For those of you that think being on Super User and Stack Overflow is a waste of time, I received this from a friend from Microsoft:
> Glad to see you’re getting your hands dirty with code on Super User. This is a great way to learn and I know a lot of companies use these posts as a recruiting tool.
@iglvzx it really depends on who you're talking to, but if they are programmers at all, they've heard of Stack Overflow. and if you get an invitation to SO.Careers, there's a lot of job openings there to apply for.
@nhinkle Any chance you can quickly buy and gift these: store.steampowered.com/app/105450 and (the collection) store.steampowered.com/app/57900 from here? ... $10 + $10 and I'll transfer $20 to you via paypal? ... Sorry, can't remember if I have done this before with you :/
If you haven't signed up to AWS before then you can get a microinstance for free for a year
Otherwise, you pay for storage, cpu and i/o. Cpu and i/o only happen when it is running, so practically zero for my purposes, and storage for the VM costs me about $3 per month
I like the sound of free! TBH, I only save between £50p-£1, sometimes £2/£3, but, I have been buying so much, it mounts up to £100+... (I keep a record of what I have bought)... and, in return, I am happy to help others who help me! (www.steamprices.com) shows region! If it is like 10p difference, unless I am getting other stuff, I just buy myself... but, there are some things where Steam has 20USD/20Euro/20GBP... so, it just makes sense to get an American to buy!
@Paul well, if I can ever help you without the hassle of a VM, I am more than happy to pay and gift it to you
@JourneymanGeek that's frustrating. Overall I've heard OK things about their support, and I know the hardware is far better than most of the brands, in terms of reliability.
I guess the gamble is, if something does go wrong, it might be a pain, but it's less likely to go wrong.
@WilliamHilsum basically they refused to be helpful, and said they could only do a like-for-like replacement, and because they don't carry my model anymore, the closest they could do was a big heavy piece of crap that I didn't like.
@nhinkle I would escalate it :/ Have you accepted now? I would try to say that you bought it solely because of xx, so, it isn't like for like in your case
@WilliamHilsum i was already escalated all the way to the highest level they claim exists
and went 'round the block several times
i laid out very specific requirements and they basically said "sorry, we can't do that, this is our 'closest replacement' available"
the consensus seems to be that once you get to the case manager level, there is no more level to go to
now earlier in the process they did give me a phone number to call if i had a complaint, and i fully intend to call that once i have the replacement physically in my hands (so they can't screw many over any further) and demand a refund
@nhinkle Bah, if you have it now, it is NEVER too late, try sending an email here - meg.whitman / megwhitman / m.whitman / mwhitman @hp.com (and do the same with other names from here www8.hp.com/us/en/company-information/executive-team/team.html ) you will probably never get a response from them, just secretary/PA/similar, but, you should get a response!
I would say that you urgently needed a laptop so were forced to accept, but, you are in no way happy
it's more like "haven't had a laptop in nearly 2 months due to HP's repeated fuck-ups and am very unhappy and planning to inform every customer I ever have to never purchase an HP product again"
i doubt it'll do much good, but i'll try
they still haven't shipped the replacement yet
i'm hoping to sell the replacement on ebay and use the money to buy a thinkpad :P
@nhinkle A friend had a problem with his X-Box red ringing 3 days outside of warranty.. They wouldn't help! I emailed Steve Ballmer, Got a replacement within a few days and a personal call from one of the head of X-Box EMEA!
If you are fed up with a company, always email the CEO! :)
I'm also considering contacting the BBB and/or going to small claims court if I can come up with enough documentation of monetary damages. But I'm holding off on those two options until I see what happens.
If they get paid over $1,000,000 a year, that is roughly $4,000 a day... Their time is more valuable to the company than just saying yes to a few requests that come in...
> Somebody goes absolutely nuts after you delete their offensive post and suspend them. I'm talking death threats and every bad word in the book. What do you do?
Heh. I was thinking about asking about that. "You're having an absolutely shitty day, and see a crappy post in the flag queue. Do you burninante it on site, or step back and let someone else handle it?"
Hey guys, anyone know if there's a Inno3d 570 GTX that comes with a water block pre-mounted? Trying to buy a 570gtx from a guy, but he says that it has no air cooling..
Thats why I dont bother at all ;) . Well thats a lie. Documents get Google Drive'd and everything else can burn along with my house if it comes to it.
I like this quote though ""OMG, three drives is so expensive! That sounds like a hassle!" Shut up. I know things. You will listen to me. Do it anyway."
@VBwhatnow - I backup my stuff to Wuala. It's perfect. But we are talking about 320gb of data now that I have to backup. And a DSL uplink. Imagine uploading that!
Hah. @IvoFlipse "Picture is just an illustration" I guess. :D
@VBwhatnow - Now that's my problem. And HDD prices are still high. I've got a 500gb drive, which is the current destination. Well, let's hope (pray for religious) they won't fail.
Otherwise, I can imagine the owner of that data literally go insane.
@OliverSalzburg Yet another user who can't be bothered reading the suggested questions list...
We have a financial software that doesn't work with IE9. It also doesn't help to use Developer Tools as the program doesn't recognize any compatible browser and refuses to work. — Alex Maximov11 mins ago
...gah. Programmers who hard code specific version numbers without considering future versions... Unless there's actually a reason it doesn't work on a newer version, there's no excuse for using a == instead of a >=...
I am seeking advice on which memory to use with my motherboard and CPU. Below are my components and some relevant information extracted from their official websites.
NOTE: Although this is a very specific case, a general answer is equally good for me — and also alot more useful for everyone els...
having a problem... new pc - fresh copy of windows 7 pro / 2003 AD - rename the pc, reboot, join the domain, reboot, login as the domain user (regular everyday user) - open outlook 2007 - configure it to exchange 2003 - works fine as it always does - config finishes, outlook opens - crashes before it can ask for the users name and initials. reboot, try again; same thing. safe mode - same thing. error log says Faulting Outlook.exe - no specific error, just a bunch of time stamps and crap
tried multiple pc's (thought it was a pc issue) - same thing - this process has gone fine with over 100 users. no issues with anyone else
2nd time i'm trying to migrate this user - tried a few months ago - same issue, wasted to much time and moved on to the next person on the list. @ end of the list, need to get this one done. User is working fine on her existing windows xp machine
It fails if you select the default settings (HAHAHAHAHAHAH LOL MICROSOFT), and it fails if you got reparse points. Bonus points for MS: You *WILL* have reparse points if you use a non-English Windows.
SO BASICALLY IT WILL FAIL. What are your options? Buy a backup software. Because this is one is FUBAR. Or, try adjusting the VSS size limit, resize the boot partition (boot), try removing all the reparse points (e.g.: kill your libraries)....
This is so WRONG. WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS. I COULD LITERALLY BREAK BALLMER'S HUGE TABLET ON HIS HEAD.
