@WilliamHilsum just so you know, you sent me a dollar & 50 cents over what I paid..
@Sathya Do you know what Tom was talking about with the mass account user?
12 hours ago, by Mahnax
At last count, he's had over 60 accounts.
I assume he's talking about that..
@Sathya Thanks. I was reading bits of that, but was missing the big picture
I need to spam my question till I can post a bounty on it

Q: Shared home folders between operating systems

LukeAfter my hard drive calved yet again in my MacBook Pro, I decided to re-do my dual booting. My goal is to triple boot, with OSX 10.6.8 (installed), Windows 7 Home Premium and a flavour of Linux (undecided at this point). I know that I should not do a hard link of my entire home folder between the...

Any ideas? :(
@Luke Well, did you try symbolic links?
17:38
Yup, but it keeps the data on my Mac partition. If I try the other way, I get a Folder exists error. Even as root, I can't delete the folder inside my Home Folder to re-create it
@Luke Have you tried turning it off and back on again? ;)
The laptop?
BRB, son waking up... Two seconds
@Luke Ah. But this might be a different issue then.
I think symbolic links would work fine under Linux. So that would be an answer to that question.
Your issue on Mac is about replacing the default folders. The issue is different because it is related to permissions.
At least that's what I'm understanding.
But I want the data stored on a separate partition, as I'm wanting triple boot with write access to all... So I made a FAT32 partition for data
Yeah, I got that.
17:41
OK
I think... :D
Let me try something ;)
Alright, thanks
Okay, I think I haven't understood a few things. Why can't you use mount? You said because it's a FAT32 partition. Can't you mount FAT32 partitions on OSX by default?
Even if it has no UUID, you should be able to mount it through /dev/sdxN
@OliverSalzburg Right, it is FAT32.... But it automatically mounts just as the volume name (/Volumes/DATA). Inside of that are the 5 folders I want to link, and keep the after DATA for the files on the separate partition.
Wait, are you telling me I can mount a FOLDER from FAT32 onto a folder for my OSX?
I feel like I'm asking the duck the question, lol
@Luke So, you tried to ln -s /Volumes/DATA/Music ~/Music?
17:48
And I get Folder exists for the error
@WilliamHilsum so how much do Paypal charge for currency conversion?
So you tried to sudo rm -rf ~/Music and it told you Permission denied?
And I can't even sudo rmdir /Users/luke/Music
17:49
It's a system folder that OSX requires to run
That's what I thought. So I think this could require a completely new question.
Alright, could you help me with wording it properly? I was under the impression I did already

Q: Move 'Pictures', 'Documents', 'Movies' etc folders

ArtI would like to move folders like 'Pictures', 'Documents', 'Movies' to a different from default under the root of user's home location, preferably into a sub-folder under the same user's home folder. For example, user/Music would bo to user/stuff/Music I'd rather not create symbolic likns to mo...

Check this out
@OliverSalzburg Checked out, as well as the other linked question, but that still keeps the original files on the Mac volume
You also tried this?

A: Move 'Pictures', 'Documents', 'Movies' etc folders

WrightsCSI personally use symlinks to move all of those directories under my User account. I logged in as root and symlinked all of my directories "Documents' Downloads " Movies", etc and moved them to an external drive. Mac OS sees the changes just fine and points to those directories (on the external ...

