@Sathya: quite honestly I couldn't tell with all those caps
more like 'Nilam' iirc
@JourneymanGeek converted to sentence case, was still useless
heh looks like the blog post was screwed up in a new and unique way, go fig
/me thinks he'll sit out the blog part of it for now
morning peeps
heya @slhck
@slhck morning
07:03
so what's up?
I just realised the keyboard shortcut is a nice way to simulate a on screen button
thats a total duh moment
For me not too much after completing level 4
@avirk wow, congrats!
aww i can't put a check next to my own answer.
Thanks @slhck
07:05
@MatthewWong: there's a delay if you didn't do it immediately
@Matthew now wait for two days....
I only have the edit and voting tile :/
@avirk damn
@slhck you don't have the accepted answer tile?
@MatthewWong Well, I have no machine running Windows 8, so I couldn't really ask or answer anything :P
@slhck you don't post answers for the Windows so how could be other tiles for you ;p
07:07
@MatthewWong: @slhck is one of our resident mac users
@slhck go with Google :P
@avirk Haha.. I should probably just do that, yeah
Shouldn't be too hard, guess most questions have been answered by now
There are still many to come.
@slhck: I suspect very few of the folk who are in the contest are actually running a proper install of windows 8
myself included, I just threw on an evaluation copy
Well, should be enough right
07:09
@JourneymanGeek im running windows 8 on a computer with no windows key
:P
I'M with 30 days trial after suggesting by nifle and @ jou :D
@MatthewWong: eheh. how is the cr48? ;p
buggy as fuck. sometimes when i boot up it says that theres no bootable device. so i have to turn on and off the cr-48 until it boots up
AND i get BSoDs
sounds fun
my systems have been relatively stable lately, other than the hard drives overheating on the shared comp
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek The hard drives overheating?
07:13
can anyone recommend me a good wireless router?
Bob
Bob
Time to dust/install more fans :P
@Bob: seems to be, according to acronis
@Bob: eh, the system is 6 years old
wowwwwww thats expensive
the last one that is
@MatthewWong: I've stuck with my WRT54GL so far
old thing, built like a tank ;p
07:15
looks like a tank too
a purple and grey doom tank
i could have sworn it was blue o0
Bob
Bob
@MatthewWong Would probably have no issues at all with a mid sized office with the appropriate switch
i like how my question gets 2 downvotes but my answer gets 2 upvotes
@MatthewWong: I'm convinced there's a few people who're not very happy with self answers
assuming thats what you mean
Bob
Bob
mostly the newer people
07:18
yup
Bob
Bob
who missed the blog post/add self answer checkbox, and tend to argue against comments mentioning it :\
pretty much
Bob
Bob
I really don't understand why they argue that self answers are wrong/not allowed after the official SE blog talking about how they're accepted and encouraged :S
at this point, I actually can't wait for things to get back to normal ;p
Bob
Bob
Also, I like italics
07:19
@Bob: cause cough its apparently cheating
how so?
@MatthewWong: beats me, apparently you both question and answer?
because we're not giving someone else a chance to answer?
nothing stops you from posting a good answer and getting more upvotes
(since votes are not a zero sum game)
Bob
Bob
@MatthewWong anyone else can answer
the only real rule of self answered questions is that the question must be phrased as such and should have all the information required for anyone else to answer
in other words, it should look like a normal question the asker doesn't know the answer to :P
07:23
oh...
well i guess that explains the downvotes
its silly IMO
Bob
Bob
@MatthewWong You've only answered one non-Windows-8 question, in 53 answers o.O
Now I'm wondering which one it is :P
@Bob: ya, I think I pointed out to him there's other questions ;p
07:29
i remember doing one but its a pain to go through all my answers
Bob
Bob
But, yea, that's a lot :P
very active here
im one of the 6 to get the windows-8 badge :P
thought there would be more though
who knows how to get more question views?
I think I answered 64
post it on facebook
people will think wtf is this and click on it
07:32
but of course, I'm a generalist
waves his walking stick complaining about kids these days and getting off my lawn and other old people stuff
(disclaimer - I do own a walking stick... though its never used as one. I do, however do not own a lawn)
@ronalchn: get it on reddit I guess
@JourneymanGeek 29=old?
@ronalchn: sure feel that way
@JourneymanGeek not sure how I can do that. I don't like making lots of accounts.
I already added it to stumbleupon, and a lot of news sites
07:34
or yanno, just try not to get every single tile
why not?
oh, you can
but there's more to the site than the challenge
learn new things! challenge yourself! get your dream job!
im already in my dream job :)
see, its so amazing it acts BACKWARDS IN TIME!
07:38
zzz, my system backup taking so long...
its going to be 1/2 TB
zzzzzzzz
@MatthewWong About your question, since you were asking about the downvotes
Even if you can ask and answer your own question, we require these questions to be of the same standards as others. So, just because you know the answer that shouldn't make the question itself vague, or lacking research effort. If the answer really is "click on the search button", then why did there have to be a question about it in the first place?
So, asking and answering your own questions should be more of that sort
i just thought that would be a good question because usually that functionality would be in app. instead it was already supported in the os which i kind of missed.
and @bob gave me the same explanation too
@MatthewWong Ah, fair enough, I just saw you asking on the main site.

