thin as-is. Plus, if he gets elected over at SO, he'll spend less time on SU. I consider this highly unacceptable.

But then he can put the hammer down on crap migrations :P

Voting for a SU mod in an SO election is like encouraging your best friend to sleep with your GF

Besides, WebApps? C'mon...
haha
Isn't he just SU and WebApps?

8:33 PM
@Tanner he already does that here, by sending them back to SO
@Tanner I think so
but the problem with crap migrations is that they happen so fast (and so often), and often by users with low-ish rep (high enough to vote but not much else), that mods don't even have a chance to deal with them until after they've already been punted
there are a ton of users with a goodly amount of rep on SO who really have no idea about the rules or topicality politics of any SE site, let alone SuperUser

@allquixotic This makes me sad :(

when you make a system that only requires 5 votes by non-mods to punt it over to us, and you have that many clueless users who've gained rep by answering "plz send me the codes" questions, expect this kind of thing to happen

Q: Adding options to USB Flash Drive's autostart menu

DJDavid98When I insert my USB Flash Drive into my computer, I always get this little autostart popup: I was wondering, how to add elements to that list using the autorun.inf file? I know it's possible, because I've seen some programs do that before.

if you think McSoftware is bad on SU, hoho, just look at SO, and how widely it's accepted on SO (not closed, and often upvoted)
there are so many questions that mods and clueful users don't have time to sort through ALL of them and make sure they're all vetted and legitimate
there are heinously off topic, horrid questions with hackish answers with many upvotes on SO
and a lot of them get migrated here, too

I have noticed I end up on SO a lot when Googling things. Note that I Google next to no SO material...

8:39 PM
@Tanner exactly
@DJDavid98 haven't used XP in years -- years and years -- but is there a reason why the comments/answers there haven't resolved your question?

@allquixotic They simply don't work.

@DJDavid98 maybe XP patched autostart for USB devices as a security enhancement

PortableApps.com For some reason is able to add it's own shortcut there...

@DJDavid98 Looks like autorun is disabled: support.microsoft.com/kb/971029
if you've installed Windows Update KB971029 (post-SP3) then that's probably why it doesn't work

Damnit
Can you post an answer with a link to that page then?

8:47 PM
done

thanks

9:35 PM
i hate questions like this
Q: <generic question that could be a million things>
comment: is it bla?
response: nope
comment: well is it bla2?
response: nope
...
no idea why 2 people would favorite it without up/downvoting
Sounds like you need to inject a lot of sanity into management and convince them to use git everywhere, and eliminate this sneakernet of Git upstart rebels. If there's a high-up guy called Darth Subvertus who insists on using Subversion, then you need to become Luke Gitwalker and cut off his arm (after he cuts off yours). — allquixotic 20 secs ago

9:58 PM
@allquixotic IMO that is/should be NARQ...
@allquixotic I lol'd

Any WSUSOffline users online?

@OliverSalzburg I've used it once lol

When you use the installer, there's two tabs, one with options and one labeled "software"
What's supposed to be on the software tab? Mine is completely blank
I assume that where I would select to install OS updates, because it didn't install any :P
I'm really not in the mood to sign up for their horrible phpBB to report this :P

Just plugged in my flash drive with wsusoffline and froze my pc... hang on
@OliverSalzburg Screenshot? I'm a little confused about what you're talking about.
Though I reckon it's German? So that might not help either xD

@Tanner The problem happens in a German VM :P

10:14 PM
Is it after you've built the update package stuff?

Yeah, I brought it with me on a USB key
Looks the same on my host
Maybe that's normal, but then I don't understand why it didn't update
I ran the thing on the VM yesterday, got to the client, plugged the VM into the domain and it wanted to install like 40 updates right away
It seemed like it only installed runtimes and MSSE yesterday

Bob
..gotta be kidding me
the built in Trace class and TraceListeners in .NET are not guaranteed to be thread safe

Hmm... I'll build another USB stick and see what it does for me.

Bob
that's so useful

@slhck How can a one word answer not be considered "too minor"? It didn't particularly change the notion of the question in doing so.

10:25 PM
@LittleChild nokia 1210 this week ;p

10:35 PM
@OliverSalzburg Oh weird, mine doesn't even have the tab
I'm running 8.0

Grrrr... All the issues I've been having with a client is because of the ISP

@Luke Doesn't that just make your blood boil?

