@JourneymanGeek I have it in my windows 10 install
I think
unless Windows somehow upgraded itself without my knowledge
but I don't think my computer would run it
11:50
close enough :D
12:33
true
I must confess that I am still pretty unclear on the differences
seems visual
12:53
@JourneymanGeek Nope that was Win 10

@forest It's called "search highlights" (aka another way to make you use Bing and show you ads) ghacks.net/2022/03/17/…
@bertieb Setting screen is completely different and drum roll rounded window corners
Oh, and the "why is the start button in the center" thing
Oh you can move it left

Isn't that sooo nice of them thank you Microsoft :)
@NotStandingwithGoGotaHome So what kind of feature is this? What application is providing these info? How to call it using the cmd?
Also I have a memory dump of this task generated from the Task Manager - no way I'm sharing it tho
uhm, probably need/should ask a question on the main site >_>
with a lot more details like how its connected, and what it is
No, I am highly experinced in that regard
I don't want a direct answer
just want to discuss this....
@JourneymanGeek OK, I will add this info in a different website and just add the link here - so no clutter in the chat - OK? (Should I delete the messages?)
@NotStandingwithGoGotaHome More that super user would be a better place and that does belong as a question
@JourneymanGeek Yes
Finally got the last of a set of toner cartridges for this printer.
This is what people hate about printers: that the ink or toner can cost more than the printer itself.
Judicious use of store loyalty rewards (Staples often gives 30% back in rewards on ink and toner), credit card rewards (redeemed for gift cards), and even their return policy (Staples accepts returns of unopened cartridges as long as they're not expired) have absorbed much of the cost.
At least I don't print a whole lot of color. Black toner's usually not that exorbitantly expensive, it's the color that really gets you.

15:04
Yeah, a full set for the Brother I'm using sets me back about 270 euro :x
I'm already on my third... Granted, I do have a significant paper process (due to many projects and activities simultaneously, and this damned laptop grinding to a halt if I have too much open)
You can also buy third-party ink cartridges online, which are less expensive than the name brand. I purchased some for my 10+ year old printer. When I got them in the mail, ink was leaking out of them, but Amazon let me return them and they sent replacements which have been working fine for months now.
MiG
MiG
Need to read up on those. I recall with inkjets it was a bit of hit and miss, don't know how this is for laser printers and toner
15:48
Yeah, if you want peace of mind and can afford it, then go with the name brand. :)
MiG
MiG
still interested if there's something qualitatively good that doesn't smear, have changed colours etc tbh
are third party toner cartridges even a thing btw?

I ask you all to help me to create a good title for my question.

Q: Calling "Device properties" window (or the data) from CMD

NotStanding with GoGotaHomeI live in a residential neighborhood and have my own office space. This phone is hooked to my Windows 7 PC (See note 1). I used a standard USB-C to USB-A connection. Tracking the charge statistics of all my linked phones is something I enjoy well. The following screenshot was taken in File explor...

i feel your question needs more focus. its close to asking for scripting advice.
16:52
@MiG With color laser, it's very risky.
A reputable brand like LD Products, a bit less so.
Monochrome laser, less so, especially with older models, but don't get some random brand.
Personally? I never run non-OEM ink or toner in any of my printers. Never have, never will.
And the color cartridges I ordered for the C405 aren't even the "extra-high capacity" ones ($300, 8,000 pages). They're just "high capacity" ($240, 4,800 pages). That's because I don't have enough color print volume to justify it. I do have an extra-high capacity black toner cartridge, though ($205, 10,500 pages).
I just don't trust third-party supplies, certainly not in an expensive color laser printer.
@MiG Specs?
Brother's high-end printers are cheap to run, but I hate how slow they are to print duplex.

@bwDraco Just a home office thing, DCP-L3510CDW
pretty happy with its print quality and performance
Considering adding a printer dedicated to high quality photo printing (up to rimless A4 if possible, something that doesn't fade fast)
That's one of their entry-level color printers. It's technically an LED printer; instead of using laser scanners to expose the drums with the image to be printed, it uses arrays of tiny LEDs. On these smaller Brother machines, those LED printheads are above the drums, hence lifting up the whole scanner assembly to access the cartridges.
MiG
MiG
got it during the early lockdown days, it's been with me for two years now
oic, interesting :)
changing cartridges is pretty smooth as well, I recall the crap with early inkjets (like HP's deskjet 500C) where I would continuously be afraid snapping something off
But Brother's unusual print-engine designs mean that it's extremely slow to print duplex.
MiG
MiG
it's alright tbh
I do print duplex regularly, but not exactly full books
18:15
How many impressions have you printed on it so far?
MiG
MiG
18:50
I assume that translates to 'pages'?
3336
Yeah.
Hmm. About 150 pages a month...
MiG
MiG
what's the reason 'pages' has been replaced with 'impressions' in jargon?
@bwDraco what about it?
Just wondering.
MiG
MiG
I have no idea if that's a lot or average
It's not an unusually high volume. These smaller color xerographic printers will handle this kind of usage easily.
MiG
MiG
18:57
yep
they're not large documents either, usually notes I want to keep handy, or pages I want to read and annotate
("xerographic" because they use a modified form of xerography, a photocopying process)
Xerography is a dry photocopying technique. Originally called electrophotography, it was renamed xerography—from the Greek roots ξηρός xeros, "dry" and -γραφία -graphia, "writing"—to emphasize that unlike reproduction techniques then in use such as cyanotype, the process of xerography used no liquid chemicals. == History == Xerography was invented by American physicist Chester Carlson, based significantly on contributions by Hungarian physicist Pál Selényi. Carlson applied for and was awarded U.S. Patent 2,297,691 on October 6, 1942. Carlson's innovation combined electrostatic printing w...