Q: A free and online pc/hard devastator?

user1232256I have a PC with Window XP operating system. I don't have any important data or program or documents... on this computer. I want a free online devastator virus or program that sabotage this computer and its hard, because I want a period of time this computer don't work and will disable ;) I do th...

nooo i was gonna flag that
07:51
I'll let the community handle it :P
We could just tell him to plug straight into the internet, disable the firewall and see what happens.
or delete system32
@slhck yay, free flag
@slhck: the only problem there is, I can't think of which one of 3 close reasons to put ;p
haha
come on guys, free flags y'all
i chose spam :P
07:53
@MatthewWong Well, technically it's not spam, so please don't choose that option unless it's really viagra or chinese gold mines or whatever.
@MatthewWong: spam's more likely to get rejected
I put too localized
since it comes with a free automatic rep penalty
because few people would want to do that
off topic would be the best option
07:53
wheres the undo button?
@MatthewWong I cleared it for you. You can't undo it yourself.
there isn't one ;p

Q: Downloading apps on BlueStacks

JoeI am trying to download an app on BlueStacks App Player for Windows. It says it is downloading with a dialog box but it stays there for ever. The image in the links below shows the dialog box. http://i.imgur.com/xblH7.png

since I can't flag (not that it matters anymore), I'll just post something unintelligible as a comment
fixed
though I guess someone needs to do the tag/tagwiki for it
@JourneymanGeek we have a couple of bluestacks questions, might need to tag those
07:57
@slhck: tag created, as is the exerpt ;)
i would like to suggest a synonym for metro-ui
microsoft-design-language
metro-ui needs to be renamed
it is renamed
they call it windows-store-apps officially
all children away?
07:58
but really its just a pain in the **** with so many names
...
OLD COUNTRY WHY YOU DO THIS TO ME?
I swear, they themselves don't know
haha
08:00
I think MUI is probably a good middle ground until they frigging make up their minds
why can't microsoft just choose one?
they like to change the name of everything
they never changed windows 8
I think they weren't prepared for being sued about metro
i can't believe im still getting upvotes for this.
63
A: Is there a way to enable "god mode" in Windows 8, like you could in Windows 7?

Matthew WongYou just do the same on Windows 8. Go to Desktop. Create a new folder. Rename it to GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

