lol. Somebody tried to deface one of my posts.

tbf makes more sense.... ;)

@gparyani What laptop? A ThinkPad or some other business-class machine?
Hmm. A Mac of some sort?

Back in the day I had a computer where pressing ctrl key made a circle around the cursor. This was helpful if you lost track of where the cursor was on the screen. Anything like that with Windows 10?

yes
in the same mouse control panel as in win7
start -> type mouse -> click additional mouse settings -> pointer options

12:28 AM
Thank you!

@bwDraco An HP Compaq (aka Business Notebook).

Huh. That sounds really old.

It was a fairly low-end machine, even for the time. Had the slowest CPU in its class (a Celeron 1.3 GHz Dothan) and I replaced with the fastest CPU (a Pentium M 780 2.26 GHz)

Before HP got rid of the Compaq brand and started to use Elite branding.
Huh.

I also have a newer Compaq machine that's higher-end, with an AMD Turion 64 2.0 GHz

Basically, I've been going through every computer in the house, and seeing if I can upgrade them and continue to run them as modern systems.

I got inspired by a YouTuber who in a past life used to buy 10-year-old iBooks, refurbish them to modern specifications, and sell them.

What kind of power adapter? 7.4mm, or is it even older?

It's a barrel connector; don't know the size
I had previously ordered it, but the eBay seller apparently misplaced it and gave me a refund, so I had to re-order it

Current HP laptops use a 4.5mm barrel connector. Older systems use a 7.4mm connector; a dongle is available to allow use of newer power adapters with older machines.
IIRC some HP machines of even older vintage use yet a different-size barrel connector.

Oh, wait, I remember, this one is older, it uses a supply different from 7.4 mm
I do have another, newer HP Compaq machine and a much newer HP Pavilion machine that both use the 7.4 mm plug
I didn't know they were standardized; I thought it was merely a coincidence that they shared the same plug

@gparyani The same power adapter (as long as the wattage is sufficient) will work on both machines.

@bwDraco Yeah, you're right about that. I remember when I used to use that newer Compaq machine that it would prompt me to "plug in a higher-capacity adapter for better performance".

12:39 AM
Had to pull out my old dongles. My first laptop was an HP system that used the 7.4mm connector. At one point, I had to replace the power adapter; the new adapter came with a dongle that allows it to be used on even older machines with a 4.8mm connector.
> For full performance, connect a higher capacity power adapter
(as it would appear on a newer HP system)

I have an HP Pavilion laptop from 2001 that uses an even older connector

4.8mm?

It's 19V 3.16A
5.5mm

Wow. That's a legacy connector I've never seen.
Bottom is a 4.5mm to 7.4mm dongle supplied with a retail HP 65W adapter (current). Top is a 7.4mm to 4.8mm adapter supplied with a (very) old retail HP 85W (or 90W, not sure) adapter.
...it's 90W.

My old laptop had a 90W adapter but never pulled more than 75W under load.
@gparyani AMD K8L?

12:58 AM
@bwDraco Turion 64 X2 TL-60

Yup, that's K8L.

Though I don't know if it's the 90 nm version or the 65 nm version
How can you tell, and are they both cross-compatible?

My first laptop had a Phenom II N930 (4C Champlain / K10 @ 2.0 GHz; 2 MB L2$; 45nm, 35W TDP).

@gparyani at some point, compaq was HP, but using the compaq branding
@bertieb so one is compensating for something and the other....

@Aibobot I know. They made machines under the Compaq brand name (directly) until 2013, but also used the name "HP Compaq" for their business notebooks. (And the two laptops I was talking about were HP Compaq ones.)

so same parts/charger
