Q: Question of the Week #39

KronoSNow we're into post #39 of the "Top Question" of Super User in the Super User blog. Please post and vote for your favorite question for this week. Please post any questions that you feel is of worth and the reason why. Try not to promote your own questions or answers for publicity's sake. We ar...

@SuperUser who gets this ping?
Can't believe that Super User does not even have a SU profile...
Its a bot
I don't seem to think it needs one ;p
@JourneymanGeek I know its a bot, but still, there are so many users named super user on SU, just make one more for this. Or use community. sigh its a good sign that this is the largest thing bothering me now
lol
AU calls theirs The Interrupter
Random should have named ours
02:07
Chat bots aren't users.
Well, I for one support marriage between two bots if that is what they so desire
It's Gareth!
Where in the world are you today?
Still Beijing (so much rain today)
Probably the US by the end of the month
Cool. Where in the US are you headed?
Seattle
So still lots of rain ;)
02:13
Oooh! I'm not that far away from Seattle. If you ever head down to Oregon, let me know!
I've got to go. Hope to catch up with you soon @Gareth
@nhinkle Yeah sure, see you. Will probably be in Portland a fair bit
@Gareth: OMGLITTLEROBOTBABIES
haha
hmm
wonders if there's a superuser birthday contest this year
02:32
@JourneymanGeek What is a SU bday contest about?
@JourneymanGeek Cool
XD. If its about the same period as last year there's a good chance i'll be in india while it happens ;p
02:50
Oh, today is a good day, not had to flag ONE late answer.
03:02
So a 32GB mSata that comes with a Dell Laptop should show up as a 32GB drive in My Computer... right?
@ekaj I just realized what your name means. It's "jake" backward, isn't it?
yup =p
lol
yup
unless its set up as a cache drive
In computing, Smart Response Technology (SRT) (pre-launch name SSD Caching) is a proprietary caching mechanism introduced in 2011 by Intel for their Z68 chipset (for the Sandy Bridge–series processors), which allows a SATA solid-state drive (SSD) to function as cache for a (conventional, magnetic) hard disk drive. SRT is managed by Intel Rapid Storage Technology software version 10.5 or later, and implemented in its device driver and the Z68 motherboard's firmware (option ROM). It is available only when the (integrated) disk controller is configured in RAID mode (but not AHCI or IDE ...
Dells customer service / in general has been making me mad lately. I ordered a laptop on a Saturday, and they immediately took 2100 out of my account. BUT it was the wrong laptop. So I tried to call, but I couldn't get ahold of anyone because that department was closed on the weekend (school discount deal thing)..
so I called Monday. And they cancelled my order. Then I got the laptop in the mail on like.. Wednesday, and now I have to mail it back, and I'm supposed to get my other laptop tomorrow.
03:07
ouch
Bob
Bob
@ekaj At least that was fast
Anyways, the laptop they DID send me only had an 8GB ssd.. and I ordered a 32gb drive. I'm hoping they don't screw up this next computer.
Bob
Bob
Bit weird though
@ekaj o.O
I admit, ordering the wrong laptop the first time was my mistake.. but the wrong order even had the wrong stuff in it, if that makes sense.
and @JourneymanGeek thanks for that link
Blah, i should write something on chrome remote at some point ;p
03:31
Why would this processor ( ark.intel.com/products/67356 ) retail at 378 if it's only 2.1GHz and 4 cores? I've been looking around but I can't seem to find the answer. Yes, it has 4 cores, but so do a few like $250 processors.. and they're faster than 2.3GHz (3.1 max)
03:42
hmm
/me has no idea
laptop processor pricing is something i never had to futz around with
I have no idea either, unless the jump from 32 to 22 nm is the main difference.
That was Dell's "best processor" when I went to piece my comp together - their customization options suck now.
not very likely
The place I was looking that was the only 3rd gen i7
If I wanted a 3rd gen i7 with a 15"-16" screen (XPS laptop) that's the only suggestion I got
04:00
Oh lookee we broke the 3K barrier for LQ!
deaf person with a smart phone? cool
@ekaj are you kidding?
deaf people use smartphones because they text email so much
yeah, I know =p I meant the interpretation of the sign language part
I'd kill for that.
and so would many people I know.
04:11
@studiohack you sign?
@soandos a bit. I'm profoundly deaf. like 90% plus
didn't know, sorry. I know a bunch of people that sign, but aren't deaf
@soandos why are you apologizing?
@studiohack, kinda surprised I didn't know
@soandos you shouldn't be. I'm very private online :)