08:02
I can't believe the OP didn't even try this.
i can't believe its still not butter
sorry @JourneymanGeek, I had to un-upvote you so that another answer is higher than yours
Bob
Bob
@MatthewWong ? you can have multiple people with the same display name
how do you think I'm using "Bob"?
@Bob i assumed you were an early adopter
@Bob really? what happens if somebody tries to impersonate somebody else?
08:13
@ronalchn We'll kick 'em in the butt.
what if two of the same name are in the same thread?
how do you @... differentiate between them
the database erases itself
Bob
Bob
@ronalchn you don't :P
the latter one is replied to
@ronalchn user id, rep
night for me
see you around @MatthewWong
08:20
I'm running out of questions to answer
Did anybody write a blog post?
@slhck watchlist
@ronalchn not cause the answer was not up to scratch?
@JourneymanGeek because I upvoted both, but the scores were the same, and I thought the other one was better for now
eh, votes arn't a zero sum game, but whatever
Bob
Bob
08:27
@ronalchn Ow.. the sheer number and general quality of those makes it a bit daunting :P
@JourneymanGeek yeah, its also the one I put a bounty on to try get more views, the aim is to get 1k views by contest end date
well that was rude.
@ronalchn You should vote on the merits of each post, not in comparison with other answers.
08:43
@ronalchn: Really your choice, I really don't think I have anything to say on the matter. The 10 rep really isn't that big a thing to me. I do think you need not have mentioned it though
09:08

@JourneymanGeek ooh adds to collection
@JourneymanGeek lmao
@Sathya: for a moment I was hoping dad bought a wierd off brand phone ;p
its likely to be something common and maybe even usable.

People are strange.

