@HackToHell: right down to when i decided to rename my old laptop to use the name athena on my new one, to see the names Athena and Artemis in the newspaper ;p
@HackToHell: Oh, these are meant for me to find. Its probably the modern day equivalent of chess with mortals like in the old 70s myth movies ;p. That or i expect to find these things and its a fun case of my mind playing tricks on me.
I probably wouldn't have paid attention to the 20-30 things i notice a year if not.
Thing is though, looking for these things isn't my goal in life, and I'm not going to go around knocking on doors telling them of the wonders of Athena of the Geeks ;p
I posted a question a couple of weeks ago, but can't remember which SE site i posted it on, havn't had any notifications... And can't see it on the usual suspects...?
I have a lot of publisher files, and I'm tired of paying Microsoft to view them.
Is there a free desktop application that has a good reputation for converting these to other formats?
My search has so far led to:
Online tools that are too time consuming with upload/download times
Tools that co...
This question is coming back often, and the general answers are very often the same. In an objective to concentrate useful information in one place, here is a community wiki about it.
How can I convert this filetype to pdf?
This question will have two kind of answers:
The generic case, whi...
@KronoS It's probably necessary. I just got annoyed because SU, with the years, is quite a bit restrictive on what you can actually ask a question about. You have a problem on your computer? Great. Make sure it's not about a webapp. Or that it's not a smartphone. Or a gaming console. That you don't ask for shopping help. And that you don't want to ask what is the best way to do something.
Or we'll close it. Of course, if what remains is an obscure question which happens only to you, in your particular case, then we'll close it. Because it's too localized.
I was actually glad and surprised when I noticed that the base of regular users grew with time, finally. Because we had most difficulties to keep people around, at first.
@KronoS better now that they exist. It's not ideal, but at least there is a direct link. Before, there wasn't. Before, you were closing as "off-topic, you can't ask that here", and when the poor chap was asking you where he can ask that, you had nothing to answer him
What's weird in a way, is that at first, we excluded webapps, mostly because jeff said he didn't want it to be facebook support. Yet now we have a dedicated site for webapps
in my opinion, one "generic computer" Q&A would have been fine. Try explaining to your lambda user that his problem is with the computer or the webapp, when so much is done now on webapps
And I still think that SU was the best place to ask "I'm trying to do this. Which program can do it?"
but let's not get into that
It's like the cooking site disallowing recipes. It's annoying for the user, it's annoying for the moderators to maintain.
I get the point behind forbidding such "opinion" questions. But still.
