There we go, enough reviewed for the moment.
21:17
@RebeccaChernoff ahhh the suspense! :O
pfft, shouldn't really be suspenseful...you're a smart cookie (;
Well I can think of exactly one thing that would make me really happy that you would plausibly be working on, but then you told Sathya "it isn't what you think," so now it's suspenseful. Either way I look forward to being happy whenever it's done.
what's the one thing?

Q: Using the Stack engine for the blog – a long-term idea for maintaining a healthy blogging culture

slhckWhat's the current status? Let's say this first: The Super User blog is a great idea, and we've had enormous success with it. We've had a lot of diverse contributions, inspired by our Question of the Week posts on Meta, and several regular writers. Even more so, Stack Exchange has launched a num...

perhaps "it isn't what you think" wasn't the right description. maybe.. "partial compromise", heh.
21:20
Well I guess I'll have to wait and see
I'd love if that ever happened, but eh... it's a big one
Got to love partial blogging...
Or it could be a community FAQ/canonical answers sort of thing. I've been hoping for built-in support for something like community FAQ's for a while now.
There's really all sorts of things that could make me happy
Like... You write the blog posts on Super User, but they still show up at the old address; although I would rather have the other way around.
21:22
I've done more php in the last few days than anyone sanely should be. (;
3
Oh noez... there's the compromise
That doesn't sound Microsoft Stack to me, so this feels more like adjustments to WordPress...
OR, because Jeff left, they're porting the whole Stack Exchange architecture to PHP and open sourcing it. BAHAHAHAHA

That doesn't sound Microsoft Stack to me, so this feels more like adjustments to WordPress...
@nhinkle zomg how did you know?!
21:24
@RebeccaChernoff I just had a hunch, ya know?
@nhinkle I don't see why the current one can't be open-sourced, unless Jeff still has rights over the license... Not that it will happen, though.
Would be "oh noez" all over the place, thousands of clones all over the web... :D
@TomWijsman that was tongue in cheek. Jeff actually was more in favor of open-sourcing than Joel was, if I recall my Stack Exchange history correctly.
Oh, don't know Jeff that well then. Or well, no particular thoughts to that, actually.
rest assured, I am not porting the SE engine to php.
haha, i'm sure
21:29
But well, it's less about open-sourcing and more about the impact to quality / activity...
erm, but yeah...just working on fixing one of the pain points.
Ahhhh! I'm writing PHP. Hold me. ):
my feelings about php have not changed since then (;
how did you find that lol
codinghorror.com/blog/2012/06/the-php-singularity.html It appears that your feelings about PHP aren't alone... @RebeccaChernoff
21:38
@RebeccaChernoff: Well, I supposed you would ask help for what you are doing so I though I would look for that help to get another hint at what you're doing... :(
right thinking, wrong place, haha
Is it also possible that you're on IRC? :D
I am on IRC, but have not mentioned any of this there. (:
@RebeccaChernoff: mIRC v7.22
that tickles >_<
21:40
I see you're on the same network as me, on the #node.js channel.
If not, someone's stealing your handle... :P
/me stopped searching, no worries.
nah, that was me, I saw the ctcp request (;
meteor.com is built on Node.js, it's nice, you should check it out if you want to go for the web part of Node.js.
I don't actually know node.js...been fiddling with it. done a few of the nodetuts
was itching to play with something new (:
I feel that it's more like learning JavaScript and then looking around their API, I didn't feel that it required much learning apart from that you have to prefer asynchronous over synchronous.
sure, different conventions, different frameworks/libs to get used to...but it's not like a complete new syntax
21:46
I prefer it when I need to write a small script or something, know JS well, it's blazing fast V8, it doesn't provide less than other things (Apart from graphics, but that's what a browser is for).
fun to play with
It's what I would want Python to be, I've regularly ran into things there that slowed the execution down and would require you to write C code in that place...
And not getting that to work, meh.
@KronoS Same, left PHP when ASP.NET MVC came around.
And man...
19 hours ago, by Tom Wijsman
Wait, what... http://www.php.net/manual/en/book.v8js.php
> PHP is the Nickelback of programming languages
I love that quote.
21:55
@slhck I don't understand why people hate them so much... I'm not the biggest fan, but still....
@KronoS The analogy is apt though. It's not that they're hated, but everyone says they suck and still everyone listens to them :P
Oh my...
@slhck Ahhhh... that makes more sense...

Q: Can one write a good mathematical textbook without proofs?

Makoto KatoI think it's possible. The idea is: divide and conquer(see below). EDIT Since some of you seem to think the question is too broad, I change my question as follows. Can one write a good mathematical textbook on algebraic geometry without proofs? The level and the coverage are almost the same as t...

