@JourneymanGeek It looks like Afterburner
basically does the same thing
wouldn't be suprised if they licenced the same software
Afterburner is based on Rivatuner
and it does not have a FB and VID column
Does your card support over volting ?
yup
probably does
let me check
ya
I can set a minimum GPU voltage
And Catalyst Control Center is buggy !
I can't open OverDrive :/
I have to use afterburner
thats the 'full' GPU tweak windows... all 3 of them
@HackToHell: I've tended to get nvidia cards, for the same reason I build intel systems
at the point of time that I'm actually doing these things, the intel and nvidia option seems more worth it
tho, I was seriously tempted to get a cheapie AMD at one point
02:22
They are Clones !
lol
probably based off the same software
does that include a reskinned GPU-Z?
ah hah!
its probably a reskinned version of ATItweak
@JourneymanGeek nope
interesting ;p
02:55
is the video capture option in afterburner greyed out?
does it work? ;p
notes if the same thing is broken on both...
03:36
lol

MSI... Afterburner download page... WHY IS IT IN FLASH?!
04:51
lol
05:29
thats a suprise
tom's hardware did a pretty massive benchmark... and were leaning towards intel
I was under the impression they were traditionally AMD oriented

Q: Enabling AMD Catalyst Driver in Windows 8 causes Laptop display to be turned off

SathyaI have a 2010 HP Envy 14 which has a hybrid Intel HD IGP/ AMD 5650 Discrete GPU running on Windows 8. Off late, my laptop has had problems overheating, which was a result of the system fan not working. During the process of "verifying" that the system fan was not working, my Windows 8 install cr...

so, who's up for this :P
05:43
@Sathya bad driver?
@soandos no, the same driver's worked before
I have a feeling the vga-switcheroo might have caused some screwup
Can you turn it on manually via the fn shortcut?
@soandos switch what on?
the display
nope, that doesn't have any effect.
there's no output being driven via the HDMI port, neither is there any display on the screen
05:46
got it
Bob
Bob
@Sathya Huh.. try the HP drivers for a different model, just for kicks? :P
If they will install, of course.
@Bob they're all the same..
essentially the beta drivers are the retail drivers minus the shim for checking for OEM cards
Bob
Bob
Did you install the chipset drivers?
@Bob yes
Bob
Bob
@Sathya Sometimes, OEM hardware does funny things that break generic drivers :\
05:52
yeah :(
Bob
Bob
This works for me, but it's for a different model/GPU
@Bob okay, let me try 'em
Bob
Bob
@Sathya Good luck.

1 hour later…
07:25
anyone know how to reduce the CPU speed as much as possible in windows 8?
07:36
@soandos As much as possible? Remove the CPU
@OliverSalzburg not quite that much
I put it on power saver, and didn't see anything else to do
ideas?
What are you trying to achieve? Save power?
No. Stop my laptop from overheating (I'm decently sure the root cause is bad thermal paste)
07:39
Oh, it's a laptop as well :\ I was thinking about suggesting mainboard manufacturer tools
Not really sure if there's a generic software approach
and I don't think my BIOS supports underclocking (or overclocking)
I'm pretty sure turboboost can knock the clock speed to 1Ghz
but it won't keep it there if there is work to be done
there was this tool for that..
damned if I could remember what it was called
also, if there is a way to do something similar for the GPU, that might also be necessary (not sure what is overheating really)
GPU. probably MSI afterburner if you're running intel or nvidia
that the name of the program?
Downloading now :)
despite the name it works on non MSI processors
I was going to say
Asus has an eerily similar application
Will it matter that I have an Asus laptop?
07:42
(and I remember this cause @HackToHell and I were talking about them seeming similar earlier ;p)
well, I've not tried it on a laptop
but lots of people report it works on anything with a nvidia or amd/ati graphics card
got it
what is kombustor?
burn in utility
I don't QUITE think you need that
burn in?
hm
opposite of what you want to do
run the GPU at full power to see if it malfunctions
useful if you overclock
hmm
could you use speedfan and run the fans harder?
I have speedfan, but I am not sure it can control the fans
Bob
Bob
07:48
@soandos Depends on the fans
@Bob, It does not show any fan controlers
Bob
Bob
I think most laptop fans are controllable though
and get a laptop tray thing ;p
Bob
Bob
:S
07:48
with fans
Bob
Bob
stupid non-standard OEMs
I usually have a box fan just sitting under my laptop
that works fine
Bob
Bob
xD
did that with a desktop once
though we got a new one shortly after
Bob
Bob
07:49
I remember how I used to run my P4 machine
with the side cover off and a box fan at full power pointing at it
:D
the problem is when I don't have my box fan
did everyone do that with their P4s?
@soandos Is it an Intel or AMD CPU?
Can I assume that the memory clock for the CPU does not matter?
Bob
Bob
07:50
@JourneymanGeek Well, during summer :P
@OliverSalzburg Intel
ya, it dosen't
just the core clock then
your memory is probably running at a sane speed anyhow
@Bob: tropics. ALWAYS HOT
GPU clock was going at 550 Mhz
Bob
Bob
07:51
@JourneymanGeek Wasn't Sydney in a temperate region? :P
donno, never lived there ;p
SpeedStep is a trademark for a series of dynamic frequency scaling technologies (codenamed Geyserville and including SpeedStep, SpeedStep II, and SpeedStep III) built into some Intel microprocessors that allow the clock speed of the processor to be dynamically changed (to different P-states) by software. This allows the processor to meet the instantaneous performance needs of the operation being performed, while minimizing power draw and heat dissipation. Enhanced Intel SpeedStep is sometimes abbreviated as EIST. Explanation Running a processor at high clock speeds allows for better perfor...

Bob
Or do you mean you're in the tropics?
I mean I'm in the tropics
Bob
Bob
ah.
My geography skills are horrible.
07:51
and its always hot ;p
nyx runs at 35 degrees at idle BB (my c2d) runs at 45
Bob
Bob
All I know about Singapore is it's somewhere between Australia and Japan/Russia
@OliverSalzburg I tried something like that
Bob
Bob
America is somewhere over to the northeast
Don't really know the syntax though
but nyx's case is slightly overkill, and sort of barely takes any effort to cool my PC ;p
Bob
Bob
07:53
heck, I'm not entirely sure where in Australia Sydney is, relative to other cities :\
Didn't someone ask about some VID graph yesterday?
A voltage regulator module or VRM, sometimes called PPM (processor power module), is a buck converter that provides a microprocessor the appropriate supply voltage, converting or to a much lower voltage required by the CPU. Some are soldered to the motherboard while others are installed in an open slot. It allows processors with different supply voltage to be mounted on the same motherboard. Most modern CPUs require less than . CPU designers tend to design to smaller CPU core voltages; lower voltages help reduce CPU power dissipation, often referred to as thermal design power (TDP). S...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm running at 43
what the hell is using a whole core
well, I was more interested in the FB graph
Bob
Bob
of course, as soon as I go check it disappear
@JourneymanGeek Ah, yes, it was you :D
07:55
XD
yes, cause I was complaining i got downvoted without comment ;p
@JourneymanGeek Seems like there's an "f buffer" in opengl rasterization or some sort
But that seems overly specific to be in a tool like that :D
Time for breakfast!
08:20
@JourneymanGeek Didn't try it, I use fraps
@OliverSalzburg: I assumed its framebuffer usage

@HackToHell Trying to do GPU accerlated encoding?

Heh, VLC is wearing a santa hat :P
Hats!

I have a Lumia 920 now and I like it. 😃
And I can take screenshots now! Finally.
@OliverSalzburg Hats everywhere, except for your avatar :P
@sidran32: winphone 8?
11:49
@OliverSalzburg thats a pretty well known easter egg ;p
12:05
oh..k...
12:16
pretty good day ^^ over 100 reo
12:54
@JourneymanGeek yep
@OliverSalzburg VLC does that since it's inception
@HackToHell I never use it, so I was missing out on the hat awesomeness :(
VLC's ok, WMP with KLite is better :)
@HackToHell Yeah, that's what I prefer as well
Well, MPC actually
MPC broke my codecs when I installed it and I can't find any difference between the two
Doesn't KLite come bundled with MPC?
Alright, closed that moneybooker/skrill account. A fee for account inactivity? That's a nice way to keep your service afloat
13:02
Oh shit you were referring to Media Player Classic, I was talking about another codec pack, sorry !

1 hour later…
14:13
Dumb Question, how does the ISP limit UDP packets, TCP has a limiter, UDP does not
Can I ask this in SU ?
mpc is just a different frontend for the windows media player backend
do you mean cccp?
that might do it
I tend to use that, but thats the only codec pack I consider installing
and the above question, can i ask it in SU ?
Bob
Bob
14:33
@OliverSalzburg Oh wow, has it really been a whole year?
@JourneymanGeek It never worked for me :P
lol
generally has worked for me

@TomWijsman Ah! That's it! Thanks.
Been bugging me for half an hour now :P
Damn it, Microsoft. Removing a wireless mouse dongle on Windows 8 triggers a KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE BSoD. This is due to their own drivers :\
