i went to a repair shop
they told me to throw it away
or that they will buy it from me for like 25 bucks
;o))))))))
that the only value is in a netebook cable
;o)
notebook
so i will keep using it on an external display then
display is very expensive right?
it's better to buy a new notebook
for 400 bucks
shared desktop seems to have suddenly stopped booting
fun fun
Yay for the elctromagnetic radiation bombardment chamber picture. I got to use it in an answer. superuser.com/questions/556631/…
looks like the desktop is not booting cause of the keyboard
WTF?
Bob
Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson you need to find a better repair shop
@EinsteinsGrandson depends. what model is it?
@JourneymanGeek :P
USB short?
try the keyboard on another machine?
try another keyboard on that machine?
try a different port?
it's old dell inspiron b130
15:12
/me peers at spapakons posts.
Bob
Bob
eh. I've got an older Inspiron laptop
it's not quite dead yet :P
Hmm, the dell B130 gets compared to one of my laptops (a lenovo 300 C100).
so it has worked for 9 years ?
;o)
for you?
Bob
Bob
Bob
though a new screen would cost a good $100
or close to that
That is cheap. Over here (europe) it is usually 2x to 3x that.
15:15
@Bob: unplugged the keyboard, then plugged it back in, works fine
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek LOL
the only option would be to buy it in US and send it to Europe
@Bob: but it wouldn't boot earlier, and it rebooted when I hit spacebar twice in the semi booted state
Intel Pentium-M 1.7 GHz. That is probably a M740 CPU
Still fast enough for modern usage.
About as fast as a P4 at 3 GHz
another thing where can i find out what kind of RAM is in it?
15:16
DDR-1
wierdest failure mode ever, but hey, this means I could start shopping for a new mechanical ;p
Bob
Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson Actually, I was searching Australian Ebay :P
i think i need additional 512 mb
no i have only 512 mb which is not that much
Hmm, I bought my C3000 with 512MB, but within a day it had 2GB .
@EinsteinsGrandson What is the service tag of the laptop ?
(The ST is a 7 digit and number serial )
15:18
H6LWNB1 is the service tag
Bob
Bob
wait.. @EinsteinsGrandson when did you buy that laptop?
bought from Dell in USA in august 2006
Computer Model
Inspiron 1300

