13:01
Are we still ment to blame @Sathya for anything that goes wrong anyway? :P
well yes.
it was the norm, remember?
Bob
Bob
ok, nothing
bleh
I wanted a notification avalanche! :P
heh, it is not happening here ;p
Man, that file icon is so much more awesome than the globe...
@Bob lol you wouldn't have wanted one.
it basically freezes chrome.
Bob
Bob
13:05
@OliverSalzburg mhmm, looks cleaner
Bob
Bob
ok, time to close Chrome :P
Okay, this Greenshot Imgur upload issue is seriously getting on my nerves
yeah, no more bugs ;p
13:23
@OliverSalzburg It worked well for me ;)
meh
Haha!
The font-rendering is still a bit off in some places...
@HackToHell It's giving me major trouble. I already asked Imgur if they're throttling me. I just read up on the limits of the API
The uploads take forever. And the upload dialog can not be cancelled. Which is extremely frustrating.
Sometimes the upload will work (after like 2 minutes of waiting), sometimes it ends with a 403 error.
So I went to the Picasa plugin, which only gives me an exception when uploading. But it has always done that :P
Now I finally set up the Dropbox plugin, which seems to provide some relief :P
There's dropbox then ;p
@jokerdino theoatmeal.com/quizzes/sound Does that drive you nuts too ?
@HackToHell i am in a study room with 30 people around me. will try it later in my room
@jokerdino lol ok
13:27
It will make them kill you :P
funnily, all of us are below 25
so, yeah. i will be murdered.
lol
I'm not
that should explain why S-K are good in starcraft ;p
13:39
oatmeal rocks ;)
so true ;p
@HackToHell :p
Religious folks hate oat meal for this exact reason ;p
So you are religious !! ;p
not really.
i swayed since reading that 10 questions article. let me find that one.
13:48
@jokerdino I am too much of a coward to be not religious and declare myself a Atheist
@HackToHell i am sort of in that limbo.
but i am more atheist than religious ;p but rather uncomfortably and awkwardly
I am too like that
lol
I'm religious, but not the PITA sort
Religion imo is a principle, something that makes us do right things
Once you know what's bad and what's good religion becomes pointless
i have my own thoughts.
religion is a way to prevent anarchy getting mainstream.
if everyone knows god is a lie, we will see crimes everywhere ;p
BRB
14:02
yeah, religion drives certain people towards doing proper things, others follow some priciples
And we use religion to cloak our fears and be more confident
lol
Well, i also believe in free will
Praying does not help you, your actions will
Well, a little of both
trust in god, but for god's sake tie up your damned horse.
Trust god not to screw up your life more ?
Our actions alone determine our path and a lil bit of luck(does praying make me lucky ??)
lol
well, it couldn't hurt, and it helps focus intent
Never hurts to have a friend ;p
14:07
even if he is imaginary :-)
well bah
Based on the definition of friend
i don't have problem in religion. i just hate those people who push it down my throat.
I do accept that prayer helps me focus on something,.
Imaginary friends are the best sort.
14:08
for eg, some people mock the idea of big bang. as if something just happened out of nowhere.
@jokerdino: I have a friend whose imaginary friend is batman ;p
and they ignore that god apparently got bored and created life one fine day.
@jokerdino I have absolutely no idea what(/who) to believe in these days
@JourneymanGeek heh
@jokerdino: Actually I like the gnostic view of that
that god did, and he's an asshole.
14:09
@JourneymanGeek I talk to myself, I am my imaginary friend ;p
@HackToHell: You don't really have to believe in anything you don't want to ;p
@JourneymanGeek xD
(comparitive religions is a bit of a hobby, though one i don't really take seriously ;p)
@HackToHell i can't tell you what you should believe. if i do, i become a hypocrite.
14:11
That's up to me to find out huh ?
sorta
I suspect it might be a looong time, before i believe in anything
@jokerdino: funny thing is, my belief is if $deity wants you to believe in something, you will without some idiotic human telling you to.
And the bastard can do his own dirty work, TYVM
@JourneymanGeek good point.
Reading Stephen Hawking makes you think everything is fake
14:12
you shouldn't be forced by someone because it is the right thing according to him.
someone commented that christians are almost atheists. atheists don't believe in 2780 gods and christians dont in 2779 gods.