@slhck wait, you can see that someone upvoted? o.O
@Bob Only if you flag, we can see whether you actually left a comment, etc.
Otherwise, no, of course not.
Bob
Bob
ah
09:50
@JourneymanGeek What's default image size of avatars on here? (so i know what to crop to)
@HaydnWVN: I actually have no idea. gravatar will resize it for you
hm
/me is noticing some odd question/answer patterns
@JourneymanGeek and Macrium Reflect Free, any good? I've been using Acronis TrueImage (oldish version from Hirens) and then the latest on my desktop when/if I need to restore anything... Previously used Ghost in the same way.
Bob
Bob
@HaydnWVN 64x64 px on chat, left of the input box
I don't like Clonezilla, but still use it, g4l is good too from a live CD
@HaydnWVN: I love it. Also helps one of their devs uses superuser ;)
09:55
@Bob thanks
clonezilla is.. a little quirky but reliable
Bob
Bob
128x128 on profile page on SU
@HaydnWVN: reflect free is my backup software of choice on windows XP
I ought to get the paid version when I get a job and get a proper backup plan set up
@JourneymanGeek My usage is backing up 2000/XP/7 to an image for backup when migrating users machines, so it's only really for 1-off backup purposes rather than ongoing backups
ought to work then
I'd also check the licence if its in a professional environment, I mostly do it at home
Office has been 'backups? who has time for backups?'
09:58
@JourneymanGeek Yeah I looked at it before but came to the 'ease of use' of just having a Hiren CD for everything so naturally ended up using Acronis or g4l from the linux liveCD
Bob
Bob
oh boy
then again, faulty backup systems aren't any better
@Bob: oh, we should know better
@JourneymanGeek Lol these backups are for our use more than anything - the users have network mapped my docs and know to store important things on their group shares... 90% the time backups are for my peace of mind lol
@HaydnWVN: Quite honestly I've had a few painful data losses
I cannot back up enough
10:00
(as i like to nuke n pave) >:D
I've had one very painful personal one (lost 12gig of MP3's about 8 years ago) and been involved in many recoveries on a professional level
Bob
Bob
my dad's office, where he's semi-official tech guy and I'm asked half the time, has had one external backup drive crash and multiple RAID failures in the last half a year... though the 8 year old server computer with a possibly faulty RAID card is a major problem :P
@HaydnWVN: I had one of those seagate 1tb drives with faulty firmware
Bob
Bob
I'm just waiting for the day when the server goes down completely and he has to restore onto one of the desktop machines from backup :P
music, thankfully I have multiple backups right now
Bob
Bob
so much for RAID
10:03
2 copies, one on external one on internal, and a selection on the phone ;)
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek where do you get your music from? :P
oh, and one more copy on my old ipod
@Bob: quite a few sources, most of which involve things falling off the back of a truck
Bob
Bob
lol
started off with my brother's music collection
then people sent me stuff
then I went looking for more stuff
I PLEAD THE FIFTH!
@JourneymanGeek I've naturally progressed to multiple copies now rather than a backup routine
Bob
Bob
10:04
I actually don't know how online stores (e.g. iTunes/Amazon) handle loss of music after download - do you need to buy it again?
@JourneymanGeek Aren't you in Singapore? :P
@Bob: Well, most of my music is flac
always had a home server (usually a previous gen workstation) for file storage but the last 2 years (since a house move & server death) i've lapsed
which mean I rip and tag a good chunk of them from source myself
@Bob details details details
@Bob Depends on the online store, most the download is linked to the account so you can re-download, some only for a specific time after purchase, some don't even offer it unless you purchase additional services
Bob
Bob
that reminds me, I need to figure out offsite backup sometime
10:06
most of the online music stores are DRM free these days arn't they?
@Bob Note: setup offsite backup as simple as possible... Otherwise it doesn't happen
Bob
Bob
@HaydnWVN I'm thinking crashplan
crashplan is great when it works
(I've had issues with one of my systems, darn thing just dosen't backup)
Bob
Bob
eh.. gonna be painfully slow though
ahh, here's the cute part
you can backup to USB
then move the backup to another system
then attach it
and the backup continues from there
Bob
Bob
10:09
it takes me all night (12 hours) to upload 3gb
We have a backup server here running 3rd party backup setup... 5 Daily full backups of our group folders on Fileserver & whole Database server. Then a bi-monthy end of month full backup of the Fileserver, Database server and Intranet server. the end of months and previous day backups are always offsite.
Bob
Bob
2 tb of data... oh crap
assuming no compression, that would take me a good year to upload xD
@JourneymanGeek continues from there?
continues to do what?
Entire system backs up onto a removable caddy on an old server (IDE interface) which is starting to become a problem (3.5" IDE drives are hard to get 500gig+) and the speed (currently taking 10 hours)
@Bob: you can move a backup on USB to another system, then continue the backup over network
Bob
Bob
oh lol
nice
10:11
and if they're on the same lan, it gets done over lan
totally unrelated but utterly adorable
Hello guys, I am planning to buy a new monitor and I just picked one but others in my house says they have never heard of the brand. This is the one that I picked aocmonitorap.com/egypt_eng/monitor_265.php. Should I opt for this try other brands like Dell , Samsung etc ?
oh AOC
supposedly decent budget brand
is its life expectancy good ?
actually nearly picked up one of theirs but the asus I ended up getting was slightly bigger
no idea.didn't end up getting it
they should be ok though, everyone uses nearly the same parts ;p
(I have a batch of benqs though. Every. damned. capacitor. is. shot)