This sounded like he actually completely replaced the folders with symlinks to other locations.
18:02
I obviously misread that... I gotta run, but I'll check it out in closer detail when little guy goes for his next nap. Thanks Oliver
I think the key is the "enabling the root user" part. As that seems to have enabled him to use symlinks.
Please let me know if you solve it ;)
19:01
anybody here?
from the USA?
People are here, but I think you're at Europe prime time atm
@EinsteinsGrandson Do you specifically need someone from the USA?
19:24
Can I see the log this chat room which is 20 days old?
or 100 days old?
Is it saved somewhere?
The history of this chat room of the last 6 months or so?
19:56
@OliverSalzburg yo!
20:09
@Boris_yo Hey!
20:26
@OliverSalzburg How is it going?
@Boris_yo Well
21:03
@OliverSalzburg I have option of trimming the picture in my 2006 y.o. compact camera but after trimming, picture turns from 6 MP to 3 MP. Is it normal? Is trimming same as cropping?
to trim = take away
so, yeah
I are back... @OliverSalzburg Going to try that solution now, will come back if I don't get locked out of my user profile :P
@OliverSalzburg to crop = ?
@Boris_yo To my understanding, to crop and to trim are two very similar words.
@OliverSalzburg No go :( Tried with my Movies folder (since it's empty)
I'm going to edit my question to show what I did and the results
21:18
@Luke Did you "enable the root account"?
Yup
Did it as root too
Humm, well then
@OliverSalzburg Okay, then trimming and cropping will impact on image quality when viewing on HDTV? Or only impact on image size?
@OliverSalzburg Updated, in case you got any more script-fu available
@Boris_yo You just lose data. Part of the already captured image is removed before it is saved.
21:40
@OliverSalzburg Got it! At least for one folder... Gonna try for the other four. If it works, I'll post it as an answer
@Luke Sweet :D
@OliverSalzburg Only downside is no customer icon :P
*custom
It works :) For all the folders, and even the stacks work!
22:17
ugh
is wishing he had his new comp. Apparently the desktop is struggling on VMs
22:54
@Luke Great!
@Luke Have you decided on a Linux distribution yet?
23:35
@JourneymanGeek New computer coming?
@sidran32: barring unforceen circumstances, i should have enough for my mobo/ram/processor in end september
Nice!
I'd have it by now if i didn't have a ton of expenses in june and july ;p
Probably going to document the build process proper for SU blog ;p
Totally understand that. I felt the effects of my car purchase last October for months to come. My bank account is only just starting to rebound to a place that's comfortable, like before the purchase.
@JourneymanGeek Oh, that's cool! Been trying to think about what'd be good for a blog. I don't have anything that I can think of though.
lol. In my case still saving. I ended up getting a book i needed (BAM, 1/3 my allowance), DIII (close to a third as well), and putting money into paypal (which i need to top up for hosting off birthday cash)
@sidran32: wrote one on keyboards thats coming out at some point, this would be my second.
23:40
The only thing that I can come up with is if I ever decide to go through with converting my computer from air to water-cooled, but I'm not even in a position to consider starting that project, yet.
@JourneymanGeek Nice.
I'd love to write one on forensic tools for everyday data recovery, but i have no idea where to start ;p
Yanno, cover testdisk and photorec, forensic DD varients...
Oh. Also, there's an election going on ;p
@Mokubai Thanks, the thing is.. I have bought so many, I would rather get the augmented edition, so, waiting for it to naturally price drop and I will pick it up next 75% off... probably should have done that with a few more games!... Or wait for a GOTY edition with all DLC included.
Aha. Hm. I could offer my experience when I accidentally reformatted my parents' XP machine to an ext3 file system. :P
@JourneymanGeek Ya, that. :)
lol
I got my first experience with testdisk formatting the drive i had.. everything on ;p
and this was pre geek getting usable skills
@JourneymanGeek That was my first foray into data recovery. But luckily, I had already read up enough on what the right thing to do is, that I got everything back. It just cost me a couple hundred dollars at the end. :P
23:44