(Then again, I have that wierd Athena thing, which counts as the first case despite being a hindu) ;p
@JourneymanGeek :P
Hinduism is very very tolerant.
The world is an confusing place
(basically, i find references to her everywhere I look)
Well, it is
Da Vinci Code :)
14:14
@HackToHell: religion dosen't make it any less confusing
Pagan shit !!
I love it :P
@JourneymanGeek ya
Hidden obelisks, pyramids wee conspiracy theories ;)
@HackToHell: right down to when i decided to rename my old laptop to use the name athena on my new one, to see the names Athena and Artemis in the newspaper ;p
Three words: Perception, Deception and Reality
They describe the world
@HackToHell: Oh, these are meant for me to find. Its probably the modern day equivalent of chess with mortals like in the old 70s myth movies ;p. That or i expect to find these things and its a fun case of my mind playing tricks on me.
One of my frnds and I drew them up, they kinda describe everything
14:17
And it amuses the HELL out of me if i was actually being stalked by a greek goddess.
Human nature, you find something new, you will see it everywhere
Brain relates stuff
seriously !!
14:18
I probably wouldn't have paid attention to the 20-30 things i notice a year if not.
Thing is though, looking for these things isn't my goal in life, and I'm not going to go around knocking on doors telling them of the wonders of Athena of the Geeks ;p
sorry, was eating a chocolate cake
The cake is a lie.
there you go
According to quantum mechanics
well if you ate it, there is no cake to observe
14:20
fair point ;p
phone call disturbs my elaborate theory and ruins my mood :/
abt quantum mechanics and cake ;p
lol
hmm i think i broke my laptop speaker
by playing the annoying sound at full sound.
ok it is still working
it is not that annoying.
Sathya believes in SQL.
lol
@Sathya Wut do ya believe in ?
Actually, I now think he believes in chicken.
And fucking beer
14:26
heh
@HackToHell believe what?
he is gonna kill himself
@jokerdino @HackToHell --->
> Super User ♦, PLSQL Dev, Mangalorean, Rum, Beer, Chip.in/tech2 mod, @preshit certified Lazyass, Bacon, Chicken Wings, Galaxy S2, Gaming sbhat.me
that's my twitter bio. And pretty accurate description of RL me.
14:27
pointless life ;P
And pretty boring too imo
wait you don't live in Bangalore?
or do you commute to Bangalore at least?
He's from mangalore
He's a Bengali.
that palace city
starts saying random stuff.
@HackToHell Mysore?
Jaipur?
14:29
@jokerdino oops wrong city
i meant mangalore
And I accidentally said abt mysore :D
Right.
@jokerdino dafuq
I'm not a Bengali.
3 mins ago, by jokerdino
starts saying random stuff.
IIRC he's konkani ;p
@jokerdino I live in Bangalore, hometown is M'lore
14:33
has no idea what to describe himself as ;p
@Sathya at least I now have a clearer idea of your background :P
@JourneymanGeek you are a geek.
@jokerdino: Here's the thing. I believe being geek is the purest expression of the culture of my birth
Hmm is that supposed to make sense?
2
Lol. Brahmin. We're supposed to love learning and knowledge ;p
aha. It is a little clearer now.
Supposedly.
14:37
@jokerdino k
Geek is not exactly good <.<, spending the day holed up with a computer makes you socially awkward.
Here's the deal. If you want to offend Sathya, call him a Bengali. :P
People look at geeks strangely
Or anything other than Mangalore / Bangalore
@jokerdino He gets offended at anything and everything
14:39
@HackToHell: I can be social. Dosen't mean i need to give a shit what people think.
ok before Sathya shows me the boot, let's move on. :P
i wouldn't want my edits rejected on SU..
And there's a difference between being a shutin (i was one) and being passionate about technology issues, and actually choosing to live ;)
I posted a question a couple of weeks ago, but can't remember which SE site i posted it on, havn't had any notifications... And can't see it on the usual suspects...?
@JourneymanGeek That's what i thought initially, but then people see you by your actions and not by what you are actually !!