Shipping Date
8/27/2006

Country
United States
Bob
Bob
yea.. Wikipedia lists the 1300 as a current model
O.O
15:20
Hennes, where did you find it out?
;o)
Bob
Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson service tag :P
Dual In-line Memory Module 512MB, 533, 64X64, 8K, 200
Bob
Bob
lots of information there
ok
but what is the website where i put service tag and get all the information?
support.dell.com
Or click the link I posted
I was checking it since 2006 was ayear were both DDR1 and DD2 were used
Bob
Bob
I think I have an Inspiron 6000 lying around somewhere :p
that thing still works
And both are of the type SDRAM
Bob
Bob
battery is dead though
Dual In-line Memory Module 512MB, 533, 64X64, 8K, 200
15:22
I think that the 533 is 533/2 MHz speed
So, it means I need to buy 512 mb, 533 mhz ram right?
which would make it DDR-2
Bob
Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson DDR RAM (and the screen) are quite expensive..
Since DDR1 only went up to 200MHz
and the maximum is 1024 mb , right?
15:22
That is what the manual claims.
Bob
Bob
you might actually do better with a new Atom laptop :\
I ran mine (same chipset, a 915) with 2GB without problems
so I need DDR1 or DDR2?
Bob
Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson you can use CPU-Z to check your current RAM config
15:23
Aye. Good idea.
or if I buy DDR2, it's not gonna work?
You need to right type. DDR-1 and DDR2 are not electrically compatible
having 1 memory DDR1 and the second one DDR2?
OK
Bob
Bob
@Hennes They weren't physically compatible last I checked :P
Are. 20 pins, notch, rest of pins
Bob
Bob
15:24
urgh.. possible to seriously injure yourself unplugging those 4-pin molex connectors
bloody things may as well be glued
the abundance of sharp things, especially in those older machines, don't really help when it finally comes undone :P
if i buy 400MHz , will it work?
Bob
Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson Grab CPU-Z and check your current RAM config
Bob
Bob
get matching speeds if at all possible
Crucial claims this:
Memory Type: DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 2GB
Slots: 2
Bob
Bob
15:26
rule of thumb is that RAM rated faster than the MB often works, but RAM rated slower may not work
Aye, what Bob said
Bob
Bob
actually ran into that fairly recently trying to breathe a bit of life back into a not-so-old C2D machine with DDR2 RAM
Bob
Bob
the original were 533, the spare 400 sticks I had did not work
bought a couple of new, I think they were 800
Hmm, about 30 UK pound for 2x1GBDDR-2 533, 20 pound for a new battery.
Is that worth it?
If you are going to use it for another year or 2 it might well be
If you replace it next year: less so
Bob
Bob
15:31
sigh
the it must be caused by malware! brigade is at it again... -_-
Quick! Run spybot!!!!!elevetyone!!!!
Bob
Bob
I'm all for keeping a computer clean, but running all manner of random malware 'fixes' without making any attempt at identifying the problem? potential for a lot of damage
SBSD/MBAM are safe enough, generally. But digging into the startup/services menus? especially for the rather large number of novice menus? lawd.
that's what i get from cpu-z
Bob
Bob
15:46
> Higher-speed DDR2 DIMMs are compatible with lower-speed DDR2 DIMMs although the motherboard or CPU memory controller will be bound to the limits of the lower-performance modules.
so, pretty much, go with anything PC2-4200 or higher
also known as DDR2 533 MT/s (incorrectly, MHz)
or, very rarely known as DDR2 266 MHz
actually, looksl ike your memory clock is 100 MHz
yes
that's strange
At. 100Mhz 3-3-3-9
Bob
Bob
in which case, even the lowest PC2-3200 would work
i will try everest home edition
also
Bob
Bob
but iit's easier to find a higher clocked one anyway
15:48
hey all :)
Bob
Bob
it'll just run at whatever the MB can reach
@LittleChild hi
Whats up ? :_)
Bob
Bob
@Hennes About the WiFi question, a more powerful router makes all the difference :)
just refreshing server lists in FPS games (heck, loading a Reddit page...) would crash my decade old piece of crap
$100 on a moderately good router later, no problems at all
I'd expect this to extend to the number of WiFi clients it can handle too
errr... does any1 have any idea about working of Cloud for IaaS ?
That laptop might have a celeron CPU (ark.intel.com/products/27588/… aka intel Dothan 735)
Which has a FSB of 400 MHz
While the M740 (same time pentium dothan) had a FSB of 533 MHz
15:52
@LittleChild you need to be more clear than that
with a 400 MHZ FSB it makes sense to use the RAM at the same timings. So at a multiple of 100 MHz's
@Sathya I was going over a video on when a private cloud is needed
the person said that it is needed by software companies when they are doing new projects
have transient processing requirements
Bob
Bob
@LittleChild 'private cloud'? what an oxymoron
Buy my NAS private cloud
I was wondering... how is it possible to rent more RAM ? more CPU power ?