@Tanner Huh, I guess then there's also nothing important on it
Weird

@Luke I spent hours trying to figure out a lack of Internet connectivity at one of our locations. Was guiding the user over the phone to run ipconfig and read off stuff, only to find out it was "herp derp wrong DNS in the DHCP." Then I realized only DNS was down and my remote support was working just fine. :| All I had to do was open it up, remote in, and switch the DNS.
Never had my eye literally start twitching before.

10:55 PM
I setup an email server, and everything was working honky dorry... Then today, nothing worked
Called Telus as a last thought, and they said it was a "bum IP"

> I've also tried photorescue, which did kind of help, but, requires a key, that i tried to find on the net, but all have expired.
Really?

..."bum IP"?

@Tanner Maybe it's homeless aka unrouted :D

ah-haha

I'm serious, that's what the tech told me!

11:03 PM
Did you ask what the hell that meant?

He coulnd't tell me, he had to pass it up to a Level 2 tech!
And because the Cx INSISTED on using their server as a router... I had to walk them through on the phone how to release and renew their IP on their server
Problem as well, they are an hour on the other side of town
So doing an onsite for something that I had little control over anyways would have been stupid

11:19 PM
@Luke Was that here in Vancouver ?

I'm in PG, not Van
They live in an area called Chief Lake

11:36 PM
@Luke well when 2nd level enlightens you as to what a "bum IP" is let me know :P

Bob
> Please give me a code for this problem solving.please help help help.
-_-

link so I can downvote? :P

Bob
not SE
and why the hell don't they have post permalinks?

There seems to be a crucial button missing...
The longer I spend on Stack Exchange, the harder it is for me to get information on other Q&A or forums. Makes my head hurt to pick through that crap...

@Tanner I'd love to knwo myself... But the IP went from 216.232.238.xxx to 207.6.14.xxx

Bob
11:42 PM
@Tanner definitely. MS Answers is bad enough... when a search only turns up Yahoo Answers or Wiki Answers, I know I'm screwed.
we're being spoiled by SE :P

The ones that bug me most are forums with people asking stuff like "Why isn't blablabla working with FTP?" and somebody explains to them how to use a Windows share...
Then they start debugging their problems with Windows XP to Windows 7 shares.
And it just goes on @_@

Bob
Not An Answer

^

Bob
well, often alternatives and workarounds are good
but when people start answering as if the OP asked about an entirely different topic, rather than offering it as an alternative, that's bad

Exactly.

Bob
11:48 PM
sigh
currently patching in a thread-safe TextWriterTraceListener
yay ILSpy

I like alternatives, I especially like you're-doing-it-wrongs. But don't tell me to give up on FTP and use SMB -_- What if I'm not in a workgroup? :P

I know the feeling. Once I finally got the hang of SU, I looked back at all the years spent on forums and facepalmed myself
3

haha
@RudáAlmeida Plus you got no rep for it :P

@Tanner I don't care that much for reputation. The only scenario where it might matter is in a resume. Rep for rep's sake is... meh.
Ok, I do confess, it's pretty addictive, but ultimately useless.

I really like the privileges thing. Being able to edit a users post for them is awesome. =D

11:52 PM
@Tanner then you hit 10K and it gets even more exciting!

I got a long ways to go before that.

I care more about a topic with a high voted question or answer, where I can trust on its quality and use it as a starting point (or final word, or compilation) on something I need.
@Tanner Yeah, but in the long run it's more useful to the community than to yourself. Sure, in the longer run a great community provides more valuable answers to you, it's a win/win situation. But on a shorter, personal scale, reputation isn't much useful apart as a validation of your expertise in said area.

But who doesn't like seeing that number go up? :P

Who doesn't feel a slight high seeing that number go up?

@nhinkle As I said 5min ago, it's pretty addictive

11:56 PM
Watching my rep go up tickles chemicals in my brain I swear.

@Tanner Rep on SU/SE, followers on twitter, betting on casinos... The brain is a weird thing.

Casinos don't do jack for me.

I stopped giving a damn about twitter followers because I basically never tweet.

Handling red poker chips (or pepperonis) does make me twitch though...