back when i hunted down rootkits in dos ;p
Hehe
ProTip: Double check the TXT/XML file Speccy produces... Apparently, there's a bug where it won't output the Windows product key sometimes. It's worked for me in the past, so I didn't think to double check. I lost a product key. :(
lol
no sticker?
@JourneymanGeek Yeah.
23:45
@Sathya Hmm... It should of been $6.24 + $5 = 11.23, and I rounded up to 11.50 :/ If you did pay less, feel free to keep it...
It's okay, I'll just put Windows XP on it. It's an old PC. I have a dozen unused keys that I got while studying computer science.
lol
my school only gives me a copy of a product a year :/
hopes they get windows 8 release before i graduate.
Yeah. Stupid Speccy bug. I just tested Speccy saving a TXT file on another PC and the Windows key was included. Oh well
@Mokubai depends on currency... I just sent $11.50 and got charged 12c, so, not a lot... I guess 1% rounded up - not sure how accurate their currency rate is either, but, I am happy overall... (FYI, today was - 1 GBP = 1.51302USD )
@Oliversalzburg Not yet. Open to suggestions
23:47
Meh. I'd just throw Linux on it. It'd be at least relatively useful and more up to date than XP is these days.
@JourneymanGeek well windows 8 upgrade will only be like $40, fairly cheap as windows goes.
@JourneymanGeek It was a hand-me-down PC from a relative who no longer needed it. Not a big deal, it'll probably get turned in to a Linux server someday. :P
@SimonSheehan: if my school has it, its free ;p
@sidran32 Yeah.
@JourneymanGeek even better haha
23:48
@sidran32: currently plotting to get rid of my last XP install ;p
@JourneymanGeek I'd just ditch them. Even if I had some unused keys (and I might, dunno, don't care at this point).
@sidran32: Its the shared system ;p
I do have Windows Vista keys... lol
@JourneymanGeek Oh, I thought you meant unused keys :P
and i need a reinstall since the system needs a daily reboot else games don't run right, and takes about 10 minutes after the reboot to be usable ;p
23:49
@iglvzx I have an unused key for Windows CE. I got it free on a whim that I may play with it, but I never did anything with it. :P
I can't work out why, tracked it down to deleted startup entries the last time
(actually its not my last XP box. My dad's undead r51 also runs XP)
the hard drive will fail any moment now
@JourneymanGeek I'm still amused that my parents' Pentium 4 machine from around 2003 actually still runs. :P
Go Dell, go! :P
@sidran32 Fun. I made an effort to acquire as much software from Microsoft/MSDN/Dreamspark while I was an eligible student. I have a bunch of unused keys for lots of MS software. :P
P4 at 2.0 GHz (IIRC), maxed out RAM at 1 GB. Doesn't even have SATA. Uses IDE interface for drives. :P
That's the one that I accidentally reformatted to ext3 at one time, actually.
@iglvzx Pretty much :P
If it fails, i may swap it with one of these dealextreme.com/p/…
@sidran32: I don't knock dell desktops. On one now ;p
(OTOH, i build my own boxen. Juno is a anomaly, and i'm running it in a nice case with too many fans for her ;p
23:54
@JourneymanGeek Same here. Their laptops I trust less. But they make good desktops. Just if you're an enthusiast with intent on lots of heavy upgrading, it may be a bit less than you'd like.
But for my family, I tend to recommend Dell for their desktops.
@sidran32: their cases, least in the case of the 530, are horribly cramped.
But if you wanted an off the shelf desktop, they arn't bad
@JourneymanGeek I dont' know about that one. All I know is my XPS 410 had a tremendous case. I had to crack the thing open for a few upgrades and it was a dream to work with. Also, airflow was fantastic. :)
lol. The dell 530 was horrid
I'll take your word for it. :P
(though i found other companies, even lian li (sp?) use the sideways mounted drive method)
...
23:57
You mean with the drive mounted vertically?
not a stock cooler
ya. on punched out bits of sheetmetal
Massive fan. :D
NOT stock ;p
And ya, I don't mind that though. I just consider it like an old-school desktop design, put on its side. :P
and thats a 531, the AMD version
same crappy case tho ;p
23:59
I don't mind that kind of desktop design, either. It was good because it gave you a free monitor stand. And saved desktop space.
Aha
oh, its a mini tower
that was DEFINATELY a cost saving feature