I mean....
wont you have to buy a slot of some Terminal Services Server that hosts say.. the testing software ?
Bob
Bob
15:55
something like Amazon's EC2?
Hmm, private cloud does make sense. You need a cloud for approval from the morons higher ups. And you do not want to move sensitive data out house
and then use Thin Clients ?
Like put Selenium on private cloud and then use Thin Clients to connect to it
Bob
Bob
@Hennes right. I thought the point of 'the cloud' was that there's no need to worry about where your data is hosted
unless you care at all about security, of course
@Bob fluid instances, hosted locally
I care about not putting my data in the cloud
15:56
@Bob for small businesses, cloud is much safer than in-house solutions
@LittleChild same how you allocate more/less RAM/CPU for your VM
Not every organisation has good sysadmins
cloud doesn't abstract/replace sysadmin
Bob
Bob
@LittleChild that greatly depends on what you are doing
and what kind of 'safety'
data integrity, maybe
protection from theft? no.
@Sathya so.. was my understanding correct about Selenium in cloud ?
15:57
For several reasons:
1) Security. Please trust the pretty blue eyes of the cloud provider
2) Security. (How secure is the link to the cloud, from anywhere?)
3) What happens if things crash. Are you just customer number 1879879879879?
4) What happens if the cloud provider goes bankrupt?
Bob
Bob
when you don't have full control over every machine and networking node, inevitably security is going to suffer. maybe not all that much, but it will suffer
@LittleChild I'd say so. though such kind of environments have higher licensing fees
Bob
Bob
@Hennes the flip side is that a reliable provider might keep better backups :P
The last case is interesting, because the caretakers task is to make money and over here (s)he is allowed to break older contracts. So if selling your data to the competition yields more money than selling your data back to you ...
Bob
Bob
but that depends on how much you trust them, too
15:58
@Sathya yes, sir :)
I would want at least one more backup somewhere. Not owned by the same corp
In praxis: I want a up to date copy of all data in a local serverroom
@Hennes then Hybrid cloud could do
Aye.
15:59
it's from Everest Home Edition
Cloud can be nice. It is just not a solution for everything
Bob
Bob
@LittleChild oh, great. cloud, private cloud, hybrid cloud
am I missing something?
@Bob community cloud, public cloud
Bob
Bob
sounds like a bunch of meaningless buzzwords -_-
Celerin 735 confirmed. FSB 100 MHz
They are buzzwords for 1960 technology
Back then we called it client-server
Bob
Bob
16:01
lol
lol
Mainframes and dumb-terminals is now cloud and thin clients SHOW ME THE MONEY
Bob
Bob
...cloud and thin clients?
Some of the base ideas are similar.
Bob
Bob
aren't thin clients basically video output and keyboard/mouse input?
Yes, they are
@Bob exactly what dumb terminals are/were
Bob
Bob
16:02
I can't imagine the latency of screen sharing over the internet as is implied by cloud
well, not for day-to-day use anyway
RDP would be similar
Or X-terminals
Bob
Bob
yes. and it's horrible enough.
I actually RDP into a VDI(system) hosted in Finland & work
Hmm, I do not have problems with it
and it's been pretty smooth
16:04
in less than 10 years.... there is gonna be no Hard disks anymore
Bob
Bob
:\
But .....X-trminals on the LAN and RDP to work over 100mbit
@Sathya who do you work for ? :)
All the data we will have in Facebook
Bob
Bob
the luxury of high speed low latency connections? :P
16:04
Accesible 24/7
Give me enough bandwidth and the cloud will work
Bob
Bob
@Hennes ok, not in Australia then. maybe that NBN, but that's going to take a while
Enterprises usually lease connections and they are damn fast!
Safe your money by using cloud, then spent it for faster connections
we will have enough bandwidth even on North Pole in 10 years
16:04
@LittleChild I work at CGI, formerly Logica. Can't disclose the client
@Hennes the ISPs charge the enterprises less than what the charge the normal customers
The idea of cloud is that the data are accessible from any place on earth no matter what
Bob
Bob
@LittleChild ...you should see the cost of a 'business' connection here
@LittleChild Depends on what you lease. We paid 1536 euro per month for a 10mbit point to point link
Bob
Bob
same speed and protocol as a consumer connection. 10x the price.
16:06
At the same time I pay 22 euro per month for a 100/100mbit link with no SLA
unnderline point to point
Aye. P2P from one location to another
safe + fast
And a cheap ADSL line on both sides as emergency backup
@Sathya looks like you are a database admin ? :)
16:07
Hmm, does windows/VBS support shebangs ?
@LittleChild developer, not an admin.. though I do have rudimentary dba skills
cool... :)
Bangalore sounds fun..
insert name from PHP webpage where name is 'bobby;DROP TABLES'