aware
IMO it's a more accurate term for this type of printer, whether laser or LED.
MiG
MiG
well, there's accuracy in terms and there's every day usage... I'm guessing if it's your job you care a lot about #1 :)
I'm curious btw, do those wax block printers still exist, and do they still have a useful niche?
@MiG Solid ink has been discontinued for quite a few years. It's also pretty temperamental and can be a nightmare to deal with when they break down.
(as in the printers; Xerox still makes a limited amount of ink sticks for them)
MiG
MiG
19:01
a fellow student was a fan of those things, that was probably 20 years ago
I'd say these smaller printers are good for up to 500 pages a month. They do have headroom for more, but the cost per page can start to be an issue and you'd want a beefier model past that point.
MiG
MiG
Doubt I'd go beyond that unless I significantly change habits
the only thing I might be adding is a dedicated photo printer, haven't decided yet if I'll generate sufficient volume to warrant the ease of having one of those at home
I like printing physical copies and framing them, and I'm planning to change those out regularly - a physical printer in the house makes it very easy to do so
just wondering if there's anything out there that doesn't fade quickly
I have a small portable inkjet printer for that.
Canon PIXMA TR150, with the battery option installed.
MiG
MiG
and I assume the best ones are inkjets, and I'm worried I'll be printing so irregularly that the cartridges dry out
ah yes, I think you mentioned that one
It's normally meant for traveling businessmen and the like, but it just happens to be a decent photo printer.
MiG
MiG
19:08
I like the travel option as well, pretty handy at workshops and stuff
Easy to tuck away in my closet when not needed. I do need to pull it out every couple of weeks or so to avoid clogging.
MiG
MiG
do its photos fade after a little while or do they stay well for years?
Depends a lot on the printer and inks. The TR150 uses ChromaLife100 inks, which are rated for 100 years in dark storage or 30 years when framed behind glass.
Ditto for the Canon PIXMA G620 (model varies by region, e.g. G650 in Western Europe).
MegaTank CISS, six ChromaLife100 dye inks.
For any photos I print to hang on a wall, I'll print at least two copies, one to keep in an album. It's usually 8.5x11" US Letter with 0.5" margins, so the print spans 7.5x10". This also leaves a bit of room for me to sign the prints.
MiG
MiG
That TR150 sounds more and more attractive :)
Not the cheapest to run, though. Cartridges don't last all that long.
Also, be aware that the ink pads can fill up so the machine has a limited service life.
(like any inkjet without a waste cartridge)
MiG
MiG
19:15
I assume ink pads are a consumable?
It's not replaceable by the end user, so the printer is basically dead when it fills up. You'd have to call for service or send it in, which won't be cheap.
MiG
MiG
about 300 euro, not that much cheaper than my Brother
The G620 doesn't have that problem because it does have a waste cartridge.
MiG
MiG
oic
G650 where you live
(assuming Western Europe)
MiG
MiG
19:16
tbh, the portability for me would just be a gimmick... unless it's really compact (train travel so no trunk) it probably wouldn't even leave the house
@bwDraco bingo
(Canon maintenance cartridge MC-G02)
@MiG It's a lot smaller than you think.
(though fairly heavy)
MiG
MiG
it's not just weight that matters, size as well... I'm already carrying a lot in a shoulder bag, and bulk adds a lot
I recall these really tiny portable printers that could only print black and white on some sort of thermal paper... do those still exist?
Not too familiar with them.
MiG
MiG
so briefcase sized
compact is nice at home as well I suppose :)
It tucks away nicely in my closet.
Says it's got 127 impressions on it so far. Haven't used it much.
MiG
MiG
19:27
how's the colour quality for photos? Is it both good with deep blacks and vibrant colours?
It's pretty good.
Certainly no match for a dedicated photo printer, but it's actually decent.
MiG
MiG
gonna have a look at its big brother, that G650 :)
It doesn't seem to play nice with paper that's too thick, though. There can be a bit of banding.
(due to a bit of an oddity with paper feeding; larger sheets of thick photo paper may not feed well and could snap back a bit in the paper path)
Otherwise, very good photo quality.
The G650 is going to be far, far cheaper to run, though.
(crop of a scan of the nozzle check page from the TR150)
Part of how it gets good print quality is the fact that the color cartridge actually has a dye black, separate from the pigment black cartridge. This means the color cartridge has four inks, dye CMYK.
MiG
MiG
19:57
@bwDraco what kind of max thickness can you get out of it? I assume regular photograph thickness is okay?
I'd say so.
(I run Epson Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster through it FWIW)