Bob
Bob
o.O
how to kill a series: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…
10:24
my dad says he has a samsung CRT syncmaster that is around 9 years old and still works like new. So he is kinda forcing me to pick a monitor from samsung brand but I can't find any Samsung monitor with IPS panel , HDMI and full HD, with LED
hmm
why not go for one of those offbrand korean monitors?
300 bucks gets you everything but HDMI, a little more would get you that too
@Failed_Noob CRTs always last a long time (as old technologies often do)
service has been ok from other people who have had em
(I want one, eventually, new desktop comes first ;p)
10:35
@Failed_Noob I wouldn't be surprised if you pry open a cheap monitor and find a Samsung LCD panel inside ;P
@Failed_Noob AOC ok brand have a couple of them here, but tend to look at Hanns-G and LG where possible (have 20+ Hanns-G's)
Oh Acer and Viewsonic too
Looking at my list we do have a couple of older Samsungs and quite a few HP's probably from new machine deals (all our machines are 90% HP)
(including servers)
anyone seen these? Samsung ATIV smart tablets? misco.co.uk/samsung-ativ-smart-pc?cm_sp=Samsung--ativ--carousel
10pt touch screens?! :o
@HaydnWVN Have not
Good specs on the i5, shame about the battery life (<6 hours = painful)
10:57
@OliverSalzburg: there's like 3-4 panel makers left
and usually the panels arn't the parts that fail, in my case its capasitors
@JourneymanGeek Haven't had any monitor failures in a few years
Except our (Samsung) television
Has a dead pixel column :(
@OliverSalzburg: I had a bad batch
@JourneymanGeek Ouch
been fixing them up over the holidays, almost got one working of 3
then I have another one where the screen goes yellow every so often
but that was a serious no name screen
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek If it's VGA, could be a faulty connection
11:08
hmm, I'll give it a shot if we didn't throw it out in the move
@JourneymanGeek If it's TFT it'll be power inverter
which is probably not worth fixing
most colour/flicker problems are inverter related not panels
ya, but If i fix all the broken monitors I have, I may have too many ;p
Oh i dunno, i've found power inverters for laptop screens on ebay for ~$50
ROFL
Also think about possible productivity loss caused by viruses or hardware failure, especially when your users are no a road.
11:19
@HaydnWVN: I have 3 monitors that need a re-cap
and you can pretty much get a complete circuit board for that much, with inverters
11:34
@JourneymanGeek Agreed, but worth it for laptops
@OliverSalzburg: when i get a job I gotta get me one of those
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg o.O
ok, so 1. it's still relevant and 2. I need a MSDN subscription :P
Hehehe
Given that they shower you in product keys, it's really worth every cent :D
But then again, you're not allowed to use them in production
production? no. personal testing, frick, heck, yes.
Bob
Bob
11:44
heh
5 keys per product?
why the hell not
@Bob More like 25
Don't know what happens if you need more
But their library contains everything from the first MS-DOS to the latest Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Edition
Bob
Bob
> subscriptions include five product keys for current versions of Windows and Office products and three product keys for older versions
@Bob Oh they reduced it. Oh well
Bob
Bob
11:45
though they mention multiple activations, so I'm confused now
Well, we never really purchased it for anything but software for testing
So there never was a key shortage
5 feels a bit too little though! :D
Bob
Bob
lol
wow, $20k for the ultimate one
and only the $10k premium one has office :\
Bob
Bob
...brb checking a proxy
@Bob IIRC they used to have VS Standard with an MSDN Premium option
Now they don't seem to have it any longer :(
11:52
that sounds a LOT more expensive than the last time I checked the prices of those
Bob
Bob
!@#$
yea
bloody Australian prices
through a VPN, the same are $13k and $6k respectively
@JourneymanGeek Yeah i'm sure it was nowhere near that, pretty sure i was offered it for £1500 when i started my MCSE
Bob
Bob
OS subscription is $1100 compared to $600
Bob
Bob
gah
11:53
look at technet
Bob
Bob
almost double the fricking price on everything
brb reboot
Bob
Bob
note to self: if buying MSDN subscription, do so through a USA VPN -___-
fewer licences, but cheaper
Bob
Bob
fewer?
in what way?
oh, technet
11:55
well i suspect so, this computer is lagging, defragging now ;p
Bob
Bob
same story
Wow. Yesterday our fridge broke down. It keeps making alarm noises. So, obviously, I wanted to call support this morning after the fridge has kept me awake all night
Bob
Bob
technet standard is $337 in Aus, $199 in US
alarm noises?
So I just grabbed the house phone, and the battery is drained!
Bob
Bob
when our fridge broke down, it just stopped cooling :P
11:56
I put the phone on the charging station and just checked it again. Still empty
I open the thing up, there are batteries inside. The non-rechargeable kind
Bob
Bob
do MSDN/TechNet licences expire if you stop renewing the subscription?
@Bob: I don't think so
Bob
Bob
i.e. do activated products become unactivated?
the TechNet one implies that
@OliverSalzburg wait wut
@Bob Not from my experience
Bob
Bob
someone failed battery replacement :P
11:58
@Bob Girlfriend replaced them the other day.
Bob
Bob
I guess Access full-version software1 for 12 months with no feature limits means access to new licences/downloads
@OliverSalzburg Ah, the non-technical one? ;P
@Bob Right :D
meh "Microsoft may deactivate or otherwise limit your keys when your subscription ends. Deactivated keys will not be able to activate software."
This can't be that good for the phone. Trying to charge non-rechargeable batteries for weeks
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ah, so already activated software's good, I hope?
@OliverSalzburg phone would be fine
you're lucky the batteries didn't leak/explode, though
11:59
@Bob Good to know