I am proud to say I never have listened to nickleback.
21:57
See the revision history.
@TomWijsman This is precisely why I dislike EDIT marks all over the place.
@daniel I added EDITs to make my question clearer. — Makoto Kato Jun 30 at 2:24
No you didn't :P
/mnt/windows/Music/Nickelback/All the Right Reasons/09 If Everyone Cared.mp3
Hey, I have a couple of Nickelback albums myself. No big deal.
I think it's his most popular / best song or so, got it ages ago.
Haven't listened to my music collection for ages...
@slhck wow
22:10
Hmm, his comment thread is long as well.
Whoa, car alarm for several minutes and still going. It's 0:11 AM here.
@slhck same here...
I used to like a few of their tracks, but can't say I'm much of a fan :P
22:27
Dunno if it is really a car alarm, but still going... o_O
And... It's off.
23:01
ooh. New review system <3
random question: anyone trying win8 with a local account? searching online, I see results saying you can add accounts even with a local account, but I have no "accounts" item in the charms bar. thought someone here might have first-hand experience with it?
A "local" account?
not connecting to a live id
I'm confused, if you're an administrator you can add other accounts, yeah.
Oh wait, the live ID thing, hmm...
23:04
Okay, dunno, don't have Windows 8 anymore because I switched to Gentoo Linux.
mail/calendar/etc just comes up with the "sign in with a microsoft account", clicking cancel closes the app, and the charms bar -> settings doesn't have anything useful.
@RebeccaChernoff: 00:20 dailymotion.com/video/…
Hm. Haven't tried it yet. @RebeccaChernoff maybe ask on SU? /ducks
Control Panel -> User(s) -> + at bottom.
The Metro one.
Question: If I were to upgrade to Windows 8 now, will it lock me out or anything when the full version comes out?
23:06
@TomWijsman I alraedy have a local account
Oh cool, thats a good price too
@SimonSheehan you won't be able to upgrade directly to the full version, at least not officially
Oh, but yeah, for the Metro apps you need a Live account I think.
@nhinkle ahh
23:07
Those that sync up with Windows Live, that is.
You can install over it, with a fresh install.
@TomWijsman that doesn't agree with what I'm finding...that's why I was curious about first-hand experiences (:
It would be nice if instead of being just a Hotmail/Windows Live login, they could let you use any OAuth service. But of course Microsoft would never do that.
@TomWijsman oh! Well gee. OK then!
Unless the title is misleading, which I wouldn't be surprised of these days...
23:09
I'll just do a fresh install from MSDNAA when it comes out
I'm not sure if MSDNAA gets early access like normal MSDN and TechNet or not
Yeah, upgrading is tedious, perhaps it's better worked out now, but still...
@nhinkle Ugh, I don't particularly like that... sort of forcing it onto us in a way to use LIVE... which, I loathe my hotmail account haha, its a mess now and I dont use it for anything
@SimonSheehan don't worry, there'll be Google apps soon I'm sure
@SimonSheehan yeah, I'm totally down with the local account stuff...but it seems pretty damn crippled if I can't use any of the metro apps
@nhinkle Amen for the geniuses at Google. Although perhaps once Windows 8 rolls around I'll move over to Linux... since Optimus support is now much better for my laptop
23:10
the mail app supports adding a google account, so why do I need to connect a live id in order to add my google account? |:
@RebeccaChernoff I'd prefer it... ugh, I really do NOT like that
You could always make a Live account and just... not use it
that's no less ridiculous...
Not a bad idea. However, still, you NEED a live account to use apps...thats really ridiculous and inconvenient
I HOPE the reasonably priced version is available outside the US
While i'm not sold on metro, yet, some other aspects of it are nice
23:11
You can basically ignore metro if you want to
(Or i buy MSDN/Technet once i get a job ;p)
@nhinkle: Precisely
the same way i ignore the desktop now ;p
@nhinkle I'd like to hope that... I sort of think I will either stick to Windows 7 for a long time, or just move to Linux. The Linux part is mostly just because I want to try it.
eheh
Once i get my gaming box/the office closes down, i need to look at getting a dedicated linux box again, thats not a server
the only thing stopping me from moving to Linux is 1. Optimus support is a bit of a pain. 2. I like the power management on Windows that keeps my battery from depreciating.
@SimonSheehan: I don't run linux on laptops, i swear somehow it kills my batteries.
23:14
I just happen to like Windows :P
@JourneymanGeek I hear you! It wasn't friendly before. Plus no GPU power management.
Windows just DOES what I want right now
nothing against linux, it's just not what i'm used to
Including a few games, and photoshop.
also no offense, but i need Office. Google Docs and Libre Office just don't cut it
23:14
@RebeccaChernoff If you haven't found by tomorrow, I'll try it to see what it gives (Developer Preview, though). Need to install sound on that laptop anyway... :)
Perhaps one day I'll build a dual boot desktop... but right now, don't feel like it
@nhinkle: amen
@nhinkle Indeed, Open Office just isnt the same
Once the replacement for my bricked SSD arrives, I'll get Windows 8 RC on my desktop
and if HP ever freakin gets me some sort of fixed thing, I'll get it on there too
The two reasons i'm stuck with windows right now are MS Office (both due to UI and referencing) and VMware player (My school won't support virtualbox, or anything other than windows)
23:16
Now for my beef on the new review page
/me is gonna miss transparency when aero gets killed off
I dont like that the low quality posts only have a "delete" option... I just want to flag it :/
I dunno, just used to the old page I guess haha
ya
I still use late answers a lot
23:18
Considering I've run through over 4k reviews on the old one.
Its the best way to catch spammers and n00bs
@TomWijsman writing up a SU question
Exactly, yep
superuser.com/users/145504/stahlworks this guy is going to get suspended T T
I've warned him TWICE about self promotion in comments
Uh oh
He now IS suspended
@SimonSheehan oops :P
@nhinkle Very quick haha
I'll let flags sit if they aren't urgent, but I try to respond to spam flags quickly.
Oh, something i am amused about. Shouldn't invalid flags, by 'default' be disputed? ;p
23:21
Huh?
@nhinkle: Well, someone thinks its flaggable, someone else disagrees, DISPUTE BY DEFAULT ;p
It'll always end up disputed if somebody flags as disagreed. Not sure what your point is.
exactly
hence its amusing, since that is the logical thing to happen
... I am too easily amused today....
"You have no more close votes today; come back in 34 minutes"
Noooooooo
I'm at 0 votes as well :P
The new system is lovely
Bon Gart will hate it tho

