I'm downloading the Windows 8 upgrade via the Windows 8 Upgrade assistant. I assumed the Upgrade assistant would resume the download when I quit it - however that doesn't seem to be the case.

I used software RAID. (RAID 1 as a boot partition md0, RAID 0 as a root partition md1 and RAID 5 as /home partition md3).
Unfortunately one of these hard drives failed lately and I want to replace it with a new one.

First part of it, seems Modern UI eventually didn't made it and it sounds like this might be the final name. Let's just wait a bit longer (or do some research) and change the tag once it's definitive.
@HackToHell fdisk is the easy option but for more settings and config any partition manager should be able to do it, my favourite (for everything) is gparted
I've even turned to it for data migration, data recovery and wiping old drives
so many tools within the normal gparted setup you can do almost anything
