10:00 PM
Tempted to get this one @nhinkle

@IvoFlipse What a good design of the backside! The back side used luxurious black color, the high quality stand looks more dignifying.

@DanielBeck lol

looks like that one has a VGA, too?

@nhinkle I think they're all dual DVI, that's what they moan about

10:03 PM
this is full of win

@nhinkle So, you're essentially ordering 4 bright pixels.

@DanielBeck yep!

But yeah I see a VGA too

So... no DisplayPort?

But in another shot its gone

10:09 PM
We make the monitor's pride higher with unique design and the highest quality. you can expect that. Yamakasi's ride to the world is never going to stop.
...?
Well, good luck @IvoFlipse, you're going to need it.

@DanielBeck welcome to buying Asian stuff on eBay

@DanielBeck I'm doing it for all the Super Users out there!

stupid user question time: what's a gpu?

@IvoFlipse Riiight.

@Aarthi Graphics Processing Unit
basically the video card/graphics card

10:10 PM
wait a graphics card?
oh!

it makes the pretty things pretty, and go fast

EXCELLENT.
Nvidia Geoforce, right?

you need a good one to run games or have lots of monitors or enormous monitors

OR ALL THREE?

Can't tell the difference between two models though

10:11 PM
:P

@Aarthi the two major brands are Nvidia GeForce and ATI/AMD Radeon

@nhinkle the latter is a t-bridge, right?

AMD would allow for eye-finity, my stupid Nvidia one only allows 2 monitors

Intel motherboards and processors almost always come with an embedded GPU (called "integrated graphics"), but they are a lot less powerful, because instead of having a dedicated processing unit for graphics, the CPU calculates the graphics. And CPU's aren't optimized for graphics. So for all practical purposes, Intel doesn't make video cards that we care about.
@Aarthi I have no idea what you're talking about or what a t-bridge is, sorry.

10:12 PM
hrm.
and evne i know integrated graphics suck glares at sony

sony?

my vaio is an intel core 2 duo

to be fair, the integrated graphics on a new Intel Ivy Bridge processor are pretty good - on par with lower end dedicated GPUs from a few years ago. But you wouldn't give that out as a prize, because it's not separate from the CPU
Ohh. Yeah... stupid sony!
@Aarthi you want to buy a newer, nicer laptop? With a brand-new Core i5? And a backlit keyboard for optimal late-night internet cat picture watching?

suspicious
yes....
i do, actually.
my current laptop isn't cutting it.

Well, I'm selling a laptop right now.

10:17 PM
oh really. how fortuitous

Strange can't tell whether I should or should not get tempered glass

specs are as such:
click ---> it won't expand and is too long to fit in the quote thingy chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/5510325#5510325
@IvoFlipse glancing at that forum post you sent me to, some people had issues with some dust behind the glass. YMMV.

@nhinkle Yeah, hard to choose

They claimed the glass had little to no impact on the quality of the display shrug
@Aarthi I'm willing to offer a special discount for people who have been very helpful to me before. Like you!

ooo temptation!
but...
matte screen.
hiss

10:20 PM
No clue, reading on ebay is like reading Korean @Aarthi

@Aarthi that's the good kind. The non-reflective kind that you can see in sunlight.

@nhinkle but my thinkpad is matte

(HP actually just says "anti-glare screen")

and this is the worst kind of screen ever.
i hate this nonsense
my vaio fails on every level

@Aarthi orly? what is nonsensical about it? I wish I had a matte screen

10:21 PM
but it has a glossy screen
@nhinkle it's awful because it's "antiglare" but that's always a lie
images are cripser on a glossy screen
the screen itself is brighter

That is true, but I've read reviews that say the display on this laptop is rather nice, compared to most similarly priced laptops.

hmm. i'll consider it? Give me a couple days. :)

Sure thing. If I don't get any offers from people I know by Monday or Tuesday, I'm going to put it up on eBay.

cool

@aarthi which thinkpad do you have?
the reason i'm selling it is because i'd rather have a thinkpad :P

10:24 PM
ARGH, I have no way to compare these things

@nhinkle Thinkpad T250
i hate this thing.

@Aarthi hm. What do you dislike about it?