A: New Feature: Community Review Tasks - Now in Beta

Simon SheehanI like this so far. However, while looking at the Low quality posts section, I had issues with it. The only options to choose from are Looks good, Edit, Recommend deletion, and Not sure. What does Recommend Deletion do? Does it make a flag or something? I wouldn't mind having the flagging option...

I wanted to flag things :/
OH ;p
@SimonSheehan: You do realise eventually, you won't be able to flag as much stuff, right? ;p
@JourneymanGeek whys that?
VTC makes flagging to close redundant
Also, if you win the elections, no more flags for you ;p
@JourneymanGeek if he keeps getting his flags approved, then he gets MOAR FLAGS
23:30
But I do need it to flag answers :P
ALL THE FLAGS
@JourneymanGeek haha, thats true too!
@nhinkle: there's less things he can flag. I'm down to flagging answers ;p
You can flag for deletion if you can't vote for deletion yet. And you can always flag spam.
lol
I can do that too
I MAINLY flag spam and NAAs
and NAAs are a bit iffy, since i can close em too
Heck, even after becoming a mod, my flag count still grows (gradually) from spam flags
23:33
I think unilateral spam votes are my favorite mod feature. INSTANT FLAG HAMMER
Handy tools they give the kids to play with ;)
Whenever I get to 10k, you know, in a few years, it will be good :P
@SimonSheehan or if you get a diamond in, you know, a few weeks. You never know.
@nhinkle Whichever one comes first haha.
All depends on how the people vote.
We've got a lot of really good people running too
I was appointlected about 10 hours after hitting 10k
it was quite the whirlwind of new features
Oh yeah, that's right. Must have been exciting too
23:36
Grrrr.... I hate excel right now
Excel always hates me :P
Whassamatter @KronoS?
Although I don't use it much. Online banking keeps track of things really well these days
I use it all the time in school. Sometimes teachers make you use it for things it was really never designed for.
I'm actually taking a course next year called Math and Computers. I think there's a fair bit of excel in there
23:37
@nhinkle do this fun little experiment next time you open excel
populate a few values in cells then use <kbd>ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>end</kbd>
it should go to the last entry...
cool. but that's hardly aggravating...
welp i'm out. see you guys later
I'm in love with the new /review stuff
waits for the magic to happen superuser.com/q/448281/42458 q:
@nhinkle cya later!
sorry got pulled out by my boss...

after that, delete some row, and then inserts some rows and then delete and then insert and do the same ctr+end... it goes to a random cell
if you do this enough times, you get some trippy behavior....
23:48
@RebeccaChernoff: Uhm... Sign up for a Microsoft Account? Or does that ask you to create a hotmail one?
I don't want to >_< stomps foot
@RebeccaChernoff you have too it appears:
@KronoS: Yeah, that's what her screenshot says as well.
I'm very surprised that a Stack Exchange employee would have this sort of question... — DragonLord 1 min ago
|:
@RebeccaChernoff Hmm, well thats a negative attitude :/ Stack Exchange employees dont know everything!
Although they all seem very intellient
Downloading Windows 8 RC now to try it
you know, only like 5 months late to the party
23:54
@KronoS what's the relevance of this link? I already have the local account... (:
@RebeccaChernoff The question now is whether a MS account "activates" the ability to use the applications, without needing to have that MS account around.
MS account != live.com btw, you can have any e-mail as a MS account.
oh, if I used the wrong terms, please edit (:
