So I'm still dealing with my computer freezing up on me (asked a question about it a few months back, no resolution) and I've run into a rather strange error:
@bluejeansummer what's the OS?
Windows or Linux.
I've had it freeze on both.
then it sounds like hardware
Anyways, right now it just froze, and the readout on the motherboard says 73.
According to downloadmirror.intel.com/20560/eng/…, that's not possible.
There is no listing there for 73.
And I've already replaced the motherboard, GPU, and just today the PSU.
I've about run out of hardware to replace.
wow long pdf. what page deals with the "readout"?
06:04
(I'm posting from another device. Here's the question from a couple months back: superuser.com/questions/466496/…)
75, I think.
Search for "80h"
When you say you've replaced the motherboard. You have another motherboard identical to that one?
Yes, but that one had physical problems that I didn't notice until after the RMA period was up.
(A couple of pins were bent in the primary PCI-E slot)
and other than that it was fine?
talking the first one
I believe so.
I still have it, so I suppose I should look over it again.
yes
see if it gives the same error as your other motherboard
06:07
When I first installed it, I forgot to put the risers under it, and it made a flash/popping sound, but I never did figure out what happened.
.
hmm
I installed the new one correctly, fwiw.
well would still be strange if it gave the same exact error as your other one
and i've never heard of a motherboard popping from not using the risers.
It's freezing the same, though usually that little display shows 00.
What I think it was was that those out of place pins made contact and shorted.
That was before I put the GPU in.
i've had that happen but no pop
06:10
Yeah, I thought it was weird.
The more important thing though, is this freeze.
so both mbrds fail and with different errors.
At what stage does this error occur?
No, both of them usually say 00. Not sure why it's now saying 73, esp right after I put in a replacement power supply.
I can use the computer for a while, but certain things tend to trigger the freeze:
and prior to the freeze, what does the readout say?
Certain games trigger it when performing certain actions, such as opening some menus in Borderlands 2.
Usually 00, which I think means running normally.
that readout is for a BIOS error, a really early problem, kinds that cause beeps
06:12
I'm not usually watching it until after the freeze.
So the motherboard readout may be a red herring here.
Yeah, no beeps here.
I can also trigger it by interacting with too much flash content in a web browser.
well, perhaps modern ones don't beep i've no idea but either way, a bios issue and that readout, surely wouldn't apply to a freeze that happens as late as that.
FlashBlock increased stability like nothing else.
Yeah, I'm super confused now.
So, do both MBRDs freeze with the same triggers?
06:13
One of the comments on my earlier question said it might be a power issue.
Yes.
That's why I replaced the power supply.
What do you have plugged into the motherboard?
CPU, GPU, 1 stick of RAM, 1 SSD, and 4 HDDs in a RAID.
I've swapped out all of those components.
what if you remove the GPU completely, do you still get graphics?
(Well, I had just the SSD or just HDD as I needed an OS to test with)
No VGA port on the motherboard.
So you need the GPU in there?
06:15
Yes.
Do you have another graphics card to try?
preferably one that you know works fine in another computer at least. and preferably more than one different graphics card to try. Other than your GPU one
Yes, it's running an nvidia card, and I have run it with another ati card for a month or two.
Freezes happen with both.
How about the one stick of RAM, have you tried replacing that with a different stick?
It seemed like it froze less with the ATI card, but I don't really know for sure.
I originally had 4 sticks in there, and I've swapped it to just one, and cycled through all 4.
Nothing. memtest86+ comes up clean.
well we know it's not the RAM!
heh
06:18
Really, it seems like the only component I haven't replaced is the CPU, which I highly doubt is it.
but then it'd be the CPU in both motherboards?
I ran the computer on one non-hyperthreaded core, and it still froze
Yes, same CPU.
Does each motherboard have its own CPU?
or do you have just the one CPU that you've tried in each?
The latter.
That's a suspect then
06:20
I know, but how would flash and opening video game menus trigger that?
It makes about as much sense as the power supply being bad.
I think I have seen a computer freeze suddenly while installing windows, and it was the CPU
BSOD
Hmm, these aren't BSODs.
I can see exactly what was on the screen at the time of the freeze.
could still freeze perhaps
Says "9:47" on the clock.
from cpu
maybe. i haven't seen cpu problems much though
so i wouldn't know for sure if cpu problems always result in a bsod but I doubt they always result in a bsod
maybe they can freeze a computer too
06:21
I know, which is why I'm hesitant to replace it.
remember Windows often freezes when there's a problem
You tried a different power supply though didn't you?
Yes, but this has happened in Linux as well.
Replaced it about an hour ago.
With an identical model.
I guess you're hesitant to replace the cpu 'cos you don't have a spare one to test with?
Partially, and because I'm getting really tired of spending $200+ on replacing components that aren't even bad.
The motherboard had to be replaced, but the power supply doesn't seem bad at all.
CPU failure rates are pretty low.
I've never even overclocked this thing.
well, I once got a CPU off ebay, and it failed.
06:24
(I tried at one point, but it wouldn't even get to the BIOS without the "Back to BIOS" button on the motherboard)
bloody hell you've got a flashy motherboard!!
I guess I should at least try, as it's pretty much the only thing I have left to try.
s/try./replace./
Bah, that doesn't work here.
if you hit the up arrow you can edit
Oh, ok.
Chat system we use at work supports sed notation.
Anyways.
You could resell the cpu if it still fails with it
'cos you can assume that the cpu you bought worked
but don't buy off ebay if you're going to do that
06:26
Yeah. I'm probably going to try to resell the power supply I just bought, unless Newegg will refund the purchase.
what's the name of the chat system that accepts sed notation?
HipChat
From Altassian, the people behind BitBucket.
is it useful outside of business?
I'm not sure what exactly it'd be useful for outside that context.
It's basically a hosted version of IRC, with some UI niceties so that the non devs can use it.
So anyways, "when you've eliminated the impossible, whatever remains must be the truth."
Looks like I'm buying a CPU.
Do you know what Amazon's return policy is on computer hardware?
I think they'd be more likely to give me a refund if it doesn't fix this.
erm, don't know
whether they keep to DSD (distance selling regulations) is relevant
There are some exceptions that some companies make for some kinds of goods.
particularly electronic ones or some kinds of electronic ones.
06:37
IIRC Newegg has a fairly strict return policy on CPUs.
You could resell on ebay
Yeah. Not sure how great of a price I'd get there, but it looks like I may not have too much choice in the matter.
I think I'll buy from Amazon anyways, assuming I can find it there.
Found it. **** that's expensive.
see how much you can resell it for on ebay
in fact you may be able to resell it on amazon
Order placed.
I'm not sure what scares me more: that this fixes the problem and I'm out $600, or that this doesn't fix it.
Thanks for listening. I suppose I would've come around to replacing the CPU eventually, but it was good having someone to ask questions and make sure I didn't miss something cheaper first.
06:54
well, I can't guarantee that you didn't miss something cheaper!
here's a bright side..
,
,
If the CPU doesn't work, then you know the other one is probably fine(as you can reason that it then probably wasn't the cpu that was the issue). And then if you want you could sell both CPUs