@HackToHell: Its a matter of balance
14:40
go to your network profile and find t
@JourneymanGeek And I suck at it
Lol
I treat social interaction as a LARP ;p
I just get into charecter
found it! thanks :D
@JourneymanGeek Does not work for me ;p humans are complex !
I offend people far too easily :/
@HackToHell: Funny thing i once noticed, management practices for people are the same as the methods people use to train a dog.
14:44
lol
single most amazing thing i learnt in this school
"Good boy, Have a treat, thats a good little work drone"
Badges fall under that category :D
and rep and life in general too
lol
precisely!
And i find it easier to treat dogs with respect and as if they're intelligent to get them to do what i want
same as people ;p
good find :-)
but it doesn't work every time.
Corrective measures are needed at times.
@jokerdino: once again no different from people
BAD SALARIMAN NO BOOOZE FOR YOU
14:54
heh. so, we are no different from the creature in your gravatar.
precisely!
cats are different ';p
cats are evil.
I would prefer dogs over cats any day.
lazy bone^infinity == cat
@HackToHell: cats are.. unpredictable ;p
I miss ol one eye
14:57
Naw, you will never understand abt cats until you have one
@jokerdino why?
(big grizzled tomcat that lost his eye in a fight. Was the gentlest ball of fur ever)
@HackToHell one cat scratched me when I was young :p
Lovable fur ball
From that day, I started hating the entire cat family.
@jokerdino dog bit me when I was young xD
14:58
Sorta explains why I hate Mac OS X.
I hate dogs :P
@HackToHell fair enough.
But i do did like one dog, It was friends with my cat
Our house owner had a German Shepard.
lol
I have a furry room mate
also, most of the local cats currently don't give a shit about my dog ;p
14:59
@jokerdino big and scary
well, you sure you got a dog?
@HackToHell Yes. sorta.
Though, the dog was very afraid if it started raining like crazy.
@JourneymanGeek my cat was so cocky it used to sit in front of a huge dog !!
Lightning and thunder will scare the shit out of it
lol
@HackToHell: local cats KNOW my dog won't chase it
Once, it ran into our house and scared US.
15:01
@JourneymanGeek LOL
my cat loves getting wet and making my bed muddy
It goes nuts when it rains, running in and out of the house
Painful memories
@HackToHell haha
Why cats do not give a shit abt dogs :P
and btw all geeks have cats !!
slhck, Oliver, grawity have a cat
o.O
well, linus has a cat.
15:05
lol
love u linux
lol
amusingly, wierd cultural practices aside, i cannot legally own a cat ;p
oh noes
oh yeah.
@JourneymanGeek why?
15:09
:P
we arn't allowed cats in public housing, which most of us live un
@KronoS tell me you too have a cat pleeezzzz
dogs must be an approved breed ;p
mine is, allegedly ;p
no pics.
@HackToHell unfortunately yes... two of them
@JourneymanGeek oh got it
15:11
@KronoS did you say unfortunately ??
@HackToHell yes... yes I did
@Sathya what pics ?
respective pets
Is going to call Liam Neeson to slay @KronoS the evil titan who hates cats
15:12
@HackToHell I don't hate them... just prefer a German Shepard to them
XD
going to see my cousin's giant german shep puppy soon ;p
@KronoS Then get one, cats co-exist with dogs
@JourneymanGeek Great
(and two random mutts, and a 'jaathi' mutt)
15:20
@Sathya - that question is about to be closed as off-topic:

Q: Convert Publisher files to .doc or .pdf without buying MS Publisher

Eric WilsonI have a lot of publisher files, and I'm tired of paying Microsoft to view them. Is there a free desktop application that has a good reputation for converting these to other formats? My search has so far led to: Online tools that are too time consuming with upload/download times Tools that co...

But in general, it's probably better to close as duplicate of this

Q: How do I convert this filetype to pdf?

GnoupiThis question is coming back often, and the general answers are very often the same. In an objective to concentrate useful information in one place, here is a community wiki about it. How can I convert this filetype to pdf? This question will have two kind of answers: The generic case, whi...

was about to add a close vote, but since it has 4 as off-topic, it would ignore the duplicate
@Gnoupi haven't seen you if forever.
feel free to do whatever you prefer with it, though, just reporting that it looks similar
@KronoS yeah, I come back a bit recently to review stuff. And vote for elections
actually voted for you and not oliver, along with the two other elected ones, btw
@Gnoupi oh nice. You've been missed.