and no worries, how would you know? and signing is awesome, do you know some?
04:13
very little
have a few friends with epilepsy that sign though
@soandos How come?
@Paul for some reason we get along ;)
no idea though, delayed speech or something, not really sure
@soandos :) I meant why to they sign, is the epilepsy impacting their speech somehow.
I'd like to learn how to sign some time..
They speak normally now, but I don't think that was always the case
04:15
Yeah me too
I learnt the sign alphabet same way I learnt the phonetic alphabet
just takes a few minutes
yeah, practice fingerspelling in the checkout line, spell whatever words you see, you'll be super fast in no time
good place to start @Paul, @ekaj, @soandos
The paperclip popped up when I said I'd like to learn how to sign...
@studiohack, ill start :)
@studiohack Isn't that just a small part of signing though?
04:17
@ekaj meet clippy
I hated him from office. =p
@Paul yes, but it's a start :) there are some really cool online dictionaries and places to learn
AWESOME and FREE: lifeprint.com
@studiohack I imagine there is an app for that
@studiohack I'll try that some time - I'm trying to associate most things I see recently with Spanish words, if I can remember the correct ones
04:18
@studiohack How widely used is ASL vs BSL or the other SLs - do they have commonalities?
@Paul I would imagine it depends where...
I sign ASL but there are some small dialects
@studiohack I think there was a study on accents for signing
@soandos COOL!
New Mexico School for the Deaf offers an Immersion Week - you hearing people wear earplugs and learn sign from authentic deaf teachers
(scroll down a bit)
04:22
reminds me of a joke:
mime radio: all mime, all the time
@studiohack Looks like BSL and ASL are mutually unintelligable
opisthenar, I now know your name
Looks like there is an "Auslan" too - Australian Sign Languge, but based on BSL
@Paul, in antro, I learnt about one with no known roots in israel
@soandos Wikipedia says there is mention by plato of deaf groups using sign language
04:33
Not sure it was a full language though
04:47
reads up
@studiohack In that aspect, they arn't all that different from everyone else ;p
05:25
@WilliamHilsum tbh no, I just got the ones I needed
CMC
CMC
hello
anybody here know virtualbox networking?
@CMC what about it
CMC
CMC
I'm trying to setup Bridged Networking
uh
why is there a clippy?
anyway
I have a Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop x64 Guest
and a Windows 7 x64 Host
@CMC heh, it's an easter egg.
2
CMC
CMC
huh
I can get the basic functionality of the Bridged Networking working
but I don't have an internet connection
to elaborate,
if I ping google.com, it resolves and pings correctly
but if I try to telnet google.com 80
it times out
05:42
@CMC If you are using bridged, the ip addresses of guest and host should be in the same subnet, and both should have the same default gateway. Is that the case?
CMC
CMC
The host's Subnet is 255.255.255.0 and the Default Gateway is 192.168.1.1 (the router)
The guest's Subnet is the same
I'm not finding the guest's gateway
ah
it's the same as well, so yes, @Paul it's the same
@CMC is this virtualbox
CMC
CMC
What do you mean by that?
@CMC "guest" usually refers to a virtual machine, so I was asking if you were using virtualbox to host the virtual machine
CMC
CMC
yes
that's why I started with "anybody here know virtualbox networking?"
05:51
Yeah I didn't see that comment. Ok, just eliminating the basics - if you ping the ubuntu box from windows, then do arp -a you'll see the mac address that Windows thinks ubuntu has. Can you confirm it is different to the Windows mac ipconfig /all and the same as what Ubuntu thinks its own mac is ifconfig
CMC
CMC
06:03
So in arp -a do I look for what the ip address of the guest is?
@CMC yeah
CMC
CMC
and then HWaddr from ifconfig?
Yeah - they should match
CMC
CMC
if so, then yes, they are identical.
Cool, and they are different to ipconfig /all on Windows?
@CMC So my best guess would be that the Windows firewall (or a third party firewall) is seeing traffic pass across the Windows nic that doesn't have a source or destination IP that belongs to the Windows box, and blocking the traffic
CMC
CMC
06:13
The guest's mac address differs from all other networked devices I can see
I tried running Wireshark
to see what packets actually get out of the guest
If I try to telnet to, say, my host
I can see the TCP packet
But if I try telnet google.com 80, nothing shows up in Wireshark
I've run the test enough times in Wireshark to know that I'm not making a typo in the filter
@CMC Like it doesn't get out of the host. I would still eliminate any firewalls on Windows as a cause
Do you happen to have tcpdump install in the guest?