@soandos Which ones/how? :S
@barlop Host, and yes, it does work manually. You can do it with any telnet program.
@Bob My old one (old = 2 years old or so) did that, but when I died I got an intel centrino something. Don't have the model number, sorry
Bob
Bob
@soandos I meant Atheros router chipsets, not wireless cards..
@Bob ah, my bad

1 hour later…
09:11
@DanielBeck The video resolution is already indexed by Spotlight? kMDItemPixelHeight and kMDItemPixelWidth. The codecs are listed in kMDItemCodecs. Audio bitrate is in kMDItemAudioBitRate, and the total bit rate is in kMDItemTotalBitRate.
If you're looking to parse an external tool, MediaInfo should give you everything. Also has a Homebrew formula.
There's nothing built into OS X though
@Sathya beats me. Might have something to do with getting all 3 question upvote hats ;p
DafuQ?! is unresponsive?
I try to sort but nothing happens, no matter how I sort. I try to search for speceific files and no matter how I search nothing happens.

Bob
@Boris_yo have you tried accessing the target folders directly?
are they on a local drive?
are they redirected (e.g. symbolic link) in any way?
09:30
Yes, yes, address bar shows:

â–º Computer â–º Disk (C:) â–º Users â–º user â–º My Documents

But when clicked on it it changes to the following:

C:\Users\user\Documents
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo Yea, Documents is the actual name (since Vista). Windows (since 7) has shown My Documents as a 'friendly name'. Utter rubbish.
That looks right, though. What about my other two questions?
09:59
Epic troll site :- downloadmoreram.com
@HackToHell One person I know literally claimed they had downloaded a new sound card recently.
And my friends wanted to download a pixel shader :D