@nhinkle everything. no in all seriousness: it's not a large screen, it's matte and the brightness is low; the keys are uncomfortable, the speakers are tinny, the graphics card is pretty crummy, and the resolution is 900x768, which I haven't had since 2005.

900? you sure it's not 1024x768?
well no wonder you don't like "matte displays", you're using a shitty one it sounds like!

10:35 PM
1366x768
my current resolution
again, I haven't used anything smaller than 1200x800 in years

Ah. Yeah that's what my old laptop had, which is disgusting. 1600x900 and up are so much nicer
how old is the T250? google turns up... not much at all

eek sorry -- T520

there's a lot of nerd rage over the proliferation of 1366x768

it's basically the worst display ever
i hate it sfm
i can't even begin to tell you.
my dell monitors are matte and I don't hate them., so

Ohh. That's the older and larger version of the one I'm looking at (T430). Except I'm planning to get the 1600x900 screen, because I loathe 1366x768. What else besides the screen do you hate?

10:37 PM
@nhinkle tinny speakers, shitty gpu, weirdo speaker/mic input, dark display

Huh. So, not a thinkpad fan. This is your work laptop I take it?

yeah
my home laptop is a Vaio VGN-C290
my serial number is 1
the optical drive died years ago
the hard disk has spontaneously stopped working twice

LOL. If your serial number were actually 1, that would be hysterical.

@IvoFlipse DEAR VALUE CUSTOMER

10:39 PM
@nhinkle no i'm serious -- serial number is 3000001 meaning first model off the thing apparently

@Aarthi O_o wow
Sounds like it's time for an upgrade.

@nhinkle but i bought this in 2007
it can go one more year!

@nhinkle I hope they know where to ship it :P

but no it's totally time for an upgrade, @nhinkle. i'm thinking.....ultrabook.
i want a PC laptop that's mac-comparable. wanna play games

If tinny audio is a concern, you should consider the one I have for sale. It's specifically designed for the audio, and has like, a subwoofer and stuff.

10:41 PM
heh
DA BASS.

Well ultrabook and games isn't likely to work out super well. It's kind of a one or the other proposition there. On the other hand, you could just get a macbook pro, and install Windows on it, if you like the whole mac look thing.

:( My phone won't detect it's plugged in now

Except then you have to pay for a mac, which is the biggest downside.

@nhinkle i just want the shiny laptop that can handle roller coaster tycoon and portal 2 and play my movies and Hulu

@nhinkle Was just about to say the same

10:43 PM
@Aarthi are your movies on disks? Most ultrabooks don't have optical drives. You might want to look sort of in between ultrabooks and regular laptops.

dammit

Portal 2 isn't going to blaze on an ultrabookm but you'll get OK framerates on a lightish normal laptop.

i just want everything, okay
i want the best computer.
:P

Lol, what's your price range for "best computer"? :P

like up to 1300 probably.
i should just build a box and buy a dell monitor

10:46 PM
@Aarthi No buy one of those Korean ones I just ordered

...lulz

Posting "incomplete content" is against our TOS. Interesting

@OliverSalzburg Interesting indeed

Well, from what you've said about the sorts of things you like, I do think you might like the laptop I have for sale. It's relatively light (I had an older version of the same model and could hold it in one hand comfortably), has reasonable battery life, would be able to play games OK, has very good audio, a high-resolution screen, backlit keyboard, and includes an SSD for speediness, a regular hard drive for storing lots of stuff, and an optical drive for all your fun DVDs and games and stuff.
Anyhow, I'll let you think about it like you said :P
@OliverSalzburg orly? Huh
I wonder what that means

4. Restrictions, end of second paragraph. Maybe I'm misinterpreting it :) stackexchange.com/legal/terms-of-service

10:51 PM
So FGITW is actually against the TOS...

apparently.

@nhinkle Your laptop is pretty powerful and the parts seem of decent quality

@nhinkle cool. :P will let you know

"Subscriber agrees to notify Stack Exchange immediately of any actual or suspected loss, theft, or unauthorized use of Subscriber’s account or password." O___O

see y'all later tonight; i'm going home i think. :)

10:55 PM
@OliverSalzburg that kinda makes sense
'night @Aarthi

/waves

@nhinkle Yeah, but I was unaware of it and thought it was a bit curious

11:53 PM
@IvoFlipse the catscratches?