Some men like to watch the world burn
It would improve most of it
16:11
I want them $170
Curse you gegl
Update gegl on my server -> fail.
gegl ??
Try fixing it... fails
graphics engine
GEGL (Generic Graphics Library) is a graph based image
processing framework.

GEGL provides infrastructure to do demand based cached
non destructive image editing on larger than RAM buffers.
Through babl it provides support for a wide range of color
models and pixel storage formats for input and output.

WWW: http://gegl.org/
Bob
Bob
@Hennes support?
After 4 hours I give up. Install a fresh VM with all the latest ports.
I build gegl,,, and run into this:
16:14
be back later :)
which support ?
Bob
Bob
you could set the default file handler to a small program that strips the first line
Ah, the VBS one
is there any software that let me watch JustinTV instead of buying Premium Account?
i think JustinTV has a limit of 1000 watcher
s
Yes. Vuze. ;-)
16:15
all the other have to buy a Premium Account
Vuze?
That's for downloading torrents
as i remember
A torrents client... off line real time watching
I don't get it
;o)
there were some softwares that worked like a proxy or something like that
anonymizing my IP address
anonymizing my IP address is not a good idea. People can no longer reach you when you do that
so that JustinTV doesn't have a clue from which country i am connected
What does it do if you connect via IP v6 ?
16:18
i will try it
Bob
Bob

A: system clock keep changing

DevidHave you changed something in the Windows Services ? Have you disabled the Service Software Licensing? You must do this through safe mode. Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer. Click the Start button, click the arrow next to the Lock button...

if i turn ipv4 off, my internet connection doesn't work
most probably ISP offer the connection on ipv4
no on ipv6
I honestly wonder how some people don't know about google these days
17:05
Google, isn't that the start page for youtube movies?
3
I use google with the Blue-E
(Both from my father, who is not very expericned with computers)
His browser was 'google'
17:41
Ah, I finally discovered how to 'upload' picture into a comment
Start an answer, insert picture. copy and paste the imgur link
where?
in here?
;O)
Try right clicking the vbs script, choose default program and then select it. Like this i.stack.imgur.com/qHblT.pngHennes 15 mins ago
Just a link to a picture.
But If you create a post, insert a picture and do not post (or mybe not finish it) then the picture is still hosted on stack.imgur

Why Your Internet Service Sucks?

18:45
How do I get Tomcat for Ubuntu ? Not available in software center
what is the difference between CL5 and CL4 in SO-DIMM, DDR2 memory for notebook?
512 mb, 533 mhx
mhz
19:04
@allquixotic are you there
19:28
Access time
I am not up to date on all the details, but the very short version is as follows:
1) CPU want to read something. It sets the address it want to read from on the address bus and sets the R/W line to READ.
2) RAM detects this and selects the right data and puts it on the databus.
3) CPU reads data from the data bus.
All nice and synchronous.
Now what happens if the CPU is much faster than the RAM, or if setting stuff takes time?
Say CPU want to write something
1) CPU sets the address on the address bus and the data on the databus WAITS (1 clock or more) until it is stable
2) Only after it is stable the CPU sets WRITE state (else writes might have gone to the wrong place)
3) RAM selects the right place to write to (terms as RAS and CAS select belong here)
4) RAM writes the contents
Somewhere around item 2) in the first example and 3) in the second example you will find RAS and CAS timings. More or less CLx
(CL for CLock cycles needed)
hardwaresecrets.com/article/Understanding-RAM-Timings/26 might state is better (and much longer)
Though that article has some errors. They say DDR400 works at 400MHz (wrong wrong wrong).
Note that the numbers are in clock cycles.
So -8 at 400 MHz takes as long as a -4 at 200 MHz
14
Q: What do the memory timings and RAM mean?

EikernOn every piece of RAM you'll see the timings like: "2-2-2-5". What is this all about? What should I buy?

20:36
Kickstarter has a leanback mode O__o
I should leave this website NOW

1 hour later…
21:48
I keep answering mdadm questions without ever having used it.
hey
anybody here?
i am copying files from an external HDD into my PC
via USB
the speed is like 3 MB per second
i need to copy around 7 GB
so, it is gonna take me 30 minutes
which is really a lot
the problem is in USB connector?
the external HDD is extremely quick... maybe even USB 3...
are the speed different when i copy into an external HDD comapring to copying from the HDD?
what is the most important thing?
uhm, depends on a lot
the HDD1 and HDD2 speeds ?
If the connector is a problem I would expect problems in the logs.
or just the USB slot in the PC?
21:56
USB(2) should be around 20-40 MB/sec
what if I have a superfast cable and superfast USB connectors?
on both sides?
Both disk and host ?
What is the speed that i should achieve, copying from 5200 hard drive into 5200 hard drive?
for a 2.5 inch drive: 40-60 MB/sec
so, in my case, the problem is USB connector right?
21:58
Depending on how modern the drive is and what you are copying
If it is tons of small files a lot less
i also found that when i copy from 1 hdd on external hdd or vice versa under Linux, it's faster than under Windows
i am copying DVD
Differece in drivers
and usually the files are big
A DVD should be mostly large (vob) files
like 500 MB or 1 GB...
now i am copying in total commadner
can i stop it , unplug the external hdd and plug it back?