@Gnoupi why thank you. Oliver is a great mod however. I'm happy with the results
actually tried to get more involved a few months back, but I hit the usual wall of annoyment. But it's hard to stay far for long
(example of the wall of annoyment, this talk: meta.superuser.com/questions/4743/… )
@Gnoupi lol. I actually had to slow down my participation here due to school. Pulling multiple all nighters wasn't fun
15:26
Yeah, I know the feeling. It's for a similar reason that I quit when I was moderator.
lol, ditto here
putting too much time into it
so now, i just take it easy, review from time to time
and don't get involved in talks with rand or tom
and it's working good so far
I do my OQAD. I need to vote more tho
XD
15:29
@Gnoupi It's quite interesting to see all the different personalities around here.
rand and tom. Hmm
lol
I've never dealt with random much
tom's ok, other than having occational terrier moments ;p
I wouldn't have known either.
I've dealt with both. They have differing approaches to things, but that's ok, and necessary at times.
@KronoS My girlfriend and I are getting a dog in a couple of weeks... No cats here (she hates them - but i love both!)
Highlight of the Olympics today: youtube.com/watch?v=XwH5y5lPvvk
15:36
Well I should get back to work. It's great to see you back @Gnoupi.
poor kiwis, without their marmite
Marmageddon lol
@KronoS It's probably necessary. I just got annoyed because SU, with the years, is quite a bit restrictive on what you can actually ask a question about. You have a problem on your computer? Great. Make sure it's not about a webapp. Or that it's not a smartphone. Or a gaming console. That you don't ask for shopping help. And that you don't want to ask what is the best way to do something.
Or we'll close it. Of course, if what remains is an obscure question which happens only to you, in your particular case, then we'll close it. Because it's too localized.
@Gnoupi I've been feeling that more and more recently... And i've not even been here very long lol
@HaydnWVN You are not alone.
15:42
@HaydnWVN Yeah, I was here at the beginning when we were given no scope besides "computer software and hardware"
And don't forget duplicates of even questions only remotely similar are closed too
Just earlier, I was going through meta.math.se and it was quite shocking.
not to mention questions which are not worded correctly because the user didn't know how. Which get closed as "not a real question".
don't get me wrong, it was necessary to set a scope for the site, as the beginning was a bit "anything goes which was off-topic on SO"
But reaching the point where a Q&A site targeting end-users is that restrictive and not welcoming, it's a shame
@Gnoupi How do you handle the fact that a lot of what used to be on-topic here, is now scoped more specifically on other SE sites?
I was actually glad and surprised when I noticed that the base of regular users grew with time, finally. Because we had most difficulties to keep people around, at first.
@KronoS better now that they exist. It's not ideal, but at least there is a direct link. Before, there wasn't. Before, you were closing as "off-topic, you can't ask that here", and when the poor chap was asking you where he can ask that, you had nothing to answer him
15:47
Don't get me wrong, we sometimes get into a mode of cleanup and can be a bit... unforgiving of new users.
The first Area 51 sites came from what was off-topic on SU
gaming and webapps
Webapps, gaming, smartphones
(apple and android)
oh the gadgets
@jokerdino webapps weren't always considered that off-topic here.
15:49
@KronoS I am saying the sites that came off Area 51
my best answer was for a long time to a gmail question
@KronoS neither smartphones: meta.superuser.com/questions/417/…
@Gnoupi we've definitely changed in scope over the years.
What's weird in a way, is that at first, we excluded webapps, mostly because jeff said he didn't want it to be facebook support. Yet now we have a dedicated site for webapps
there also is a facebook.so
in my opinion, one "generic computer" Q&A would have been fine. Try explaining to your lambda user that his problem is with the computer or the webapp, when so much is done now on webapps
And I still think that SU was the best place to ask "I'm trying to do this. Which program can do it?"
but let's not get into that
It's like the cooking site disallowing recipes. It's annoying for the user, it's annoying for the moderators to maintain.
I get the point behind forbidding such "opinion" questions. But still.
15:57
well, i can see how much you actually liked the site.
and it's time for me to come back home. So cya