Most of us don’t give our keyboards (or mice, I suppose) a second thought. Most of my keyboards tended to be budget logitechs, which while decent lack a certain something.

I preferred the ThinkPad keyboards on my laptops, but when I need to, and tend to write at a single sitting, essays that are a few thousand words long, I needed something better.

If you want a shorter version of this whole blog post,I’d advice that you look at the layout(ergonomic vs standard, and number of keys), the switch type ( membrane/scissor vs mechanical (switch or buckling spring) and Key style (full sized concave, low profile or flat). …

CMC
CMC
hmmm
looks like it
but I don't know how to use it
Bob
Bob
@Clippy @JourneymanGeek Nice post.
There's a broken image link (the one to archive.org)... and there's a little typo just above that :P
Perhaps rehost all images on stack.imgur.com?
buckling spring image broken too
annd the last word(s) is/are cut off :P
otherwise, a very informative blog post! :D
06:31
lol
I need to see about that
@CMC Did I miss an answer about the firewall on Windows?
CMC
CMC
@Paul Sorry, I'm multitasking a bunch
I'm trying to figure out how to temporarily disable the firewall on Avast
CMC
CMC
07:01
Alright, figured it out. And that was the problem...I'll have to figure out how to unblock it.
@CMC Cool
@Clippy Why do you have a pingable name Clippy?
Oh
I see
Bob
Bob
lol
Clippy wrote @JourneymanGeek's blog entry for him
Bob
Bob
xD
I got a good chunk of the errors fixed
but the video is still out
will need to consult smarter people on this ;p
This is rather embarassing
Bob
Bob
07:05
...wha?
Clippy is user # -42
Blog Bot is -41
The Interrupter from AU is -40...
There's a Dice Service bot?!
Oh, it's for a RPG chatroom
hm... how does this bot numbering system work?
@Bob: fixed the images on my local copy. Might just drop the video of typing if that is what's causing the problems ><
takes a few minions out back and shoots em.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek There's a video? o.O
lol yes!
It got cut off
Bob
Bob
I see a gif that isn't displaying
Oh, video at the end?
Lucky for me my NEXT planned blog post(s) are all original content, and should be easier to work with than this.
Ya, i think i got that fixed
Bob
Bob
07:10
lol
good job
hm
the layout images look very familiar
wikipedia
Bob
Bob
ah
they should have attribution if i didn't fuck that up too
Bob
Bob
must've searched them at some point
source is missing for the layout images
I'll add that in
At one point the entire post was invisible
Bob
Bob
07:11
o.O
Also, the vertical keyboard
Source</spane3E
oddly enough, the actual HTML is <span style="font-size: xx-small;">Source&lt;/spane3E</span>
redid all that
Bob
Bob
And Microsoft natural keyboard Pro source
XD
WILL FIX
Bob
Bob
source is highlighted as a link, but my cursor stays in the caret/select text mode when hovering (it's unclickable)
Bob
Bob
07:14
it's in a <a> tag (not <a href="http://....">)
you need new minions :P
This is what i'm looking at now dl.dropbox.com/u/1111219/test.html
I don't see that error anywhere on my copies of it ;p
which is SLIGHTLY miffing, since there's multiple possible sources of errors ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek That seems fine
> significantly faster, and with Less strain.
random capitalisation just bugs me for some reason :P
lol
AAAH SPELLING ERRORS
This, unfortunately is entirely my fault.
07:31
@JourneymanGeek Broken image link in your blog post :P
@slhck: lots of broken things in the blog post.
^ The thing above is what you should be seeing. There were some issues probably caused by me wierd workflow - future blog stuff should work better when i actually know what the hell I am doing ><
haha, it's not too bad
Lessons learnt. Don't copy paste crap from word to live writer and expect it to work. It will eat your children and cause you extenticial dispair.
Bob
Bob
well, at least you didn't save as HTML from Word (shudder)
lol
07:34
naw
and in future most of my posts will be entirely in WLL, and such, so it should be less of a pain in the tail.
I prefer to write them in Markdown and then convert to HTML, then paste into Wordpress
... wait. I can work directly in WP can't I?
headesks
That might be an option as well ;p
haha.. uhmm. yeah you can
but warn you, the normal editor is crap
lol
Which is probably WLL was suggested to me... ;p
and conversion from HTML also has its issues
07:40
Honestly I'm entirely clueless about most of this at the moment ;p
(gimme a damned stack exchange markdown based blog system plz!)
It's about time, yeah. 6 to 8 months is almost over :P
lol
The next thing i want to do should be fun - documenting a computer build ;p
@JourneymanGeek Building right now?
@slhck: end august ;p
nice!
07:50
Its a pain in the rear building a system on 300 dollars of spending money ;p
Haha.. aww. Never gotten into the excitement of building something myself.
Except for plugging a CPU, HDD and memory into a barebone, if that counts.
Close enough, thats the basics ;p
And I even managed to improperly apply thermal paste there
pretty much thats what the entry will cover, since i can't afford a video card yet ;p
Plus, the fan didn't really stick well on the CPU, so the PC shut down after a minute again
07:53
oh, going stock cooling, intel pre-applices paste
That was an AMD back then
Was thinking of watercooling, but that might be a future upgrade
Never understood the whole water cooling thing
But I have a Mac, so what would I know :P
In my case, the place i live in is dusty, and it would be easier to clean ;p
Trudat
07:55
(since i can easily remove the radiator assembly, more than i can remove the HS for cleaning)
but as things are, its not a priority - I think the video card and SSD should come first ;p
and then its a toss up between that and upgrading my monitor ;p
SSD ftw
At least that's from my personal experience
Oy halloey! @slhck @JourneymanGeek
@slhck: oh, its definately on my want list
Halloumi @Boris_yo? :)
07:59
(lets see, nice case, wait 4 months, mobo/proc/videocard, wait 2 months video card + some buffer, then SSD... so i'm building my system over 6 months ;p)
@slhck Saw my pics?
Only 10 this week as limit.
Huh?
Oh, wasn't on chat this much in the last few days
I ma talking this:

http://500px.com/Boris_yo
@slhck You gotta agree that introduction looked like it was phishing email from spammer?
Haha, no, it wasn't too bad :)
@slhck So how's been going for you? We have SSDs raised in prices again... So i'm waiting for a good moment. Thought RAM is everything... Wrong.
Need SSD like LSD because in important and urgent situations when I must open my laptop and check something fast, I get BOTTLENECK with 8GB of RAM even!
08:03
lol
Is there SU section where I can find experts on Facebook? I need to know how to check whether specific person unfriended me "silently".
But I don't think there's any way you can tell for sure
So if friend unfriends me he just disappears from my "Friends List"?
exactly
08:56
heh.. see the first comment
how right he was
Bob
Bob
@slhck Eh, it's SE. I'm continually amazed by the rankings on Google.
@Bob And I'm really glad they are ranked so high.
But I'll keep this post as a reference whenever someone posts "Google it" as an answer :P
@Sathya nice!
@Sathya \o/
09:03
woah, my markdown editor has 37 watching already
woohoo
needs to follow that one now.
@slhck link?
Done.
@slhck nice
09:05
@Sathya that is for wordpress.org isn't it?
i want one for the wordpress.com blog :(
@jokerdino yes, all plugins are for wp.org
09:36
Ugh.. some bastards stole the emblem from my car.
Bob
Bob
wtf
@slhck wow
I mean, it's not like I drive a Mercedes or Jaguar >_>
09:55
@slhck VW Polo?
@HaydnWVN Nope, a Skoda Octavia
Hmm, I would be glad I still have the car.
I don't know if the brand is too common outside middle Europe :P
@slhck Damn, same rear wiper as a polo lol
09:56
You get them in the UK, good car, but gimmie my Audi any day ;)
@HaydnWVN They belong to the VW group so same spare parts etc
Are we misunderstanding what is a too minor edit?
@jokerdino Consensus seems to be that you should make edits really substantial before you get to 2k. After that: Do whatever you want, like in this rejected edit.
I would have approved it though, tbh
Quite petty, but annoying to reject it :'(
I would have rejected it as too minor if I didn't fix all other issues. But in this post, there are nothing much to fix though.
09:58
@slhck seen few Skodas here in India
@jokerdino The post is crap anyway, doesn't solve the problem
well then remove it.
ok it has been removed
@jokerdino that's a bit harsh
@Sathya Really? Haha, I thought VW, Audi, BMW and Mercedes were the only European cars that are sold pretty much everywhere.
I have seen / heard Skoda as well.