How do I launch Clippy?
@Sathya lolololol
(.... It really works - Must have that on SharePoint overflow chat - we are the Office team, cannot miss that)
10:41
@JourneymanGeek omg !
this reminds me of @JourneymanGeek
@Sathya Man, the 5 minutes for writing the superping-userscript have already paid off.
@HackToHell ASUS making headphone amps? What has this world come to? :)
I looks AWESOME !
anybody here?
Nope.
:P
When somebody asks me to make pictures by camera that are gonna be 400-600 DPI..... what megapixel ( resolution ) shout the photos I make be?
Or DPI and megapixel/resoulion of photo are 2 different properties?
10:50
The answer is: It doesn't matter.
@slhck no more free will !
@EinsteinsGrandson because everything is an illusion
@EinsteinsGrandson You can set a 300 megapixel photo to 600 DPI and you can set a 1 Megapixel photo to 600 DPI. It doesn't matter.
The real question is: What print size should the photo have?
I should make a paper in MS Word.... so the size will be small
Go the other way when calculating: You want, let's say an image with 3x3 in.
10:53
When you print something you want to print at least with 300 DPI. Better 600 DPI.
That's how many pixels are actually put in a square inch
So if you want to print 3x3 in with 300 DPI you need a 900x900px photo
And if you want to print at 600 DPI you need a 1800x1800px photo
But this all depends on what the print size should be (in that case 3x3 inch)
See what I mean? :)
So you first need to know how big the result should be on paper.
Yes
Just imagine each picture will be square
Okay. How big are they going to be on the paper? 5x5cm, 2x2in?
and the maximum lenght of one side will be 16cm
which is 6.3 inches
10:56
Okay. So 16cm is 6.3in. 6.3 * 600 is 3780px.
That means your original photo has to be at least 3780x3780px for perfect print quality.
and when I only need 400 DPI ?
6.3 * 400 = 2520px
6.3 * 400 =
exactly :)
2520 x 2520 is how many megapixels?
10:58
Roughly 6
6.3 megapixel ?
OK
do you have a link to the website?
What website?
@EinsteinsGrandson That's Photoshop, actually
But I guess any half way decent image editor should do that
IrfanView probably has that as well, for Windows. Or Paint.NET
How can I save this last 30 messages between me and you on this chat?
;o)
11:04
@HackToHell funny that, I was thinking of getting one of those
well the internal version
but my fastrack works just as well
(and seriously, if you want a good soundcard at a reasonable price, go with low end digital audio workstation gear)
@JourneymanGeek +1

(Actually I'm trying to decide between the headphones sidran32 and another friend has or another ATH M50 - my old one is falling apart, and while I favour a SPECIFIC model of extreme low budget headphones for portable listening, My old snobby music pair is falling apart)
11:09
And what if the picture ratio is not 1:1 but 16:9 or 4:3 ?
lucky for me, I found 2 pairs of my non snob headphones so I got em ;p
(2 dollars. beats the crap out of earphones 10 times the cost. ACTUALLY FIT!)
then when we get back to Okay. So 16cm is 6.3in. 6.3 * 600 is 3780px.

That means your original photo has to be at least 3780x3780px for perfect print quality
So now, the pic has to be 3780*(4/3) x 3780 ?
Or 3780 x (3/4)*3780 ?
you probably need to worry more about pixel density than resolution. So scale it with actual size on either side
Journeyman, what do you mean by that?
basically the shorter side would have less picels
11:13
Just multiply the original size
E.g. 3x4in = 3*600 x 4*600 px
And I will keep the picture in 600 DPI , right?
@EinsteinsGrandson Well, yeah.
@Sathya You're awesome.
OK, thank you guys
@slhck actually, @balpha & @Marc are, but I can take their credit too :P
11:15
actually I need to test these out
and scan the instruction sheet
japanese dollar store instruction sheets are the win
@Sathya I contributed to 4% of the conversation too :P
@Sathya Man
Merged for now. Feel free to suspend

@slhck next time, it'll be that kill with fire gif
Do the mod messages support images?
That would open tons of possibilities!
Anyway g2g grocery shopping, later folks

And the SU and SO question somewhat differ.
It's somewhat questionable if nginx fits on Super User.
ooh I hit 10k BOINC credits today ;)
@JourneymanGeek Not seen those before?
naw, its a mechanical version of the nostromo ;p
which people have been asking for for ages
12:15
@JourneymanGeek Extra macro pads have been around for years... I used to use one when playing WOW ~3-4 years ago
@HaydnWVN: its a mechanical macro pad ;p
Yeah, and...? :P
thats the thing ;p
mechanical anything is awesome ;p
/me rolleyes
XD
though its left handed
@HaydnWVN: one of the things I'd love is a simple 4 button + thumb stick controller to replace a mouse. right handed tho
then again
I just hurt my pointy finger gaming too much
12:53
Why the pointy? Why not just use an xbox controller with the analogue d-pad
pretty sure you could fabricate a thumb stick for the middle
Then you enter into the realms of pad vs mouse+keyboard wars
I still consider using the mouse in FPS far superior to any other interface... My console gaming friends would argue, but any time i've seen them play it's far slower and less accurate
My friend who plays BF3 on xbox couldn't get his head around how quick and accurate I was on PC...
13:24
Anyone here done MCSE/MCSA?
@Bob Yes as well. By the way it does not matter which folder I am trying to sort or search, every library displays same problems. Tried removing "Read Only" checkmark and this did not change anything.

@Boris_yo so.. they are redirected?
@Bob No, I don't see any symbols.

@HaydnWVN low movement pointing
this is more for general stuff than gaming in my case
think a oversized trackpoint type device
14:52
@HackToHell Why exactly at the airport? And that Mr. Hodges really hates luxury sports cars...
@Boris_yo It had a lot of jumps, easy way to wreck car :)
@HackToHell I think these are specifics already which I am not familiar with because I have long time ago quit game addiction... No rehab needed ;)
The only game i found addictive was tf2, took me quite a will to quit.
@HackToHell So you too quit gaming? Or currently on rehab (resting place for addicted gamers)?
I only quit playing a game :P I find messing with my pc to be more interesting than games
14:59
;p
I've been gaming a lot lately
tho stopped playing borderlands 2 for torchlight 2
